Discovery of Light-induced Metastable Martensitic Anomaly Controlled by Single-Cycle Terahertz Pulses

We report on an ultrafast photoinduced phase transition with a strikingly long-lived Martensitic anomaly driven by above-threshold single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses in Nb$_3$Sn. A non-thermal, THz-induced depletion of low frequency conductivity indicates increased gap splitting of high energy $Γ_{12}$ bands by removal of their degeneracies which enhances the Martensitic phase. In contrast, optical pumping leads to a $Γ_{12}$ gap melting. Such light-induced non-equilibrium Martensitic instability persists up to a critical temperature $\sim$100 K, i.e., more than twice the equilibrium temperature, and can be stabilized beyond technologically-relevant, nanosecond timescales. Together with first-principle simulations, we identify a compelling THz tuning of structural fluctuations via E$_u$ phonons to achieve a non-equilibrium ordering at high temperatures far exceeding those for equilibrium states.

Light Quantum Control of Persisting Higgs Modes in Iron-Based Superconductors

The Higgs mechanism, i.e., spontaneous symmetry breaking of the quantum vacuum, is a cross-disciplinary principle, universal for understanding dark energy, antimatter and quantum materials, from superconductivity to magnetism. Yet, Higgs modes in one-band superconductors (SCs) are currently under debate due to their competition with charge-density fluctuations. A distinct Higgs mode, controllable by terahertz (THz) laser pulses, can arise in multi-band, unconventional SCs via strong {\em interband} Coulomb interaction, but is yet to be accessed. Here we both discover and demonstrate quantum control of such collective mode in iron-based high-temperature superconductors. Using two-pulse, phase coherent THz spectroscopy, we observe a tunable and coherent 2$Δ_{\mathrm{SC}}$ amplitude oscillation of the complex order parameter in such SC with coupled lower and upper bands. The nonlinear dependence of the amplitude mode oscillations on the THz driving fields is distinct from any one-band and conventional SC results: we observe a large nonlinear change of resonance strength, yet with a persisting mode frequency. We argue that this result provides compelling evidence for a transient coupling between the electron and hole amplitude modes via strong interband coherent interaction. To support this scenario, we perform quantum kinetic modeling of a hybrid Higgs mechanism without invoking extra disorder or phonons. In addition to distinguishing between collective modes and charge fluctuations, the light quantum control of multiband SCs can be extended to probe and manipulate many-body entanglement and hidden symmetries in different quantum materials.

Light-wave Control of Non-equilibrium Correlated States using Quantum Femtosecond Magnetism and Time-Periodic Modulation of Coherent Transport

Lightwave quantum electronics utilizes the oscillating carrier wave of intense laser fields to control quantum materials properties. Using quantum kinetic equations of motion, we describe lightwave-driven nonlinear quantum transport of electronic spin and charge with simultaneous quantum fluctuations of non-collinear local spins. During cycles of field oscillations, spin-charge inter-atomic quantum excitations trigger non-adiabatic time evolution of an antiferromagnetic insulator state into a metallic non-equilibrium state with transient magnetization. Lightwave modulation of electronic hopping changes the energy landscape and establishes a non-thermal pathway to laser-induced transitions in correlated systems with strong local magnetic exchange interactions.

Discovery of Terahertz Second Harmonic Generation from Lightwave Acceleration of Symmetry--Breaking Nonlinear Supercurrents

We report terahertz (THz) second harmonic generation (SHG) in superconductors (SC) with inversion symmetric equilibrium states that forbid even-order nonlinearities. Such SHG signal is observed in single-pulse emission by periodic driving with a multi-cycle THz electric field tuned below the SC energy gap and vanishes above the SC critical temperature. We explain the microscopic physics by a dynamical symmetry breaking principle at sub-THz-cycle by using quantum kinetic modeling of the interplay between strong THz-lightwave nonlinearity and pulse propagation. The resulting non-zero integrated pulse area inside the SC drives lightwave nonlinear supercurrents due to sub--cycle Cooper pair acceleration, in contrast to d.c.-biased superconductors, which can be controlled by the bandstructure and the THz pump field.

Light-Driven Raman Coherence as a Non-Thermal Route to Ultrafast Topology Switching

A grand challenge underlies the entire field of topology-enabled quantum logic and information science: how to establish topological control principles driven by quantum coherence and understand the time-dependence of such periodic driving? Here we demonstrate a THz pulse-induced phase transition in Dirac materials that is periodically driven by vibrational coherence due to excitation of the lowest Raman-active mode. Above a critical field threshold, there emerges a long-lived metastable phase with unique Raman coherent phonon-assisted switching dynamics, absent for optical pumping. The switching also manifest itself by non-thermal spectral shape, relaxation slowing down near the Lifshitz transition where the critical Dirac point (DP) occurs, and diminishing signals at the same temperature that the Berry curvature induced Anomalous Hall Effect varnishes. These results, together with first-principles modeling, identify a mode-selective Raman coupling that drives the system from strong to weak topological insulators, STI to WTI, with a Dirac semimetal phase established at a critical atomic displacement controlled by the phonon pumping. Harnessing of vibrational coherence can be extended to steer symmetry-breaking transitions, i.e., Dirac to Weyl ones, with implications on THz topological quantum gate and error correction applications.

