Stability of cycles in a game of Rock-Scissors-Paper-Lizard-Spock

We study a system of ordinary differential equations in R5 that is used as a model both in population dynamics and in game theory, and is known to exhibit a heteroclinic network consisting in the union of four types of elementary heteroclinic cycles. We show the asymptotic stability of the network for parameter values in a range compatible with both population and game dynamics. We obtain estimates of the relative attractiveness of each one of the cycles by computing their stability indices. For the parameter values ensuring the asymptotic stability of the network we relate the attractiveness properties of each cycle to the others. In particular, for three of the cycles we show that if one of them has a weak form of attractiveness, then the other two are completely unstable. We also show the existence of an open region in parameter space where all four cycles are completely unstable and the network is asymptotically stable, giving rise to intricate dynamics that has been observed numerically by other authors.

Recognition of symmetries in reversible maps

We deal with germs of diffeomorphisms that are reversible under an involution. We establish that this condition implies that, in general, both the family of reversing symmetries and the group of symmetries are not finite, in contrast with continuous-time dynamics, where typically there are finitely many reversing symmetries. From this we obtain two chains of fixed-points subspaces of involutory reversing symmetries that we use to obtain geometric information on the discrete dynamics generated by a given diffeomorphism. The results are illustrated by the generic case in arbitrary dimension, when the diffeomorphism is the composition of transversal linear involutions.

Asymptotic stability of robust heteroclinic networks

We provide conditions guaranteeing that certain classes of robust heteroclinic networks are asymptotically stable. We study the asymptotic stability of ac-networks --- robust heteroclinic networks that exist in smooth ${\mathbb Z}^n_2$-equivariant dynamical systems defined in the positive orthant of ${\mathbb R}^n$. Generators of the group ${\mathbb Z}^n_2$ are the transformations that change the sign of one of the spatial coordinates. The ac-network is a union of hyperbolic equilibria and connecting trajectories, where all equilibria belong to the coordinate axes (not more than one equilibrium per axis) with unstable manifolds of dimension one or two. The classification of ac-networks is carried out by describing all possible types of associated graphs. We prove sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of ac-networks. The proof is given as a series of theorems and lemmas that are applicable to the ac-networks and to more general types of networks. Finally, we apply these results to discuss the asymptotic stability of several examples of heteroclinic networks.

Global bifurcations close to symmetry

Heteroclinic cycles involving two saddle-foci, where the saddle-foci share both invariant manifolds, occur persistently in some symmetric differential equations on the 3-dimensional sphere. We analyse the dynamics around this type of cycle in the case when trajectories near the two equilibria turn in the same direction around a 1-dimensional connection - the saddle-foci have the same chirality. When part of the symmetry is broken, the 2-dimensional invariant manifolds intersect transversely creating a heteroclinic network of Bykov cycles. We show that the proximity of symmetry creates heteroclinic tangencies that coexist with hyperbolic dynamics. There are n-pulse heteroclinic tangencies - trajectories that follow the original cycle n times around before they arrive at the other node. Each n-pulse heteroclinic tangency is accumulated by a sequence of (n+1)-pulse ones. This coexists with the suspension of horseshoes defined on an infinite set of disjoint strips, where the first return map is hyperbolic. We also show how, as the system approaches full symmetry, the suspended horseshoes are destroyed, creating regions with infinitely many attracting periodic solutions.

Limit cycles for a class of $\mathbb{Z}_{2n}-$equivariant systems without infinite equilibria

We analyze the dynamics of a class of $\mathbb{Z}_{2n}$-equivariant differential equations on the plane, depending on 4 real parameters. This study is the generalisation to $\mathbb{Z}_{2n}$ of previous works with $\mathbb{Z}_4$ and $\mathbb{Z}_6$ symmetry. We reduce the problem of finding limit cycles to an Abel equation, and provide criteria for proving in some cases uniqueness and hyperbolicity of the limit cycle that surrounds either 1, $2n+1$ or $4n+1$ equilibria, the origin being always one of these points.

