A classification of exceptional components in group algebras over abelian number fields

When considering the unit group of $\mathcal{O}_F G$ ($\mathcal{O}_F$ the ring of integers of an abelian number field $F$ and a finite group $G$) certain components in the Wedderburn decomposition of $FG$ cause problems for known generic constructions of units; these components are called exceptional. Exceptional components are divided into two types: type 1 are division rings, type 2 are $2 \times 2$-matrix rings. For exceptional components of type 1 we provide infinite classes of division rings by describing the seven cases of minimal groups (w.r.t. quotients) having those division rings in their Wedderburn decomposition over $F$. We also classify the exceptional components of type 2 appearing in group algebras of a finite group over number fields $F$ by describing all 58 finite groups $G$ having a faithful exceptional Wedderburn component of this type in $FG$.

Describing units of integral group rings up to commensurability

We restrict the type of $2 \times 2$-matrices which can occur as simple components in the Wedderburn decomposition of the rational group algebra of a finite group. This results in a description up to commensurability of the group of units of the integral group ring $\mathbb Z G$ for all finite groups $G$ that do not have a non-commutative Frobenius complement as a quotient.

On idempotents and the number of simple components of semisimple group algebra

We describe the primitive central idempotents of the group algebra over a number field of finite monomial groups. We give also a description of the Wedderburn decomposition of the group algebra over a number field for finite strongly monomial groups. Further, for this class of group algebras, we describe when the number of simple components agrees with the number of simple components of the rational group algebra. Finally, we give a formula for the rank of the central units of the group ring over the ring of integers of a number field for a strongly monomial group.

Group rings of finite strongly monomial groups: central units and primitive idempotents

We compute the rank of the group of central units in the integral group ring $\Z G$ of a finite strongly monomial group $G$. The formula obtained is in terms of the strong Shoda pairs of $G$. Next we construct a virtual basis of the group of central units of $\Z G$ for a class of groups $G$ properly contained in the finite strongly monomial groups. Furthermore, for another class of groups $G$ inside the finite strongly monomial groups, we give an explicit construction of a complete set of orthogonal primitive idempotents of $\Q G$. Finally, we apply these results to describe finitely many generators of a subgroup of finite index in the group of units of $\Z G$, this for metacyclic groups $G$ of the form $G=C_{q^m}\rtimes C_{p^n}$ with $p$ and $q$ different primes and the cyclic group $C_{p^n}$ of order $p^n$ acting faithfully on the cyclic group $C_{q^m}$ of order $q^m$.

Central units of integral group rings

We give an explicit description for a basis of a subgroup of finite index in the group of central units of the integral group ring $\Z G$ of a finite abelian-by-supersolvable group such that every cyclic subgroup of order not a divisor of 4 or 6 is subnormal in $G$. The basis elements turn out to be a natural product of conjugates of Bass units. This extends and generalizes a result of Jespers, Parmenter and Sehgal showing that the Bass units generate a subgroup of finite index in the center $\mathcal{Z} (\U (\Z G))$ of the unit group $\U (\Z G)$ in case $G$ is a finite nilpotent group. Next, we give a new construction of units that generate a subgroup of finite index in $\mathcal{Z}(\U(\Z G))$ for all finite strongly monomial groups $G$. We call these units generalized Bass units. Finally, we show that the commutator group $\U(\Z G)/\U(\Z G)'$ and $\mathcal{Z}(\U(\Z G))$ have the same rank if $G$ is a finite group such that $\Q G$ has no epimorphic image which is either a non-commutative division algebra other than a totally definite quaternion algebra, or a two-by-two matrix algebra over a division algebra with center either the rationals or a quadratic imaginary extension of $\Q$. This allows us to prove that in this case the natural images of the Bass units of $\Z G$ generate a subgroup of finite index in $\U(\Z G)/\U(\Z G)'$.

Writing units of integral group rings of finite abelian groups as a product of Bass units

We give a constructive proof of the theorem of Bass and Milnor saying that if $G$ is a finite abelian group then the Bass units of the integral group ring $\Z G$ generate a subgroup of finite index in its units group $\U(\Z G)$. Our proof provides algorithms to represent some units that contribute to only one simple component of $\Q G$ and generate a subgroup of finite index in $\U(\Z G)$ as product of Bass units. We also obtain a basis $B$ formed by Bass units of a free abelian subgroup of finite index in $\U(\Z G)$ and give, for an arbitrary Bass unit $b$, an algorithm to express $b^{φ(|G|)}$ as a product of a trivial unit and powers of at most two units in this basis $B$.
