$Λ_b\to p$ transition form factors in perturbative QCD

We reanalyze the $Λ_b\to p$ transition form factors in the perturbative QCD (PQCD) approach by including higher-twist light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) of a $Λ_b$ baryon and a proton. The previous PQCD evaluation performed decades ago with only the leading-twist $Λ_b$ baryon and proton LCDAs gave the form factors, which are two orders of magnitude smaller than indicated by experimental data. We find that the twist-4 $Λ_b$ baryon LCDAs and the twist-4 and -5 proton LCDAs contribute dominantly, and the enhanced form factors become consistent with those from lattice QCD and other nonperturbative methods. The estimated branching ratios of the semileptonic decays $Λ_b\to p\ell\barν_\ell$ and the hadronic decay $Λ_b\to pπ$ are also close to the data. It implies that the $b$ quark mass is not really heavy enough, and higher-power contributions play a crucial role, similar to the observation made in analyses of $B$ meson transition form factors. With the formalism established in this work, we are ready to study various exclusive heavy baryon decays systematically in the PQCD approach.

Dispersive derivation of the pion distribution amplitude

We derive the dependence of the leading-twist pion light-cone distribution amplitude (LCDA) on a parton momentum fraction $x$ by directly solving the dispersion relations for the moments with inputs from the operator product expansion (OPE) of the corresponding correlation function. It is noticed that these dispersion relations must be organized into those for the Gegenbauer coefficients first in order to avoid the ill-posed problem appearing in the conversion from the moments to the Gegenbauer coefficients. Given the values of various condensates in the OPE, we find that a solution for the pion LCDA, which is stable in the Gegenbauer expansion, exists. Moreover, the solution from summing contributions up to 18 Gegenbauer polynomials is smooth, and can be well approximated by a function proportional to $x^p(1-x)^p$ with $p\approx 0.45$ at the scale $μ=2$ GeV. Turning off the condensates, we get the asymptotic form, independent of the scale $μ$, for the pion LCDA as expected. We then solve for the pion LCDA at a different scale $μ=1.5$ GeV with the condensate inputs at this $μ$, and demonstrate that the result is consistent with the one obtained by evolving the Gegenbauer coefficients from $μ=2$ GeV to 1.5 GeV. That is, our formalism is compatible with the QCD evolution. The strength of the above approach that goes beyond analyses limited to only the first few moments of a LCDA in conventional QCD sum rules is highlighted. The precision of our results can be improved systematically by including higher-order and higher-power terms in the OPE.

Glauber gluons in pion-induced Drell-Yan processes revisited

We reanalyze the anomalous angular distribution of lepton pairs produced in a pion-induced Drell-Yan process by taking into account the Glauber gluon effect in the $k_T$ factorization theorem. Compared to the previous study, we adopt the realistic parton distribution functions (PDFs) for a proton from the CTEQ and for a pion from the xFitter, include the QCD evolutions of the strong coupling and the PDFs, and integrate the differential cross section over the kinematic regions for the NA10, E615 and COMPASS experiments. These improvements then allow rigorous confrontations of theoretical results with the data. It is shown that the lepton angular distribution and the violation of the Lam-Tung relation measured in all the above experiments can be well accommodated with a single Glauber phase. We illustrate the Glauber effect in the geometric picture for a Drell-Yan process, and its distinction from the conventional Boer-Mulders mechanism. The observables are pointed out, which can be used to discriminate the two proposals, when data become more precise.

Dispersive analysis of glueball masses

We develop an inverse matrix method to solve for resonance masses from a dispersion relation obeyed by a correlation function. Given the operator product expansion (OPE) of a correlation function in the deep Euclidean region, we obtain the nonperturbative spectral density, which exhibits resonance structures naturally. The value of the gluon condensate in the OPE is fixed by producing the $ρ$ meson mass in the formalism, and then input into the dispersion relations for the scalar, pseudoscalar and tensor glueballs. It is shown that the low-energy limit of the correlation function for the scalar glueball, derived from the spectral density, discriminates the lattice estimate for the triple-gluon condensate from the single-instanton estimate. The spectral densities for the scalar and pseudoscalar glueballs reveal a double-peak structure: the peak located at lower mass implies that the $f_0(500)$ and $f_0(980)$ ($η$ ad $η'$) mesons contain small amount of gluonium components, and should be included into scalar (pseudoscalar) mixing frameworks. Another peak determines the scalar (pseudoscalar) glueball mass around 1.50 (1.75) GeV with a broad width about 200 MeV, suggesting that the $f_0(1370)$, $f_0(1500)$ and $f_0(1710)$ ($η(1760)$) mesons are the glue-rich states. We also predict the topological susceptability $χ_t^{1/4}=75$-78 MeV, deduced from the correlation function for the pseudoscalar glueball at zero momentum. Our analysis gives no resonance solution for the tensor glueball, which may be attributed to the insufficient nonperturbative condensate information in the currently available OPE.

Is $f_X(1500)$ observed in the $B\to π(K)KK$ decays $ρ^0(1450)$?

We suggest that the uncertain state $f_X(1500)$ observed by Belle and BaBar more than a decade ago, which has been viewed as a single scalar or a combination of several even spin resonances, is the vector $ρ^0(1450)$ reported recently by LHCb. Adopting the perturbative QCD approach, we determine the di-kaon distribution amplitudes with the $ρ^0(1450)$ resonance from the LHCb data for the quasi-two-body decays $B^{\pm}\to π^{\pm}ρ^0(1450)\toπ^{\pm}K^+K^-$. It is then shown that the $B^+ \to K^+K^+K^-$ decay spectrum around the invariant mass $M(K^+K^-)\sim 1.5~\rm GeV$ measured by BaBar can be well described by the resonant contribution from $ρ^0(1450)$. The broad structure in the $B^{+}\to K^{+} K_SK_S$ spectrum around the invariant mass $1.5~\rm GeV$ of a $K_SK_S$ pair, which $ρ^0(1450)$ cannot decay into because of Bose-Einstein statistics, can be accounted for by a nonresonant $S$-wave contribution alone. The branching fractions and/or the direct $CP$ asymmetries of the $B^{\pm}\to π^{\pm}ρ^0(1450)\toπ^{\pm}K^+K^-$, $B^{+}\to K^{+}ρ^0(1450)\to K^+K^+K^-$ and $B^{0}\to K^{0}ρ^0(1450)\to K^0K^+K^-$ modes are predicted, which can be tested at the ongoing LHCb and Belle-II experiments. We encourage experimental colleagues to scrutinize our postulation by analyzing relevant data with higher precision.

