Dark matter scattering cross section and dynamics in dark Yang-Mills theory

We calculate for the first time the scattering cross section between lightest glueballs in $SU(2)$ pure Yang-Mills theory, which are good candidates of dark matter. In the first step, we evaluate the interglueball potential on lattice using the HAL QCD method, with several lattice spacings ($β= 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4$, and 2.5). The systematics associated with nonzero angular momentum effect is removed by subtracting the centrifugal force. The statistical accuracy is improved by employing the cluster-decomposition error reduction technique and by using all space-time symmetries. We then determine the low energy glueball effective Lagrangian and the scattering cross section at low energy, which is compared with the observational constraint on the dark matter self-scattering. We derive the lower bound on the scale parameter of the $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory, as $Λ> 60$ MeV.

Glueball scattering cross section in lattice SU(2) Yang-Mills theory

We calculate the scattering cross section between two $0^{++}$ glueballs in $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills theory on lattice at $β= 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4$, and 2.5 using the indirect (HAL QCD) method. We employ the cluster-decomposition error reduction technique and use all space-time symmetries to improve the signal. In the use of the HAL QCD method, the centrifugal force was subtracted to remove the systematic effect due to nonzero angular momenta of lattice discretization. From the extracted interglueball potential we determine the low energy glueball effective theory by matching with the one-glueball exchange process. We then calculate the scattering phase shift, and derive the relation between the interglueball cross section and the scale parameter $Λ$ as $σ_{ϕϕ} = (2 - 51) Λ^{-2}$ (stat.+sys.). From the observational constraints of galactic collisions, we obtain the lower bound of the scale parameter, as $Λ> 60$ MeV. We also discuss the naturalness of the Yang-Mills theory as the theory explaining dark matter.

Entropy production from chaoticity in Yang-Mills field theory with use of the Husimi function

We investigate possible entropy production in Yang-Mills (YM) field theory by using a quantum distribution function called Husimi function $f_{\rm H}(A, E, t)$ for YM field, which is given by a coarse graining of Wigner function and non-negative. We calculate the Husimi-Wehrl (HW) entropy $S_{\rm HW}(t)=-{\rm Tr}f_H \log f_H$ defined as an integral over the phase-space, for which two adaptations of the test-particle method are used combined with Monte-Carlo method. We utilize the semiclassical approximation to obtain the time evolution of the distribution functions of the YM field, which is known to show a chaotic behavior in the classical limit. We also make a simplification of the multi-dimensional phase-space integrals by making a product ansatz for the Husimi function, which is found to give a 10-20 per cent over estimate of the HW entropy for a quantum system with a few degrees of freedom. We show that the quantum YM theory does exhibit the entropy production, and that the entropy production rate agrees with the sum of positive Lyapunov exponents or the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, suggesting that the chaoticity of the classical YM field causes the entropy production in the quantum YM theory.

Entropy production in quantum Yang-Mills mechanics in semi-classical approximation

We discuss thermalization of isolated quantum systems by using the Husimi-Wehrl entropy evaluated in the semiclassical treatment. The Husimi-Wehrl entropy is the Wehrl entropy obtained by using the Husimi function for the phase space distribution. The time evolution of the Husimi function is given by smearing the Wigner function, whose time evolution is obtained in the semiclassical approximation. We show the efficiency and usefullness of this semiclassical treatment in describing entropy production of a couple of quantum mechanical systems, whose classical counter systems are known to be chaotic. We propose two methods to evaluate the time evolution of the Husimi-Wehrl entropy, the test-particle method and the two-step Monte-Carlo method. We demonstrate the characteristics of the two methods by numerical calculations, and show that the simultaneous application of the two methods ensures the reliability of the results of the Husimi-Wehrl entropy at a given time.

