Multiple Target Tracking and Filtering using Bayesian Diabatic Quantum Annealing

In this paper, we present a hybrid quantum/classical algorithm to solve an NP-hard combinatorial problem called the multiple target data association (MTDA) and tracking problem. We use diabatic quantum annealing (DQA) to enumerate the low energy, or high probability, feasible assignments, and we use a classical computer to find the Bayesian expected mean track estimate by summing over these assignments. We demonstrate our hybrid quantum/classical approach on a simple example. This may be the first demonstration of a Bayesian hybrid quantum-classical multiple target tracking filter. We contrast our DQA method with the adiabatic quantum computing (AQC) approach to MTDA. We give a theoretical overview of DQA and characterize some of the technical limitations of using quantum annealers in this novel diabatic modality.

On Reals with $Δ^{0}_{2}$-Bounded Complexity and Compressive Power

The (prefix-free) Kolmogorov complexity of a finite binary string is the length of the shortest description of the string. This gives rise to some `standard' lowness notions for reals: A is K-trivial if its initial segments have the lowest possible complexity and A is low for K if using A as an oracle does not decrease the complexity of strings by more than a constant factor. We weaken these notions by requiring the defining inequalities to hold up only up to all $Δ^0_2$ orders, and call the new notions $Δ^0_2$-bounded K-trivial and $Δ^0_2$-bounded low for K. Several of the `nice' properties of K-triviality are lost with this weakening. For instance, the new weaker definitions both give uncountable set of reals. In this paper we show that the weaker definitions are no longer equivalent, and that the $Δ^0_2$-bounded K-trivials are cofinal in the Turing degrees. We then compare them to other previously studied weakenings, namely infinitely-often K-triviality and weak lowness for K (in each, the defining inequality must hold up to a constant, but only for infinitely many inputs). We show that $Δ^0_2$-bounded K-trivial implies infinitely-often K-trivial, but no implication holds between $Δ^0_2$-bounded low for K and weakly low for K.

A Perfect Set of Reals with Finite Self-Information

We examine a definition of the mutual information of two reals proposed by Levin. The mutual information is I(X:Y)=log(sum(2^{K(s)-K^X(s)+K(t)-K^Y(t)-K(s,t)}, (s,t) pairs of finite binary strings), where K is the prefix-free Kolmogorov complexity. A real X is said to have finite self-information if I(X:X) is finite. We give a construction for a perfect Pi^0_1 set of reals with this property, which settles some open questions posed by Hirschfeldt and Weber. The construction produces a perfect set of reals with K(s)<= K^{A}(s)+f(s)+c for a certain constant c and for any given Delta^0_2 f with a particularly nice approximation and for a specific choice of f it can also be used to produce a perfect Pi^0_1 set of reals that are low for effective Hausdorff dimension and effective packing dimension. The construction can be further adapted to produce a single perfect set of reals that satisfy K(s) <= K^A(s)+f(s)+c_f, where c_f is a constant that depends on f, for all f in a `nice' class of Delta^0_2 functions which includes all recursive orders.