Charm fragmentation functions in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

We derive the fragmentation function (FF), which describes the probability for a charm quark to emit a $D$ meson with a certain momentum fraction, in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The corresponding elementary FF is calculated with the quark-meson coupling determined in the NJL model involving charm quarks. The FF in the infinite momentum frame is constructed through the jet process governed by the elementary FF, and then evolved to the charm scale, at which it is defined. To prepare the FF suitable for an analysis of $D$ meson production at CLEO, we further match the above FF to that in the finite momentum frame at one loop in QCD. It is shown that the charm quark FF including the finite momentum effects leads to theoretical results in agreement with the CLEO data.

QCD sum rules with spectral densities solved in inverse problems

We construct QCD sum rules for nonperturbative studies without assuming the quark-hadron duality for the spectral density at low energy on the hadron side. Instead, both resonance and continuum contributions to the spectral density are solved with the operator-product-expansion input on the quark side by treating sum rules as an inverse problem. This new formalism does not involve the continuum threshold, does not require the Borel transformation and stability analysis, and can be extended to extract properties of excited states. Taking the two-current correlator as an example, we demonstrate that the series of $ρ$ resonances can emerge in our formalism, and the decay constants $f_{ρ(770)} (f_{ρ(1450)},f_{ρ(1700)},f_{ρ(1900)})\approx$ 0.22 (0.19, 0.14, 0.14) GeV for the masses $m_{ρ(770)} (m_{ρ(1450)},m_{ρ(1700)},m_{ρ(1900)})\approx$ 0.78 (1.46, 1.70, 1.90) GeV are determined. We also show that the decay width $Γ_{ρ(770)}\approx 0.17$ GeV can be obtained by substituting a Breit-Wigner parametrization for the $ρ(770)$ pole on the hadron side. It is observed that quark condensates of dimension-six on the quark side are crucial for establishing those $ρ$ resonances. Handling the conventional sum rules with the duality assumption as an inverse problem, we find that the multiple pole sum rules widely adopted in the literature do not describe the $ρ$ excitations reasonably. The precision of our theoretical outcomes can be improved systematically by including higher-order and higher-power corrections on the quark side. Broad applications of this formalism to abundant low energy QCD observables are expected.

Hadronic structure of the photon at small x in holographic QCD

We present our analysis on the photon structure functions at small Bjorken variable x in the framework of the holographic QCD. In the kinematic region, a photon can fluctuate into vector mesons and behaves like a hadron rather than a pointlike particle. Assuming the Pomeron exchange dominance, the dominant hadronic contribution to the structure functions is computed by convoluting the probe and target photon density distributions obtained from the wave functions of the U(1) vector field in the five-dimensional AdS space and the Brower-Polchinski-Strassler-Tan Pomeron exchange kernel. Our calculations are in agreement with both the experimental data from OPAL collaboration at LEP and those calculated from the parton distribution functions of the photon proposed by Glück, Reya, and Schienbein. The predictions presented here will be tested at future linear colliders, such as the planned International Linear Collider.

Non-dipolar Wilson links for quasi-parton distribution functions

We propose a modified definition for a quasi-parton distribution function (QPDF) with an equal-time correlator in the large momentum limit, whose two pieces of space-like Wilson links are oriented in orthogonal directions. It is explicitly shown at one-loop level that the linear divergence in the original QPDF with dipolar Wilson links, which complicates its matching to the standard light-cone parton distribution function (LPDF), is removed. The LPDF can then be extracted reliably from Euclidean lattice data for the QPDF with the non-dipolar Wilson links.

Quasi-two-body decays $B\to Kρ\to Kππ$ in perturbative QCD approach

We analyze the quasi-two-body decays $B\to Kρ\to Kππ$ in the perturbative QCD (PQCD) approach, in which final-state interactions between the pions in the resonant regions associated with the $P$-wave states $ρ(770)$ and $ρ^\prime(1450)$ are factorized into two-pion distribution amplitudes. Adopting experimental inputs for the time-like pion form factors involved in two-pion distribution amplitudes, we calculate branching ratios and direct $CP$ asymmetries of the $B\to Kρ(770),Kρ^\prime(1450)\to Kππ$ modes. It is shown that agreement of theoretical results with data can be achieved, through which Gegenbauer moments of the $P$-wave two-pion distribution amplitudes are determined. The consistency between the three-body and two-body analyses of the $B\to Kρ(770)\to Kππ$ decays supports the PQCD factorization framework for exclusive hadronic $B$ meson decays.

Resolving the $B \to K π$ puzzle by Glauber-gluon effects

We extend the perturbative QCD formalism including the Glauber gluons, which has been shown to accommodate the measured $B \to ππ$ and $B^0\toρ^0 ρ^0$ branching ratios simultaneously, to the analysis of the $B \to K π$ and $K \bar K$ decays. It is observed that the convolution of the universal Glauber phase factors with the transverse-momentum-dependent kaon wave function reveals weaker (stronger) Glauber effects than in the pion ($ρ$ meson) case as expected. Our predictions for the branching ratios and the direct CP asymmetries of the $B \to K π$ and $K \bar K$ modes at next-to-leading-order accuracy agree well with data. In particular, the predicted difference of the $B^\pm \to K^\pm π^0$ and $B^0 \to K^\pm π^\mp$ direct CP asymmetries, $ΔA_{Kπ}\equiv A_{\rm CP}^{\rm dir}(K^\pm π^0)[0.021 \pm 0.016] - A_{\rm CP}^{\rm dir}(K^\pm π^\mp)[-0.081 \pm 0.017] = 0.102 \pm 0.023$, is consistent with the measured $ΔA_{Kπ} = 0.119 \pm 0.022$ within uncertainties, and the known $B \to Kπ$ puzzle is resolved. The above $B \to ππ$, $Kπ$ and $K \bar K$ studies confirm that the Glauber gluons associated with pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons enhance the color-suppressed tree amplitude significantly, but have a small impact on other topological amplitudes.

$S$-wave resonance contributions to the $B^0_{(s)}\to J/ψπ^+π^-$ and $B_s\toπ^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ decays

We study $S$-wave resonance contributions to the $B^0_{(s)}\to J/ψπ^+π^-$ and $B_s\toπ^+π^-\ell^+\ell^-$ decays in the perturbative QCD (PQCD) framework by introducing two-hadron distribution amplitudes for final states. The Breit-Wigner formula for the $f_0(500)$, $f_0(1500)$ and $f_0(1790)$ resonances and the Flatté model for the $f_0(980)$ resonance are adopted to parameterize the time-like scalar form factors in the two-pion distribution amplitudes, which include both resonant and nonresonant contributions. The resultant branching fraction and differential branching fraction in the pion-pair invariant mass for each resonance channel are consistent with experimental data. The determined $S$-wave two-pion distribution amplitudes, containing the information of both resonant and nonresonant rescattering phases, can be employed to predict direct CP asymmetries of other three-body hadronic $B$ meson decays in various localized regions of two-pion phase space.

