Spin dynamics in the skyrmion-host lacunar spinel GaV4S8

In the lacunar spinel GaV4S8, the interplay of spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom produces a rich phase diagram that includes an unusual Neel-type skyrmion phase composed of molecular spins. To provide insight into the interactions underlying this complex phase diagram, we study the spin excitations in GaV4S8 through inelastic neutron scattering measurements on polycrystalline and single-crystal samples. Using linear spin-wave theory, we describe the spin-wave excitations using a model where V4 clusters decorate an FCC lattice. The effective cluster model includes a ferromagnetic interaction and a weaker antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction between the neighboring molecular spins. Our work clarifies the spin interactions in GaV4S8 and supports the picture of interacting molecular clusters.

From one- to two-magnon excitations in the S=3/2 magnet $β$-CaCr$_2$O$_4$

We apply neutron spectroscopy to measure the magnetic dynamics in the S=3/2 magnet $β$-CaCr$_2$O$_4$ (T$_N$=21 K). The low-energy fluctuations, in the ordered state, resemble large-S linear spin-waves from the incommensurate ground state. However, at higher energy transfers, these semi-classical and harmonic dynamics are replaced by an energy and momentum broadened continuum of excitations. Applying kinematic constraints required for energy and momentum conservation, sum rules of neutron scattering, and comparison against exact diagonalization calculations, we show that the dynamics at high-energy transfers resemble low-S one-dimensional quantum fluctuations. $β$-CaCr$_2$O$_4$ represents an example of a magnet at the border between classical Néel and quantum phases, displaying dual characteristics.

Kitaev interactions in the Co honeycomb antiferromagnets Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

Co$^{2+}$ ions in an octahedral crystal field, stabilise a j$_{eff}$ = 1/2 ground state with an orbital degree of freedom and have been recently put forward for realising Kitaev interactions, a prediction we have tested by investigating spin dynamics in two cobalt honeycomb lattice compounds, Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ and Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$, using inelastic neutron scattering. We used linear spin wave theory to show that the magnetic spectra can be reproduced with a spin Hamiltonian including a dominant Kitaev nearest-neighbour interaction, weaker Heisenberg interactions up to the third neighbour and bond-dependent off-diagonal exchange interactions. Beyond the Kitaev interaction that alone would induce a quantum spin liquid state, the presence of these additional couplings is responsible for the zigzag-type long-range magnetic ordering observed at low temperature in both compounds. These results provide evidence for the realization of Kitaev-type coupling in cobalt-based materials, despite hosting a weaker spin-orbit coupling than their 4d and 5d counterparts.

Evidence for a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid in PbCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$

The quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a highly entangled magnetic state characterized by the absence of static magnetism in its ground state. Instead, the spins fluctuate in a highly correlated way down to the lowest temperatures. The QSL is very rare and is confined to a few specific cases where the interactions between the magnetic ions cannot be simultaneously satisfied (known as frustration). Lattices with magnetic ions in triangular or tetrahedral arrangements which interact via isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions can generate such a frustration. Three-dimensional isotropic spin liquids have mostly been sought in materials where the magnetic ions form pyrochlore or hyperkagome lattices. Here we present a three-dimensional lattice called the hyper-hyperkagome that enables spin liquid behaviour and manifests in the compound PbCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$. Using a combination of experiment and theory we show that this system exhibits signs of being a quantum spin liquid with no detectable static magnetism together with the presence of diffuse continua in the magnetic spectrum suggestive of fractional spinon excitations.

