Homogenization and phase separation with space dependent wells -- The subcritical case

A variational model for the interaction between homogenization and phase separation is considered. The focus is on the regime where the latter happens at a smaller scale than the former, and when the wells of the double well potential are allowed to move and to have discontinuities. The zeroth and first order $Γ$-limits are identified. The topology considered for the latter is that of two-scale, since it encodes more information on the asymptotic local microstructure. In particular, when the wells are non constant, the first order $Γ$-limit describes the contribution of microscopic phase separation, also in situations where there is no macroscopic phase separation. As a corollary, the minimum of the mass constrained minimization problem is characterized, and it is shown to depend on whether or not the wells are discontinuous. In the process of proving these results, the theory of inhomogeneous Modica Mortola functionals is strengthened.

A homogenization result in the gradient theory of phase transitions

A variational model in the context of the gradient theory for fluid-fluid phase transitions with small scale heterogeneities is studied. In particular, the case where the scale $\varepsilon$ of the small homogeneities is of the same order of the scale governing the phase transition is considered. The interaction between homogenization and the phase transitions process will lead, in the limit as $\varepsilon\to0$, to an anisotropic interfacial energy.

Homogenization of quasi-crystalline functionals via two-scale-cut-and-project convergence

We consider a homogenization problem associated with quasi-crystalline multiple integrals of the form \begin{equation*} \begin{aligned} u_\varepsilon\in L^p(Ω;\mathbb{R}^d) \mapsto \int_Ωf_R\Big(x,\frac{x}{\varepsilon}, u_\varepsilon(x)\Big)\, dx, \end{aligned} \end{equation*} where $u_\varepsilon$ is subject to constant-coefficient linear partial differential constraints. The quasi-crystalline structure of the underlying composite is encoded in the dependence on the second variable of the Lagrangian, $f_R$, and is modeled via the cut-and-project scheme that interprets the heterogeneous microstructure to be homogenized as an irrational subspace of a higher-dimensional space. A key step in our analysis is the characterization of the quasi-crystalline two-scale limits of sequences of the vector fields $u_\varepsilon$ that are in the kernel of a given constant-coefficient linear partial differential operator, $\mathcal{A}$, that is, $\mathcal{A} u _\varepsilon =0$. Our results provide a generalization of related ones in the literature concerning the ${\rm \mathcal{A} =curl } $ case to more general differential operators $\mathcal{A}$ with constant coefficients, and without coercivity assumptions on the Lagrangian $f_R$.

On the motion of curved dislocations in three dimensions: Simplified linearized elasticity

It is shown that in core-radius cutoff regularized simplified elasticity (where the elastic energy depends quadratically on the full displacement gradient rather than its symmetrized version), the force on a dislocation curve by the negative gradient of the elastic energy asymptotically approaches the mean curvature of the curve as the cutoff radius converges to zero. Rigorous error bounds in Hölder spaces are provided. As an application, convergence of dislocations moving by the gradient flow of the elastic energy to dislocations moving by the gradient flow of the arclength functional, when the motion law is given by an $H^1$-type dissipation, and convergence to curve shortening flow in co-dimension $2$ for the usual $L^2$-dissipation is established. In the second scenario, existence and regularity are assumed while the $H^1$-gradient flow is treated in full generality (for short time). The methods developed here are a blueprint for the more physical setting of linearized isotropic elasticity.

A chromaticity-brightness model for color images denoising in a Meyer's "u+v" framework

A variational model for imaging segmentation and denoising color images is proposed. The model combines Meyer's "u+v" decomposition with a chromaticity-brightness framework and is expressed by a minimization of energy integral functionals depending on a small parameter $\epsi>0$. The asymptotic behavior as $\epsi\to0^+$ is characterized, and convergence of infima, almost minimizers, and energies are established. In particular, an integral representation of the lower semicontinuous envelope, with respect to the $L^1$-norm, of functionals with linear growth and defined for maps taking values on a certain compact manifold is provided. This study escapes the realm of previous results since the underlying manifold has boundary, and the integrand and its recession function fail to satisfy hypotheses commonly assumed in the literature. The main tools are $Γ$-convergence and relaxation techniques.

Asymptotic Analysis of Second Order Nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Type Functionals

In this paper the study of a nonlocal second order Cahn-Hilliard-type singularly perturbed family of functions is undertaken. The kernels considered include those leading to Gagliardo fractional seminorms for gradients. Using Gamma convergence the integral representation of the limit energy is characterized leading to an anisotropic surface energy on interfaces separating different phases.