Jet substructures of boosted polarized hadronic tops

We study jet substructures of a boosted polarized top quark, which undergoes the hadronic decay $t\to b u\bar d$, in the perturbative QCD framework, focusing on the energy profile and the differential energy profile. These substructures are factorized into the convolution of a hard top-quark decay kernel with a bottom-quark jet function and a $W$-boson jet function, where the latter is further factorized into the convolution of a hard $W$-boson decay kernel with two light-quark jet functions. Computing the hard kernels to leading order in QCD and including the resummation effect in the jet functions, we show that the differential jet energy profile is a useful observable for differentiating the helicity of a boosted hadronic top quark: a right-handed top jet exhibits quick descent of the differential energy profile with the inner test cone radius $r$, which is attributed to the $\mbox{V-A}$ structure of weak interaction and the dead-cone effect associated with the $W$-boson jet. The above helicity differentiation may help to reveal the chiral structure of physics beyond the Standard Model at high energies.

Non-dipolar Wilson links for transverse-momentum-dependent wave functions

We propose a new definition of a transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) wave function with simpler soft subtraction for $k_T$ factorization of hard exclusive processes. The un-subtracted wave function involves two pieces of non-light-like Wilson links oriented in different directions, so that the rapidity singularity appearing in usual $k_T$ factorization is regularized, and the pinched singularity from Wilson-link self-energy corrections is alleviated to a logarithmic one. In particular no soft function is needed, when the two pieces of Wilson links are orthogonal to each other. We show explicitly at one-loop level that the simpler definition with the non-dipolar Wilson links exhibits the same infrared behavior as the one with the dipolar Wilson links and complicated soft subtraction. It is pointed out that both definitions reduce to the naive TMD wave function as the non-light-like Wilson links approach to the light cone. Their equivalence is then extended to all orders by considering the evolution in the Wilson-link rapidity.

Photon structure functions at small $x$ in holographic QCD

We investigate the photon structure functions at small Bjorken variable $x$ in the framework of the holographic QCD, assuming dominance of the Pomeron exchange. The quasi-real photon structure functions are expressed as convolution of the Brower-Polchinski-Strassler-Tan (BPST) Pomeron kernel and the known wave functions of the U(1) vector field in the five-dimensional AdS space, in which the involved parameters in the BPST kernel have been fixed in previous studies of the nucleon structure functions. The predicted photon structure functions, as confronted with data, provide a clean test of the BPST kernel. The agreement between theoretical predictions and data is demonstrated, which supports applications of holographic QCD to hadronic processes in the nonperturbative region. Our results are also consistent with those derived from the parton distribution functions of the photon proposed by Glück, Reya, and Schienbein, implying realization of the vector meson dominance in the present model setup.

Transverse-momentum-dependent wave functions with Glauber gluons in $B \to ππ$, $ρρ$ decays

We investigate the Glauber-gluon effect on the $B \to ππ$ and $ρρ$ decays, which is introduced via a convolution of a universal Glauber phase factor with transverse-momentum-dependent(TMD) meson wave functions in the $k_T$ factorization theorem. For an appropriate parametrization of the Glauber phase, it is observed that a TMD wave function for the pion ($ρ$ meson) with a weak (strong) falloff in parton transverse momentum $k_T$ leads to significant (moderate) modification of the $B^0 \to π^0 π^0$ ($B^0 \to ρ^0 ρ^0$) branching ratio: the former (latter) is enhanced (reduced) by about a factor of 2 (15\%). This observation is consistent with the dual role of the pion as a massless Nambu-Goldstone boson and as a $q \bar q$ bound state, which requires a tighter spatial distribution of its leading Fock state relative to higher Fock states. The agreement between the theoretical predictions and the data for all the $B \to ππ$ and $ρ^0 ρ^0$ branching ratios is then improved simultaneously, and it is possible to resolve the $B \to ππ$ puzzle.

Branching ratios and direct CP asymmetries in $D\to PV$ decays

We study the two-body hadronic $D\to PV$ decays, where $P$ ($V$) denotes a pseudoscalar (vector) meson, in the factorization-assisted topological-amplitude approach proposed in our previous work. This approach is based on the factorization of short-distance and long-distance dynamics into Wilson coefficients and hadronic matrix elements of four-fermion operators, respectively, with the latter being parametrized in terms of several nonperturbative quantities. We further take into account the $ρ$-$ω$ mixing effect, which improves the global fit to the branching ratios involving the $ρ^0$ and $ω$ mesons. Combining short-distance dynamics associated with penguin operators and the hadronic parameters determined from the global fit to branching ratios, we predict direct $CP$ asymmetries. In particular, the direct $CP$ asymmetries in the $D^0\to K^0\overline{K}^{*0},~\overline{K}^0K^{*0}$, $D^+\toπ^+ρ^0$, and $D_s^+\to K^+ω,~K^+ϕ$ decays are found to be of ${\cal O}(10^{-3})$, which can be observed at the LHCb or future Belle II experiment. We also predict the $CP$ asymmetry observables of some neutral $D$ meson decays.

Direct CP asymmetries of three-body $B$ decays in perturbative QCD

We propose a theoretical framework for analyzing three-body hadronic $B$ meson decays based on the perturbative QCD approach. The crucial nonperturbative input is a two-hadron distribution amplitude for final states, whose involved time-like form factor and rescattering phase are fit to relevant experimental data. Together with the short-distance strong phase from the $b$-quark decay kernel, we are able to make predictions for direct CP asymmetries in, for example, the $B^\pm \to π^+ π^- π^\pm$ and $π^+π^-K^\pm$ modes, which are consistent with the LHCb data in various localized regions of phase space. Applications of our formalism to other three-body hadronic and radiative $B$ meson decays are mentioned.

Glauber gluons in spectator amplitudes for $B \to πM$ decays

We extract the Glauber divergences from the spectator amplitudes for two-body hadronic decays $B \to M_1 M_2$ in the $k_T$ factorization theorem, where $M_2$ denotes the meson emitted at the weak vertex. Employing the eikonal approximation, the divergences are factorized into the corresponding Glauber phase factors associated with the $M_1$ and $M_2$ mesons. It is observed that the latter factor enhances the spectator contribution to the color-suppressed tree amplitude by modifying the interference pattern between the two involved leading-order diagrams. The first factor rotates the enhanced spectator contribution by a phase, and changes its interference with other tree diagrams. The above Glauber effects are compared with the mechanism in elastic rescattering among various $M_1 M_2$ final states, which has been widely investigated in the literature. We postulate that only the Glauber effect associated with a pion is significant, due to its special role as a $q \bar q$ bound state and as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson simultaneously. Treating the Glauber phases as additional inputs in the perturbative QCD (PQCD) approach, we find a good fit to all the $B \to ππ$, $πρ$, $πω$, and $πK$ data, and resolve the long-standing $ππ$ and $πK$ puzzles. The nontrivial success of this modified PQCD formalism is elaborated.

