Gapped and gapless short range ordered magnetic states with $(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$ wavevectors in the pyrochlore magnet Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+δ}$

Recent low temperature heat capacity (C$_P$) measurements on polycrystalline samples of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+δ}$ have shown a strong sensitivity to the precise Tb concentration $x$, with a large anomaly exhibited for $x \sim 0.005$ at $T_C \sim 0.5$ K and no such anomaly and corresponding phase transition for $x \le 0$. We have grown single crystal samples of Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+δ}$, with approximate composition $x=-0.001, +0.0042$, and $+0.0147$, where the $x=0.0042$ single crystal exhibits a large C$_P$ anomaly at $T_C$=0.45 K, but neither the $x=-0.001$ nor the $x=+0.0147$ single crystals display any such anomaly. We present new time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on the $x=-0.001$ and the $x=+0.0147$ samples which show strong $\left(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}\right)$ quasi-Bragg peaks at low temperatures characteristic of short range antiferromagnetic spin ice (AFSI) order at zero magnetic field but only under field-cooled conditions, as was previously observed in our $x = 0.0042$ single crystal. These results show that the strong $\left(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}\right)$ quasi-Bragg peaks and gapped AFSI state at low temperatures under field cooled conditions are robust features of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, and are not correlated with the presence or absence of the C$_P$ anomaly and phase transition at low temperatures. Further, these results show that the ordered state giving rise to the C$_P$ anomaly is confined to $0 \leq x \leq 0.01$ for Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+δ}$, and is not obviously connected with conventional order of magnetic dipole degrees of freedom.

Long-range order and spin-liquid states of polycrystalline Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$

Low-temperature states of polycrystalline samples of a frustrated pyrochlore oxide Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ have been investigated by specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron scattering experiments. We have found that this system can be tuned by a minute change of $x$ from a spin-liquid state ($x < x_{\text{c}}$) to a partly ordered state with a small antiferromagnetic ordering of the order of $0.1 μ_{\text{B}}$. Specific heat shows a sharp peak at a phase transition at $T_{\text{c}}= 0.5$ K for $x=0.005$. Magnetic excitation spectra for this sample change from a quasielastic to a gapped type through $T_{\text{c}}$. The possibility of a Jahn-Teller transition is discussed.

Vacancy defects and monopole dynamics in oxygen-deficient pyrochlores

The idea of magnetic monopoles in spin ice has enjoyed much success at intermediate temperatures, but at low temperatures a description in terms of monopole dynamics alone is insufficient. Recently, numerical simulations were used to argue that magnetic impurities account for this discrepancy by introducing a magnetic equivalent of residual resistance in the system. Here we propose that oxygen deficiency is the leading cause of magnetic impurities in as-grown samples, and we determine the defect structure and magnetism in Y2Ti2O(7-δ) using diffuse neutron scattering and magnetization measurements. These defects are eliminated by oxygen annealing. The introduction of oxygen vacancies causes Ti4+ to transform to magnetic Ti3+ with quenched orbital magnetism, but the concentration is anomalously low. In the spin-ice material Dy2Ti2O7 we find that the same oxygen-vacancy defects suppress moments on neighbouring rare-earth sites, and that these magnetic distortions dramatically slow down the long-time monopole dynamics at sub-Kelvin temperatures.

Juxtaposition of Spin Freezing and Long Range Order in a Series of Geometrically Frustrated Antiferromagnetic Gadolinium Garnets

Specific heat measurements in zero magnetic field are presented on a homologous series of geometrically frustrated, antiferromagnetic, Heisenberg garnet systems. Measurements of Gd3Ga5O12, grown with isotopically pure Gd, agree well with previous results on samples with naturally abundant Gd, showing no ordering features. In contrast, samples of Gd3Te2Li3O12 and Gd3Al5O12 are found to exhibit clear ordering transitions at 243 mK and 175 mK respectively. The effects of low level disorder are studied through dilution of Gd3+ with non-magnetic Y3+ in Gd3Te2Li3O12. A thorough structural characterization, using X-ray diffraction, is performed on all of the samples studied. We discuss possible explanations for such diverse behavior in very similar systems.