Low energy magnons in the chiral ferrimagnet $\text{Cu}_2\text{OSeO}_3$: a coarse-grained approach

We report a comprehensive neutron scattering study of low energy magnetic excitations in the breathing pyrochlore helimagnetic $\text{Cu}_2\text{OSeO}_3$. Fully documenting the four lowest energy magnetic modes that leave the ferrimagnetic configuration of the "strong tetrahedra" intact ($|\hbarω|<13$ meV), we find gapless quadratic dispersion at the $Γ$ point for energies above 0.2 meV, two doublets separated by 1.6(2) meV at the $R$ point, and a bounded continuum at the $X$ point. Our constrained rigid spin cluster model relates these features to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions and the incommensurate helical ground state. Combining conventional spin wave theory with a spin cluster form-factor accurately reproduces the measured equal time structure factor through multiple Brillouin zones. An effective spin Hamiltonian describing the complex anisotropic inter-cluster interactions is obtained.

Ungapped magnetic excitations beyond Hidden Order in URu$_{2-x}$Re$_x$Si$_2$

We use inelastic neutron scattering measurements to show that the energy gap in the magnetic excitations of URu$_2$Si$_2$, induced by the Hidden Order transition, is closed by Re substitution. The magnetic excitations remain ungapped in compositions where the specific heat anomaly associated with Hidden Order is no longer observed, which means that the entropy associated with Hidden Order is tied mostly to the magnetic gapping. Further, the onset of ferromagnetic order does not gap the excitations, reflecting the fact that Re substitution does not dramatically affect the Kondo lattice hybridization.

Antiferromagnetic and Orbital Ordering on a Diamond Lattice Near Quantum Criticality

We present neutron scattering measurements on powder samples of the spinel FeSc2S4 that reveal a previously unobserved magnetic ordering transition occurring at 11.8(2)~K. Magnetic ordering occurs subsequent to a subtle cubic-to-tetragonal structural transition which distorts Fe coordinating sulfur tetrahedra lifting the orbital degeneracy. The application of 1~GPa hydrostatic pressure appears to destabilize this Néel state, reducing the transition temperature to 8.6(8)~K and redistributing magnetic spectral weight to higher energies. The relative magnitudes of ordered $\langle m \rangle^2\!=\!3.1(2)$ and fluctuating moments $\langle δm \rangle^2\!=\!13(1)$ show that the magnetically ordered ground state of FeSc2S4 is drastically renormalized and in proximity to criticality.

Disorder from order among anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor Ising spin chains in SrHo$_2$O$_4$

We describe why Ising spin chains with competing interactions in $\rm SrHo_2O_4$ segregate into ordered and disordered ensembles at low temperatures ($T$). Using elastic neutron scattering, magnetization, and specific heat measurements, the two distinct spin chains are inferred to have Néel ($\uparrow\downarrow\uparrow\downarrow$) and double-Néel ($\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow$) ground states respectively. Below $T_\mathrm{N}=0.68(2)$~K, the Néel chains develop three dimensional (3D) long range order (LRO), which arrests further thermal equilibration of the double-Néel chains so they remain in a disordered incommensurate state for $T$ below $T_\mathrm{S}= 0.52(2)$~K. $\rm SrHo_2O_4$ distills an important feature of incommensurate low dimensional magnetism: kinetically trapped topological defects in a quasi$-d-$dimensional spin system can preclude order in $d+1$ dimensions.

Single to multi quasiparticle excitations in the itinerant helical magnet CeRhIn$_{5}$

CeRhIn$_{5}$ is an itinerant magnet where the Ce$^{3+}$ spins order in a simple helical phase. We investigate the spin excitations and observe sharp spin-waves parameterized by a nearest neighbor exchange $J_{RKKY}$=0.88 $\pm$ 0.05 meV. At higher energies, the spin fluctuations are heavily damped where single quasiparticle excitations are replaced by a momentum and energy broadened continuum constrained by kinematics of energy and momentum conservation. The delicate energy balance between localized and itinerant characters results in the breakdown of the single quasiparticle picture in CeRhIn$_{5}$.