Jet substructures of boosted polarized top quarks

We study jet substructures of a boosted polarized top quark, which undergoes the semileptonic decay $t\to b\ellν$, in the perturbative QCD framework. The jet mass distribution (energy profile) is factorized into the convolution of a hard top-quark decay kernel with the bottom-quark jet function (jet energy function). Computing the hard kernel to leading order in QCD and inputting the latter functions from the resummation formalism, we observe that the jet mass distribution is not sensitive to the helicity of the top quark, but the energy profile is: energy is accumulated faster within a left-handed top jet than within a right-handed one, a feature related to the $V-A$ structure of weak interaction. It is pointed out that the energy profile is a simple and useful jet observable for helicity discrimination of a boosted top quark, which helps identification of physics beyond the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider. The extension of our analysis to other jet substructures, including those associated with a hadronically decaying polarized top quark, is proposed.

Perturbative QCD study of $B_s$ decays to a pseudoscalar meson and a tensor meson

We study two-body hadronic $B_s\to PT$ decays, with $P (T)$ being a light pseudoscalar (tensor) meson, in the perturbative QCD approach. The CP-averaged branching ratios and the direct CP asymmetries of the $ΔS=0$ modes are predicted, where $ΔS$ is the difference between the strange numbers of final and initial states. We also define and calculate experimental observables for the $ΔS=1$ modes under the $B_s^0-\bar{B}_s^0$ mixing, including CP averaged branching ratios, time-integrated CP asymmetries, and the CP observables $C_{f}$, $D_{f}$ and $S_{f}$. Results are compared to the $B_s\to PV$ ones in the literature, and to the $B\to PT$ ones, which indicate considerable U-spin symmetry breaking. Our work provides theoretical predictions for the $B_s\to PT$ decays for the first time, some of which will be potentially measurable at future experiments.

Spin analyzing power for polarized top decays with jets

We perform perturbative QCD factorization of infrared radiations associated with an energetic $b$ quark from a polarized top quark decay, taking the semi-leptonic channel as an example. The resultant formula is expressed as a convolution of an infrared-finite heavy-quark kernel with a $b$-quark jet function. Evaluating the heavy-quark kernel up to leading order in the coupling constant and adopting the jet function from QCD resummation, we predict the dependence of the spin analyzing power for a polarized top quark on the invariant mass of the $b$-quark jet. It is observed that the spin analyzing power could be enhanced by a factor 2 compared to the inclusive case with the jet mass being integrated over. It is worthwhile to test experimentally the enhancement of the spin analyzing power due to the inclusion of jet dynamics.

Discriminating Higgs production mechanisms using jet energy profiles

We present a new tool for precision measurements of the Higgs boson production mechanisms at the LHC. We study events with a Higgs boson produced with two forward jets. Even with fairly stringent cuts, one expects a significant contamination of gluon fusion (GF) in addition to vector-boson fusion (VBF) in the event sample. By measuring the jet energy profile of the most central jet, we find that SM production can be distinguished from either pure VBF or pure GF at the $5σ$ level with 100 fb$^{-1}$ of luminosity at the 14 TeV LHC. Moreover, this discrimination technique can be used to validate or rule out new physics models that predict similar observable branching fractions as the 125 GeV SM Higgs but have different production mechanisms.

Glauber gluons in pion-induced Drell-Yan processes

We point out that the existence of Glauber gluons in the $k_T$ factorization theorem can account for the violation of the Lam-Tung relation, namely, the anomalous lepton angular distribution, observed in pion-induced Drell-Yan processes. Radiations, that balance the lepton-pair transverse momentum, cause the responsible spin-transverse-momentum correlation in the Glauber-gluon background. It is argued that the Glauber effect is significant in the pion due to its unique role of being a Nambu-Goldstone boson and a $q\bar q$ bound state simultaneously. This mechanism is compared to other resolutions in the literature by means of vacuum effects and Boer-Mulders functions. We propose to discriminate the above resolutions by measuring the $p\bar p$ Drell-Yan process at GSI and J-PARC.

Joint resummation for pion wave function and pion transition form factor

We construct an evolution equation for the pion wave function in the $k_T$ factorization theorem, whose solution sums the mixed logarithm $\ln x\ln k_T$ to all orders, with $x$ ($k_T$) being a parton momentum fraction (transverse momentum). This joint resummation induces strong suppression of the pion wave function in the small $x$ and large $b$ regions, $b$ being the impact parameter conjugate to $k_T$, and improves the applicability of perturbative QCD to hard exclusive processes. The above effect is similar to those from the conventional threshold resummation for the double logarithm $\ln^2 x$ and the conventional $k_T$ resummation for $\ln^2 k_T$. Combining the evolution equation for the hard kernel, we are able to organize all large logarithms in the $γ^{\ast} π^{0} \to γ$ scattering, and to establish a scheme-independent $k_T$ factorization formula. It will be shown that the significance of next-to-leading-order contributions and saturation behaviors of this process at high energy differ from those under the conventional resummations. It implies that QCD logarithmic corrections to a process must be handled appropriately, before its data are used to extract a hadron wave function. Our predictions for the involved pion transition form factor, derived under the joint resummation and the input of a non-asymptotic pion wave function with the second Gegenbauer moment $a_2=0.05$, match reasonably well the CLEO, BaBar, and Belle data.

Next-to-leading-order time-like pion form factors in $k_T$ factorization

We calculate the time-like pion-photon transition form factor and the pion electromagnetic form factor up to next-to-leading order (NLO) of the strong coupling constant in the leading-twist $k_T$ factorization formalism. It is found that the NLO corrections to the magnitude (phase) are lower than 30% ($30^\circ$) for the former, and lower than 25% ($10^\circ$) for the latter at large invariant mass squared $Q^2>30$ GeV$^2$ of the virtual photons. The increase of the strong phases with $Q^2$ is obtained, consistent with the tendency indicated by experimental data. This behavior is attributed to the inclusion of parton transverse momenta $k_T$, implying that the $k_T$ factorization is an appropriate framework for analyzing complex time-like form factors. Potential extensions of our formalism to two-body and three-body hadronic $B$ meson decays are pointed out.

QCD resummation for light-particle jets

We construct an evolution equation for the invariant-mass distribution of light-quark and gluon jets in the framework of QCD resummation. The solution of the evolution equation exhibits a behavior consistent with Tevatron CDF data: the jet distribution vanishes in the small invariant-mass limit, and its peak moves toward the high invariant-mass region with the jet energy. We also construct an evolution equation for the energy profile of the light-quark and gluon jets in the similar framework. The solution shows that the energy accumulates faster within a light-quark jet cone than within a gluon jet cone. The jet energy profile convoluted with hard scattering and parton distribution functions matches well with the Tevatron CDF and the large-hadron-collider (LHC) CMS data. Moreover, comparison with the CDF and CMS data implies that jets with large (small) transverse momentum are mainly composed of the light-quark (gluon) jets. At last, we discuss the application of the above solutions for the light-particle jets to the identification of highly-boosted heavy particles produced at LHC.