Parametric instability of classical Yang-Mills fields in a color magnetic background

We investigate instabilities of classical Yang-Mills fields in a time-dependent spatially homogeneous color magnetic background field in a non-expanding geometry for elucidating the earliest stage dynamics of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The background gauge field configuration considered in this article is spatially homogeneous and temporally periodic, and is alluded by Berges-Scheffler-Schlichting-Sexty (BSSS). We discuss the whole structure of instability bands of fluctuations around the BSSS background gauge field on the basis of Floquet theory, which enables us to discuss the stability in a systematic way. We find various instability bands on the $(p_z, p_T)$-plane. These instability bands are caused by parametric resonance despite the fact that the momentum dependence of the growth rate for $|\mathbf{p}| \leq \sqrt{B}$ is similar to a Nielsen-Olesen instability. Moreover, some of instability bands are found to emerge not only in the low momentum but also in the high momentum region; typically of the order of the saturation momentum as $|\mathbf{p}| \sim \sqrt{B} \sim Q_{\rm s}$.

Study of entropy production in Yang-Mills theory with use of Husimi function

Understanding the thermalization process in a pure quantum system is a challenge in theoretical physics. In this work, we explore possible thermalization mechanism in Yang-Mills(YM) theory by using a positive semi-definite quantum distribution function called a Husimi function which is given by a coarse graining of the Wigner function within the minimum uncertainty. Then entropy is defined in terms of the Husimi function, which is called the Husimi-Wehrl(HW) entropy. We propose two numerical methods to calculate the HW entropy. We find that it is feasible to apply the semi-classical approximation with the use of classical YM equation. It should be noted that the semi-classical approximation is valid in the systems of physical interest including the early stage of heavy-ion collisions. Using a product ansatz for the Husimi function, which is confirmed to reproduce the HW entropy within 20% error (overestimate) for a few-body quantum system, we succeed in a numerical evaluation of HW entropy of YM fields and show that it surely has a finite value and increases in time.

Dark matter in the hidden gauge theory

The cosmological scenario of the dark matter generated in the hidden gauge theory based on the grand unification is discussed. It is found that the stability of the dark matter halo of our Galaxy and the cosmic ray observation constrain, respectively, the dark matter mass and the unification scale between the standard model and the hidden gauge theory sectors. To obtain a phenomenologically consistent thermal evolution, the entropy of the standard model sector needs to be increased. We therefore propose a scenario where the mini-inflation is induced from the potential coupled to the Standard model sector, in particular the Higgs sector. This scenario makes consistent the current dark matter density as well as the baryon-to-photon ratio for the case of pion dark matter. For the glueball or heavy pion of hidden gauge theory, an additional mini-inflation in the standard model sector before the leptogenesis is required. We also propose the possibility to confirm this scenario by known prospective experimental approaches.

Time evolution of gluon coherent state and its von Neumann entropy in heavy-ion collisions

We propose a new prescription for evaluating a von Neumann entropy in the initial stage of high-energy heavy-ion collisions utilizing the time evolution of classical Yang-Mills (CYM) field: The von Neumann entropy is computed for the quantum coherent states constructed so as to give the classical gluon fields as the expectation values. The entropy is to be liberated when the complete decoherence is achieved. As a demonstration, the time evolution of the CYM dynamics is solved with an initial condition which mimics the Glasma state, though in a non-expanding geometry; the Glasma state is characterized by the longitudinal color-electric and -magnetic fields with gluon fields' fluctuations around it. We find that the initial longitudinal fluctuations of the fields play essential roles for the entropy production in two ways: First, the field fluctuations at $t=0$ themselves act as a source of the von Neumann entropy prepared before the time evolution. Second, the initial fluctuations triggers field instabilities, and hence the larger the strength of them, the more the entropy production at later time.

