Deconfinement transition line with the Complex Langevin equation up to $μ/T \sim 5$

We study the deconfinement transition line in QCD for quark chemical potentials up to $μ_q \sim 5 T$ ($μ_B \sim 15 T$). To circumvent the sign problem we use the complex Langevin equation with gauge cooling. The plaquette gauge action is used with two flavors of naive Wilson fermions at a relatively heavy pion mass of roughly 1.3 GeV. A quadratic dependence describes the transition line well on the whole chemical potential range.

Controlling Complex Langevin simulations of lattice models by boundary term analysis

One reason for the well known fact that the Complex Langevin (CL) method sometimes fails to converge or converges to the wrong limit has been identified long ago: it is insufficient decay of the probability density either near infinity or near poles of the drift, leading to boundary terms that spoil the formal argument for correctness. To gain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon, in a previous paper we have studied the emergence of such boundary terms thoroughly in a simple model, where analytic results can be compared with numerics. Here we continue this type of analysis for more physically interesting models, focusing on the boundaries at infinity. We start with abelian and non-abelian one-plaquette models, then we proceed to a Polyakov chain model and finally to high density QCD (HDQCD) and the 3D XY model. We show that the direct estimation of the systematic error of the CL method using boundary terms is in principle possible.

On complex Langevin dynamics and zeroes of the measure II: Fermionic determinant

Lattice QCD at non-vanishing chemical potential is studied using the complex Langevin equation (CLE). One of the conditions for the correctness of the results of the CLE is that the zeroes of the measure coming from the fermionic determinant are outside of the distribution of the configurations, or at least in a region where support for the distribution is very much suppressed. We investigate this issue for Heavy Dense QCD (HDQCD) and full QCD at high temperatures. In HDQCD it is found that the configurations move closest to the zeroes of the measure around the critical chemical potential of the onset transition, where the sign problem is diminished, but results remain largely unaffected. In full QCD at high temperatures the investigation of the spectrum of the Dirac operator yields a similar observation: the results are unaffected by the issue of the poles.

Hopping parameter expansion to all orders using the complex Langevin equation

We propose two novel formulations of the hopping parameter expansion for finite density QCD using Wilson fermions, while keeping the gauge action intact. We use the complex Langevin equation to circumvent the sign problem in the theory. We perform simulations at very high order of the expansion, such that convergence is directly observable. We compare results to the full QCD results, and see agreement at sufficiently high orders. These results provide support for the use of complex Langevin dynamics to study QCD at nonzero density, both in the full and the expanded theory, and for the convergence of the latter.

Properties of hadron screening masses at small baryonic density

The properties of hadron screening masses around the deconfinement phase transition at finite baryonic density can be studied by evaluating the Taylor coefficients with respect to the iso-scalar and iso-vector chemical potentials. We simulate 2-flavour lattice QCD with staggered fermions on a 12*12*24*6 lattice with ma = 0.05 and 0.10 and report investigations of nucleon, pseudo-scalar and vector mesons. We present new, strong evidence that in the confining phase, the screening masses at vanishing chemical potential have significant temperature dependence, but the effect of the iso-scalar chemical potential is very small. Above the critical temperature, the second derivative terms of mesons rapidly increase as contrasted to the case of baryon. We also study the responses of the screening masses to an iso-vector chemical potential and discuss some of the issues related to the properties of hadron masses at finite density.

Renormalization group flow of SU(3) lattice gauge theory - Numerical studies in a two coupling space

We investigate the renormalization group (RG) flow of SU(3) lattice gauge theory in a two coupling space with couplings $β_{11}$ and $β_{12}$ corresponding to $1\times 1$ and $1\times 2$ loops respectively. Extensive numerical calculations of the RG flow are made in the fourth quadrant of this coupling space, i.e., $β_{11}>0$ and $β_{12}<0$. Swendsen's factor two blocking and the Schwinger-Dyson method are used to find an effective action for the blocked gauge field. The resulting renormalization group flow runs quickly towards an attractive stream which has an approximate line shape. This is numerical evidence of a renormalized trajectory which locates close to the two coupling space. A model flow equation which incorporates a marginal coupling (asymptotic scaling term), an irrelevant coupling and a non-perturbative attraction towards the strong coupling limit reproduces qualitatively the observed features. We further examine the scaling properties of an action which is closer to the attractive stream than the currently used improved actions. It is found that this action shows excellent restoration of rotational symmetry even for coarse lattices with $a \sim 0.3$ fm.

Screening mass responses to the chemical potential at finite temperature

Responses to chemical potential of the pseudoscalar meson screening mass and the chiral condensate in lattice QCD are investigated. On a $16 \times 8^2 \times \4$ lattice with two flavors of staggered quarks the first and second responses below and above $T_c$ are evaluated. Different behavior in the low and the high temperature phases are observed, which may be explained as a consequence of the chiral symmetry breaking and restoration.

Cooling, Physical Scales and the Vacuum Structure of Y-M Theories

We present a cooling method controlled by a physical cooling radius that defines a scale below which fluctuations are smoothed out while leaving physics unchanged at all larger scales. This method can be generally used as a gauge invariant low pass filter to extract the physics from noisy MC configurations. Here we apply this method to study topological properties of lattice gauge theories where it allows to retain instanton--anti-instanton pairs.

Topology of full QCD

We study topological properties of SU(3) gauge theory using improved cooling. In the absence of fermions, we measure a topological susceptibility of $(182(8) MeV)^4$ and an instanton size $\sim 0.6$ fm. In the presence of light staggered fermions and across the chiral transition, the susceptibility drops in a manner consistent with the quenched case, and the instanton size changes little. No significant formation of bound instanton-antiinstanton pairs is observed, in particular not along the Euclidean time direction for $T > T_c$.