Resummation of rapidity logarithms in $B$ meson wave functions

We construct an evolution equation for the $B$ meson wave functions in the $k_T$ factorization theorem, whose solutions sum the double logarithms associated with the light-cone singularities, namely, the rapidity logarithms. The derivation is subtler than that of the Sudakov resummation for an energetic light hadron, due to the involvement of the effective heavy-quark field. The renormalization-group evolution in the factorization scale needs to be included in order to derive an ultraviolet-finite and scale-invariant kernel for resumming the rapidity logarithms. It is observed that this kernel is similar to that of the joint resummation for QCD processes in extreme kinematic regions, which combines the threshold and $k_T$ resummations. We show that the resummation effect maintains the normalization of the $B$ meson wave functions, and strengths their convergent behavior at small spectator momentum. The resummation improved $B$ meson wave functions are then employed in the leading-order analysis of the $B\toπ$ transition form factors, which lead to approximately 25% deduction in the large recoil region.

Resummation with Wilson lines off the light cone

I review the resummation formalism for organizing large logarithms in perturbative expansion of collinear subprocesses through the variation of Wilson lines off the light cone. A master equation is derived, which involves the evolution kernel resulting from this variation. It is then demonstrated that all the known single- and double-logarithm summations for a parton distribution function or a transverse-momentum-dependentparton distribution can be reproduced from the master equation by applying appropriate soft-gluon approximations to the evolution kernel. Moreover, jet substructures, information which is crucial for particle identification at the Large Hadron Collider and usually acquired from event generators, can also be calculated in this formalism.

$η_c$ mixing effects on charmonium and $B$ meson decays

We include the $η_c$ meson into the $η$-$η'$-$G$ mixing formalism constructed in our previous work, where $G$ represents the pseudoscalar gluball. The mixing angles in this tetramixing matrix are constrained by theoretical and experimental implications from relevant hadronic processes. Especially, the angle between $η_c$ and $G$ is found to be about $11^\circ$ from the measured decay widths of the $η_c$ meson. The pseudoscalar glueball mass $m_G$, the pseudoscalar densities $m_{qq,ss,cc}$ and the U(1) anomaly matrix elements associated with the mixed states are solved from the anomalous Ward identities. The solution $m_G\approx 1.4$ GeV obtained from the $η$-$η'$-$G$ mixing is confirmed, while $m_{qq}$ grows to above the pion mass, and thus increases perturbative QCD predictions for the branching ratios $Br(B\toη'K)$. We then analyze the $η_c$-mixing effects on charmonium magnetic dipole transitions, and on the $B\toη^{(\prime)}K_S$ branching ratios and CP asymmetries, which further improve the consistency between theoretical predictions and data. A predominant observation is that the $η_c$ mixing enhances the perturbative QCD predictions for $Br(B\toη'K)$ by 18%, but does not alter those for $Br(B\toηK)$. The puzzle due to the large $Br(B\toη'K)$ data is then resolved.

Branching ratios and direct CP asymmetries in $D\to PP$ decays

We propose a theoretical framework for analyzing two-body nonleptonic $D$ meson decays, based on the factorization of short-distance (long-distance) dynamics into Wilson coefficients (hadronic matrix elements of four-fermion operators). The parametrization of hadronic matrix elements in terms of several nonperturbative quantities is demonstrated for the $D\to PP$ decays, $P$ denoting a pseudoscalar meson. We consider the evolution of Wilson coefficients with energy release in individual decay modes, and the Glauber strong phase associated with the pion in nonfactorizable annihilation amplitudes, that is attributed to the unique role of the pion as a Nambu-Goldstone boson and a quark-anti-quark bound state simultaneously. The above inputs improve the global fit to the branching ratios involving the $η'$ meson, and resolves the long-standing puzzle from the $D^0\toπ^+π^-$ and $D^0\to K^+K^-$ branching ratios, respectively. Combining short-distance dynamics associated with penguin operators and the hadronic parameters determined from the global fit to branching ratios, we predict direct CP asymmetries, to which the quark loops and the scalar penguin annihilation give dominant contributions. In particular, we predict $ΔA_{\rm CP}\equiv A_{\rm CP}(K^+K^-)-A_{\rm CP}(π^+π^-)=-1.00\times 10^{-3}$, lower than the LHCb and CDF data.

Implications on $η$-$η'$-glueball mixing from $B_{d/s} \to J/Ψη^{(')}$ Decays

We point out that the recent Belle measurements of the $B_{d/s} \to J/Ψη^{(')}$ decays imply large pseudoscalar glueball contents in the $η^{(\prime)}$ meson. These decays are studied in the perturbative QCD (PQCD) approach, considering the $η$-$η'$-$G$ mixing, where $G$ represents the pseudoscalar glueball. It is shown that the PQCD predictions for the $B_{d/s} \to J/Ψη^{(')}$ branching ratios agree well with the data for the mixing angle $ϕ_G\approx 30^\circ$ between the flavor-singlet state and the pure pseudoscalar glueball. Extending the formalism to the $η$-$η'$-$G$-$η_c$ tetramixing, the abnormally large observed $B_d\to Kη'$ branching ratios are also explained. The proposed mixing formalism is applicable to other heavy meson decays into $η^{(\prime)}$ mesons, and could be tested by future LHCb and Super-$B$ factory data.

Next-to-leading-order corrections to $B \to π$ form factors in $k_T$ factorization

We calculate next-to-leading-order (NLO) corrections to the $B\toπ$ transition form factors at leading twist in the $k_T$ factorization theorem. Light partons off-shell by $k_T^2$ are considered in the quark diagrams, in the effective diagrams for the $B$ meson wave function defined with the effective heavy-quark field, and in the effective diagrams for the pion wave function. It is explicitly demonstrated that the infrared logarithms $\ln k_T^2$ cancel between the above sets of diagrams, as deriving the $k_T$-dependent NLO hard kernel from their difference. The infrared finiteness of the hard kernel confirms the application of the $k_T$ factorization theorem to $B$ meson semileptonic decays. The NLO pion wave function is identical to those constructed from the pion transition and electromagnetic form factors, consistent with its universality. Choosing the renormalization and factorization scales lower than the $B$ meson mass, the NLO corrections are under control: they amount only up to 30% of the form factors at large recoil of the pion, when varying models for the meson wave functions.

Next-to-leading-order correction to pion form factor in $k_T$ factorization

We calculate next-to-leading-order (NLO) correction to the pion electromagnetic form factor at leading twist in the $k_T$ factorization theorem. Partons off-shell by $k_T^2$ are considered in both quark diagrams and effective diagrams for the transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) pion wave function. The light-cone singularities in the TMD pion wave function are regularized by rotating the Wilson lines away from the light cone. The soft divergences from gluon exchanges among initial- and final-state partons cancel exactly. We derive the infrared-finite $k_T$-dependent NLO hard kernel for the pion electromagnetic form factor by taking the difference of the above two sets of diagrams. Varying the renormalization and factorization scales, we find that the NLO correction is smaller, when both the scales are set to the invariant masses of internal particles: it becomes lower than 40% of the leading-order (LO) contribution for momentum transfer squared $Q^2>7$ GeV$^2$. It is observed that the NLO leading-twist correction does not play an essential role in explaining the experimental data, but the LO higher-twist contribution does.

