Microscopic Relaxation Channels in Materials for Superconducting Qubits

Despite mounting evidence that materials imperfections are a major obstacle to practical applications of superconducting qubits, connections between microscopic material properties and qubit coherence are poorly understood. Here, we perform measurements of transmon qubit relaxation times T1T_1 in parallel with spectroscopy and microscopy of the thin polycrystalline niobium films used in qubit fabrication. By comparing results for films deposited using three techniques, we reveal correlations between T1T_1 and grain size, enhanced oxygen diffusion along grain boundaries, and the concentration of suboxides near the surface. Physical mechanisms connect these microscopic properties to residual surface resistance and T1T_1 through losses arising from the grain boundaries and from defects in the suboxides. Further, experiments show that the residual resistance ratio can be used as a figure of merit for qubit lifetime. This comprehensive approach to understanding qubit decoherence charts a pathway for materials-driven improvements of superconducting qubit performance.

Tuning spin excitations in magnetic films by confinement

Spin excitations of magnetic thin films are the founding element for novel transport concepts in spintronics, magnonics, and magnetic devices in general. While spin dynamics have been extensively studied in bulk materials, their behaviour in mesoscopic films is less known due to experimental limitations. Here, we employ Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering to investigate the spin excitation spectrum in mesoscopic Fe films, from bulk-like down to 3 unit cells thick. In bulk-like samples, we find isotropic, dispersive ferromagnons consistent with the dispersion observed by neutron scattering in bulk single crystals. As the thickness is reduced, these ferromagnons survive and evolve anisotropically: renormalising to lower energies along the out-of-plane direction while retaining their dispersion in the in-plane direction. This thickness dependence is captured by simple Heisenberg model calculations accounting for the confinement in the out-of-plane direction through the loss of Fe bonds. Our findings highlight the effects of mesoscopic scaling on spin dynamics and identify thickness as a knob for fine-tuning and controlling magnetic properties in films.

Exploring itinerant states in divalent hexaborides using rare-earth LL edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

We present a study of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra collected at the rare-earth LL edges of divalent hexaborides YbB6_6 and EuB6_6. In both systems, RIXS-active features are observed at two distinct resonances separated by ∼10\sim10 eV in incident energy, with angle-dependence suggestive of distinct photon scattering processes. RIXS spectra collected at the divalent absorption peak strongly resemble the unoccupied 5dd density of states calculated using density functional theory, an occurrence we ascribe to transitions between weakly-dispersing 4ff and strongly dispersing 5dd states. In addition, anomalous resonant scattering is observed at higher incident energy, where no corresponding absorption feature is present. Our results suggest the far-reaching utility of LL-edge RIXS in determining the itinerant-state properties of ff-electron materials.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of αα-RuCl3_3: a progress report

Ru M3_3-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements of RuCl3_3 with 27 meV resolution reveals a spin-orbit exciton without noticeable splitting. We extract values for the spin-orbit coupling constant (λ=154±2λ=154\pm2 meV) and trigonal distortion field energy (∣Δ∣<65\left|Δ\right|<65 meV) which support the jeff=1/2j_{\rm eff}=1/2 nature of RuCl3_3. We demonstrate the feasibility of M-edge RIXS for 4d4d systems, which allows ultra high-resolution RIXS of 4d4d systems until instrumentation for L-edge RIXS improves.

Unified understanding of the valence transition in the rare-earth monochalcogenides under pressure

Valence instability is a key ingredient of the unusual properties of f electron materials, yet a clear understanding is lacking as it involves a complex interplay between f electrons and conduc- tion states. Here we propose a unified picture of pressure-induced valence transition in Sm and Yb monochalcogenides, considered as model system for mixed valent 4f-electron materials. Using high-resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we show that the valence transition is driven by the promotion of a 4f electron specifically into the lowest unoccupied (LU) 5d t2g band. We demonstrate with a promotional model that the nature of the transition at low pressures is intimately related to the density of states of the LU band, while at high pressures it is governed by the hybridization strength. These results set a new standard for the generic understanding of valence fluctuations in f-electron materials.

Disentangling a quantum antiferromagnet with resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

Low-dimensional copper oxide lattices naturally manifest electronic states with strong short range quantum entanglement, which are known to lead to remarkable emergent material properties. However the nanometer scale many-body wavefunction is challenging to measure or manipulate in a simple way. In this study, X-ray induced dddd electronic transitions are used to suppress spin entanglement across a single lattice site in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain compound SrCuO2_2, revealing a class of cuprate magnetic excitations that result from breaking the spin chain. These measurements are the first to employ two closely spaced X-ray resonances of copper (M2_2 and M3_3) as a form of natural 2-slit interferometer to distinguish between different types of electronic transition and resolve how they influence the dynamics of nearby spin-entangled electrons.
