Visco-energetic solutions for a model of crack growth in brittle materials

Visco-energetic solutions have been recently advanced as a new solution concept for rate-independent systems, alternative to energetic solutions/quasistatic evolutions and balanced viscosity solutions. In the spirit of this novel concept, we revisit the analysis of the variational model proposed by Francfort and Marigo for the quasi-static crack growth in brittle materials, in the case of antiplane shear. In this context, visco-energetic solutions can be constructed by perturbing the time incremental scheme for quasistatic evolutions by means of a viscous correction inspired by the term introduced by Almgren, Taylor, and Wang in the study of mean curvature flows. With our main result we prove the existence of a visco-energetic solution with a given initial crack. We also show that, if the cracks have a finite number of tips evolving smoothly on a given time interval, visco-energetic solutions comply with Griffith's criterion.

A global method for deterministic and stochastic homogenisation in $BV$

In this paper we study the deterministic and stochastic homogenisation of free-discontinuity functionals under \emph{linear} growth and coercivity conditions. The main novelty of our deterministic result is that we work under very general assumptions on the integrands which, in particular, are not required to be periodic in the space variable. Combining this result with the pointwise Subadditive Ergodic Theorem by Akcoglu and Krengel, we prove a stochastic homogenisation result, in the case of stationary random integrands. In particular, we characterise the limit integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas, as in the classical case of periodic homogenisation.

Asymptotic Analysis of Second Order Nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Type Functionals

In this paper the study of a nonlocal second order Cahn-Hilliard-type singularly perturbed family of functions is undertaken. The kernels considered include those leading to Gagliardo fractional seminorms for gradients. Using Gamma convergence the integral representation of the limit energy is characterized leading to an anisotropic surface energy on interfaces separating different phases.

One-dimensional swimmers in viscous fluids: dynamics, controllability, and existence of optimal controls

In this paper we study a mathematical model of one-dimensional swimmers performing a planar motion while fully immersed in a viscous fluid. The swimmers are assumed to be of small size, and all inertial effects are neglected. Hydrodynamic interactions are treated in a simplified way, using the local drag approximation of resistive force theory. We prove existence and uniqueness of the solution of the equations of motion driven by shape changes of the swimmer. Moreover, we prove a controllability result showing that given any pair of initial and final states, there exists a history of shape changes such that the resulting motion takes the swimmer from the initial to the final state. We give a constructive proof, based on the composition of elementary maneuvers (straightening and its inverse, rotation, translation), each of which represents the solution of an interesting motion planning problem. Finally, we prove the existence of solutions for the optimal control problem of finding, among the histories of shape changes taking the swimmer from an initial to a final state, the one of minimal energetic cost.

Second Order Asymptotic Development for the Anisotropic Cahn-Hilliard Functional

The asymptotic behavior of an anisotropic Cahn-Hilliard functional with prescribed mass and Dirichlet boundary condition is studied when the parameter epsilon that determines the width of the transition layers tends to zero. The double-well potential is assumed to be even and equal to |s-1|^b near s=1, with 1<b<2. The first order term in the asymptotic development by Gamma-convergence is well-known, and is related to a suitable anisotropic perimeter of the interface. Here it is shown that, under these assumptions, the second order term is zero, which gives an estimate on the rate of convergence of the minimum values.

Approximation of Relaxed Dirichlet Problems by Boundary Value problems in perforated domains

Given an elliptic operator~$L$ on a bounded domain~$Ω\subseteq {\bf R}^n$, and a positive Radon measure~$μ$ on~$Ω$, not charging polar sets, we discuss an explicit approximation procedure which leads to a sequence of domains~$Ω_h \subseteq Ω$ with the following property: for every~$f\in H^{-1}(Ω)$ the sequence~$u_h$ of the solutions of the Dirichlet problems~$L\, u_h=f$ in~$Ω_h$, $u_h=0$ on~$\partial Ω_h$, extended to 0 in~$Ω\setminus Ω_h$, converges to the solution of the \lq\lq relaxed Dirichlet problem\rq\rq\ $L\,u+μu=f$ in~$Ω$, $u=0$ on~$\partial Ω$.