Entropy production in classical Yang-Mills theory from Glasma initial conditions

We study the thermalization process in classical Yang-Mills (CYM) field theory starting from noisy glasma-like initial conditions by investigating the initial-value sensitivity of trajectories. Kunihiro et al. linked entropy generation to the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, which gives the entropy production rate in classical chaotic systems, calculated numerically for CYM fields starting from purely random initial field configurations. In contrast, we here study glasma-like initial conditions. For small random fluctuations we obtain qualitatively similar results while no entropy increase is observed when such fluctuations are absent. We analyze the intermediate time Lyapunov spectrum for several time windows and calculate the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. We find a large number of positive Lyapunov exponents at the early stages of time evolution. Also for later times their number is a sizeable fraction of the total number of degrees of freedom. The spectrum of positive Lyapunov exponents at first changes rapidly, but then stabilizes, indicating that the dynamics of the gauge fields approaches a steady state. Thus we conclude that also for glasma-like initial conditions a significant amount of entropy is produced by classical gluon field dynamics.

Gribov-Zwanziger action in SU(2) Maximally Abelian Gauge with U(1)$_3$ Landau Gauge

We construct the local Gribov-Zwanziger action for SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in the maximally Abelian (MA) gauge with U(1)$_3$ Landau gauge fixing based on the Zwanziger's work in the Landau gauge. By the restriction of the functional integral region to the Gribov region in the MA gauge, we give the nonlocal action. We localize the action with new fields and obtain the action with the shift of the new scalar fields, which has the terms, corresponding to the localized action of the horizon function in the MA gauge. The diagonal gluon propagator in the MA gauge at tree level behaves like the propagator from Gribov-Zwanziger action in the Landau gauge and shows the violation of Kallen-Lehmann representation.

Anomaly-induced charges in baryons

We show that quantum chiral anomaly of QCD in magnetic backgrounds induces a novel structure of electric charge inside baryons. To illustrate the anomaly effect, we employ the Skyrme model for baryons, with the anomaly-induced gauged Wess-Zumino term (π_0 + (multi-pion)) E_i B_i. Due to this term, the Skyrmions giving a local pion condensation ((π_0 + (multi-pion)) \neq 0) necessarily become a local charge source, in the background magnetic field B_i. We present detailed evaluation of the anomaly effects, and calculate the total induced charge, for various baryons in the magnetic field.

Anomaly-induced charges in nucleons

We show a novel charge structure of baryons in electromagnetic field due to the chiral anomaly. A key connection is to treat baryons as solitons of mesons. We use Skyrmions to calculate the charge distributions in a single nucleon and find an additional charge. We also perform calculations of charge distribution for classical multi-baryons with B=2, 3,...,8 and 17; they show amusing charge distributions.

Chiral Magnetic Effect from Q-balls

We apply a generic framework of linear sigma models for revealing a mechanism of the mysterious phenomenon, the chiral magnetic effect, in quark-gluon plasma. An electric current arises along a background magnetic field, which is given rise to by Q-balls (non-topological solitons) of the linear sigma model with axial anomaly. We find additional alternating current due to quark mass terms. The hadronic Q-balls, baby boson stars, may be created in heavy-ion collisions.

Quark-anti-quark potentials from Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes on lattice

Quark--anti-quark (anti-q-q) potentials with finite quark masses are studied from the anti-q-q Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter (NBS) wave functions in quenched lattice QCD. With the use of a method which has been recently developed in the derivation of nuclear forces from lattice QCD, we derive the anti-q-q potentials from the NBS wave functions. We calculate the anti-q-q NBS wave functions in pseudo-scalar and vector channels for several quark masses. The derived potentials at each quark mass in both channels show linear plus Coulomb form. We also discuss the quark-mass and channel dependence of the anti-q-q potentials.

