Peridynamic modeling for impact failure of wet concrete considering the influence of saturation

In this paper, a modified intermediately homogenized peridynamic (IH-PD) model for analyzing impact failure of wet concrete has been presented under the configuration of ordinary state-based peridynamic theory. The meso-structural properties of concrete are linked to the macroscopic mechanical behavior in the IH-PD model, where the heterogeneity of concrete is taken into account, and the calculation cost does not increase. Simultaneously, the porosity of concrete is considered, which is implemented by deleting the bond between two material points, as well as the influence of porosity on the mechanical properties of concrete. Moreover, the effective bulk and shear modulus of cement mortar in wet concrete (saturated and unsaturated concrete) are calculated respectively. The dynamic model for wet concrete is described from three aspects: strength, dynamic increase factor, and equation of state. Validation of the proposed model is established through analyzing some benchmark tests and comparing with the corresponding experiment and other available numerical results.

The stability and Hopf bifurcation of the diffusive Nicholson's blowflies model in spatially heterogeneous environment

In this paper, we consider the diffusive Nicholson's blowflies model in spatially heterogeneous environment when the diffusion rate is large. We show that the ratio of the average of the maximum per capita egg production rate to that of the death rate affects the dynamics of the model. The unique positive steady state is locally asymptotically stable if the ratio is less than a critical value. However, when the ratio is greater than the critical value, large time delay can make the unique positive steady state unstable through Hopf bifurcation. Especially, the first Hopf bifurcation value tends to that of the ''average'' DDE model when the diffusion rate tends to infinity. Moreover, we show that the direction of the Hopf bifurcation is forward, and the bifurcating periodic solution from the first Hopf bifurcation value is orbitally asymptotically stable, which improves the earlier result by Wei and Li (Nonlinear. Anal., 60: 1351-1367, 2005).

Lithium atom storage in nanoporous cellulose via surface induced $\rm Li_2$ breakage

We demonstrate a physical mechanism that enhances a splitting of diatomic $\rm Li_2$ at cellulose surfaces. The origin of this splitting is a possible surface induced diatomic excited state resonance repulsion. The atomic Li is then free to form either physical or chemical bonds with the cellulose surface and even diffuse into the cellulose layer structure. This allows for an enhanced storage capacity of atomic Li in nanoporous cellulose

Information Exchange via Surface Modified Resonance Energy Transfer

The theory is presented for resonance interaction between two atoms in an excited configuration: one atom, the "receptor" of information (i.e. energy), adsorbed on a phospholipid surface and the other atom, the "emitter" of information (i.e. energy), a long distance away. The dielectric function for a specific phospholipid membrane is obtained from density functional theory calculations. We present numerical results comparing the range and magnitude of non-specific Casimir-Polder interactions with the much more long-ranged, and highly specific, resonance interaction. A study of the resonance interaction with one or both atoms adsorbed on a phospholipid membrane surface reveals a possibility to have a cross over from attraction to repulsion or from repulsion to attraction at separations between receptor and emitter atoms exceeding several hundred Ångströms. The energy transfer and the observed transitions in the sign of the interaction energies near surfaces provide potential new ways to start recognition processes in biological systems.

Reduced interhemispheric functional connectivity of children with autism: evidence from functional near infrared spectroscopy studies

Autism spectrum disorder is a neuro-developmental disorder characterized by abnormalities of neural synchronization. In this study, functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is used to study the difference in functional connectivity in left and right inferior frontal cortices (IFC) and temporal cortices (TC) between autistic and typically developing children between 8-11 years of age. 10 autistic children and 10 typical ones were recruited in our study for 8-min resting state measurement. Results show that the overall interhemispheric correlation of HbO was significantly lower in autistic children than in the controls. In particular, reduced connectivity was found to be most significant in TC area of autism. Autistic children lose the symmetry in the patterns of correlation maps. These results suggest the feasibility of using the fNIRS method to assess abnormal functional connectivity of the autistic brain and its potential application in autism diagnosis.

Some scale-free networks could be robust under the selective node attacks

It is a mainstream idea that scale-free network would be fragile under the selective attacks. Internet is a typical scale-free network in the real world, but it never collapses under the selective attacks of computer viruses and hackers. This phenomenon is different from the deduction of the idea above because this idea assumes the same cost to delete an arbitrary node. Hence this paper discusses the behaviors of the scale-free network under the selective node attack with different cost. Through the experiments on five complex networks, we show that the scale-free network is possibly robust under the selective node attacks; furthermore, the more compact the network is, and the larger the average degree is, then the more robust the network is; With the same average degrees, the more compact the network is, the more robust the network is. This result would enrich the theory of the invulnerability of the network, and can be used to build the robust social, technological and biological networks, and also has the potential to find the target of drugs.