Nonlocal Condensate Model for QCD Sum Rules

We include effects of nonlocal quark condensates into QCD sum rules (QSR) via the K$\ddot{\mathrm{a}}$ll$\acute{\mathrm{e}}$n-Lehmann representation for a dressed fermion propagator, in which a negative spectral density function manifests their nonperturbative nature. Applying our formalism to the pion form factor as an example, QSR results are in good agreement with data for momentum transfer squared up to $Q^2 \approx 10 $ GeV$^2$. It is observed that the nonlocal quark condensate contribution descends like $1/Q^2$, different from the exponential decrease in $Q^2$ obtained in the literature, and contrary to the linear rise in the local-condensate approximation.

Possible resolution of the B -> pi pi, pi K puzzles

We show that there exist uncanceled soft divergences in the k_T factorization for nonfactorizable amplitudes of two-body nonleptonic B meson decays, similar to those identified in hadron hadroproduction. These divergences can be grouped into a soft factor using the eikonal approximation, which is then treated as an additional nonperturbative input in the perturbative QCD formalism. Viewing the special role of the pion as a q-qbar bound state and as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson, we postulate that the soft effect associated with it is significant. This soft factor enhances the nonfactorizable color-suppressed tree amplitudes, such that the branching ratios B(pi^0 pi^0) and B(pi^0 rho^0) are increased under the constraint of the B(rho^0 rho^0) data, the difference between the direct CP asymmetries A_{CP}(pi^\mp K^\pm) and A_{CP}(pi^0 K^\pm) is enlarged, and the mixing-induced CP asymmetry S_{pi^0 K_S} is reduced. Namely, the known pi pi and pi K puzzles can be resolved simultaneously.

QCD resummation for jet substructures

We provide a novel development in jet physics by predicting the energy profiles of light-quark and gluon jets in the framework of perturbative QCD. Resumming large logarithmic contributions to all orders in the coupling constant, our predictions are shown to agree well with Tevatron CDF and Large-Hadron-Collider CMS data. We also extend our resummation formalism to the invariant mass distributions of light-quark and gluon jets produced in hadron collisions. The predicted peak positions and heights in jet mass distributions are consistent with CDF data within uncertainties induced by parton distribution functions.

Restoration of $k_T$ factorization for low $p_T$ hadron hadroproduction

We discuss the applicability of the $k_T$ factorization theorem to low-$p_T$ hadron production in hadron-hadron collision in a simple toy model, which involves only scalar particles and gluons. It has been shown that the $k_T$ factorization for high-$p_T$ hadron hadroproduction is broken by soft gluons in the Glauber region, which are exchanged among a transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton density and other subprocesses of the collision. We explain that the contour of a loop momentum can be deformed away from the Glauber region at low $p_T$, so the above residual infrared divergence is factorized by means of the standard eikonal approximation. The $k_T$ factorization is then restored in the sense that a TMD parton density maintains its universality. Because the resultant Glauber factor is independent of hadron flavors, experimental constraints on its behavior are possible. The $k_T$ factorization can also be restored for the transverse single-spin asymmetry in hadron-hadron collision at low $p_T$ in a similar way, with the residual infrared divergence being factorized into the same Glauber factor.

Three-parton contribution to pion form factor in kT factorization

We set up a framework for the study of the power-suppressed three-parton contribution to the pion electromagnetic form factor in the $k_T$ factorization theorem. It is first shown that the gauge dependence proportional to parton transverse momenta from the two-parton Fock state and the gauge dependence associated with the three-parton Fock state cancel each other. After verifying the gauge invariance, we derive the three-parton-to-three-parton $k_T$-dependent hard kernel at leading order of the coupling constant, and find that it leads to about 5% correction to the pion electromagnetic form factor in the whole range of experimentally accessible momentum transfer squared. This subleading contribution is much smaller than the leading-order twist-2, next-to-leading-order twist-2 and leading-order two-parton twist-3 ones, which have been calculated in the literature.

Three-parton contribution to the $B\toπ$ form factors in $k_T$ factorization

We calculate the three-parton twist-3 contribution to the $B\toπ$ transition form factors in the $k_T$ factorization theorem. Since different mesons are involved in the initial and final states, two(three)-parton-to-three(two)-parton amplitudes do not vanish. It is found that the dominant contribution arises from the diagrams with the additional valence gluon attaching to the leading-order hard gluon. Employing the three-parton meson distribution amplitudes from QCD sum rules, we show that this subleading piece amounts only up to few percents of the form factors at large recoil of the pion. The framework for analyzing three-parton contributions to $B$ meson decays in the $k_T$ factorization is established.

Comment on "Nonuniversality of Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions at Small x"

We point out that the analysis in arXiv:1003.0482 actually verifies the universality of transverse momentum dependent quark distributions at small $x$, which supports the observation in our earlier work arXiv:0904.4150. Once the gluon exchanges responsible for the additional infrared divergences are factorized and summed into an exponential factor, it can be expressed as a matrix element of Wilson line operators, and treated as a nonperturbative input to the $k_T$ factorization of $pA$ collisions. The same exponential factor has been extracted from $pp$ collisions in arXiv:0904.4150, rendering possible experimental constraints on its behavior from $pp$ processes, and predictions for $pA$ processes.

Comment on "Gauge Invariance and $k_T$-Factorization of Exclusive Processes"

We point out mistakes made in the one-loop calculation of some diagrams for the process $πγ^* \to γ$ in the preprint arXiv:0807.0296, and present correct results. Especially, we have difficulty to understand their argument that a highly off-shell gluon generates a light-cone (infrared) singularity. It is shown by means of the Ward identity that the gauge-dependent light-cone singularity found in arXiv:0807.0296 does not exist. It is then shown that a hard kernel derived in the $k_T$ factorization of exclusive processes is gauge invariant and free of the light-cone singularity.

Penguin pollution in the B^0 -> J/psi K_S decay

We present the most complete analysis of the penguin correction to the extraction of the standard-model parameter sin(2ϕ_1) from the B^0 -> J/psi K_S decay up to leading power in 1/m_b and to next-to-leading order in α_s, ϕ_1 being the weak phase, m_b the b quark mass, and α_s the strong coupling constant. The deviation ΔS_{J/psi K_S} of the mixing-induced CP asymmetry from sin(2ϕ_1) and the direct CP asymmetry A_{J/psi K_S} are both found to be of O(10^{-3}) in a formalism that combines the QCD-improved factorization and perturbative QCD approaches. The above results, different from those of O(10^{-4}) and of O(10^{-2}) obtained in the previous calculations, provide an important standard-model reference for verifying new physics from the B^0 -> J/psi K_S data.

