Separating singular moduli and the primitive element problem

We prove that $|x-y|\ge 800X^{-4}$, where $x$ and $y$ are distinct singular moduli of discriminants not exceeding $X$. We apply this result to the "primitive element problem" for two singular moduli. In a previous article Faye and Riffaut show that the number field $\mathbb Q(x,y)$, generated by two singular moduli $x$ and $y$, is generated by $x-y$ and, with some exceptions, by $x+y$ as well. In this article we fix a rational number $α\ne0,\pm1$ and show that the field $\mathbb Q(x,y)$ is generated by $x+αy$, with a few exceptions occurring when $x$ and $y$ generate the same quadratic field over $\mathbb Q$. Together with the above-mentioned result of Faye and Riffaut, this gives a drastic generalization of a theorem due to Allombert et al. (2015) about solution of linear equations in singular moduli.

Hypergeometric Euler numbers

In this paper, we introduce the hypergeometric Euler number as an analogue of the hypergeometric Bernoulli number and the hypergeometric Cauchy number. We study several expressions and sums of products of hypergeometric Euler numbers. We also introduce complementary hypergeometric Euler numbers and give some characteristic properties. There are strong reasons why these hypergeometric numbers are important. The hypergeometric numbers have one of the advantages that yield the natural extensions of determinant expressions of the numbers, though many kinds of generalizations of the Euler numbers have been considered by many authors.

Reduced interhemispheric functional connectivity of children with autism: evidence from functional near infrared spectroscopy studies

Autism spectrum disorder is a neuro-developmental disorder characterized by abnormalities of neural synchronization. In this study, functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is used to study the difference in functional connectivity in left and right inferior frontal cortices (IFC) and temporal cortices (TC) between autistic and typically developing children between 8-11 years of age. 10 autistic children and 10 typical ones were recruited in our study for 8-min resting state measurement. Results show that the overall interhemispheric correlation of HbO was significantly lower in autistic children than in the controls. In particular, reduced connectivity was found to be most significant in TC area of autism. Autistic children lose the symmetry in the patterns of correlation maps. These results suggest the feasibility of using the fNIRS method to assess abnormal functional connectivity of the autistic brain and its potential application in autism diagnosis.
