Integrability from supersymmetric duality: a short review

Integrable models of statistical mechanics play a prominent role in modern mathematical physics, especially in conformal field theory, knot theory, combinatorics, topology, etc. In this brief review, we discuss a program of constructing integrable lattice spin models with the nearest neighbor interaction using methods inspired by the supersymmetric gauge theory computations, called gauge/YBE correspondence. After a brief introduction to the topic, we review some recent examples of this correspondence and the role of special functions and symmetries. Finally, we discuss future directions of research.

Lens partition function, pentagon identity and star-triangle relation

We study the three-dimensional lens partition function for $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetric gauge dual theories on $S^3/\mathbb{Z}_r$ by using the gauge/YBE correspondence. This correspondence relates supersymmetric gauge theories to exactly solvable models of statistical mechanics. The equality of partition functions for the three-dimensional supersymmetric dual theories can be written as an integral identity for hyperbolic hypergeometric functions. We obtain such an integral identity which can be written as the star-triangle relation for Ising type integrable models and as the integral pentagon identity. The latter represents the basic 2-3 Pachner move for triangulated 3-manifolds. A special case of our integral identity can be used for proving orthogonality and completeness relation of the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for the self-dual continuous series of $U_q(osp(1|2))$.

Gamma function solutions to the star-triangle equation

In the paper, we clarify some relations between solutions to the star-triangle equation via the gauge/YBE correspondence. We consider two solutions to the star-triangle relation in terms of Euler's gamma function. We derive these solutions from the reduction of certain basic and hyperbolic hypergeometric integral identities. These identities can be interpreted as equality of the supersymmetric partition functions of a specific three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric dual theories.

Integral pentagon relations for 3d superconformal indices

The superconformal index of a three-dimensional supersymmetric field theory can be expressed in terms of basic hypergeometric integrals. By comparing the indices of dual theories, one can find new integral identities for basic hypergeometric integrals. Some of these integral identities have the form of the pentagon identity which can be interpreted as the 2-3 Pachner move for triangulated 3-manifolds.

A new pentagon identity for the tetrahedron index

Recently Kashaev, Luo and Vartanov, using the reduction from a four-dimensional superconformal index to a three-dimensional partition function, found a pentagon identity for a special combination of hyperbolic Gamma functions. Following their idea we have obtained a new pentagon identity for a certain combination of so-called tetrahedron indices arising from the equality of superconformal indices of dual three-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric theories and give a mathematical proof of it.

Extended global symmetries for 4d N=1 SQCD theories

In arXiv:0811.1909 Spiridonov and Vartanov, using the superconformal index technique, found that 4-dimensional N=1 SQCD theory with SU(2) gauge group and four flavors has 72 dual representations. Recently in arXiv:1209.1404 the authors showed that these dual theories, when coupled to 5d hypermultiplets with specific boundary conditions have an extended E_7 global symmetry. In this work we find that for a reduced theory with 3 flavors the explicit SU(6) global symmetry is enhanced to an E_6 symmetry in the presence of 5d hypermultiplets. We also show connections between indices of different theories in 3 and 4 dimensions.

Superconformal indices and partition functions for supersymmetric field theories

Recently there was a substantial progress in understanding of supersymmetric theories (in particular, their BPS spectrum) in space-times of different dimensions due to the exact computation of superconformal indices and partition functions using localization method. Here we discuss a connection of 4d superconformal indices and 3d partition functions using a particular example of supersymmetric theories with matter in antisymmetric representation.

Anisotropic hydrodynamics, holography and the chiral magnetic effect

We discuss a possible dependence of the chiral magnetic effect (CME) on the elliptic flow coefficient v2. We first study this in a hydrodynamic model for a static anisotropic plasma with multiple anomalous U(1) currents. In the case of two charges, one axial and one vector, the CME formally appears as a first-order transport coefficient in the vector current. We compute this transport coefficient and show its dependence on v2. We also determine the CME-coefficient from first-order corrections to the dual AdS background using the fluid-gravity duality. For small anisotropies, we find numerical agreement with the hydrodynamic result.
