Dimensional reduction and the phase diagram of 5d Yang-Mills theory

We present a non-perturbative study of the phase diagram of 5d SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with one compact extra dimension on the lattice. Assuming at least a modest scale separation between the cutoff and the compactification scales leads to an exponential separation between the compactification scale and the four-dimensional correlation length. While we demonstrate that it is not possible to take a full five-dimensional continuum limit, this dynamical generation of scale hierarchy opens up the possibility for us to make limited, but non-perturbative, predictions about continuum theories whose low-energy sector is described by an effective 5d Yang-Mills theory.

Revisiting strong coupling QCD at finite temperature and baryon density

The strong coupling limit ($β_{gauge}=0$) of lattice QCD with staggered fermions enjoys the same non-perturbative properties as continuum QCD, namely confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. In contrast to the situation at weak coupling, the sign problem which appears at finite density can be brought under control for a determination of the full (mu,T) phase diagram by Monte Carlo simulations. Further difficulties with efficiency and ergodicity of the simulations, especially at the strongly first-order, low-T, finite-mu transition, are addressed respectively with a worm algorithm and multicanonical sampling. Our simulations reveal sizeable corrections to the old results of Karsch and Muetter. Comparison with analytic mean-field determinations of the phase diagram shows discrepancies of O(10) in the location of the QCD critical point.

Properties of hadron screening masses at small baryonic density

The properties of hadron screening masses around the deconfinement phase transition at finite baryonic density can be studied by evaluating the Taylor coefficients with respect to the iso-scalar and iso-vector chemical potentials. We simulate 2-flavour lattice QCD with staggered fermions on a 12*12*24*6 lattice with ma = 0.05 and 0.10 and report investigations of nucleon, pseudo-scalar and vector mesons. We present new, strong evidence that in the confining phase, the screening masses at vanishing chemical potential have significant temperature dependence, but the effect of the iso-scalar chemical potential is very small. Above the critical temperature, the second derivative terms of mesons rapidly increase as contrasted to the case of baryon. We also study the responses of the screening masses to an iso-vector chemical potential and discuss some of the issues related to the properties of hadron masses at finite density.

The baryon static potential from lattice QCD

Lattice QCD simulations offer the possibility of determining the potential between three static quarks from first principles. We review the status of such simulations, and the relative standing of the two theoretical proposals for the baryonic potential: the Delta law (sum of two-body terms) and the Y law (length of three flux strings joined together at a junction). We also present new results on the leading Luscher-like corrections to the asymptotic linear potential.

The scaling dimension of low lying Dirac eigenmodes and of the topological charge density

As a quantitative measure of localization, the inverse participation ratio of low lying Dirac eigenmodes and topological charge density is calculated on quenched lattices over a wide range of lattice spacings and volumes. Since different topological objects (instantons, vortices, monopoles, and artifacts) have different co-dimension, scaling analysis provides information on the amount of each present and their correlation with the localization of low lying eigenmodes.

Quenched charmonium spectrum

We study charmonium using the standard relativistic formalism in the quenched approximation, on a set of lattices with isotropic lattice spacings ranging from 0.1 to 0.04 fm. We concentrate on the calculation of the hyperfine splitting between eta_c and J/psi, aiming for a controlled continuum extrapolation of this quantity. The splitting extracted from the non-perturbatively improved clover Dirac operator shows very little dependence on the lattice spacing for $a \leq 0.1$ fm. The dependence is much stronger for Wilson and tree-level improved clover operators, but they still yield consistent extrapolations if sufficiently fine lattices, $a \leq 0.07$ fm ($a M(η_c) \leq 1$), are used. Our result for the hyperfine splitting is 77(2)(6) MeV (where Sommer's parameter, r_0, is used to fix the scale). This value remains about 30% below experiment. Dynamical fermions and OZI-forbidden diagrams both contribute to the remainder. Results for the eta_c and J/psi wave functions are also presented.

Renormalization group flow of SU(3) lattice gauge theory - Numerical studies in a two coupling space

We investigate the renormalization group (RG) flow of SU(3) lattice gauge theory in a two coupling space with couplings $β_{11}$ and $β_{12}$ corresponding to $1\times 1$ and $1\times 2$ loops respectively. Extensive numerical calculations of the RG flow are made in the fourth quadrant of this coupling space, i.e., $β_{11}>0$ and $β_{12}<0$. Swendsen's factor two blocking and the Schwinger-Dyson method are used to find an effective action for the blocked gauge field. The resulting renormalization group flow runs quickly towards an attractive stream which has an approximate line shape. This is numerical evidence of a renormalized trajectory which locates close to the two coupling space. A model flow equation which incorporates a marginal coupling (asymptotic scaling term), an irrelevant coupling and a non-perturbative attraction towards the strong coupling limit reproduces qualitatively the observed features. We further examine the scaling properties of an action which is closer to the attractive stream than the currently used improved actions. It is found that this action shows excellent restoration of rotational symmetry even for coarse lattices with $a \sim 0.3$ fm.

