Helical magnetic order and Fermi surface nesting in non-centrosymmetric ScFeGe

An investigation of the structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and charge transport properties of non-centrosymmetric hexagonal ScFeGe reveals it to be an anisotropic metal with a transition to a weak itinerant incommensurate helimagnetic state below $T_N = 36$ K. Neutron diffraction measurements discovered a temperature and field independent helical wavevector \textbf{\textit{k}} = (0 0 0.193) with magnetic moments of 0.53 $μ_{B}$ per formula unit confined to the {\it ab}-plane. Density functional theory calculations are consistent with these measurements and find several bands that cross the Fermi level along the {\it c}-axis with a nearly degenerate set of flat bands just above the Fermi energy. The anisotropy found in the electrical transport is reflected in the calculated Fermi surface, which consists of several warped flat sheets along the $c$-axis with two regions of significant nesting, one of which has a wavevector that closely matches that found in the neutron diffraction. The electronic structure calculations, along with a strong anomaly in the {\it c}-axis conductivity at $T_N$, signal a Fermi surface driven magnetic transition, similar to that found in spin density wave materials. Magnetic fields applied in the {\it ab}-plane result in a metamagnetic transition with a threshold field of $\approx$ 6.7 T along with a sharp, strongly temperature dependent, discontinuity and a change in sign of the magnetoresistance for in-plane currents. Thus, ScFeGe is an ideal system to investigate the effect of in-plane magnetic fields on an easy-plane magnetic system, where the relative strength of the magnetic interactions and anisotropies determine the topology and magnetic structure.

Complex superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric compound Re$_{6}$Zr

We report the electronic structure, synthesis, and measurements of the magnetic, transport, and thermal properties of the polycrystalline noncentrosymmetric compound Re$_{6}$Zr. We observed a bulk superconducting transition at temperature $T_{c}$ $\sim$ 6.7 K, and measured the resistivity, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and the London penetration depth below the transition, as well as performed doping and pressure studies. From these measurements we extracted the critical field, and the superconducting parameters of Re$_{6}$Zr. Our measurements indicate a relatively weak to moderate contribution from a triplet component to the order parameter, and favor a full superconducting gap, although we cannot exclude the existence of point nodes based on our data.

Control of magnetism in singlet-triplet superconducting heterostructures

We analyze the magnetization at the interface between singlet and triplet superconductors and show that its direction and dependence on the phase difference across the junction are strongly tied to the structure of the triplet order parameter as well as to the pairing interactions. We consider equal spin helical, opposite spin chiral, and mixed symmetry pairing on the triplet side and show that the magnetization vanishes at $ϕ=0$ only in the first case, follows approximately a $\cosϕ$ behavior for the second, and shows higher harmonics for the last configuration. We trace the origin of the magnetization to the magnetic structure of the Andreev bound states near the interface, and provide a symmetry-based explanation of the results. Our findings can be used to control the magnetization in superconducting heterostructures and to test symmetries of spin-triplet superconductors.

Impurity-induced antiferromagnetic order in Pauli-limited nodal superconductors: application to heavy fermion CeCoIn5

We investigate the properties of the coexistence phase of itinerant antiferromagnetism and nodal $d$-wave superconductivity (Q-phase) discovered in heavy fermion CeCoIn5 under applied magnetic field. We solve the minimal model that includes $d$-wave superconductivity and underlying magnetic correlations in real space to elucidate the structure of the $Q$-phase in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. We further focus on the role of magnetic impurities, and show that they nucleate the Q-phase at lower magnetic fields. Our most crucial finding is that, even at zero applied field, dilute magnetic impurities cooperate via RKKY-like exchange interactions to generate a long-range ordered coexistence state identical to the Q-phase. This result is in agreement with recent neutron scattering measurements [S. Raymond et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 83}, 013707 (2014)].

Tunable unconventional Kondo effect on topological insulator surfaces

We study Kondo physics of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ impurity in electronic matter with strong spin-orbit interaction, which can be realized by depositing magnetic adatoms on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. We show that magnetic properties of topological surface states and the very existence of Kondo screening strongly depend on details of the bulk material, and specifics of surface preparation encoded in time-reversal preserving boundary conditions for electronic wavefunctions. When this tunable Kondo effect occurs, the impurity spin is screened by purely orbital motion of surface electrons. This mechanism gives rise to a transverse magnetic response of the surface metal, and spin textures that can be used to experimentally probe signatures of a Kondo resonance. Our predictions are particularly relevant for STM measurements in ${\rm Pb Te}$-class crystalline topological insulators, but we also discuss implications for other classes of topological materials.

