Non-interpenetration conditions in the passage from nonlinear to linearized Griffith fracture

We characterize the passage from nonlinear to linearized Griffith-fracture theories under non-interpenetration constraints. In particular, sequences of deformations satisfying a Ciarlet-Nečas condition in SBV^2 and for which a convergence of the energies is ensured, are shown to admit asymptotic representations in GSBD^2 satisfying a suitable contact condition. With an explicit counterexample, we prove that this result fails if convergence of the energies does not hold. We further prove that each limiting displacement satisfying the contact condition can be approximated by an energy-convergent sequence of deformations fulfilling a Ciarlet-Nečas condition. The proof relies on a piecewise Korn-Poincaré inequality in GSBD2, on a careful blow-up analysis around jump points, as well as on a refined GSBD^2-density result guaranteeing enhanced contact conditions for the approximants.

Structural changes in nonlocal denoising models arising through bi-level parameter learning

We introduce a unified framework based on bi-level optimization schemes to deal with parameter learning in the context of image processing. The goal is to identify the optimal regularizer within a family depending on a parameter in a general topological space. Our focus lies on the situation with non-compact parameter domains, which is, for example, relevant when the commonly used box constraints are disposed of. To overcome this lack of compactness, we propose a natural extension of the upper-level functional to the closure of the parameter domain via Gamma-convergence, which captures possible structural changes in the reconstruction model at the edge of the domain. Under two main assumptions, namely, Mosco-convergence of the regularizers and uniqueness of minimizers of the lower-level problem, we prove that the extension coincides with the relaxation, thus admitting minimizers that relate to the parameter optimization problem of interest. We apply our abstract framework to investigate a quartet of practically relevant models in image denoising, all featuring nonlocality. The associated families of regularizers exhibit qualitatively different parameter dependence, describing a weight factor, an amount of nonlocality, an integrability exponent, and a fractional order, respectively. After the asymptotic analysis that determines the relaxation in each of the four settings, we finally establish theoretical conditions on the data that guarantee structural stability of the models and give examples of when stability is lost.

Magnetoelastic thin films at large strains

Starting from the three-dimensional setting, we derive a limit model of a thin magnetoelastic film by means of Γ-convergence techniques. As magnetization vectors are defined on the elastically deformed configuration, our model features both Lagrangian and Eulerian terms. This calls for qualifying admissible three-dimensional deformations of planar domains in terms of injectivity. In addition, a careful treatment of the Maxwell system in the deformed film is required.

Separately Global Solutions to Rate-Independent Processes in Large-Strain Inelasticity

In this paper, we introduce the notion of separately global solutions for large-strain rate-independent systems, and we provide an existence result for a model describing bulk damage. Our analysis covers non-convex energies blowing up for extreme compressions, yields solutions excluding interpenetration of matter, and allows to handle nonlinear couplings of the deformation and the internal variable featuring both Eulerian and Lagrangian terms. In particular, motivated by the theory developed in [49] in the small strain setting, and for separately convex energies we provide a solution concept suitable for large strain inelasticity.

Two-well linearization for solid-solid phase transitions

In this paper we consider nonlinearly elastic, frame-indifferent, and singularly perturbed two-well models for materials undergoing solid-solid phase transitions in any space dimensions, and we perform a simultaneous passage to sharp-interface and small-strain limits. Sequences of deformations with equibounded energies are decomposed via suitable Caccioppoli partitions into the sum of piecewise constant rigid movements and suitably rescaled displacements. These converge to limiting partitions, deformations, and displacements, respectively. Whereas limiting deformations are simple laminates whose gradients only attain two values, the limiting displacements belong to the class of special functions with bounded variation (SBV). The latter feature elastic contributions measuring the distance to simple laminates, as well as jumps associated to two consecutive phase transitions having vanishing distance, and thus not being detected by the limiting deformations. By Gamma-convergence we identify an effective limiting model given by the sum of a quadratic linearized elastic energy in terms of displacements along with two surface terms. The first one is proportional to the total length of interfaces created by jumps in the gradient of the limiting deformation. The second one is proportional to twice the total length of interfaces created by jumps in the limiting displacement, as well as by the boundaries of limiting partitions. A main tool of our analysis is a novel two-well rigidity estimate which has been derived in [32] for a model with anisotropic second-order perturbation.

Nonlocal-to-local convergence of Cahn-Hilliard equations: Neumann boundary conditions and viscosity terms

We consider a class of nonlocal viscous Cahn-Hilliard equations with Neumann boundary conditions for the chemical potential. The double-well potential is allowed to be singular (e.g. of logarithmic type), while the singularity of the convolution kernel does not fall in any available existence theory under Neumann boundary conditions. We prove well-posedness for the nonlocal equation in a suitable variational sense. Secondly, we show that the solutions to the nonlocal equation converge to the corresponding solutions to the local equation, as the convolution kernels approximate a Dirac delta. The asymptotic behaviour is analyzed by means of monotone analysis and Gamma convergence results, both when the limiting local Cahn-Hilliard equation is of viscous type and of pure type.

Homogenization for A-quasiconvexity with variable coefficients

A homogenization result for a family of oscillating integral energies is presented, where the fields under consideration are subjected to first order linear differential constraints depending on the space variable x. The work is based on the theory of A-quasiconvexity with variable coefficients and on two-scale convergence techniques, and generalizes the previously obtained results in the case in which the differential constraints are imposed by means of a linear first order differential operator with constant coefficients. The identification of the relaxed energy in the framework of A-quasiconvexity with variable coefficients is also recovered as a corollary of the homogenization result.

Multiscale homogenization in Kirchhoff's nonlinear plate theory

The interplay between multiscale homogenization and dimension reduction for nonlinear elastic thin plates is analyzed in the case in which the scaling of the energy corresponds to Kirchhoff's nonlinear bending theory for plates. Different limit models are deduced depending on the relative ratio between the thickness parameter $h$ and the two homogenization scales $\ep$ and $\ep^2$.

Quasistatic evolution models for thin plates arising as low energy Gamma-limits of finite plasticity

In this paper we deduce by Γ-convergence some partially and fully linearized quasistatic evolution models for thin plates, in the framework of finite plasticity. Denoting by ε the thickness of the plate, we study the case where the scaling factor of the elasto- plastic energy is of order ε^ (2α-2), with α>=3. We show that solutions to the three- dimensional quasistatic evolution problems converge, as the thickness of the plate tends to zero, to a quasistatic evolution associated to a suitable reduced model depending on α.

Thin-walled beams with a cross-section of arbitrary geometry: derivation of linear theories starting from 3D nonlinear elasticity

The subject of this paper is the rigorous derivation of lower dimensional models for a nonlinearly elastic thin-walled beam whose cross-section is given by a thin tubular neighbourhood of a smooth curve. Denoting by h and δ_h, respectively, the diameter and the thickness of the cross-section, we analyse the case where the scaling factor of the elastic energy is of order ε_h^2, with ε_h/δ_h^2 \rightarrow l \in [0, +\infty). Different linearized models are deduced according to the relative order of magnitude of δ_h with respect to h.

Convergence of equilibria of thin elastic rods under physical growth conditions for the energy density

The subject of this paper is the study of the asymptotic behaviour of the equilibrium configurations of a nonlinearly elastic thin rod, as the diameter of the cross-section tends to zero. Convergence results are established assuming physical growth conditions for the elastic energy density and suitable scalings of the applied loads, that correspond at the limit to different rod models: the constrained linear theory, the analogous of von Kármán plate theory for rods, and the linear theory.