Hadron properties at finite temperature and density with two-flavor Wilson fermions

Meson properties at finite temperature and density are studied in lattice QCD simulations with two-flavor Wilson fermions. For this purpose, we investigate screening masses of mesons in pseudo-scalar (PS) and vector (V) channels. The simulations are performed on $16^3\times 4$ lattice along the lines of constant physics at $m_{\rm PS}/m_{\rm V}|_{T=0}=0.65$ and 0.80, where $m_{\rm PS}/m_{\rm V}|_{T=0}$ is a ratio of meson masses in PS and V channels at $T=0$. A temperature range is $T/T_{\rm pc}=(0.8 - 4.0)$, where $T_{\rm pc}$ is the pseudo-critical temperature. We find that the temperature dependence of the screening masses normalized by temperature, $M_0/T$, shows notable structure around $T_{\rm pc}$, and approach $2π$ at high temperature in both channels, which is consistent with twice the thermal mass of a free quark in high temperature limit. The screening masses at low density are also investigated by using the Taylor expansion method with respect to the quark chemical potential. We find that the expansion coefficients in the leading order become positive in the temperature range, and thermal and density effect on the meson screening-masses becomes apparent in the quark-gluon plasma phase. The meson screening-masses are also compared with the gluon (Debye) screening masses at finite temperature and density.

Lattice QCD Study for Gluon Propagator and Gluon Spectral Function

We study the gluon propagator in the Landau gauge in SU(3) lattice QCD at $β$=5.7, 5.8 and 6.0 at the quenched level. The Euclidean Landau-gauge gluon propagator $D(r)\equiv D_{μμ}^{aa}(x)/24$ is found to be well described by four-dimensional Yukawa-type function $e^{-mr}/r$ in the infrared and intermediate region of $r \equiv (x_μx_μ)^{1/2}$ = 0.1 $\sim$ 1.0fm. The infrared effective gluon mass is obtained as $m \simeq$ 600MeV. Associated with the 4D Yukawa-type gluon propagator, we derive analytical expressions for the zero-spatial-momentum propagator $D_0(t)$, the effective mass $M_{\rm eff}(t)$, and the spectral function $ρ(ω)$ of the gluon field. Remarkably, the obtained gluon spectral function $ρ(ω)$ is almost negative definite, except for a positive $δ$-functional peak at $ω=m$. Since the Yukawa-type propagation indicates a three-dimensional space-time character, we consider a hypothesis of an effective dimensional reduction by generalized Parisi-Sourlas mechanism in a stochastic color-magnetic vacuum of infrared QCD.

We calculate the anti-q--q NBS wave functions in pseudo-scalar and vector channels for several quark masses. The derived potentials in both channels reveal linear confinement plus Coulomb potentials. We also discuss the quark-mass and channel dependence of the anti-q--q potentials.

Lattice QCD Analysis for Gluons

Nonperturbative properties of gluons are studied in SU(3) lattice QCD at the quenched level. The first subject is a functional-form analysis of the gluon propagator $D_{μν}^{ab}(x)$ in the Landau gauge. We find that the gluon propagator $D_{μμ}^{aa}(r)$ obtained in lattice QCD is well described by the four-dimensional (4D) Yukawa-type function $e^{-mr}/r$ with $m \simeq 600$MeV for the Euclidean 4D distance $r = 0.1 \sim 1.0$ fm. In momentum space, the gluon propagator $\tilde D_{μμ}^{aa}(p^2)$ ($p= 0.5 \sim 3$ GeV) is found to be well approximated with a new-type propagator of $(p^2+m^2)^{-3/2}$, which corresponds to 4D Fourier image of the Yukawa-type function. Associated with the Yukawa-type gluon propagator, we derive analytical expressions for the zero-spatial-momentum propagator $D_0(t)$, the effective mass $M_{\rm eff}(t)$, and the spectral function $ρ(ω)$ of the gluon field. The mass parameter $m$ turns out to be the infrared effective mass of gluons. The obtained gluon spectral function $ρ(ω)$ is almost negative-definite for $ω>m$, except for a positive $δ$-functional peak at $ω=m$. The second subject is a lattice-QCD determination of the relevant gluonic momentum-component for color confinement. As a remarkable fact, the string tension is found to be almost unchanged even after cutting off the high-momentum gluon component above 1.5 GeV in the Landau gauge. In fact, the relevant gluonic scale for color confinement is concluded to be below 1.5 GeV.