Ferromagnetic Quantum Critical Point in FeGa3 Tuned by Mixed-Valence Fe Dimers

The magnetic, transport, and thermal properties of single crystals of the series Fe(Ga1-xGex)3 are reported. Pure FeGa3 is a nonmagnetic semiconductor, that when doped with small concentrations of Ge (extrinsic electrons), passes through an insulator-to-metal transition and displays non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior. Moreover, we observer clear signatures of a ferromagnetic quantum critical point (FM-QCP) in this system at x = 0.052. The mechanism of the local moment formation is consistent with a one-electron reduction of Fe dimer singlets, a unique structural feature in FeGa3, where the density of these mixed valence (Fe(III)-Fe(II)) dimers provides a unique tuning parameter of quantum criticality.

Field-angle-resolved anisotropy in superconducting CeCoIn5 using realistic Fermi surfaces

We compute the field-angle-resolved specific heat and thermal conductivity using realistic model band structure for the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 to identify the gap structure and location of nodes. We use a two-band tight-binding parametrization of the band dispersion as input for the self-consistent calculations in the quasiclassical formulation of the superconductivity. Systematic analysis shows that modest in-plane anisotropy in the density of states and Fermi velocity in tetragonal crystals significantly affects the fourfold oscillations in thermal quantities, when the magnetic field is rotated in the basal plane. The Fermi surface anisotropy substantially shifts the location of the lines in the H-T plane, where the oscillations change sign compared to quasicylindrical model calculations. In particular, at high fields, the anisotropy and sign reversal are found even for isotropic gaps. Our findings imply that a simultaneous analysis of the specific heat and thermal conductivity, with an emphasis on the low energy sector, is needed to restrict potential pairing scenarios in multiband superconductors. We discuss the impact of our results on recent measurements of the Ce-115 family, namely CeTIn5 with T=Co,Rh,Ir.

Heavy antiferromagnetic phases in Kondo lattices

We propose a microscopic physical mechanism that stabilizes coexistence of the Kondo effect and antiferromagnetism in heavy-fermion systems. We consider a two-dimensional quantum Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model and show that long-range electron hopping leads to a robust antiferromagnetic Kondo state. By using a modified slave-boson mean-field approach we analyze the stability of the heavy antiferromagnetic phase across a range or parameters, and discuss transitions between different phases. We also address connection to experiments on heavy fermion compounds.

Inhomogeneous Superconducting States of Mesoscopic Thin-Walled Cylinders in External Magnetic Fields

We theoretically investigate the appearance of spatially modulated superconducting states in mesoscopic superconducting thin-wall cylinders in a magnetic field at low temperatures. Quantization of the electron motion around the circumference of the cylinder leads to a discontinuous evolution of the spatial modulation of the superconducting order parameter along the transition line T_c(H). We show that this discontinuity leads to the non-monotonic behavior of the specific heat jump at the onset of superconductivity as a function of temperature and field. We argue that this geometry provides an excellent opportunity to directly and unambiguously detect distinctive signatures of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov modulation of the superconducting order.

Orbital order and Hund's rule frustration in Kondo lattices

We analyze a microscopic origin of the Kondo effect-assisted orbital order in heavy-fermion materials. By studying the periodic two-orbital Anderson model with two local electrons, we show that frustration of Hund's rule coupling due to the Kondo effect leads to an incommensurate spiral orbital and magnetic order, which exists only inside the Kondo screened (heavy-electron) phase. This spiral state can be observed in neutron and resonant X-ray scattering measurements in ${\rm U}$- and ${\rm Pr}$-based heavy-fermion compounds, and realized in cold atomic gases, e.g. fermionic ${}^{173}{\rm Yb}$.

Impurity states in multiband s-wave superconductors: analysis of iron pnictides

We examine the effect of a single, non-magnetic impurity in a multiband, extended s-wave superconductor allowing for anisotropy of the gaps on the Fermi surfaces. We derive analytic expressions for the Green's functions in the continuum and analyse the conditions for the existence of sharp impurity-induced resonant states. Underlying band structure is more relevant for the multiband than for single band case, and mismatch between the bands generically makes the formation of the impurity states less likely in the physical regime of parameters. We confirm these conclusions by numerically solving the impurity problem in a tight-binding parameterization of the bands relevant to pnictide superconductors.

