A graph complexity measure based on the spectral analysis of the Laplace operator

In this work we introduce a concept of complexity for undirected graphs in terms of the spectral analysis of the Laplacian operator defined by the incidence matrix of the graph. Precisely, we compute the norm of the vector of eigenvalues of both the graph and its complement and take their product. Doing so, we obtain a quantity that satisfies two basic properties that are the expected for a measure of complexity. First, complexity of fully connected and fully disconnected graphs vanish. Second, complexity of complementary graphs coincide. This notion of complexity allows us to distinguish different kinds of graphs by placing them in a "croissant-shaped" region of the plane link density - complexity, highlighting some features like connectivity, concentration, uniformity or regularity and existence of clique-like clusters. Indeed, considering graphs with a fixed number of nodes, by plotting the link density versus the complexity we find that graphs generated by different methods take place at different regions of the plane. We consider some generated graphs, in particular the Erdös-Rényi, the Watts-Strogatz and the Barabási-Albert models. Also, we place some particular, let us say deterministic, to wit, lattices, stars, hyper-concentrated and cliques-containing graphs. It is worthy noticing that these deterministic classical models of graphs depict the boundary of the croissant-shaped region. Finally, as an application to graphs generated by real measurements, we consider the brain connectivity graphs from two epileptic patients obtained from magnetoencephalography (MEG) recording, both in a baseline period and in ictal periods .In this case, our definition of complexity could be used as a tool for discerning between states, by the analysis of differences at distinct frequencies of the MEG recording.

Approximating the identity of convolution with random mean and random variance

We provide sufficient conditions on the profile $φ$, on the sequence of random variables $\varepsilon_j>0$ and on the sequence of random vectors $y_j\in\mathbb{R}^n$ such that $\mathscr{E}\left(\frac{1}{\varepsilon_j^n(ω)}\int_{z\in\mathbb{R}^n}φ\left(\frac{|x-z-y_j(ω)|}{\varepsilon_j(ω)}\right)f(z) dz\right)\longrightarrow f(x)$ when $j\to\infty$ for almost every $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$, $f\in L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $1\leq p\leq\infty$, where $\mathscr{E}$ denotes the expectation, $\varepsilon_j$ tends to $0\in\mathbb{R}$ in law and $y_j$ tends to $\mathbf{0}\in\mathbb{R}^n$ in law.

Boundedness and concentration of random singular integrals defined by wavelet summability kernels

We use Cramér-Chernoff type estimates in order to study the Calderón-Zygmund structure of the kernels $\sum_{I\in\mathcal{D}}a_I(ω)ψ_I(x)ψ_I(y)$ where $a_I$ are subgaussian independent random variables and $\{ψ_I: I\in\mathcal{D}\}$ is a wavelet basis where $\mathcal{D}$ are the dyadic intervals in $\mathbb{R}$. We consider both, the cases of standard smooth wavelets and the case of the Haar wavelet.

Partial derivatives, singular integrals and Sobolev Spaces in dyadic settings

In this note we show that the general theory of vector valued singular integral operators of Calderón-Zygmund defined on general metric measure spaces, can be applied to obtain Sobolev type regularity properties for solutions of the dyadic fractional Laplacian. In doing so, we define partial derivatives in terms of Haar multipliers and dyadic homogeneous singular integral operators.

Continuous time random walks and the Cauchy problem for the heat equation

In this paper we deal with anomalous diffusions induced by Continuous Time Random Walks - CTRW in $\mathbb{R}^n$. A particle moves in $\mathbb{R}^n$ in such a way that the probability density function $u(\cdot,t)$ of finding it in region $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ is given by $\int_Ωu(x,t) dx$. The dynamics of the diffusion is provided by a space time probability density $J(x,t)$ compactly supported in $\{t\geq 0\}$. For $t$ large enough, $u$ must satisfy the equation $u(x,t)=[(J-δ)\ast u](x,t)$ where $δ$ is the Dirac delta in space time. We give a sense to a Cauchy type problem for a given initial density distribution $f$. We use Banach fixed point method to solve it, and we prove that under parabolic rescaling of $J$ the equation tends weakly to the heat equation and that for particular kernels $J$ the solutions tend to the corresponding temperatures when the scaling parameter approaches to zero.

Harnack's Inequality and A Priori Estimates for Fractional Powers of Non-symmetric Differential Operators

We obtain a new general extension theorem in Banach spaces for operators which are not required to be symmetric, and apply it to obtain Harnack estimates and a priori regularity for solutions of fractional powers of several second order differential operators. These include weighted elliptic and subellitptic operators in divergence form (nonnecessarily self-adjoint), and nondivergence form operators with rough coefficients. We utilize the reflection extension technique introduced by Caffarelli and Silvestre.

Mean value formulas for solutions of some degenerate elliptic equations and applications

We prove a mean value formula for weak solutions of $div(|y|^{a}\grad u)=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}=\{(x,y): x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}, y\in\mathbb{R}\}$, $-1<a<1$ and balls centered at points of the form $(x,0)$. We obtain an explicit nonlocal kernel for the mean value formula for solutions of $(-\triangle)^{s}f=0$ on a domain $D$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. When $D$ is Lipschitz we prove a Besov type regularity improvement for the solutions of $(-\triangle)^{s}f=0$.

On dyadic nonlocal Schrödinger equations with Besov initial data

In this paper we consider the pointwise convergence to the initial data for the Schrödinger-Dirac equation $i\tfrac{\partial u}{\partial t}=D^βu$ with $u(x,0)=u^0$ in a dyadic Besov space. Here $D^β$ denotes the fractional derivative of order $β$ associated to the dyadic distance $δ$ on $\mathbb{R}^+$. The main tools are a sumability formula for the kernel of $D^β$ and pointwise estimates of the corresponding maximal operator in terms of the dyadic Hardy-Littlewood function and the Calderón sharp maximal operator.
