Improvements of Plachky-Steinebach theorem

We show that the conclusion of Plachky-Steinebach theorem holds true for intervals of the form $\left]\overline{L}_r'(λ),y\right[$, where $\overline{L}_r'(λ)$ is the right derivative (but not necessarily a derivative) of the generalized log-moment generating function $\overline{L}$ at some $λ> 0$ and $y\in\ \left]\overline{L}_r'(λ),+\infty\right]$, under the only two following conditions: $(a)$ $\overline{L}'_r(λ)$ is a limit point of the set $\left\{\overline{L}'_r(t):t>λ\right\}$, $(b)$ $\overline{L}(t_i)$ is a limit for a suitable sequence $(t_i)$. By replacing $\overline{L}_r'(λ)$ by $\overline{L}_r'(λ^+)$, the above result extends verbatim to the case $λ=0$ (replacing $(a)$ by the right continuity of $\overline{L}$ at zero when $\overline{L}_r'(0^+)=-\infty$). No hypothesis is made on $\overline{L}_{]-\infty,λ[}$ (e.g. $\overline{L}_{]-\infty,λ[}$ may be the constant $+\infty$ when $λ=0$); $λ\ge 0$ may be a non-differentiability point of $\overline{L}$ and moreover a limit point of non-differentiability points of $\overline{L}$; $λ=0$ may be a left and right discontinuity point of $\overline{L}$. The map $\overline{L}_{\mid ]λ,λ+\varepsilon[}$ may fail to be strictly convex for all $\varepsilon>0$. If we drop the assumption $(b)$, then the same conclusion holds with upper limits in place of limits. The foregoing is valid for general nets $(μ_α,c_α)$ of Borel probability measures and powers and replacing the intervals $\left]\overline{L}_r'(λ^+),y\right[$ by $]x_α,y_α[$ or $[x_α,y_α]$, where $(x_α,y_α)$ is any net such that $(x_α)$ converges to $\overline{L}_r'(λ^+)$ and $\liminf_αy_α>\overline{L}_r'(λ^+)$.

Criteria for the density of the graph of the entropy map restricted to ergodic states

We consider a non-uniquely ergodic dynamical system given by a $\mathbb{Z}^{l}$-action (or $(\N\cup\{0\})^l$-action) $τ$ on a non-empty compact metrisable space $Ω$, for some $l\in\N$. Let (D) denote the following property: The graph of the restriction of the entropy map $h^τ$ to the set of ergodic states is dense in the graph of $h^τ$. We assume that $h^τ$ is finite and upper semi-continuous. We give several criteria in order that (D) holds, each of which is stated in terms of a basic notion: Gateaux differentiability of the pressure map $P^τ$ on some sets dense in the space $C(Ω)$ of real-valued continuous functions on $Ω$, level-2 large deviation principle, level-1 large deviation principle, convexity properties of some maps on $\R^n$ for all $n\in\N$. The one involving the Gateaux differentiability of $P^τ$ is of particular relevance in the context of large deviations since it establishes a clear comparison with another well-known sufficient condition: We show that for each non-empty $σ$-compact subset $Σ$ of $C(Ω)$, (D) is equivalent to the existence of an infinite dimensional vector space $V$ dense in $C(Ω)$ such that $f+g$ has a unique equilibrium state for all $(f,g)\in Σ\times V\setminus\{0\}$; any Schauder basis $(f_n)$ of $C(Ω)$ whose linear span contains $Σ$ admits an arbitrary small perturbation $(h_n)$ so that one can take $V=\textnormal{span}(\{f_n+h_n: n\in\N\})$. Taking $Σ=\{0\}$, the existence of an infinite dimensional vector space dense in $C(Ω)$ constituted by functions admitting a unique equilibrium state is equivalent to (D) together with the uniqueness of measure of maximal entropy.

Entropy approximation versus uniqueness of equilibrium for a dense affine space of continuous functions

We show that for a $\mathbb{Z}^{l}$-action (or $(\N\cup\{0\})^l$-action) on a non-empty compact metrizable space $Ω$, the existence of a affine space dense in the set of continuous functions on $Ω$ constituted by elements admitting a unique equilibrium state implies that each invariant measure can be approximated weakly$^*$ and in entropy by a sequence of measures which are unique equilibrium states.

Large deviation principles for non-uniformly hyperbolic rational maps

We show some level-2 large deviation principles for rational maps satisfying a strong form of non-uniform hyperbolicity, called "Topological Collet-Eckmann". More precisely, we prove a large deviation principle for the distribution of iterated preimages, periodic points, and Birkhoff averages. For this purpose we show that each H{ö}lder continuous potential admits a unique equilibrium state, and that the pressure function can be characterized in terms of iterated preimages, periodic points, and Birkhoff averages. Then we use a variant of a general result of Kifer.

Stone-Weierstrass type theorems for large deviations

We give a general version of Bryc's theorem valid on any topological space and with any algebra $\mathcal{A}$ of real-valued continuous functions separating the points, or any well-separating class. In absence of exponential tightness, and when the underlying space is locally compact regular and $\mathcal{A}$ constituted by functions vanishing at infinity, we give a sufficient condition on the functional $Λ(\cdot)_{\mid \mathcal{A}}$ to get large deviations with not necessarily tight rate function. We obtain the general variational form of any rate function on a completely regular space; when either exponential tightness holds or the space is locally compact Hausdorff, we get it in terms of any algebra as above. Prohorov-type theorems are generalized to any space, and when it is locally compact regular the exponential tightness can be replaced by a (strictly weaker) condition on $Λ(\cdot)_{\mid \mathcal{A}}$.

Free-differentiability conditions on the free-energy function implying large deviations

Let $(μ_α)$ be a net of Radon sub-probability measures on the real line, and $(t_α)$ be a net in $]0,+\infty[$ converging to 0. Assuming that the generalized log-moment generating function $L(λ)$ exists for all $λ$ in a nonempty open interval $G$, we give conditions on the left or right derivatives of $L_{\mid G}$, implying vague (and thus narrow when $0\in G$) large deviations. The rate function (which can be nonconvex) is obtained as an abstract Legendre-Fenchel transform. This allows us to strengthen the Gärtner-Ellis theorem by removing the usual differentiability assumption. A related question of R. S. Ellis is solved.