Kondo effect in the presence of spin-orbit coupling

We study the T=0 Kondo physics of a spin-1/2 impurity in a non-centrosymmetric metal with spin-orbit interaction. Within a simple variational approach we compute ground state properties of the system for an {\it arbitrary} form of spin-orbit coupling consistent with the crystal symmetry. This coupling produces an unscreened impurity magnetic moment and can lead to a significant change of the Kondo energy. We discuss implications of this finding both for dilute impurities and for heavy-fermion materials without inversion symmetry.

Physical Properties of $Ba_2 Mn_2 Sb_2 O$ Single Crystals

We report both experimental and theoretical investigations of the physical properties of Ba$_\mathrm{2}$Mn$_\mathrm{2}$Sb$_\mathrm{2}$O single crystals. This material exhibits a hexagonal structure with lattice constants: a = 4.7029(15) Å and c = 19.9401(27) Å, as obtained from powder X-ray diffraction measurements, and in agreement with structural optimization through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat show anomalies at T$_\mathrm{N}$ = 60 K, consistent with antiferromagnetic ordering. However, the magnitude of T$_\mathrm{N}$ is significantly smaller than the Curie-Weiss temperature ($\mid$$\mathrm{Θ_{CW}}$$\mid$ $\approx$ 560 K), suggesting a magnetic system of reduced dimensionality. The temperature dependence of both the in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity changes from an activated at $T$ $>$ T$_\mathrm{x}$ $\sim$ 200 K to a logarithmic at $T$ $<$ T$_\mathrm{x}$. Correspondingly, the magnetic susceptibility displays a bump at T$_\mathrm{x}$. DFT calculations at the DFT + U level support the experimental observation of an antiferromagnetic ground state.

Structure of magnetic order in Pauli limited unconventional superconductors

We analyse the magnetic structure of the antiferromagnetic order induced in Pauli limited d-wave superconductors by Zeeman coupling to magnetic field. We determine the phase diagram in the H-T plane, and find that the magnetic phase, which is stabilized at low temperatures and just below the upper critical field, can have two realizations depending primarily on the shape of the underlying Fermi surface. The double-Q magnetic ordering may persist over the entire coexistence range. Alternatively, there may exist a weak first order transition from a double-Q structure at lower fields to a single-Q modulation at higher fields. Together with the calculations of the NMR line-shape these results suggest the second scenario as a serious candidate for describing the superconducting state of CeCoIn5.

Antiferromagnetic Order in Pauli Limited Unconventional Superconductors

We develop a theory of the coexistence of superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AFM) in CeCoIn5. We show that in Pauli-limited nodal superconductors the nesting of the quasi-particle pockets induced by Zeeman pair-breaking leads to incommensurate AFM with the moment normal to the field. We compute the phase diagram and find a first order transition to the normal state at low temperatures, absence of normal state AFM, and coexistence of SC and AFM at high fields, in agreement with experiments. We also predict the existence of a new double-Q magnetic phase.

Effect of annealing on the specific heat of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

We report on the effect of annealing on the temperature and field dependencies of the low temperature specific heat of the electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ for under-(x = 0.045), optimal- (x = 0.08) and over-doped (x = 0.105 and 0.14) regimes. We observed that annealing significantly improves some superconducting characteristics in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$. It considerably increases $T_{c}$, decreases $γ_{0}$ in the superconducting state and suppresses the Schottky-like contribution at very low temperatures. The improved sample quality allows for a better identification of the superconducting gap structure of these materials. We examine the effects of doping and annealing within a self-consistent framework for an extended s-wave pairing scenario. At optimal doping our data indicates the sample is fully gapped, while for both under and overdoped samples significant low-energy excitations possibly consistent with a nodal structure remain. The difference of sample quality offers a natural explanation for the variation in low temperature power laws observed by many techniques.

Nodal gap structure of BaFe_2(As_{1-x}P_x)_2 from angle-resolved thermal conductivity in a magnetic field

The structure of the superconducting order parameter in the iron-pnictide superconductor BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.67}$P$_{0.33}$)$_2$ ($T_c=31$\,K) with line nodes is studied by the angle-resolved thermal conductivity measurements in a magnetic field rotated within the basal plane. We find that the thermal conductivity displays distinct fourfold oscillations with minima when the field is directed at $\pm45^\circ$ with respect to the tetragonal a-axis. We discuss possible gap structures that can account for the data, and conclude that the observed results are most consistent with the closed nodal loops located at the flat parts of the electron Fermi surface with high Fermi velocity.