Nonfactorizable contributions to $B$ meson decays into charmonia

We analyze the $B\to (J/ψ, χ_{c0},χ_{c1},η_c)K^{(*)}$ decays, which have small or even vanishing branching ratios in naive factorization assumption (FA). We calculate nonfactorizable corrections to FA in the perturbative QCD approach based on $k_T$ factorization theorem. The charmonium distribution amplitudes are inferred from the non-relativistic heavy quarkonium wave functions. It is found that the nonfactorizable contributions enhance the branching ratios and generate the relative phases among helicity amplitudes of the above modes. Most of the observed branching ratios, polarization fractions, and relative phases, except those of $B\toη_c K$, are explained. Our predictions for the $B\to (χ_{c0},χ_{c1},η_c)K^*$ decays can be compared with future data.

Polarizations in B -> VV decays

We demonstrate that the polarization fractions of most tree-dominated $B\to VV$ decays can be simply understood by means of kinematics in the heavy-quark or large-energy limit. For example, the longitudinal polarization fractions $R_L$ of the $B^0\to (D_s^{*+}, D^{*+}, ρ^+)D^{*-}$ and $B^+\to (D_s^{*+}, D^{*+}, ρ^+)ρ^0$ modes increase as the masses of the mesons $D_s^{*+}, D^{*+}, ρ^+$ emitted from the weak vertex decrease. The subleading finite-mass or finite-energy corrections modify these simple estimates only slightly. Our predictions for the $B\to D_{(s)}^* D^*$ polarization fractions derived in the perturbative QCD framework, especially $R_L\sim 1$ for $B^0\to {\bar D}^{*0} D^{*0}$ governed by nonfactorizable $W$-exchange amplitudes, can be confronted with future data. For penguin-dominated modes, such as $B\toρ(ω) K^*$, the polarization fractions can be understood by the annihilation effect from the $(S-P)(S+P)$ operators, plus the interference with a small tree amplitude. At last, we comment on the various mechanism proposed in the literature to explain the abnormal $B\to ϕK^*$ polarization data, none of which are satisfactory.

Two-parton twist-3 factorization in perturbative QCD

We prove collinear factorization theorem for the process $πγ^*\toπ$ at the twist-3 level in the covariant gauge by means of the Ward identity, concentrating on the two-parton case. It is shown that soft divergences cancel and collinear divergences are grouped into the pseudo-scalar and pseudo-tensor two-parton twist-3 pion distribution amplitudes. The delicate summation of a complete set of diagrams for achieving factorization in momentum, spin, and color spaces is emphasized. The proof is then extended to the exclusive semileptonic decay $B\toπl\barν$, assuming the hard scale to be of $O(\sqrt{\barΛM_B})$, where $\barΛ$ is a hadronic scale and $M_B$ the $B$ meson mass. We explain the distinction between the factorization of collinear divergences for a pion distribution amplitude and of soft divergences for a $B$ meson distribution amplitude. The gauge invariance and universality of the two-parton twist-3 pion distribution amplitudes are confirmed. The proof presented here can accommodate the leading twist-2 case. We then compare our proof with that performed in the framework of soft-collinear effective theory.

Weak phases from topological-amplitude parametrization

We propose a parametrization for two-body nonleptonic $B$ meson decays, in which the various topologies of amplitudes are counted in terms of powers of the Wolfenstein parameter $λ\sim 0.22$. The weak phases and the amplitudes are determined by comparing this parametrization with available measurements. It is possible to obtain the phase $ϕ_3$ from the $B\to Kπ$ data up to theoretical uncertainty of $O(λ^3)\sim 1%$. The recently measured $B_d^0\toπ^0π^0$ branching ratio implies a large color-suppressed or penguin amplitude, and that the extraction of the phase $ϕ_2$ from the $B\toππ$ data may suffer theoretical uncertainty more than the expected one of $O(λ^2)\sim 5%$.

Threshold resummation for nonleptonic B meson decays

We investigate the double logarithmic corrections $α_s\ln^2 x$, x being a parton momentum fraction, in two-body nonleptonic B meson decays in collinear factorization theorem of perturbative QCD (PQCD). It is found that these corrections are universal for factorizable amplitudes, {\it i.e.}, at the leading power, and that their threshold resummation smears the end-point singularities from $x\to 0$. The double logarithmic corrections, depending on the topologies of nonfactorizable amplitudes at the subleading power, are negligible due to the color-transparency argument and to the overlap of three meson distribution amplitudes. We show that the PQCD approach to two-body nonleptonic B meson decays respects the factorization assumption in the heavy-quark limit.

Leading-power contributions to $B\toπ,ρ$ transition form factors

We calculate the $B\toπ,ρ$ transition form factors in the framework of perturbative QCD to leading power of $1/M_B$, $M_B$ being the $B$ meson mass. We explain the basic principle by discussing the pion electromagnetic form factor. Perturbative QCD analysis of $B \to ϕK$ decays and Power counting

We investigate exclusive nonleptonic $B$ meson decays $B\toϕK$ in perturbative QCD formalism. It is shown that the end-point (logarithmic and linear) singularities in decay amplitudes do not exist, after $k_T$ and threshold resummations are included. Power counting for emission and annihilation topologies of diagrams, including both factorizable and nonfactorizable ones, is discussed with Sudakov effects taken into account. Our predictions for the branching ratios $B(B\toϕK)\sim 10 \times 10^{-6}$ are larger than those ($\sim 4 \times 10^{-6}$) from the factorization approach because of dynamical enhancement of penguin contributions. Whether this enhancement is essential for penguin-dominated modes can be justified by experimental data.

Determination of heavy-meson wave functions from B decays

We extract the B, D, and D* meson wave functions from the CLEO data of the decays B -> K*γand B -> D^(*)πin the perturbative QCD framework. In this formalism, various logarithmic corrections are organized to give the Wilson evolution from the W boson mass down to the characteristic scale of a decay process, which is of order of the b quark mass, and the Sudakov evolution from the characteristic scale to a lower factorization scale of order Lambda_{QCD}. With large logarithms organized, the b quark decay amplitudes are evaluated reliably in perturbation theory. Below the factorization scale, QCD dynamics is regarded as being nonperturbative, and absorbed into meson wave functions. Because of their universality, the heavy-meson wave functions determined in this work, can be employed to make predictions of other decay modes. We also observe that the dependence of heavy meson wave functions on intrinsic parton transverse momenta plays an important role in the explanation of data.

