Limits on non-minimal Lorentz violating parameters through FCNC and LFV processes

In this work we analyse a non-minimal Lorentz-violating extension of the electroweak theory in the fermionic sector. Firstly we analyse the relation between the CKM rotation in the quark sector and possible contributions of this new coupling to flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) processes. In sequel we look for non-diagonal terms through possible leptonic flavour violation (LFV) decays. Strong bounds are presented to the Lorentz violating parameters of both the quark and the leptonic sectors.

The Doublet Extension of Tensor Gauge Potentials and a Reassessment of the Non-Abelian Topological Mass Mechanism

A well-defined local non-Abelian gauge connection involving a rank-p gauge B-field was introduced a decade ago. This was achieved by introducing doublet groups and doublet-assembled connections that can act on a doublet of matter fields, and so, standard gauging procedures and minimal substitutions are applicable. We provide here a summarized version of this formalism. We also build up doublet-extended gauge-invariant actions for bosonic and fermionic matter fields, and discuss the appearance of novel topological quantities in these doublet-type gauge models. A partner action for higher-spin fields appears in the doublet version of the fermionic matter sector. As an application of the proposed formalism, a gauge-invariant Chern-Simons action in four dimensions is built up; a second order quadratic Yang-Mills type action can also be defined in this doublet framework, but we show that they can only be invariant under a Lie subgroup of our extended gauge symmetry. We finally carry out the task of studying the topological mass generation mechanism in the simplest model combining these actions into a non-Abelian generalization of the Cremmer-Scherk-Kalb-Ramond theory that we also show to be power-counting renormalizable.

Charged branes interactions via Kalb-Ramond field

Because of its versatility, the 2-form field has been employed to describe a multitude of scenarios that range from high energy to condensed matter physics. Pushing forward in this endeavor we study the interaction energy, intermediated by this kind of field, between branes in a variety of configurations. Also, the so-called Cremmer-Scherk-Kalb-Ramond model, which consists of the electromagnetic field coupled to the Kalb-Ramond gauge potential, is considered. It turns out that these models exhibit a much richer class of sources than usually thought, able to intermediate novel forms of interactions in different scenarios.

Considerations on the Graviton Excitation Modes of Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

A new set of projection operators is constructed to suitably handle non-relativistic theories of gravity with anisotropic scaling, including the ones with parity-violating terms. This alternative procedure allows us to discuss unitarity and spectral properties for different formulations of the Horava-Lifshitz gravity. This task, that generally involves lengthy algebraic steps, becomes more systematic and greatly simplified in terms of the projectors we work out. Moreover, this procedure allows us to fix the number of propagating degrees of freedom and the structure of gauge symmetries is readily determined. In order to test the efficacy of the technique at hand, the unitarity and low-energy regime of a general Horava-Lifshitz Gravity model are investigated.

Mass Generation and Related Issues from Exotic Higher Dimensions

The main purpose of this work is to show that massless Dirac equation formulated for non-interacting Majorana-Weyl spinors in higher dimensions, particularly in D=1+9 and D=5+5, can lead to an interpretation of massive Majorana and Dirac spinors in D=1+3. By adopting suitable representations of the Dirac matrices in higher dimensions, we pursue the investigation of which higher dimensional space-times and which mass-shell relation concerning massless Dirac equations in higher dimensions may induce massive spinors in D=1+3. The mixing of the chiral fermions in higher dimensions may induce a mechanism such that four massive Majorana fermions may show up and, at an appropriate limit an almost zero and a huge mass show up with corresponding left-handed and right-handed eigenstates. This mechanism, in a peculiar way, could reassess the See-Saw scheme associated to neutrino with Majorana-type masses. Remarkably the masses of the particles are fixed by the dimension decoupling/reduction scheme based on the mass Lorentz invariant term, where one set of the decoupled dimensions are the "target" coordinates frame and the other set of coordinates is the composing block of the mass term in lower dimensions. This proposal should allow us to understand the generation of hierarchies, such as the fourth generation, for the fermionic masses in D=1+3, or in lower dimensions in general, starting from the constraints between the energy and the momentum in D=n+n. For the initial D=5+5 Majorana-Weyl spinors framework using the Weyl representation to the Dirac matrices we observe an intriguing decomposition of space-time that result in two very equivalent D=1+4 massive spinors which mass term, in D=1+3 included, is originated from the remained/decoupled component and that could induce a Brane-World mechanism.