Theory of quasiparticle vortex bound states in Fe-based superconductors: application to LiFeAs

Spectroscopy of vortex bound states can provide valuable information on the structure of the superconducting order parameter. Quasiparticle wavefunctions are expected to leak out in the directions of gap minima or nodes, if they exist, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) on these low-energy states should probe the momentum dependence of the gap. Anisotropy can also arise from band structure effects, however. We perform a quasiclassical calculation of the density of states of a single vortex in an anisotropic superconductor, and show that if the gap itself is not highly anisotropic, the Fermi surface anisotropy dominates, preventing direct observation of superconducting gap features. This serves as a cautionary message for the analysis of STS data on the vortex state on Fe-based superconductors, in particular LiFeAs, which we treat explicitly.

Volovik effect in a highly anisotropic multiband superconductor: experiment and theory

We present measurements of the specific heat coefficient γ(= C/T) in the low temperature limit as a function of an applied magnetic field for the Fe-based superconductor BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_2$. We find both a linear regime at higher fields and a limiting square root $H$ behavior at very low fields. The crossover from a Volovik-like $\sqrt{H}$ to a linear field dependence can be understood from a multiband calculation in the quasiclassical approximation assuming gaps with different momentum dependence on the hole- and electron-like Fermi surface sheets.

Calorimetric Evidence for Nodes in the Overdoped Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We present low-temperature specific heat of the electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, which does not show any indication of an upturn down to 400 mK, the lowest measuring temperature. The lack of a Schottky-like feature at low temperatures or in magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla enables us to identify enhanced low-temperature quasiparticle excitations and to study anisotropy in the linear term of the specific heat. Our results can not be explained by a single or multiple isotropic superconducting gap, but are consistent with multi-gap superconductivity with nodes on at least one Fermi surface sheet.

Fermi surface evolution through a heavy fermion superconductor-to-antiferromagnet transition: de Haas-van Alphen effect in Cd-substituted CeCoIn$_5$

We report the results of de-Haas-van-Alphen (dHvA) measurements in Cd doped CeCoIn$_5$ and LaCoIn$_5$. Cd doping is known to induce an antiferromagnetic order in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$, whose effect can be reversed with applied pressure. We find a slight but systematic change of the dHvA frequencies with Cd doping in both compounds, reflecting the chemical potential shift due to the addition of holes. The frequencies and effective masses are close to those found in the nominally pure compounds with similar changes apparent in the Ce and La compounds with Cd substitution. We observe no abrupt changes to the Fermi surface in the high field paramagnetic state for $x \sim x_c$ corresponding to the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering at H=0 in CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$)$_5$. Our results rule out $f-$electron localization as the mechanism for the tuning of the ground state in CeCoIn$_5$ with Cd doping.

Nodes vs. minima in the energy gap of iron-pnictides from field-induced anisotropy

We develop the formalism for computing the oscillations of the specific heat and thermal transport under rotated magnetic field in multiband superconductors with anisotropic gap and apply it to iron-pnictides. We show that these oscillations change sign at low temperatures and fields, which strongly influences the conclusions about the gap structure based on experiment. We find that recent measurements of the specific heat oscillations indicate that the iron-based superconductors possess an anisotropic gap with deep minima or nodes close to the line connecting electron and hole pockets. We make predictions for the behavior of the thermal conductivity that will help distinguish between these cases.

Structure and physical properties of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo3Al2C

We have synthesized polycrystalline samples of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo3Al2C by arc and RF melting, measured its transport, magnetic and thermodynamic properties, and computed its band structure. Experimental results indicate a bulk superconducting transition at Tc ~ 9.2 K, while the density of states at the Fermi surface is found to be dominated by Mo d-orbitals. Using the measured values for the lower critical field Hc1, upper critical field Hc2, and the specific heat C, we estimated the thermodynamic critical field Hc(0), coherence length ξ(0), penetration depth λ(0), and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ(0). The specific heat jump at Tc, ΔC/γTc = 2.14, suggests that Mo3Al2C is moderately-to-strongly coupled, consistent with the fast opening of the gap, as evidenced by the rapid release of entropy below Tc from our electronic specific heat measurements. Above 2K the electronic specific heat exhibits the power law behavior, suggesting that synthesis of single crystals and measurements at lower temperature are needed to establish whether the gap is anisotropic. The estimated value of the upper critical field Hc2(0) is close to the calculated Pauli limit, therefore further studies are needed to determine whether the absence of an inversion center results in a significant admixture of the triplet component of the order parameter.

