Valence-selective local atomic structures on a YbInCu4 valence transition material by x-ray fluorescence holography

An experimental technique of x-ray fluorescence holography for investigating valence-selective local structures was established by employing the incident x-ray energy at a characteristic one near an x-ray absorption edge, and it was adopted to discriminate environments around Yb2+ and Yb3+ ions in a YbInCu4 valence transition material below and above the transition temperature of 42 K. The reconstructed images of the neighboring atoms around Yb3+ show a fcc structure as observed by diffraction experiments, whereas those around Yb2+ have curious cross (+) features, indicating a positional shift of the centered Yb2+ ions from the fcc lattice point.

Electronic Structure of the Kitaev Material $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ Probed by Photoemission and Inverse Photoemission Spectroscopies

Recently, $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ has attracted much attention as a possible material realization of the honeycomb Kitaev model, which may stabilize a quantum-spin-liquid state. Compared to extensive studies on its magnetic properties, there is still a lack of understanding on its electronic structure, which is strongly related with its Kitaev physics. Here, the electronic structure of $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ is investigated by photoemission (PE) and inverse photoemission (IPE) spectroscopies. The band gap, directly measured from PE/IPE spectra, is found to be 1.9 eV, much larger than previous estimations. The LDA calculations show that the on-site Coulomb interaction $\textit{U}$ can open the band gap without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). However, the SOC should also be incorporated to reproduce the proper gap size, indicating that the interplay between $\textit{U}$ and SOC plays an essential role in the physics of $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$. There exist some spectral features in PE/IPE spectra which cannot be explained by the LDA calculations. To explain such discrepancies, we perform the configuration-interaction calculations for a ${\textrm{RuCl}}_6^{3-}$ cluster. The experimental data and calculations demonstrate that the 4$\textit{d}$ compound $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ is a $J_{\textrm{eff}}$ = 1/2 Mott insulator rather than a quasimolecular-orbital insulator. Our study also provides important physical parameters, required in verifying the proposed Kitaev physics in $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$.

Mirror Symmetry and the Web of Landau-Ginzburg String Vacua

We present some mathematical aspects of Landau-Ginzburg string vacua in terms of toric geometry. The one-to-one correspondence between toric divisors and some of (-1,1) states in Landau-Ginzburg model is presented for superpotentials of typical types. The Landau-Ginzburg interpretation of non-toric divisors is also presented. Using this interpretation, we propose a method to solve the so-called "twisted sector problem" by orbifold construction. Moreover, this construction shows that the moduli spaces of the original Landau-Ginzburg string vacua and their orbifolds are connected. By considering the mirror map of Landau-Ginzburg models, we obtain the relation between Mori vectors and the twist operators of our orbifoldization. This consideration enables us to argue the embedding of the Seiberg-Witten curve in the defining equation of the Calabi-Yau manifoulds on which the type II string gets compactified. Related topics concerning the Calabi-Yau fourfolds and the extremal transition are discussed.