Effects of threshold resummation

We investigate effects of threshold resummation of logarithmic corrections $\ln N$ in Mellin space quantitatively. Threshold resummation leads to enhancement of next-to-leading-order QCD predictions for jet production at large jet transverse energy, which is in the trend indicated by experimental data. We show that this enhancement is completely determined by the behavior of threshold resummation at small $N$, the region where hierachy among different powers of $\ln N$ is lost and current next-to-leading-logarithm resummation is not reliable. Our analysis indicates that more accurate threshold resummation formalism should be developed in order to obtain convincing predictions.

New unified evolution equation

We propose a new unified evolution equation for parton distribution functions appropriate for both large and small Bjorken variables $x$, which is an improved version of the Ciafaloni-Catani-Fiorani-Marchesini equation. In this new equation the cancellation of soft divergences between virtual and real gluon emissions is explicit without introducing infrared cutoffs, next-to-leading contributions to the Sudakov resummation can be included systematically. It is shown that the new equation reduces to the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi equation at large $x$, to the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) equation at small $x$, and to the modified BFKL equations with a dependence on momentum transfer $Q$ and with unitarity, if hard virtual gluon contributions and correction to strong rapidity ordering are retained, respectively.

Perturbative QCD study of the B-> K^* gamma decay

We apply the perturbative QCD factorization theorem developed recently for nonleptonic heavy meson decays to the radiative decay $B\to K^*γ$. In this formalism the evolution of the Wilson coefficients from the $W$ boson mass down to the characteristic scale of the decay process is governed by the effective weak Hamiltonian. The evolution from the characteristic scale to a lower hadronic scale is formulated by the Sudakov resummation. Besides computing the dominant contribution arising from the magnetic-penguin operator $O_7$, we also calculate the contributions of four-quark operators. Soft Gluons in Logarithmic Summations

We demonstrate that all the known single- and double-logarithm summations for a parton distribution function can be unified in the Collins-Soper resummation technique by applying soft approximations appropriate in different kinematic regions to real gluon emissions. Neglecting the gluon longitudinal momentum, we obtain the $k_T$ (double-logarithm) resummation for two-scale QCD processes, and the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (single-logarithm) equation for one-scale processes. Neglecting the transverse momentum, we obtain the threshold (double-logarithm) resummation for two-scale processes, and the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (single-logarithm) equation for one-scale processes. If keeping the longitudinal and transverse momenta simultaneously, we derive a unified resummation for large Bjorken variable $x$, and a unified evolution equation appropriate for both intermediate and small $x$.

Exclusive Processes at Intermediate Energy, Quark-Hadron Duality and the Transition to Perturbative QCD

Experiments at CEBAF will scan the intermediate-energy region of the QCD dynamics for the nucleon form factors and for Compton Scattering. These experiments will definitely clarify the role of resummed perturbation theory and of quark-hadron duality (QCD sum rules) in this regime. With this perspective in mind, we review the factorization theorem of perturbative QCD for exclusive processes at intermediate energy scales, which embodies the transverse degrees of freedom of a parton and the Sudakov resummation of the corresponding large logarithms. We concentrate on the pion and proton electromagnetic form factors and on pion Compton scattering. New ingredients, such as the evolution of the pion wave function and the complete two-loop expression of the Sudakov factor, are included. The sensitivity of our predictions to the infrared cutoff for the Sudakov evolution is discussed. We also elaborate on QCD sum rule methods for Compton Scattering, which provide an alternative description of this process. We show that, by comparing the local duality analysis to resummed perturbation theory, it is possible to describe the transition of exclusive processes to perturbative QCD.

PQCD study of the $B_{SL}$ and $n_c$ controversy in inclusive $B$ decays

We calculate the semileptonic branching ratio and the charm counting of inclusive $B$ meson decays using the perturbative QCD formalism. For the nonleptonic decays, we employ the modified factorization theorem, in which Wilson coefficients evolve with the characteristic scales of the decay modes. It is found that the decay rate of the single-charm mode $b\to c{\bar u}d$ is enhanced, and a lower $B_{SL}$ is obtained without increasing $n_c$. We predict a larger $b\to c τ\barν$ branching ratio compared to that from the conventional heavy-quark-effective-theory based operator product expansion. Our result of the $B$ meson lifetime is also consistent with the data.

Small-x evolution with Q dependence and unitarity

We propose a modified Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov equation from the viewpoint of the resummation technique, which contains an intrinsic dependence on momentum transfer Q, and satisfies the unitarity bound. The idea is to relax the strong rapidity ordering and to restrict phase space for real gluon emissions in the evaluation of the BFKL kernel. It is shown that the power-law rise of the gluon distribution function with the small Bjorken variable x turns into a logarithmic rise, and that the predictions for the proton structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ are consistent with the HERA data.

PQCD analysis of inclusive semileptonic decays of B mesons

We develop the perturbative QCD formalism for inclusive semileptonic $B$ meson decays, which includes Sudakov suppression from the resummation of large radiative corrections near the high end of charged lepton energy. Transverse degrees of freedom of partons are introduced to facilitate the factorization of $B$ meson decays. Ambiguities appearing in the quark-level analysis are then avoided. A universal distribution function, arising from the nonperturbative Fermi motion of the $b$ quark, is constructed according to the heavy quark effective field theory based operator product expansion, through which the mean and the width of the distribution function are related to hadronic matrix elements of local operators. Charged lepton spectra of the $B\to X_u\ellν$ decay are presented. We find 50\% suppression near the end point of the spectrum. The overall suppression on the total decay rate is 8\% for the free quark model, and is less than 7\% for the use of smooth distribution functions. With our predictions, it is then possible to extract the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ from experimental data. We also discuss possible implications of our analysis when confronted with the rather small observed semileptonic branching ratio in $B$ meson decays.

The Transition to Perturbative QCD in Compton Scattering

We investigate the transition to perturbative QCD in Compton processes, by concentrating on the specific reactions $πγ\to πγ$ and pion photoproduction at moderate energy scales. New sum rules for each of the helicities involved in the scattering and the cross section are given, together with a detailed stability analysis. Our results are then compared with those derived from higher-power factorization, incorporating Sudakov suppression for quark elastic scattering. An overlap of predictions obtained by the two approaches is observed at a momentum transfer as low as 4 GeV$^2$ and at a photon scattering angle around 40$^o$. Our work shows that factorization theorems and sum rule methods complement each other in the description of Compton scattering at moderate energy scales, and give information on the transition to perturbative QCD in these processes. The sum rule formalism is further applied to the crossed reaction $γγ\to π^+ π^-$, and is in very good agreement with the experimental data."

QCD Sum Rule and Perturbative QCD Approaches to Pion Compton Scattering

We compare two approaches to the description of pion Compton scattering at moderate momentum transfer, one being based on local duality QCD sum rules for the invariant amplitudes of the process, which have been derived recently, and the other on the modified factorization formula with Sudakov effects included. We find that perturbative QCD predictions are dominant over those from QCD sum rules only for the scattering angle greater than 90$^o$.