Lightly stuffed pyrochlore structure of single-crystalline Yb2Ti2O7 grown by the optical floating zone technique

Recent neutron scattering and specific heat studies on the pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7 have revealed variations in its magnetic behavior below 265mK. In the best samples, a sharp anomaly in the specific heat is observed at T=265mK. Other samples, especially single crystals, have broad features in the specific heat which vary in sharpness and temperature depending on the sample, indicating that the magnetic ground state may be qualitatively different in such samples. We performed detailed comparisons of the chemical structure of a pulverised single crystal of Yb2Ti2O7, grown by the floating zone technique, to a sintered powder sample of Yb2Ti2O7. Rietveld refinements of neutron powder diffraction data on these samples reveal that the crushed single crystal is best described as a "stuffed" pyrochlore, Yb2(Ti(2-x)Yb(x))O7-(x/2) with x = 0.046(4), despite perfectly stoichiometric starting material. Substituting magnetic Yb3+ on the non-magnetic Ti4+ sublattice would introduce random exchange bonds and local lattice deformations. These are expected to be the mechanism leading to of the variation of the delicate magnetic ground state of Yb2Ti2O7. Determination of the cubic cell length, a, could be useful as a method for characterizing the stoichiometry of non- pulverised single crystals at room temperature.

SCUBA-2: The 10000 pixel bolometer camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope

SCUBA-2 is an innovative 10000 pixel bolometer camera operating at submillimetre wavelengths on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The camera has the capability to carry out wide-field surveys to unprecedented depths, addressing key questions relating to the origins of galaxies, stars and planets. With two imaging arrays working simultaneously in the atmospheric windows at 450 and 850 microns, the vast increase in pixel count means that SCUBA-2 maps the sky 100-150 times faster than the previous SCUBA instrument. In this paper we present an overview of the instrument, discuss the physical characteristics of the superconducting detector arrays, outline the observing modes and data acquisition, and present the early performance figures on the telescope. We also showcase the capabilities of the instrument via some early examples of the science SCUBA-2 has already undertaken. In February 2012, SCUBA-2 began a series of unique legacy surveys for the JCMT community. These surveys will take 2.5 years and the results are already providing complementary data to the shorter wavelength, shallower, larger-area surveys from Herschel. The SCUBA-2 surveys will also provide a wealth of information for further study with new facilities such as ALMA, and future telescopes such as CCAT and SPICA.

Temperature and Magnetic Field Dependence of Spin Ice Correlations in the Pyrochlore Magnet Tb2Ti2O7

We present a parametric study of the diffuse magnetic scattering at (1/2,1/2,1/2) positions in reciprocal space, ascribed to a frozen antiferromagnetic spin ice state in single crystalline Tb2Ti2O7. Our high-resolution neutron scattering measurements show that the elastic (-0.02 meV < E < 0.02 meV) (1/2,1/2,1/2) scattering develops strongly below ~275 mK, and correlates with the opening of a spin gap of ~0.06-0.08 meV over most of the Brillouin zone. The concomitant low-lying magnetic spin excitations are weakly dispersive and appear to soften near the (1/2,1/2,1/2) wave vector at 80 mK. The nature of the transition at 275 mK has many characteristics of spin glass behavior, consistent with ac-susceptibility measurements. The application of a magnetic field of 0.075 T applied along the [1-10] direction destroys the (1/2,1/2,1/2) elastic scattering, revealing the fragility of this short-range ordered ground state. We construct a refined H-T phase diagram for Tb2Ti2O7 and [1-10] fields which incorporates this frozen spin ice regime and the antiferromagnetic long-range order previously known to be induced in relatively large fields. Specific heat measurements on the same crystal reveal a sharp anomaly at Tc~450 mK and no indication of a transition near ~275 mK. We conclude that the higher temperature specific heat peak is not related to the magnetic ordering but is likely a signal of other, nonmagnetic, correlations.

Unconventional Magnetic Ground State in Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

We report low temperature specific heat and muon spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on both polycrystalline and single crystal samples of the pyrochlore magnet Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. This system is believed to possess a spin Hamiltonian supporting a Quantum Spin Ice (QSI) ground state and to display sample variation in its low temperature heat capacity. Our two samples exhibit extremes of this sample variation, yet our $μ$SR measurements indicate a similar disordered low temperature state down to 16 mK in both. We report little temperature dependence to the spin relaxation and no evidence for ferromagnetic order, in contrast to recent reports by Chang \emph{et al.} (Nat. Comm. {\bf 3}, 992 (2012)). Transverse field (TF) $μ$SR measurements show changes in the temperature dependence of the muon Knight shift which coincide with heat capacity anomalies. We are therefore led to propose that Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ enters a hidden order ground state below $T_c\sim265$ mK where the nature of the ordered state is unknown but distinct from simple long range order.

