New Applications and Computations of the Lefschetz Number of Homeomorphisms and Open Maps

We show that the combinatorial Lefschetz number is a topological invariant. This is an important result in itself; in order to point it out, we will also work here several relevant consequences in different directions. The first of them is a significant simplification of the computations involved in obtaining the Lefschetz number of certain maps, as well as some new Lefschetz fixed-point theorems for unbounded spaces. Indeed, these ideas allow us to obtain a clear lower bound for the Nielsen number of a triad in some spaces, such as, for example, the connected sum of two p-tori (p greater than 2). Another consequence, in the case of homeomorphisms, is that, in the classical axiomatic definition of the Lefschetz number, the wedge-of-circles axiom and the cofibration axiom can be replaced by the single axiom of topological invariance of the combinatorial Lefschetz number. Using the invariance of the combinatorial Lefschetz number we also generalize O'Neill's classical result about topological invariance of the fixed-point index and we prove a topological-invariance result for the relative Lefschetz number. We also generalize the combinatorial Lefschetz number from homeomorphisms to open maps and we obtain a new fixed-point theorem.

Limit aperiodic and repetitive colorings of graphs

Let $X$ be a (repetitive) infinite connected simple graph with a finite upper bound $Δ$ on the vertex degrees. The main theorem states that $X$ admits a (repetitive) limit aperiodic vertex coloring by $Δ$ colors. This refines a theorem for finite graphs proved by Collins and Trenk, and by Klavžar, Wong and Zhu, independently. It is also related to a theorem of Gao, Jackson and Seward stating that any countable group has a strongly aperiodic coloring by two colors, and to recent research on distinguishing number of graphs by Lehner, Pilśniak and Stawiski, and by Hüning et al. In our theorem, the number of colors is optimal for general graphs of bounded degree. We derive similar results for edge colorings, and for more general graphs, as well as a construction of limit aperiodic and repetitive tilings by finitely many prototiles. In a subsequent paper, this result is also used to improve the construction of compact foliated spaces with a prescribed leaf.

A universal Riemannian foliated space

It is proved that the isometry classes of pointed connected complete Riemannian $n$-manifolds form a Polish space, $\mathcal{M}_*^\infty(n)$, with the topology described by the $C^\infty$ convergence of manifolds. This space has a canonical partition into sets defined by varying the distinguished point into each manifold. The locally non-periodic manifolds define an open dense subspace $\mathcal{M}_{*,\text{lnp}}^\infty(n)\subset\mathcal{M}_*^\infty(n)$, which becomes a $C^\infty$ foliated space with the restriction of the canonical partition. Its leaves without holonomy form the subspace $\mathcal{M}_{*,\text{np}}^\infty(n)\subset\mathcal{M}_{*,\text{lnp}}^\infty(n)$ defined by the non-periodic manifolds. Moreover the leaves have a natural Riemannian structure so that $\mathcal{M}_{*,\text{lnp}}^\infty(n)$ becomes a Riemannian foliated space, which is universal among all sequential Riemannian foliated spaces satisfying certain property called covering-continuity. $\mathcal{M}_{*,\text{lnp}}^\infty(n)$ is used to characterize the realization of complete connected Riemannian manifolds as dense leaves of covering-continuous compact sequential Riemannian foliated spaces.

Topological Molino's theory

Molino's description of Riemannian foliations on compact manifolds is generalized to the setting of compact equicontinuous foliated spaces, in the case where the leaves are dense. In particular, a structural local group is associated to such a foliated space. As an application, we obtain a partial generalization of results by Carrière and Breuillard-Gelander, relating the structural local group to the growth of the leaves.

Secondary characteristic classes of transversely homogeneous foliations

Let G be a simple Lie group of real rank one, and S the ideal boundary of the corresponding symmetric space of noncompact type (H^n_R, H^n_C, H^n_H or H^2_O). We show the finiteness of the possible values of the secondary characteristic classes of transversely homogeneous foliations on a fixed manifold whose transverse structures are modeled on the G-action on S, except the case where G=SO(n+1,1) for even n. For this exceptional case, we construct examples of foliations on a manifold which break the finiteness and show a weaker form of the finiteness. These are generalizations of a finiteness theorem of secondary characteristic classes of transversely projective foliations on a fixed manifold by Brooks-Goldman and Heitsch to other transverse structures. We also show Bott-Thurston-Heitsch type formulas to compute the Godbillon-Vey classes of certain foliated bundles, and then obtain a rigidity result on transversely homogeneous foliations on the unit tangent sphere bundles of hyperbolic manifolds.

Riemannian foliations of bounded geometry

Continuing the study of bounded geometry for Riemannian foliations, begun by Sanguiao, we introduce a chart-free definition of this concept. Our main theorem states that it is equivalent to a condition involving certain normal foliation charts. For this type of charts, it is also shown that the derivatives of the changes of coordinates are uniformly bounded, and there are nice partitions of unity. Applications to a trace formula for foliated flows will given in a forthcoming paper.

Morphisms between complete Riemannian pseudogroups

We introduce the concept of morphism of pseudogroups generalizing the étalé morphisms of Haefliger. With our definition, any continuous foliated map induces a morphism between the corresponding holonomy pseudogroups. The main theorem states that any morphism between complete Riemannian pseudogroups is complete, has a closure and its maps are \cinf\ along the orbit closures. Here, completeness and closure are versions for morphisms of concepts introduced by Haefliger for pseudogroups. This result is applied to approximate foliated maps by smooth ones in the case of transversely complete Riemannian foliations, yielding the foliated homotopy invariance of their spectral sequence. This generalizes the topological invariance of their basic cohomology, shown by El Kacimi-Nicolau. A different proof of the spectral sequence invariance was also given by the second author.

On the first secondary invariant of Molino's central sheaf

For a Riemannian foliation on a closed manifold, the first secondary invariant of Molino's central sheaf is an obstruction to tautness. Another obstruction is the class defined by the basic component of the mean curvature with respect to some metric. Both obstructions are proved to be the same up to a constant, and other geometric properties are also proved to be equivalent to tautness.