Vortex state in d-wave superconductors with strong paramagnetism: transport and specific heat anisotropy

We analyse the combined effect of orbital and Pauli depairing on the superconducting state, and apply the results to the heavy fermion CeCoIn$_5$. We find that: a) standard extrapolation based on the slope of $H_{c2}(T)$ in the vicinity of the transition temperature to T=0 does not always give accurate values of the orbital upper critical field; b) critical value of the Maki parameter, $α$, that determines onset of the first order transition depends on the Fermi surface shape and the symmetry of the gap, and is $α^*\approx 3$ for CeCoIn$_5$; c) the anisotropy of the thermodynamic and transport coefficients in the low-temperature, low-field part of the phase diagram is essentially insensitive to the Zeeman field and can be used to determine the nodal directions in Pauli-limited superconductors. The latter result confirms the finding of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ order parameter CeCoIn$_5$.

Theory of thermal conductivity in extended-$s$ state superconductors: application to ferropnictides

Within a two-band model for the recently discovered ferropnictide materials, we calculate the thermal conductivity assuming general superconducting states of $A_{1g}$ ("s-wave") symmetry, considering both currently popular isotropic "sign-changing" $s$ states and states with strong anisotropy, including those which manifest nodes or deep minima of the order parameter. We consider both intra- and interband disorder scattering effects, and show that in situations where a low-temperature linear-$T$ exists in the thermal conductivity, it is not always "universal" as in d-wave superconductors. We discuss the conditions under which such a term can disappear, as well as how it can be induced by a magnetic field. We compare our results to several recent experiments.

Interplane and intraplane heat transport in quasi two-dimensional nodal superconductors

We analyze the behavior of the thermal conductivity in quasi-two dimensional superconductors with line nodes. Motivated by measurements of the anisotropy between the interplane and intraplane thermal transport in CeIrIn_5 we show that a simple model of the open Fermi surface with vertical line nodes is insufficient to describe the data. We propose two possible extensions of the model taking into account a) additional modulation of the gap along the axial direction of the open Fermi surface; and b) dependence of the interplane tunneling on the direction of the in-plane momentum. We discuss the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity anisotropy and its low T limit in these two models and compare the results with a model with a horizontal line of nodes (``hybrid gap''). We discuss possible relevance of each model for the symmetry of the order parameter in CeIrIn_5, and suggest further experiments aimed at clarifying the shape of the superconducting gap.

Superconducting gap nodes in PrOs_4Sb_12

We examine the superconducting gap nodes in crystals with tetrahedral (T_h) symmetry. The (0,0,1) phase of the three dimensional order parameter in the triplet channel has nodes in the [001] directions. Following a second order phase transition to the state (0,i|eta_2|,|eta_1|), each node lifts away from the Fermi surface and splits into two deep dips. We discuss this scenario in the context of multiple superconducting phases in PrOs4Sb12.

Avoided Antiferromagnetic Order and Quantum Critical Point in CeCoIn$_5$

We measured specific heat and resistivity of heavy fermion CeCoIn5 between the superconducting critical field $H_{c2} = 5 T$ and 9 T, with field in the [001] direction, and at temperatures down to 50mK. At 5T the data show Non Fermi Liquid behavior down to the lowest temperatures. At field above 8T the data exhibit crossover from the Fermi liquid to a Non Fermi Liquid behavior. We analyzed the scaling properties of the specific heat, and compared both resistivity and the specific heat with the predictions of a spin-fluctuation theory. Our analysis leads us to suggest that the NFL behavior is due to incipient antiferromagnetism (AF) in CeCoIn5, with the quantum critical point in the vicinity of the $H_{c2}$. Below $H_{c2}$ the AF phase which competes with the paramagnetic ground state is superseded by the superconducting transition.

Tail states in superconductors with weak magnetic impurities

We analyse the behavior of the density of states in a singlet s-wave superconductor with weak magnetic impurities in the clean limit by using the method of optimal fluctuation. We show that the density of states varies as $\ln N(E)\propto -|E-Δ_0|^{(7-d)/4}$ near the mean field gap edge $Δ_0$ in a d-dimensional superconductor. The optimal fluctuation in d>1 is strongly anisotropic. We compare the density of states with that obtained in other recent approaches.

Thermal conductivity in the vortex state of d-wave superconductors

We present the results of a microscopic calculation of the longitudinal thermal conductivity of quasiparticles, $κ_{xx}$, in a 2D d-wave superconductor in the vortex state. Our approach takes into account both impurity scattering and a contribution to the thermal transport lifetime due to the scattering of quasiparticles off of vortices. We compare the results with the experimental measurements on high-T$_c$ cuprates and organic superconductors.