Non-thermal separation of electronic and structural orders in a persisting charge density wave

The simultaneous ordering of different degrees of freedom in complex materials undergoing spontaneous symmetry-breaking transitions often involves intricate couplings that have remained elusive in phenomena as wide ranging as stripe formation, unconventional superconductivity or colossal magnetoresistance. Ultrafast optical, x-ray and electron pulses can elucidate the microscopic interplay between these orders by probing the electronic and lattice dynamics separately, but a simultaneous direct observation of multiple orders on the femtosecond scale has been challenging. Here we show that ultrabroadband terahertz pulses can simultaneously trace the ultrafast evolution of coexisting lattice and electronic orders. For the example of a charge-density-wave (CDW) in 1T-TiSe2, we demonstrate that two components of the CDW order parameter - excitonic correlations and a periodic lattice distortion (PLD) - respond very differently to 12-fs optical excitation. Even when the excitonic order of the CDW is quenched, the PLD can persist in a coherently excited state. This observation proves that excitonic correlations are not the sole driving force of the CDW transition in 1T-TiSe2, and exemplifies the sort of profound insight that disentangling strongly coupled components of order parameters in the time domain may provide for the understanding of a broad class of phase transitions.

Manipulating Femtosecond Spin--Orbit Torques with Laser Pulse Sequences to Control Magnetic Memory States and Ringing

Femtosecond (fs) coherent control of collective order parameters is important for non--equilibrium phase dynamics in correlated materials. Here we propose a possible scheme for fs control of a ferromagnetic order parameter based on non--adiabatic optical manipulation of electron--hole ($e$--$h$) photoexcitations between spin--orbit--coupled bands that are exchange--split by magnetic interaction with local spins. We photoexcite fs carrier spin--pulses with controllable direction and time profile without using circularly--polarized light, via time--reversal symmetry--breaking by non--perturbative interplay between spin--orbit and magnetic exchange coupling of coherent photocarriers. We manipulate photoexcited {\em fs spin--orbit torques} to control complex switching pathways of the magnetization between multiple magnetic memory states. We calculate the photoinduced fs magnetic anisotropy in the time domain by using density matrix equations of motion rather than the quasi--equilibrium free energy. By comparing to pump--probe experiments, we identify a "sudden" magnetization canting induced by laser excitation, which displays magnetic hysteresis absent in static magneto--optical measurements and agrees with switchings measured by Hall magnetoresistivity. The fs magnetization canting switches direction with magnetic state and laser frequency, which distinguishes it from nonlinear optical and demagnetization longitudinal effects. By shaping two--color laser--pulse sequences analogous to multi--dimensional Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, we show that sequences of clockwise or counter--clockwise fs spin--orbit torques can enhance or suppress magnetic ringing and switching rotation at any desired time. We propose protocols that can provide controlled access to four magnetic states via consequative 90$^{o}$ switchings.

All-optical four-state magnetization reversal in (Ga,Mn)As ferromagnetic semiconductors

Using density matrix equations of motion and a tight-binding band calculation, we predict all-optical switching between four metastable magnetic states of (III,Mn)As ferromagnets. This switching is initiated non-thermally within 100fs, during nonlinear coherent photoexcitation. For a single optical pulse, magnetization reversal is completed after $\sim$100 ps and controlled by the coherent femtosecond photoexcitation. Our predicted switching comes from magnetic nonlinearities triggered by a femtosecond magnetization tilt that is sensitive to un--adiabatic light--induced spin interactions.

Spin dynamics in nonlinear optical spectroscopy of Fermi sea systems

We discuss the role of many-body spin correlations in nonlinear optical response of a Fermi sea system with a deep impurity level. Due to the Hubbard repulsion between electrons at the impurity, the optical transitions between the impurity level and the Fermi sea states lead to an optically-induced Kondo effect. In particular, the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility logarithmiclly diverges at the absorption threshold. The shape of the pump-probe spectrum is governed by the light-induced Kondo temperature, which can be tuned by varying the intensity and frequency of the pump optical field. In the Kondo limit, corresponding to off-resonant pump excitation, the nonlinear absorption spectrum exhibits a narrow peak below the linear absorption onset.
