Generalized Bishop frames on curves on E^4

We introduce and study generalized Bishop frames on regular curves, which are generalizations of the Frenet and Bishop frames for regular curves on higher dimensional spaces. There are four types of generalized Bishop frames on regular curves on $\mathbb{E}^{4}$ up to the change of the order of vectors fixing the first one which is the tangent vector. One of these four types of frames is a Bishop frame, and by a result of Bishop, every regular curve admits such a frame. We show that if a regular curve $γ$ on $\mathbb{E}^{4}$ admits a Frenet frame, then $γ$ admits all four types of generalized Bishop frames. We also show that if the derivative of the tangent vector of a regular curve is nowhere vanishing, then the curve admits all three types of generalized Bishop frames except a frame of type F, which is related to the Frenet frame.

Coarse distinguishability of graphs with symmetric growth

Let $X$ be a connected, locally finite graph with symmetric growth. We prove that there is a vertex coloring $ϕ\colon X\to\{0,1\}$ and some $R\in\mathbb{N}$ such that every automorphism $f$ preserving $ϕ$ is $R$-close to the identity map; this can be seen as a coarse geometric version of symmetry breaking. We also prove that the infinite motion conjecture is true for graphs where at least one vertex stabilizer $S_x$ satisfies the following condition: for every non-identity automorphism $f\in S_x$, there is a sequence $x_n$ such that $\lim d(x_n,f(x_n))=\infty$.

Dehn twist presentations of hyperelliptic periodic diffeomorphisms on closed surfaces

We classify up to conjugacy the group generated by a commuting pair of a periodic diffeomorphism and a hyperelliptic involution on an oriented closed surface. This result can be viewed as a refinement of Ishizaka's result on classification of the mapping classes of hyperelliptic periodic diffeomorphisms. As an application, we obtain the Dehn twist presentations of hyperelliptic periodic mapping classes, which are closely related to the ones obtained by Ishizaka.

Secondary characteristic classes of transversely homogeneous foliations

Let G be a simple Lie group of real rank one, and S the ideal boundary of the corresponding symmetric space of noncompact type (H^n_R, H^n_C, H^n_H or H^2_O). We show the finiteness of the possible values of the secondary characteristic classes of transversely homogeneous foliations on a fixed manifold whose transverse structures are modeled on the G-action on S, except the case where G=SO(n+1,1) for even n. For this exceptional case, we construct examples of foliations on a manifold which break the finiteness and show a weaker form of the finiteness. These are generalizations of a finiteness theorem of secondary characteristic classes of transversely projective foliations on a fixed manifold by Brooks-Goldman and Heitsch to other transverse structures. We also show Bott-Thurston-Heitsch type formulas to compute the Godbillon-Vey classes of certain foliated bundles, and then obtain a rigidity result on transversely homogeneous foliations on the unit tangent sphere bundles of hyperbolic manifolds.

Tenseness of Riemannian flows

We show that any transversally complete Riemannian foliation F of dimension one on any possibly non-compact manifold M is tense; namely, (M,F) admits a Riemannian metric such that the mean curvature form of F is basic. This is a partial generalization of a result of Dominguez, which says that any Riemannian foliation on any compact manifold is tense. Our proof is based on some results of Molino and Sergiescu, and it is simpler than the original proof by Dominguez. As an application, we generalize some well known results including Masa's characterization of tautness.

Continuity of the Alvarez class under deformations

A foliated manifold (M,F) is minimizable if there exists a Riemannian metric g on M such that every leaf of F is a minimal submanifold of (M,g). Alvarez Lopez defined a cohomology class of degree 1 called the Alvarez class of (M,F) whose triviality characterizes the minimizability of (M,F), when M is closed and F is Riemannian. In this paper, we show that the family of the Alvarez classes of a smooth family of Riemannian foliations is continuous with respect to the parameter. Since the Alvarez class has algebraic rigidity under certain topological conditions on (M,F) as the author showed in arXiv:0909.1125, we show that the minimizability of Riemannian foliations is invariant under deformation under the same topological conditions.

Deformation of Sasakian metrics

Deformations of the Reeb flow of a Sasakian manifold as transversely Kähler flows may not admit compatible Sasakian metrics anymore. We show that the triviality of the (0,2)-component of the basic Euler class characterizes the existence of compatible Sasakian metrics for given small deformations of the Reeb flow as transversely holomorphic Riemannian flows. We also prove a Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano type vanishing theorem for basic Dolbeault cohomology of homologically orientable transversely Kähler foliations. As a consequence of these results, we show that any small deformations of the Reeb flow of a positive Sasakian manifold admit compatible Sasakian metrics.

Rigidity of the Álvarez classes of Riemannian foliations with nilpotent structure Lie algebras

We show that if the structure algebra of a Riemannian foliation F on a closed manifold M is nilpotent, then the integral of the Álvarez class of (M,F) along every closed path is the exponential of an algebraic number. By this result and the continuity of the Álvarez class under deformations shown in arXiv:1009.1098v2, we prove that the Álvarez class and the geometrically tautness of Riemannian foliations on a closed manifold M are invariant under deformation, if the fundamental group of M has polynomial growth.

Minimizability of developable Riemannian foliations

Let (M,F) be a closed manifold with a Riemannian foliation. We show that the secondary characteristic classes of the Molino's commuting sheaf of (M,F) vanish if (M,F) is developable and the fundamental group of M is of polynomial growth. By theorems of Álvarez López, our result implies that (M,F) is minimizable under the same conditions. As a corollary, we show that (M,F) is minimizable if F is of codimension 2 and the fundamental group of M is of polynomial growth.