Excitations in the quantum paramagnetic phase of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising magnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in a transverse field: Geometric frustration and quantum renormalization effects

The quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Ising ferromagnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ has recently been driven via applied transverse magnetic fields through a continuous quantum phase transition from spontaneous magnetic order to a quantum paramagnet, and dramatic changes were observed in the spin dynamics, characteristic of weakly perturbed 1D Ising quantum criticality. We report here extensive single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitations throughout the three-dimensional (3D) Brillouin zone in the quantum paramagnetic phase just above the critical field to characterize the effects of the finite interchain couplings. In this phase, we observe that excitations have a sharp, resolution-limited line shape at low energies and over most of the dispersion bandwidth, as expected for spin-flip quasiparticles. We map the full bandwidth along the strongly dispersive chain direction and resolve clear modulations of the dispersions in the plane normal to the chains, characteristic of frustrated interchain couplings in an antiferromagnetic isosceles triangular lattice. The dispersions can be well parametrized using a linear spin-wave model that includes interchain couplings and further neighbor exchanges. The observed dispersion bandwidth along the chain direction is smaller than that predicted by a linear spin-wave model using exchange values determined at zero field, and this effect is attributed to quantum renormalization of the dispersion beyond the spin-wave approximation in fields slightly above the critical field, where quantum fluctuations are still significant.

Low-energy phonons and superconductivity in Sn$_{0.8}$In$_{0.2}$Te

We present neutron scattering measurements on low-energy phonons from a superconducting ($T_{c} = 2.7$~K) Sn$_{0.8}$In$_{0.2}$Te single crystal sample. The longitudinal acoustic phonon mode and one transverse acoustic branch have been mapped out around the (002) Bragg peak for temperatures of 1.7 K and 4.2 K. We observe a substantial energy width of the transverse phonons at energies comparable to twice the superconducting gap; however, there is no change in this width between the superconducting and normal states. We also confirm that the compound is well ordered, with no indications of structural instability.

Magnetic ordering induced by interladder coupling in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg two-leg ladder antiferromagnet C$_9$H$_{18}$N$_2$CuBr$_4$

We present specific-heat and neutron-scattering results for the \emph{S}=1/2 quantum antiferromagnet (dimethylammonium)(3,5-dimethylpyridinium)CuBr$_4$. The material orders magnetically at \emph{T}$_N$=1.99(2)\,K, and magnetic excitations are accompanied by an energy gap of 0.30(2) meV due to spin anisotropy. The system is best described as coupled two-leg spin-1/2 ladders with the leg exchange $J_{\rm leg}$=0.60(2)~meV, rung exchange $J_{\rm rung}$=0.64(9)~meV, interladder exchange $J_{\rm int}$=0.19(2)~meV, and an interaction-anisotropy parameter $λ$=0.93(2), according to inelastic neutron-scattering measurements. In contrast to most spin ladders reported to date, the material is a rare example in which the interladder coupling is very near the critical value required to drive the system to a Néel-ordered phase without an assistance of a magnetic field.

Quantum Critical Fluctuations in the Heavy fermion compound Ce(Ni$_{0.935}$Pd$_{0.065}$)$_2$Ge$_2$

Electric resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed on a single crystal of the heavy fermion compound Ce(Ni$_{0.935}$Pd$_{0.065}$)$_2$Ge$_2$ in order to study the spin fluctuations near an antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP). The resistivity and the specific heat coefficient for $T \leq$ 1 K exhibit the power law behavior expected for a 3D itinerant AF QCP ($ρ(T) \sim T^{3/2}$ and $γ(T) \sim γ_0 - b T^{1/2}$). However, for 2 $\leq T \leq$ 10 K, the susceptibility and specific heat vary as $log T$ and the resistivity varies linearly with temperature. Furthermore, despite the fact that the resistivity and specific heat exhibit the non-Fermi liquid behavior expected at a QCP, the correlation length, correlation time, and staggered susceptibility of the spin fluctuations remain finite at low temperature. We suggest that these deviations from the divergent behavior expected for a QCP may result from alloy disorder.