Discussing Cosmic String Configurations in a Supersymmetric Scenario without Lorentz Invariance

The main goal of this work is to pursue an investigation of cosmic string configurations focusing on possible consequences of the Lorentz-symmetry breaking by a background vector. We analyze the possibility of cosmic strings as a viable source for fermionic Cold Dark Matter particles. Whenever the latter are charged and have mass of the order of $10^{13}GeV$, we propose they could decay into usual cosmic rays. We have also contemplated the sector of neutral particles generated in our model. Indeed, being neutral, these particles are hard to be detected; however, by virtue of the Lorentz-symmetry breaking background vector, it is possible that they may present an electromagnetic interaction with a significant magnetic moment.

Discussing Quantum Aspects of Higher-Derivative 3D-Gravity in the First-Order Formalism

In this paper, we reassess the issue of deriving the propagators and identifying the spectrum of excitations associated to the vielbein and spin connection of (1+2)-D gravity in the presence of dynamical torsion, while working in the first-order formulation. A number of peculiarities is pointed out whenever the Chern-Simons term is taken into account along with a combination of bilinear terms in the torsion tensor. We present a procedure to derive the full set of propagators, based on an algebra of enlarged spin-type operators, and we discuss under which conditions the poles of the tree-level 2-point functions correspond to physical excitations that do not conflict with causality and unitarity.

Graviton Excitations and Lorentz-Violating Gravity with Cosmological Constant

Motivated by the interest raised by the problem of Lorenz-symmetry violating gauge theories in connetion with gravity models, this contribution sets out to provide a general method to systematically study the excitation spectrum of gravity actions which include a Lorentz-symmetry breaking Chern-Simons-type action term for the spin connection. A complete set of spin-type operators is found which accounts for the (Lorentz) violation parameter to all orders and graviton propagators are worked out in a number of different situations.

Thompson's renormalization group method applied to QCD at high energy scale

We use a renormalization group method to treat QCD-vacuum behavior specially closer to the regime of asymptotic freedom. QCD-vacuum behaves effectively like a "paramagnetic system" of a classical theory in the sense that virtual color charges (gluons) emerges in it as a spin effect of a paramagnetic material when a magnetic field aligns their microscopic magnetic dipoles. Due to that strong classical analogy with the paramagnetism of Landau's theory,we will be able to use a certain Landau effective action without temperature and phase transition for just representing QCD-vacuum behavior at higher energies as being magnetization of a paramagnetic material in the presence of a magnetic field $H$. This reasoning will allow us to apply Thompson's approach to such an action in order to extract an "effective susceptibility" ($χ>0$) of QCD-vacuum. It depends on logarithmic of energy scale $u$ to investigate hadronic matter. Consequently we are able to get an ``effective magnetic permeability" ($μ>1$) of such a "paramagnetic vacuum". Actually,as QCD-vacuum must obey Lorentz invariance, the attainment of $μ>1$ must simply require that the "effective electrical permissivity" is $ε<1$ in such a way that $με=1$ ($c^2=1$). This leads to the anti-screening effect where the asymptotic freedom takes place. We will also be able to extend our investigation to include both the diamagnetic fermionic properties of QED-vacuum (screening) and the paramagnetic bosonic properties of QCD-vacuum (anti-screening) into the same formalism by obtaining a $β$-function at 1 loop, where both the bosonic and fermionic contributions are considered.