Domain formation in membranes near the onset of instability

The formation of microdomains, also called rafts, in biomembranes can be attributed to the surface tension of the membrane. In order to model this phenomenon, a model involving a coupling between the local composition and the local curvature was proposed by Seul and Andelman in 1995. In addition to the familiar Cahn-Hilliard/Modica-Mortola energy, there are additional `forces' that prevent large domains of homogeneous concentration. This is taken into account by the bending energy of the membrane, which is coupled to the value of the order parameter, and reflects the notion that surface tension associated with a slightly curved membrane influences the localization of phases as the geometry of the lipids has an effect on the preferred placement on the membrane. The main result of the paper is the study of the $Γ$-convergence of this family of energy functionals, involving nonlocal as well as negative terms. Since the minimizers of the limiting energy have minimal interfaces, the physical interpretation is that, within a sufficiently strong interspecies surface tension and a large enough sample size, raft microdomains are not formed.

Homogenization for A-quasiconvexity with variable coefficients

A homogenization result for a family of oscillating integral energies is presented, where the fields under consideration are subjected to first order linear differential constraints depending on the space variable x. The work is based on the theory of A-quasiconvexity with variable coefficients and on two-scale convergence techniques, and generalizes the previously obtained results in the case in which the differential constraints are imposed by means of a linear first order differential operator with constant coefficients. The identification of the relaxed energy in the framework of A-quasiconvexity with variable coefficients is also recovered as a corollary of the homogenization result.

Multiscale homogenization in Kirchhoff's nonlinear plate theory

The interplay between multiscale homogenization and dimension reduction for nonlinear elastic thin plates is analyzed in the case in which the scaling of the energy corresponds to Kirchhoff's nonlinear bending theory for plates. Different limit models are deduced depending on the relative ratio between the thickness parameter $h$ and the two homogenization scales $\ep$ and $\ep^2$.

Regularity in Time for Weak Solutions of a Continuum Model for Epitaxial Growth with Elasticity on Vicinal Surfaces

The evolution equation derived by Xiang (SIAM J. Appl. Math. 63:241--258, 2002) to describe vicinal surfaces in heteroepitaxial growth is $$ h_t=-\left[ H(h_x)+\left(h_x^{-1}+h_x \right) h_{xx}\right]_{xx}, $$ where $h$ denotes the surface height of the film, and $H$ is the Hilbert transform. Existence of solutions was obtained by Dal Maso, Fonseca and Leoni (Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 212: 1037--1064, 2014). The regularity in time was left unresolved. The aim of this paper is to prove existence, uniqueness, and Lipschitz regularity in time for weak solutions, under suitable assumptions on the initial datum.

Regularity Results for an Optimal Design Problem with a Volume Constraint

Regularity results for minimal configurations of variational problems involving both bulk and surface energies and subject to a volume constraint are established. The bulk energies are convex functions with p-power growth, but are otherwise not subjected to any further structure conditions. For a minimal configuration (u;E), Hoelder continuity of the function u is proved as well as partial regularity of the boundary of the minimal set E. Moreover, full regularity of the boundary of the minimal set is obtained under suitable closeness assumptions on the eigenvalues of the bulk energies.

Dynamics for Systems of Screw Dislocations

The goal of this paper is the analytical validation of a model of Cermelli and Gurtin for an evolution law for systems of screw dislocations under the assumption of antiplane shear. The motion of the dislocations is restricted to a discrete set of glide directions, which are properties of the material. The evolution law is given by a "maximal dissipation criterion", leading to a system of differential inclusions. Short time existence, uniqueness, cross-slip, and fine cross-slip of solutions are proved.

Motion of three-dimensional elastic films by anisotropic surface diffusion with curvature regularization

Short time existence for a surface diffusion evolution equation with curvature regularization is proved in the context of epitaxially strained three-dimensional films. This is achieved by implementing a minimizing movement scheme, which is hinged on the $H^{-1}$-gradient flow structure underpinning the evolution law. Long-time behavior and Liapunov stability in the case of initial data close to a flat configuration are also addressed.

Second Order Asymptotic Development for the Anisotropic Cahn-Hilliard Functional

The asymptotic behavior of an anisotropic Cahn-Hilliard functional with prescribed mass and Dirichlet boundary condition is studied when the parameter epsilon that determines the width of the transition layers tends to zero. The double-well potential is assumed to be even and equal to |s-1|^b near s=1, with 1<b<2. The first order term in the asymptotic development by Gamma-convergence is well-known, and is related to a suitable anisotropic perimeter of the interface. Here it is shown that, under these assumptions, the second order term is zero, which gives an estimate on the rate of convergence of the minimum values.
