Constrained Optimization Involving Nonconvex $\ell_p$ Norms: Optimality Conditions, Algorithm and Convergence

This paper investigates the optimality conditions for characterizing the local minimizers of the constrained optimization problems involving an $\ell_p$ norm ($0<p<1$) of the variables, which may appear in either the objective or the constraint. This kind of problems have strong applicability to a wide range of areas since usually the $\ell_p$ norm can promote sparse solutions. However, the nonsmooth and non-Lipschtiz nature of the $\ell_p$ norm often cause these problems difficult to analyze and solve. We provide the calculation of the subgradients of the $\ell_p$ norm and the normal cones of the $\ell_p$ ball. For both problems, we derive the first-order necessary conditions under various constraint qualifications. We also derive the sequential optimality conditions for both problems and study the conditions under which these conditions imply the first-order necessary conditions. We point out that the sequential optimality conditions can be easily satisfied for iteratively reweighted algorithms and show that the global convergence can be easily derived using sequential optimality conditions.

Video Super Resolution Based on Deep Learning: A Comprehensive Survey

In recent years, deep learning has made great progress in many fields such as image recognition, natural language processing, speech recognition and video super-resolution. In this survey, we comprehensively investigate 33 state-of-the-art video super-resolution (VSR) methods based on deep learning. It is well known that the leverage of information within video frames is important for video super-resolution. Thus we propose a taxonomy and classify the methods into six sub-categories according to the ways of utilizing inter-frame information. Moreover, the architectures and implementation details of all the methods are depicted in detail. Finally, we summarize and compare the performance of the representative VSR method on some benchmark datasets. We also discuss some challenges, which need to be further addressed by researchers in the community of VSR. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first systematic review on VSR tasks, and it is expected to make a contribution to the development of recent studies in this area and potentially deepen our understanding to the VSR techniques based on deep learning.

A Single Frame and Multi-Frame Joint Network for 360-degree Panorama Video Super-Resolution

Spherical videos, also known as \ang{360} (panorama) videos, can be viewed with various virtual reality devices such as computers and head-mounted displays. They attract large amount of interest since awesome immersion can be experienced when watching spherical videos. However, capturing, storing and transmitting high-resolution spherical videos are extremely expensive. In this paper, we propose a novel single frame and multi-frame joint network (SMFN) for recovering high-resolution spherical videos from low-resolution inputs. To take advantage of pixel-level inter-frame consistency, deformable convolutions are used to eliminate the motion difference between feature maps of the target frame and its neighboring frames. A mixed attention mechanism is devised to enhance the feature representation capability. The dual learning strategy is exerted to constrain the space of solution so that a better solution can be found. A novel loss function based on the weighted mean square error is proposed to emphasize on the super-resolution of the equatorial regions. This is the first attempt to settle the super-resolution of spherical videos, and we collect a novel dataset from the Internet, MiG Panorama Video, which includes 204 videos. Experimental results on 4 representative video clips demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method. The dataset and code are available at https://github.com/lovepiano/SMFN_For_360VSR.

Polarimetric Hierarchical Semantic Model and Scattering Mechanism Based PolSAR Image Classification

For polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) image classification, it is a challenge to classify the aggregated terrain types, such as the urban area, into semantic homogenous regions due to sharp bright-dark variations in intensity. The aggregated terrain type is formulated by the similar ground objects aggregated together. In this paper, a polarimetric hierarchical semantic model (PHSM) is firstly proposed to overcome this disadvantage based on the constructions of a primal-level and a middle-level semantic. The primal-level semantic is a polarimetric sketch map which consists of sketch segments as the sparse representation of a PolSAR image. The middle-level semantic is a region map which can extract semantic homogenous regions from the sketch map by exploiting the topological structure of sketch segments. Mapping the region map to the PolSAR image, a complex PolSAR scene is partitioned into aggregated, structural and homogenous pixel-level subspaces with the characteristics of relatively coherent terrain types in each subspace. Then, according to the characteristics of three subspaces above, three specific methods are adopted, and furthermore polarimetric information is exploited to improve the segmentation result. Experimental results on PolSAR data sets with different bands and sensors demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to the state-of-the-art methods in region homogeneity and edge preservation for terrain classification.

A Large Family of Multi-path Dual Congestion Control Algorithms

The goal of traffic management is efficiently utilizing network resources via adapting of source sending rates and routes selection. Traditionally, this problem is formulated into a utilization maximization problem. The single-path routing scheme fails to react to instantaneous network congestion. Multi-path routing schemes thus have been proposed aiming at improving network efficiency. Unfortunately, the natural optimization problem to consider is concave but not strictly concave. It thus brings a huge challenge to design stable multi-path congestion control algorithms. In this paper, we propose a generalized multi-path utility maximization model to consider the problem of routes selection and flow control, and derive a family of multi-path dual congestion control algorithms. We show that the proposed algorithms are stable in the absence of delays. We also derive decentralized and scalable sufficient conditions for a particular scheme when propagation delays exist in networks. Simulations are implemented using both Matlab and NS2, on which evaluation of the proposed multi-path dual algorithms is exerted. The comparison results, between the proposed algorithms and the other two existing algorithms, show that the proposed multi-path dual algorithms with appropriate parameter settings can achieve a stable aggregated throughput while maintaining fairness among the involved users.

One More Weight is Enough: Toward the Optimal Traffic Engineering with OSPF

Traffic Engineering (TE) leverages information of network traffic to generate a routing scheme optimizing the traffic distribution so as to advance network performance. However, optimize the link weights for OSPF to the offered traffic is an known NP-hard problem. In this paper, motivated by the fairness concept of congestion control, we firstly propose a new generic objective function, where various interests of providers can be extracted with different parameter settings. And then, we model the optimal TE as the utility maximization of multi-commodity flows with the generic objective function and theoretically show that any given set of optimal routes corresponding to a particular objective function can be converted to shortest paths with respect to a set of positive link weights. This can be directly configured on OSPF-based protocols. On these bases, we employ the Network Entropy Maximization(NEM) framework and develop a new OSPF-based routing protocol, SPEF, to realize a flexible way to split traffic over shortest paths in a distributed fashion. Actually, comparing to OSPF, SPEF only needs one more weight for each link and provably achieves optimal TE. Numerical experiments have been done to compare SPEF with the current version of OSPF, showing the effectiveness of SPEF in terms of link utilization and network load distribution.
