A BCI based Smart Home System Combined with Event-related Potentials and Speech Imagery Task

Recently, smart home systems based on brain-computer interface (BCI) has attracted a wide range of interests in both industry and academia. However, the current BCI system has several shortcomings as it produces a comparatively lower accuracy for real-time implementations as well as the intuitive paradigm for the users cannot be well established here. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a highly intuitive BCI paradigm that combines event-related potential (ERP) with the speech-imagery task for the individual target objects. The decoding accuracy of the proposed paradigm was 88.1% (plus or minus 5.90) which is a much significant higher performance than a conventional ERP system. Furthermore, the amplitude of N700 components was significantly enhanced over frontal regions which are priory evoked by the speech-imagery task. Our results could be utilized to develop a smart home system so that it could be more user-friendly and convenient by means of delivering user's intentions both, intuitively and accurately.

End-to-End Automatic Sleep Stage Classification Using Spectral-Temporal Sleep Features

Sleep disorder is one of many neurological diseases that can affect greatly the quality of daily life. It is very burdensome to manually classify the sleep stages to detect sleep disorders. Therefore, the automatic sleep stage classification techniques are needed. However, the previous automatic sleep scoring methods using raw signals are still low classification performance. In this study, we proposed an end-to-end automatic sleep staging framework based on optimal spectral-temporal sleep features using a sleep-edf dataset. The input data were modified using a bandpass filter and then applied to a convolutional neural network model. For five sleep stage classification, the classification performance 85.6% and 91.1% using the raw input data and the proposed input, respectively. This result also shows the highest performance compared to conventional studies using the same dataset. The proposed framework has shown high performance by using optimal features associated with each sleep stage, which may help to find new features in the automatic sleep stage method.

Prediction of Event Related Potential Speller Performance Using Resting-State EEG

Event-related potential (ERP) speller can be utilized in device control and communication for locked-in or severely injured patients. However, problems such as inter-subject performance instability and ERP-illiteracy are still unresolved. Therefore, it is necessary to predict classification performance before performing an ERP speller in order to use it efficiently. In this study, we investigated the correlations with ERP speller performance using a resting-state before an ERP speller. In specific, we used spectral power and functional connectivity according to four brain regions and five frequency bands. As a result, the delta power in the frontal region and functional connectivity in the delta, alpha, gamma bands are significantly correlated with the ERP speller performance. Also, we predicted the ERP speller performance using EEG features in the resting-state. These findings may contribute to investigating the ERP-illiteracy and considering the appropriate alternatives for each user.

Effects of stoichiometric doping in superconducting Bi-O-S compounds

Newly discovered Bi-O-S compounds remain an enigma in attempts to understand their electronic properties. A recent study of Bi$_{4}$O$_{4}$S$_{3}$ has shown it to be a mixture of two phases, Bi$_{2}$OS$_{2}$ and Bi$_{3}$O$_{2}$S$_{3}$, the latter being superconducting [W. A. Phelan et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 135, 5372 (2013)]. Using density functional theory, we explore the electronic structure of both the phases and the effect of the introduction of stacking faults. Our results demonstrate that the S$_{2}$ layers dope the bismuth-sulphur bands. The bands at the Fermi level are of clear two-dimensional character. One band manifold is confined to the two adjacent, square-lattice bismuth-sulphur planes, a second manifold is confined to the square lattice of sulphur dimers. We show that the introduction of defects in the stacking does not influence the electronic structure. Finally, we also show that spin-orbit coupling does not have any significant effect on the states close to the Fermi level at the energy scale considered.

Vortex-glass phase transition and superconductivity in an under- doped (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystal

Measurements of magnetotransport and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics up to 9 T were used to investigate the vortex phase diagram of an under-doped Measurements of magnetotransport and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics up to 9 T were used to investigate the vortex phase diagram of an under-doped (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystal with Tc=26.2 K. It is found that the anisotropy ratio of the upper critical field Hc2 decreases from 4 to 2.8 with decreasing temperature from Tc to 24.8 K. Consistent with the vortex-glass theory, the I-V curves measured at H=9 T can be well scaled with the vortex-glass transition temperature of Tg=20.7 K and critical exponents z=4.1 and v=1. Analyses in different magnetic fields produced almost identical critical exponent values, with some variation in Tg, corroborating the existence of the vortex-glass transition in this under-doped (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystal up to 9 T. A vortex phase diagram is presented, based on the evolution of Tg and Hc2 with magnetic field.

Current-voltage characteristics of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 and NdFeAsO0.85 superconductors

The vortex phase diagrams of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 and NdFeAsO0.85 superconductors are determined from the analysis of resistivity and current-voltage (I-V) measurements in magnetic fields up to 9 T. A clear vortex glass to liquid transition is identified only in the oxygen deficient NdFeAsO0.85, in which I-V curves can be well scaled onto liquid and glass branches consistent with the vortex glass theory. With increasing magnetic field, the activation energy U0, deduced from the Arrhenius plots of resistivity based on the thermally activated flux-flow model (TAFF), decays more quickly for NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 than for NdFeAsO0.85. Moreover, the irreversibility field Hirr of NdFeAsO0.85 increases more rapidly than that of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 with decreasing temperature. These observations evidence the strong vortex pinning effects, presumably caused by the enhanced defects and disorders in the oxygen deficient NdFeAsO0.85. It is inferred that the enhanced defects and disorder can be also responsible for the vortex glass to liquid transition in the NdFeAsO0.85.
