Controlling electron localization of H2+_2^+ by intense plasmon-enhanced laser fields

We present a theoretical study of the wave packet dynamics of the H2+_2^+ molecular ion in plasmon-enhanced laser fields. Such fields may be produced, for instance, when metallic nano-structures are illuminated by a laser pulse of moderated intensity. Their main property is that they vary in space on nanometer scales. We demonstrate that the spatial inhomogeneous character of these plasmonic fields leads to an enhancement of electron localization, an instrumental phenomenon that controls molecular fragmentation. We suggest that the charge-imbalance induced by the surface-plasmon resonance near the metallic nano-structures is the origin of the increase in the electron localization.

High-order harmonic generation from Rydberg atoms driven by plasmonic-enhanced laser fields

We theoretically investigate high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in Rydberg atoms driven by spatially inhomogeneous laser fields, induced, for instance, by plasmonic enhancement. It is well known that the laser intensity should to exceed certain threshold in order to generate HHG, when noble gas atoms in their ground state are used as an active medium. One way to enhance the coherent light coming from a conventional laser oscillator is to take advantage of the amplification obtained by the so-called surface plasmon polaritons, created when a low intensity laser field is focused onto a metallic nanostructure. The main limitation of this scheme is the low damage threshold of the materials employed in the nanostructures engineering. In this work we propose to use Rydberg atoms, driven by spatially inhomogeneous, plasmonic-enhanced laser fields, for HHG. We exhaustively discuss the behaviour and efficiency of these systems in the generation of coherent harmonic emission. To this aim we numerically solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for an atom with an electron initially in a highly excited nn-th Rydberg state, located in the vicinity of a metallic nanostructure, where the electric field changes spatially on the scales relevant for the dynamics of the laser-ionized electron. We first use a one-dimensional model to investigate the phenomena systematically. We then employ a more realistic situation, when the interaction of a plasmonic-enhanced laser field with a three-dimensional Hydrogen atom is modelled. We discuss the scaling of the relevant input parameters with the principal quantum number nn of the Rydberg state in question, and demonstrate that harmonic emission could be achieved from Rydberg atoms well below the damage threshold, thus without deteriorating the geometry and properties of the metallic nanostructure.

Phase-dependent interference fringes in the wavelength scaling of harmonic efficiency

We describe phase-dependent wavelength scaling of high-order harmonic generation efficiency driven by ultra-short laser fields in the mid-infrared. We employ both numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and the Strong Field Approximation to analyze the fine-scale oscillations in the harmonic yield in the context of channel-closing effects. We show, by varying the carrier-envelope phase, that the amplitude of these oscillations depend strongly on the number of returning electron trajectories. Furthermore, the peak positions of the oscillations vary significantly as a function of the carrier-envelope phase. Owing to its practical applications, we also study the wavelength dependence of harmonic yield in the "single-cycle" limit, and observe a smooth variation in the wavelength scaling originating from the vanishing fine-scale oscillations.

High-order harmonic generation from Rydberg states at fixed Keldysh parameter

Because the commonly adopted viewpoint that the Keldysh parameter γγ determines the dynamical regime in strong field physics has long been demonstrated to be misleading, one can ask what happens as relevant physical parameters, such as laser intensity and frequency, are varied while γγ is kept fixed. We present results from our one- and fully three-dimensional quantum simulations of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from various bound states of hydrogen with nn up to 40, where the laser intensities and the frequencies are scaled from those for n=1n=1 in order to maintain a fixed Keldysh parameter γγ<1< 1 for all nn. We find that as we increase nn while keeping γγ fixed, the position of the cut-off scales in well defined manner. Moreover, a secondary plateau forms with a new cut-off, splitting the HHG plateau into two regions. First of these sub-plateaus is composed of lower harmonics, and has a higher yield than the second one. The latter extends up to the semiclassical Ip+3.17UpI_p+3.17U_p cut-off. We find that this structure is universal, and the HHG spectra look the same for all n≳10n\gtrsim 10 when plotted as a function of the scaled harmonic order. We investigate the nn-, ll- and momentum distributions to elucidate the physical mechanism leading to this universal structure.
