Adversarial Training Makes Weight Loss Landscape Sharper in Logistic Regression

Adversarial training is actively studied for learning robust models against adversarial examples. A recent study finds that adversarially trained models degenerate generalization performance on adversarial examples when their weight loss landscape, which is loss changes with respect to weights, is sharp. Unfortunately, it has been experimentally shown that adversarial training sharpens the weight loss landscape, but this phenomenon has not been theoretically clarified. Therefore, we theoretically analyze this phenomenon in this paper. As a first step, this paper proves that adversarial training with the L2 norm constraints sharpens the weight loss landscape in the linear logistic regression model. Our analysis reveals that the sharpness of the weight loss landscape is caused by the noise aligned in the direction of increasing the loss, which is used in adversarial training. We theoretically and experimentally confirm that the weight loss landscape becomes sharper as the magnitude of the noise of adversarial training increases in the linear logistic regression model. Moreover, we experimentally confirm the same phenomena in ResNet18 with softmax as a more general case.

Spectrally resolved detection in transient-reflectivity measurements of coherent optical phonons in diamond

Coherent optical phonons in bulk solid system play a crucial role in understanding and designing light-matter interactions and can be detected by the transient-reflectivity measurement. In this paper, we demonstrate spectrally resolved detection of coherent optical phonons in diamond from ultrashort infrared pump-probe measurements using optical band-pass filters. We show that this enhances the sensitivity approximately 35 times in measuring the coherent oscillations in the transient reflectivity compared with the commonly used spectrally integrated measurement. To explain this observation, we discuss its mechanism.

Recurrence of the Brownian motion in multidimensional semi-selfsimilar environments and Gaussian environments

Asymptotic behavior of the one-dimensional Brownian motion in general random environments has been investigated by many researchers. However, many of the methods used in the argument are available only for the one-dimensional case. In this paper the multidimensional case of the problem is considered, and we obtain some sufficient conditions for recurrence of the multi-dimensional Brownian motion in random environments. By using the sufficient conditions we show that the recurrence of the Brownian motion in Gaussian environments under some conditions on the correlation functions.

Reversible phase transition in laser-shocked 3Y-TZP ceramics observed via nanosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction

The high-pressure phase stability of the metastable tetragonal zirconia is still under debate. The transition dynamics of shocked Y2O3 (3 mol%) stabilized tetragonal zirconia ceramics under laser-shock compression has been directly studied using nanosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction. The martensitic phase transformation to the monoclinic phase, which is the stable phase for pure zirconia at ambient pressure and room temperature, has been observed during compression at 5 GPa within 20 ns without any intermediates. This monoclinic phase reverts back to the tetragonal phase during pressure release. The results imply that the stabilization effect due to addition of Y2O3 is negated by the shear stress under compression.
