Resonance-inclined optical nuclear spin polarization of liquids in diamond structures

Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) of molecules in a solution at room temperature has potential to revolutionize nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging. The prevalent methods for achieving DNP in solutions are typically most effective in the regime of small interaction correlation times between the electron and nuclear spins, limiting the size of accessible molecules. To solve this limitation, we design a mechanism for DNP in the liquid phase that is applicable for large interaction correlation times. Importantly, while this mechanism makes use of a resonance condition similar to solid-state DNP, the polarization transfer is robust to a relatively large detuning from the resonance due to molecular motion. We combine this scheme with optically polarized nitrogen vacancy (NV) center spins in nanodiamonds to design a setup that employs optical pumping and is therefore not limited by room temperature electron thermal polarisation. We illustrate numerically the effectiveness of the model in a flow cell containing nanodiamonds immobilized in a hydrogel, polarising flowing water molecules 4700-fold above thermal polarisation in a magnetic field of 0.35 T, in volumes detectable by current NMR scanners.

Efficient entanglement length measurements for photonic cluster state sources

We present a procedure for confirming the generation of long strings of photons in an entangled (cluster) state that does not rely on complete state tomography and that works even at low collection efficiencies. The scheme has the added advantage of being passive - it does not require switching of optical elements to perform measurements in different bases for instance.

Symmetry-protected phases for measurement-based quantum computation

Ground states of spin lattices can serve as a resource for measurement-based quantum computation. Ideally, the ability to perform quantum gates via measurements on such states would be insensitive to small variations in the Hamiltonian. Here, we describe a class of symmetry-protected topological orders in one-dimensional systems, any one of which ensures the perfect operation of the identity gate. As a result, measurement-based quantum gates can be a robust property of an entire phase in a quantum spin lattice, when protected by an appropriate symmetry.

A unified analytical model for extraordinary transmission in subwavelength metallic gratings

We present an intuitive analytical model for extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through corrugated metallic films. In the framework of this model, EOT emerges from standing wave resonances of the different diffraction orders, and is an inherent property of periodic structures, which does not require specific polarization dependent properties such as surface plasmons. The model correctly predicts the conditions for the EOT resonances in various geometrical configurations, in both TE and TM polarizations, and in the subwavelength and non-subwavelength spectral regimes, using the same underlying mechanism.