Dimensional Evolution of Spin Correlations in the Magnetic Pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7

The pyrochlore material Yb2Ti2O7 displays unexpected quasi-two-dimensional (2D) magnetic correlations within a cubic lattice environment at low temperatures, before entering an exotic disordered ground state below T=265mK. We report neutron scattering measurements of the thermal evolution of the 2D spin correlations in space and time. Short range three dimensional (3D) spin correlations develop below 400 mK, accompanied by a suppression in the quasi-elastic (QE) scattering below ~ 0.2 meV. These show a slowly fluctuating ground state with spins correlated over short distances within a kagome-triangular-kagome (KTK) stack along [111], which evolves to isolated kagome spin-stars at higher temperatures. Furthermore, low-temperature specific heat results indicate a sample dependence to the putative transition temperature that is bounded by 265mK, which we discuss in the context of recent mean field theoretical analysis.

Experimental Phase Diagram and Dynamics of a Dilute Dipolar-Coupled Ising System

We present ac susceptibility and specific heat measurements taken on samples of LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$ in the dilute limit: x = 0.018, 0.045, 0.080 and 0.12. Susceptibility measurements show glassy behavior including wide absorption spectra that continually broaden with decreasing temperature. Dynamical scaling analyses show evidence of finite-temperature spin-glass transitions, the temperatures of which match those of recent theoretical work. A surprisingly long intrinsic time constant is observed in these samples and is found to be inversely correlated with the concentration of magnetic moments, x. Our results support the picture that this behavior is largely a single-ion effect, related to the random transverse fields generated by the off-diagonal component of the dipolar interaction and significantly slowed by the important nuclear hyperfine interaction. Specific heat measurements show broad features due to the electronic spins on top of a large Schottky-like nuclear contribution. Unusually, the peak position of the electronic component is found to be largely concentration independent, unlike the glass transition temperature.

Dynamics of the Magnetic Susceptibility Deep in the Coulomb Phase of the Dipolar Spin Ice Material Ho2Ti2O7

Low temperature measurements of the ac magnetic susceptibility along the [110] direction of a single crystal of the dipolar spin ice material Ho2Ti2O7, in zero static field, are presented. While behavior that is qualitatively consistent with previous work on Ho2Ti2O7 and the related material Dy2Ti2O7 is observed, this work extends measurements to appreciably lower temperatures and frequencies. In the freezing regime, below 1 K, the dynamics are found to be temperature activated, thus well described by an Arrhenius law with an activation energy close to 6J_eff, a result that is not easily explained with the current model of magnetic monopole excitations in dipolar spin ice. The form and temperature dependence of the ac susceptibility spectra are found to be nontrivial and distinct from standard glassy relaxation. Particular attention has been paid to correcting for the demagnetization effect, which is quite significant in these materials and has important, even qualitative, effects on the susceptibility spectra.

Time Resolved Control of Electron Tunnelling Times and Single-shot Spin Readout in a Quantum Dot

We are pursuing a capability to perform time resolved manipulations of single spins in quantum dot circuits involving more than two quantum dots. In this paper, we demonstrate full counting statistics as well as averaging techniques we use to calibrate the tunnel barriers. We make use of this to implement the Delft protocol for single shot single spin readout in a device designed to form a triple quantum dot potential. We are able to tune the tunnelling times over around three orders of magnitude. We obtain a spin relaxation time of 300 microseconds at 10T.

Observation of Spin Glass Dynamics in Dilute LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$

AC susceptibility measurements are presented on the dilute, dipolar coupled, Ising magnet LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$ for a concentration $x = 0.045$. The frequency and temperature dependences of the susceptibility show characteristic glassy relaxation. The absorption spectrum is found to broaden with decreasing temperature suggesting that the material is behaving as a spin glass and not as an exotic spin liquid as was previously observed. A dynamical scaling analysis suggests a spin glass transition temperature of 42.6 mK $\pm 2$ mK with an exponent $zν= 7.8 \pm 0.23$.

Suppression of Superconductivity in UPt_3 Single Crystals

High quality single crystals of UPt_3 have been prepared by vertical float-zone refining in ultra-high vacuum. We find that the superconducting transition temperature can be varied systematically by annealing, revealing that the transition temperature intrinsic to UPt_3 is 563 +/- 5 mK. The suppression of the superconducting transition from defects is consistent with a modified Abrikosov-Gor'kov formula that includes anisotropic pairing, Fermi surface anisotropy, and anisotropic scattering by defects.