Casimir Effect for Gauge Scalars: The Kalb-Ramond Case

In this work we calculate the functional generator of the Green's functions of the Kalb-Ramond field in 3+1 dimensions. We also calculate the functional generator, and corresponding Casimir energy, of the same field when it is submitted to boundary conditions on two parallel planes. The boundary conditions we consider can be interpreted as a kind of conducting planes for the field in compearing with the Maxwell case. We compare our result with the standard ones for the scalar and Maxwell fields.

Classical Solutions in a Lorentz-violating Scenario of Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Proca Electrodynamics

Taking as starting point the planar model arising from the dimensional reduction of the Abelian-Higgs Carroll-Field-Jackiw model, we write down and study the extended Maxwell equations and the corresponding wave equations for the potentials. The solutions for these equations correspond to the usual ones for the MCS-Proca system, supplemented with background-dependent correction terms. In the case of a purely timelike background, exact algebraic solutions are presented which possess a similar behavior to the MCS-Proca counterparts near and far from the origin. On the other hand, for a purely spacelike background, only approximate solutions are feasible. They consist of non-trivial analytic expressions with a manifest evidence of spatial anisotropy, which is consistent with the existence of a privileged direction in space. These solutions also behave similarly to the MCS-Proca ones near and far from the origin.

Electron-Electron Bound States in Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Proca QED3

We start from a parity-breaking MCS QED$_{3}$ model with spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry as a framework for evaluation of the electron-electron interaction potential and for attainment of numerical values for the e-e bound state. Three expressions are obtained for the potential according to the polarization state of the scattered electrons. In an energy scale compatible with Condensed Matter electronic excitations, these three potentials become degenerated. The resulting potential is implemented in the Schrodinger equation and the variational method is applied to carry out the electronic binding energy. The resulting binding energies in the scale of 10-100 meV and a correlation length in the scale of 10-30 Angs. are possible indications that the MCS-QED$_{3}$ model adopted may be suitable to address an eventual case of e-e pairing in the presence of parity-symmetry breakdown. The data analyzed here suggest an energy scale of 10-100 meV to fix the breaking of the U(1)-symmetry. PACS numbers: 11.10.Kk 11.15.Ex 74.20.-z 74.72.-h ICEN-PS-01/17

Non-Minimal Coupling to a Lorentz-Violating Background and Topological Implications

The non-minimal coupling of fermions to a background responsible for the breaking of Lorentz symmetry is introduced in Dirac's equation; the non-relativistic regime is contemplated, and the Pauli's equation is used to show how an Aharonov-Casher phase may appear as a natural consequence of the Lorentz violation, once the particle is placed in a region where there is an electric field. Different ways of implementing the Lorentz breaking are presented and, in each case, we show how to relate the Aharonov-Casher phase to the particular components of the background vector or tensor that realises the violation of Lorentz symmetry.

Dimensional Reduction of the Abelian-Higgs Carroll-Field-Jackiw Model

Taking as a starting point a Lorentz non-invariant Abelian-Higgs model defined in 1+3 dimensions, we carry out its dimensional reduction to D=1+2, obtaining a new planar model composed by a Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Proca gauge sector, a massive scalar sector, and a mixing term (involving the fixed background (v^μ) that imposes the Lorentz violation to the reduced model. The propagators of the scalar and massive gauge field are evaluated and the corresponding dispersion relations determined. Based on the poles of the propagators, a causality and unitarity analysis is carried out at tree-level. One then shows that the model is totally causal and unitary.

Lorentz-breaking effects in scalar-tensor theories of gravity

In this work, we study the effects of breaking Lorentz symmetry in scalar-tensor theories of gravity taking torsion into account. We show that a space-time with torsion interacting with a Maxwell field by means of a Chern-Simons-like term is able to explain the optical activity in syncrotron radiation emitted by cosmological distant radio sources. Without specifying the source of the dilaton-gravity, we study the dilaton-solution. We analyse the physical implications of this result in the Jordan-Fierz frame. We also analyse the effects of the Lorentz breaking in the cosmic string formation process. We obtain the solution corresponding to a cosmic string in the presence of torsion by keeping track of the effects of the Chern-Simons coupling and calculate the charge induced on this cosmic string in this framework. We also show that the resulting charged cosmic string gives us important effects concerning the background radiation. The optical activity in this case is also worked out and discussed.