Soft striped magnetic fluctuations competing with superconductivity in Fe_{1+x}Te

Neutron spectroscopy is used to investigate the magnetic fluctuations in Fe_{1+x}Te - a parent compound of chalcogenide superconductors. Incommensurate "stripe-like" excitations soften with increased interstitial iron concentration. The energy crossover from incommensurate to stripy fluctuations defines an apparent hour-glass dispersion. Application of sum rules of neutron scattering find that the integrated intensity is inconsistent with an S=1 Fe^{2+} ground state and significantly less than S=2 predicted from weak crystal field arguments pointing towards the Fe^{2+} being in a superposition of orbital states. The results suggest that a highly anisotropic order competes with superconductivity in chalcogenide systems.

The role of random electric fields in relaxors

PbZr_{1-x}Ti_xO_3 (PZT) and Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{1-x}Ti_xO_3 (PMN-$x$PT) are complex lead-oxide perovskites that display exceptional piezoelectric properties for pseudorhombohedral compositions near a tetragonal phase boundary. In PZT these compositions are ferroelectrics, but in PMN-xPT they are relaxors because the dielectric permittivity is frequency dependent and exhibits non-Arrhenius behavior. We show that the nanoscale structure unique to PMN-xPT and other lead-oxide perovskite relaxors is absent in PZT and correlates with a greater than 100% enhancement of the longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient in PMN-xPT relative to that in PZT. By comparing dielectric, structural, lattice dynamical, and piezoelectric measurements on PZT and PMN-xPT, two nearly identical compounds that represent weak and strong random electric field limits, we show that quenched (static) random fields establish the relaxor phase and identify the order parameter.

Molecular Quantum Magnetism in LiZn2Mo3O8

Inelastic neutron scattering for temperatures below 30 K from a powder of LiZn2Mo3O8 demonstrates this triangular-lattice antiferromagnet hosts collective magnetic excitations from spin 1/2 Mo3O13 molecules. Apparently gapless (Δ< 0.2 meV) and extending at least up to 2.5 meV, the low energy magnetic scattering cross section is surprisingly broad in momentum space and involves one third of the spins present above 100 K. The data are compatible with the presence of valence-bonds involving nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor spins forming a disordered or dynamic state.

The magnetic and structural properties near the Lifshitz point in Fe1+xTe

We construct a phase diagram of the parent compound Fe1+xTe as a function of interstitial iron x in terms of the electronic, structural, and magnetic properties. For a concentration of x < 10%, Fe1+xTe undergoes a "semimetal" to metal transition at approximately 70 K that is also first-order and coincident with a structural transition from a tetragonal to a monoclinic unit cell. For x ~ 14%, Fe1+xTe undergoes a second-order phase transition at approximately 58 K corresponding to a "semimetal" to "semimetal" transition along with a structural orthorhombic distortion. At a critical concentration of x ~ 11%, Fe1+xTe undergoes two transitions: the higher temperature one is a second-order transition to an orthorhombic phase with incommensurate magnetic ordering and temperature-dependent propagation vector, while the lower temperature one corresponds to nucleation of a monoclinic phase with a nearly commensurate magnetic wavevector. While both structural and magnetic transitions display similar critical behavior for x < 10% and near the critical concentration of x ~ 11%, samples with large interstitial iron concentrations show a marked deviation between the critical response indicating a decoupling of the order parameters. Analysis of temperature dependent inelastic neutron data reveals incommensurate magnetic fluctuations throughout the Fe1+xTe phase diagram are directly connected to the "semiconductor"-like resistivity above T_N and implicates scattering from spin fluctuations as the primary reason for the semiconducting or poor metallic properties. The results suggest that doping driven Fermi surface nesting maybe the origin of the gapless and incommensurate spin response at large interstitial concentrations.

