Magnetic generation and switching of topological quantum phases in a trivial semimetal $α{\mathrm{-EuP}}_3$

Topological materials have drawn increasing attention owing to their rich quantum properties, as highlighted by a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in Weyl and nodal-line semimetals. However, the practical applications for topological electronics have been hampered by the difficulty in the external control of the band topology. Here we demonstrate a magnetic-field-induced switching of band topology in $α{\mathrm{-EuP}}_3$, a magnetic semimetal with a layered crystal structure derived from black phosphorus. When the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the single mirror plane of the monoclinic structure, a giant AHE signal abruptly emerges at a certain threshold magnetization value, giving rise to a prominently large anomalous Hall angle of $\left|Θ_{\mathrm{AHE}}\right| \sim 20^{\circ}$. When the magnetic field is applied along the inter-layer direction, which breaks the mirror symmetry, the system shows a pronounced negative longitudinal magnetoresistance. On the basis of electronic structure calculations and symmetry considerations, these anomalous magneto-transport properties can be considered as manifestations of two distinct topological phases: topological nodal-line and Weyl semimetals, respectively. Notably, the nodal-line structure is composed of bands with the same spin character and spans a wide energy range around the Fermi level. These topological phases are stabilized via the exchange coupling between localized Eu-4$f$ moments and mobile carriers conducting through the phosphorus layers. Our findings provide a realistic solution for external manipulation of band topology, enriching the functional aspects of topological materials.

Spin-orbit-derived giant magnetoresistance in a layered magnetic semiconductor AgCrSe2

Two-dimensional magnetic materials have recently attracted great interest due to their unique functions as the electric field control of a magnetic phase and the anomalous spin Hall effect. For such remarkable functions, a spin-orbit coupling (SOC) serves as an essential ingredient. Here we report a giant positive magnetoresistance in a layered magnetic semiconductor AgCrSe2, which is a manifestation of the subtle combination of the SOC and Zeeman-type spin splitting. When the carrier concentration approaches the critical value of 2.5\times10^18 cm^-3, a sizable positive magnetoresistance of ~400 % emerges upon the application of magnetic fields normal to the conducting layers. Based on the magneto-Seebeck effect and the first-principles calculations, the unconventional magnetoresistance is ascribable to the enhancement of effective carrier mass in the SOC induced J = 3/2 state, which is tuned to the Fermi level through the Zeeman splitting enhanced by the p-d coupling. This study demonstrates a new aspect of the SOC-derived magnetotransport in two-dimensional magnetic semiconductors, paving the way to novel spintronic functions.

Complete phase diagram of Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$FeO$_3$ with versatile magnetic and charge ordering

A detailed electronic phase diagram of perovskite-type oxides Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$FeO$_3$ $(0\leq x \leq 0.5)$ was established by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, magnetization, and transport measurements for polycrystalline samples synthesized by a high-pressure technique. Among three kinds of helimagnetic phases in SrFeO$_3$ at zero field, two of them showing multiple-${\it q}$ helimagnetic spin textures tend to rapidly disappear in cubic symmetry upon the La substitution with $x$ less than 0.1, which accompanies the loss of metallic nature. On the other hand, the third helimagnetic phase apparently remains robustly in Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$FeO$_3$ with $x$ higher than 0.1, followed by merging to the spin/charge ordered phase with $x\sim 1/3$. We propose an important role of itinerant ligand holes on the emergence of multiple-${\it q}$ states and a possible link between the third (putative single-${\it q}$) helimagnetic phase in SrFeO$_3$ and the spin/charge ordered phase in Sr$_{2/3}$La$_{1/3}$FeO$_3$.

Intrinsic effects of substitution and intercalation on thermal transport in two-dimensional TiS$_2$ single crystals

The promising thermoelectric material TiS$_2$ can be easily chemically doped and intercalated. We present here studies of single crystals that are intercalated with excess Ti or Co, or substituted with Ta. We demonstrate the intrinsic impact of these dopants on the thermal transport in the absence of grain boundary scattering. We show that Ta doping has the greatest impact on the thermal scattering rate per ion added, leading to a five-fold reduction in the lattice thermal conductivity as compared to stoichiometric single crystals.

Studies of Impurity-Doping Effects and NMR Measurement5s of La1111 and/or Nd 1111 Fe-Pnictide Superconductors

Measurements of the electrical resistivities, Hall coefficients, thermoelectric powers, electronic specific heat coefficients have been carried out for samples of LnFe1-yMyAsO1-xFx (Ln=La, Nd; M=Co, Mn; x=0.11) obtained by M atom dopings to the superconducting LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln1111) system. The NMR longitudinal relaxation rates 1/T1 have also been measured for samples of LaFe1-yCoyAsO1-xFx with various x values. Co atoms doped to the superconducting LnFeAsO1-xFx are nonmagnetic, and the Tc-suppression by the Co atoms has been found to be too weak to understand by the pair breaking effect expected for the S+- superconducting symmetry proposed as the most probable one for the system. It throws a serious doubt whether the symmetry is realized in this system. Instead of the pair breaking, two mechanisms of the Tc-suppression by the doped impurities have been found: One is the electron localization, which appears when the sheet resistance exceeds h/4e2=6.45 kohm, and another is the disappearance or reduction of the hole-Fermi-surfaces around the gamma point in the reciprocal space. The latter mechanism has been observed, when the electron number increases with increasing Co-doping level and the system changes from an anomalous metal to an ordinary one. On the two distinct T dependences of 1/T1 of LaFeAsO1-xFx, 1/T1 T6 reported by our group in the T region from Tc to ~0.4 Tc for samples with the highest Tc values with varying x, and 1/T1 T2.5-3.0 observed by many groups in the almost entire T region studied below Tc, we discuss what the origin of the difference is, and show that, at least, the T2.5-3.0-like dependence of 1/T1 cannot be considered as the experimental evidence for the S+- symmetry of the order parameter.