The QCD phase diagram for small densities from imaginary chemical potential

We present results on the QCD phase diagram for mu_B <= pi T. Our simulations are performed with an imaginary chemical potential mu_I for which the fermion determinant is positive. On an 8^3 x 4 lattice with 2 flavors of staggered quarks, we map out the phase diagram and identify the pseudo-critical temperature T_c(mu_I). For mu_I/T <= pi/3, this is an analytic function, whose Taylor expansion is found to converge rapidly, with truncation errors far smaller than statistical ones. The truncated series may then be continued to real mu, yielding the corresponding phase diagram for mu_B <~ 500 MeV. This approach provides control over systematics and avoids reweighting. We compare it with other recent work.

Screening mass responses to the chemical potential at finite temperature

Responses to chemical potential of the pseudoscalar meson screening mass and the chiral condensate in lattice QCD are investigated. On a $16 \times 8^2 \times \4$ lattice with two flavors of staggered quarks the first and second responses below and above $T_c$ are evaluated. Different behavior in the low and the high temperature phases are observed, which may be explained as a consequence of the chiral symmetry breaking and restoration.

Static three- and four-quark potentials

We present results for the static three- and four-quark potentials in SU(3) and SU(4) respectively. Using a variational approach, combined with multi-hit for the time-like links, we determine the ground state of the baryonic string with sufficient accuracy to test the $Y-$ and $Δ-$ ansätze for the baryonic Wilson area law. Our results favor the $Δ$ ansatz, where the potential is the sum of two-body terms.

The Static Baryon Potential

Using state of the art lattice techniques we investigate the static baryon potential. We employ the multi-hit procedure for the time links and a variational approach to determine the ground state with sufficient accuracy that, for distances up to $\sim 1.2$ fm, we can distinguish the $Y$- and $Δ$- Ansätze for the baryonic Wilson area law. Our analysis shows that the $Δ$-Ansatz is favoured. This result is also supported by the gauge-invariant nucleon wave function which we measure for the first time.

Adjoint string breaking in 4d SU(2) Yang-Mills theory

We compute the static potential of adjoint sources in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions by numerical Monte Carlo simulations. Following a recent calculation in 2+1 dimensions, we employ a variational approach involving string and gluelump operators and obtain clear evidence for string breaking and the saturation of the potential at large distances. For the string breaking scale we find $r_b \approx 1.25{\rm fm}, 2.3 r_0$, or in units of the lightest glueball, $r_b m_{0++} \approx 9.7$. We furthermore resolve the first excitation of the flux-tube and observe its breaking as well. The result for $r_b$ is in remarkable quantitative agreement with the three-dimensional one.

Truncation Effects in Monte Carlo Renormalization Group Improved Lattice Actions

We study truncation effects in the SU(3) gauge actions obtained by the Monte Carlo renormalization group method. By measuring the heavy quark potential we find that the truncation effects in the actions coarsen the lattice by 40-50 % from the original blocked lattice. On the other hand, we find that rotational symmetry of the heavy quark potentials is well recovered on such coarse lattices, which may indicate that rotational symmetry breaking terms are easily cancelled out by adding a short distance operator. We also discuss the possibility of reducing truncation effects.

Topology of full QCD

We study topological properties of SU(3) gauge theory using improved cooling. In the absence of fermions, we measure a topological susceptibility of $(182(8) MeV)^4$ and an instanton size $\sim 0.6$ fm. In the presence of light staggered fermions and across the chiral transition, the susceptibility drops in a manner consistent with the quenched case, and the instanton size changes little. No significant formation of bound instanton-antiinstanton pairs is observed, in particular not along the Euclidean time direction for $T > T_c$.

Chern-Simons number diffusion in (1+1)-dimensional Higgs theory

We study the Chern-Simons number diffusion rate in the (1+1)-dimensional latticeAbelian Higgs model at temperatures much higher than, as well as comparable to, the sphaleron energy. It is found that in the high-temperature limit the rate is likely to grow as power 2/3 of the temperature. In the intermediate-temperature regime, our numerical simulations show that very weak temperature dependence of the rate, found in previous work, persists at smaller lattice spacings. We discuss possibilities of relating the observed behavior of the rate to static finite-temperature properties of the model.