Common origin of the two types of magnetic fluctuations in iron chalcogenides

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the low energy spin excitations in moderately doped non-superconducting Fe$_{1.01}$Te$_{0.72}$Se$_{0.28}$. The spin excitations in this system contain components near (0.5,0,0) and (0.5,0.5,0) in a-b plane reciprocal lattice units using tetragonal unit cell notation (a=b=3.772 Åand c=6.061 Å). At low energies the scattering is centered around (0.5,0,0). With increasing energy, the spectral weight of low energy spin excitations centered around (0.5,0,0) abruptly shifts around 3 meV to the incommensurate spin excitations centered around (0.5,0.5,0). However both types of spin fluctuations exhibit the identical temperature dependence. These results indicate that the (0.5,0,0) type spin excitations and the incommensurate excitations around the (0.5,0.5,0) position have a common origin and both must be taken into account to understand the nature of magnetism and superconducting pairing in the iron chalcogenides.

Friedel-like Oscillations from Interstitial Iron in Superconducting Fe1+yTe0.62Se0.38

Using polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering we show that interstitial Fe in superconducting Fe_{1+y}Te_{1-x}Se_x induces a magnetic Friedel-like oscillation that diffracts at Q_(in-plane)=(1/2,0) and involves >50 neighboring Fe sites. The interstitial >2 mu_B moment is surrounded by compensating ferromagnetic four spin clusters that may seed double stripe ordering in Fe_{1+y}Te. A semi-metallic 5-band model with (1/2,1/2) Fermi surface nesting and four fold symmetric super-exchange between interstitial Fe and two in-plane nearest neighbors largely accounts for the observed diffraction.

Interstitial iron tuning of the spin fluctuations in Fe1+xTe

Using neutron inelastic scattering, we investigate the low-energy spin fluctuations in Fe1+xTe as a function of both temperature and interstitial iron concentration. For Fe1.057(7)Te the magnetic structure is defined by a commensurate wavevector of (1/2,0,1/2). The spin fluctuations are gapped with a sharp onset at 7 meV and are three dimensional in momentum transfer, becoming two dimensional at higher energy transfers. On doping with interstitial iron, we find in Fe1.141(5)Te the ordering wavevector is located at the (0.38, 0, 1/2) position and the fluctuations are gapless with the intensity peaked at an energy transfer of 4 meV. These results show that the spin fluctuations in the Fe1+xTe system a can be tuned not only through selenium doping, but also with interstitial iron. We also compare these results with superconducting concentrations and in particular the resonance mode in the Fe_1+xTe_1-ySe_y system.

Quantum critical behavior in the heavy Fermion single crystal Ce(Ni$_{0.935}$Pd$_{0.065}$)$_2$Ge$_2$

We have performed magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal of the heavy Fermion compound Ce(Ni$_{0.935}$Pd$_{0.065}$)$_2$Ge$_2$, which is believed to be close to a quantum critical point (QCP) at T = 0. At lowest temperature(1.8-3.5 K), the magnetic susceptibility behaves as $χ(T)-χ(0)$ $\propto$ $T^{-1/6}$ with $χ(0) = 0.032 \times 10^{-6}$ m$^3$/mole (0.0025 emu/mole). For $T<$ 1 K, the specific heat can be fit to the formula $ΔC/T = γ_0 - T^{1/2}$ with $γ_0$ of order 700 mJ/mole-K$^2$. The resistivity behaves as $ρ= ρ_0 + AT^{3/2}$ for temperatures below 2 K. This low temperature behavior for $γ(T)$ and $ρ(T)$ is in accord with the SCR theory of Moriya and Takimoto\cite{Moriya}. The inelastic neutron scattering spectra show a broad peak near 1.5 meV that appears to be independent of $Q$; we interpret this as Kondo scattering with $T_K =$ 17 K. In addition, the scattering is enhanced near $Q$=(1/2, 1/2, 0) with maximum scattering at $ΔE$ = 0.45 meV; we interpret this as scattering from antiferromagnetic fluctuations near the antiferromagnetic QCP.