Anti-symmetric rank-2 Matter Field on Superspace for N_{T}=2

In this work, we discuss the interaction between anti-symmetric rank-two tensor matter and topological Yang-Mills fields. The matter field considered here is the rank-2 Avdeev-Chizhov tensor matter field in a suitably extended $N_{T}=2$ SUSY. We start off from the $N_{T}=2$, D=4 superspace formulation and we go over to Riemannian manifolds. The matter field is coupled to the topological Yang-Mills field. We show that both actions are obtained as $Q-$exact forms, which allows us to write the energy-momentum tensor as $Q-$exact observables.

Dimensional Reduction of a Lorentz and CPT-violating Maxwell-Chern-Simons Model

Taking as starting point a Lorentz and CPT non-invariant Chern-Simons-like model defined in 1+3 dimensions, we proceed realizing its dimensional reduction to D=1+2. One then obtains a new planar model, composed by the Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) sector, a Klein-Gordon massless scalar field, and a coupling term that mixes the gauge field to the external vector, $v^μ$. In spite of breaking Lorentz invariance in the particle frame, this model may preserve the CPT symmetry for a single particular choice of $v^μ$. Analyzing the dispersion relations, one verifies that the reduced model exhibits stability, but the causality can be jeopardized by some modes. The unitarity of the gauge sector is assured without any restriction, while the scalar sector is unitary only in the space-like case. PACS numbers: 11.10.Kk; 11.30.Cp; 11.30.Er; 12.60.-i

Remarks on Charged Vortices in the Maxwell-Chern-Simons Model

We study vortex-like configuration in Maxwell-Chern-Simons Electrodynamics. Attention is paid to the similarity it shares with the Nielsen-Olesen solutions at large distances. A magnetic symmetry between a point-like and an azimuthal-like current in this framework is also pointed out. Furthermore, we address the issue of a neutral and spinless particle interacting with a charged vortex, and obtain that the Aharonov-Casher-type phase depends upon mass and distance parameters.

Electron-electron Bound States in Parity-Preserving QED3

By considering the Higgs mechanism in the framework of a parity-preserving Planar Quantum Electrodynamics, one shows that an attractive electron-electron interaction may come out. The e-e interaction potential emerges as the non-relativistic limit of the Moller scattering amplitude and it may result attractive with a suitable choice of parameters. Numerical values of the e-e binding energy are obtained by solving the two-dimensional Schrodinger equation. The existence of bound states is to be viewed as an indicative that this model may be adopted to address the pairing mechanism in some systems endowed with parity-preservation.

Electron-electron attractive interaction in Maxwell-Chern-Simons QED3 at zero temperature

One discusses the issue of low-energy electron-electron bound states in the Maxwell-Chern-Simons model coupled to QED3 with spontaneous breaking of a local U(1)-symmetry. The scattering potential, in the non-relativistic limit, steaming from the electron-electron Moller scattering, mediated by the Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Proca gauge field and the Higgs scalar, might be attractive by fine-tuning properly the physical parameters of the model.

An algebraic proof on the finiteness of Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory in D=3

A rigorous algebraic proof of the full finiteness in all orders of perturbation theory is given for the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory in a general three-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We show the validity of a trace identity, playing the role of a local form of the Callan-Symanzik equation, in all loop orders, which yields the vanishing of the beta-functions associated to the topological mass and gauge coupling constant as well as the anomalous dimensions of the fields.

Dilatonic, Current-Carrying Cosmic String

We study the implications of a scalar-tensorial gravity for the metric of an isolated self-gravitating superconducting cosmic string. These modifications are induced by an arbitrary coupling of a massless scalar field to the usual tensorial field in the gravitational Lagrangian. We derive the metric in the weak-field approximation and we analyse the behaviour of light in this spacetime. We end with some discussions.