Dense heteroclinic tangencies near a Bykov cycle

This article presents a mechanism for the coexistence of hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic dynamics arising in a neighbourhood of a Bykov cycle where trajectories turn in opposite directions near the two nodes --- we say that the nodes have different chirality. We show that in the set of vector fields defined on a three-dimensional manifold, there is a class where tangencies of the invariant manifolds of two hyperbolic saddle-foci occur densely. The class is defined by the presence of the Bykov cycle, and by a condition on the parameters that determine the linear part of the vector field at the equilibria. This has important consequences: the global dynamics is persistently dominated by heteroclinic tangencies and by Newhouse phenomena, coexisting with hyperbolic dynamics arising from transversality. The coexistence gives rise to linked suspensions of Cantor sets, with hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic dynamics, in contrast with the case where the nodes have the same chirality. We illustrate our theory with an explicit example where tangencies arise in the unfolding of a symmetric vector field on the three-dimensional sphere.

Hexagonal Projected Symmetries

In the study of pattern formation in symmetric physical systems a 3-dimensional structure in thin domains is often modelled as 2-dimensional one. We are concerned with functions in $R^3$ that are invariant under the action of a crystallographic group and the symmetries of their projections into a function defined on a plane. We obtain a list of the crystallographic groups for which the projected functions have a hexagonal lattice of periods. The proof is constructive and the result may be used in the study of observed patterns in thin domains, whose symmetries are not expected in 2-dimensional models, like the black-eye pattern.

Hopf bifurcation with tetrahedral and octahedral symmetry

In the study of the periodic solutions of a $Γ$-equivariant dynamical system, the $H~\mathrm{mod}~K$ theorem gives all possible periodic solutions, based on group-theoretical aspects. By contrast, the equivariant Hopf theorem guarantees the existence of families of small-amplitude periodic solutions bifurcating from the origin for each $\mathbf{C}$-axial subgroup of $Γ\times\mathbb{S}^1$. In this article we compare the bifurcation of periodic solutions for generic differential equations equivariant under the full group of symmetries of the tetrahedron and the group of rotational symmetries of the cube. The two groups are the image of inequivalent representations of the symmetric group $S_4$. The possible spatial symmetries of bifurcating solutions are different, even though the two groups yield the same group of matrices $Γ\times\mathbb{S}^1$. The same group of matrices occurs again as the extension $Γ\times\mathbb{S}^1$ when $Γ$ is the full group of symmetries of the cube. For these three groups, while characterizing the Hopf bifurcation, we identify which periodic solution types, whose existence is guaranteed by the $H~\mathrm{mod}~K$ theorem, are obtainable by Hopf bifurcation from the origin.

Partial symmetry breaking and heteroclinic tangencies

We study some global aspects of the bifurcation of an equivariant family of volume-contracting vector fields on the three-dimensional sphere. When part of the symmetry is broken, the vector fields exhibit Bykov cycles. Close to the symmetry, we investigate the mechanism of the emergence of heteroclinic tangencies coexisting with transverse connections. We find persistent suspended horseshoes accompanied by attracting periodic trajectories with long periods.

Spiralling dynamics near heteroclinic networks

There are few explicit examples in the literature of vector fields exhibiting complex dynamics that may be proved analytically. We construct explicitly a {two parameter family of vector fields} on the three-dimensional sphere $\EU^3$, whose flow has a spiralling attractor containing the following: two hyperbolic equilibria, heteroclinic trajectories connecting them {transversely} and a non-trivial hyperbolic, invariant and transitive set. The spiralling set unfolds a heteroclinic network between two symmetric saddle-foci and contains a sequence of topological horseshoes semiconjugate to full shifts over an alphabet with more and more symbols, {coexisting with Newhouse phenonema}. The vector field is the restriction to $\EU^3$ of a polynomial vector field in $\RR^4$. In this article, we also identify global bifurcations that induce chaotic dynamics of different types.
