p-Adic distribution of CM points and Hecke orbits. II: Linnik equidistribution on the supersingular locus

For a prime number $p$, we study the asymptotic distribution of CM points on the moduli space of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{C}_p$. In stark contrast to the complex case, in the $p$-adic setting there are infinitely many different measures describing the asymptotic distribution of CM points. In this paper we identify all of these measures. A key insight is to translate this problem into a $p$-adic version of Linnik's classical problem on the asymptotic distribution of integer points on spheres. To do this translation, we use the close relationship between the deformation theories of elliptic curves and formal modules and then apply results of Gross and Hopkins. We solve this $p$-adic Linnik problem using a deviation estimate extracted from the bounds for the Fourier coefficients of cuspidal modular forms of Deligne, Iwaniec and Duke. We also identify all accumulation measures of an arbitrary Hecke orbit.

p-Adic distribution of CM points and Hecke orbits. I. Convergence towards the Gauss point

We study the asymptotic distribution of CM points on the moduli space of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{C}_p$, as the discriminant of the underlying endomorphism ring varies. In contrast with the complex case, we show that there is no uniform distribution. In this paper we characterize all the sequences of discriminants for which the corresponding CM points converge towards the Gauss point of the Berkovich affine line. We also give an analogous characterization for Hecke orbits. In the companion paper we characterize all the remaining limit measures of CM points and Hecke orbits.

Residue fixed point index and wildly ramified power series

In this paper, we study power series having a fixed point of multiplier 1. First, we give a closed formula for the residue fixed point index, in terms of the first coefficients of the power series. Then, we use this formula to study wildly ramified power series in positive characteristic. Among power series having a multiple fixed point of small multiplicity, we characterize those having the smallest possible lower ramification numbers in terms of the residue fixed point index. Furthermore, we show that these power series form a generic set, and, in the case of convergent power series, we also give an optimal lower bound for the distance to other periodic points.

Generic parabolic points are isolated in positive characteristic

We study analytic germs in one variable having a parabolic fixed point at the origin, over an ultrametric ground field of positive characteristic. It is conjectured that for such a germ the origin is isolated as a periodic point. Our main result is an affirmative solution of this conjecture in the case of a generic germ with a prescribed multiplier. The genericity condition is explicit: That the power series is minimally ramified, i.e., that the degree of the first non-linear term of each of its iterates is as small as possible. Our main technical result is a computation of the first significant terms of a minimally ramified power series. From this we obtain a lower bound for the norm of nonzero periodic points, from which we deduce our main result. As a by-product we give a new and self-contained proof of a characterization of minimally ramified power series in terms of the iterative residue.

Geometric pressure for multimodal maps of the interval

This paper is an interval dynamics counterpart of three theories founded earlier by the authors, S. Smirnov and others in the setting of the iteration of rational maps on the Riemann sphere: the equivalence of several notions of non-uniform hyperbolicity, Geometric Pressure, and Nice Inducing Schemes methods leading to results in thermodynamical formalism. We work in a setting of generalized multimodal maps, that is smooth maps f of a finite union of compact intervals in R into R with non-flat critical points, such that on its maximal forward invariant set K the map f is topologically transitive and has positive topological entropy. We prove that several notions of non-uniform hyperbolicity of f|_K are equivalent (including uniform hyperbolicity on periodic orbits, TCE & all periodic orbits in K hyperbolic repelling, Lyapunov hyperbolicity, and exponential shrinking of pull-backs). We prove that several definitions of geometric pressure P(t), that is pressure for the map f|_K and the potential - t log |f'|, give the same value (including pressure on periodic orbits, "tree" pressure, variational pressures and conformal pressure). Finally we prove that, provided all periodic orbits in K are hyperbolic repelling, the function P(t) is real analytic for t between the "condensation" and "freezing" parameters and that for each such t there exists unique equilibrium (and conformal) measure satisfying strong statistical properties.

Sensitive dependence of Gibbs measures at low temperatures

The Gibbs measures of an interaction can behave chaotically as the temperature drops to zero. We observe that for some classical lattice systems there are interactions exhibiting a related phenomenon of sensitive dependence of Gibbs measures: An arbitrarily small perturbation of the interaction can produce significant changes in the low-temperature behavior of its Gibbs measures. For some one-dimensional XY models we exhibit sensitive dependence of Gibbs measures for a (nearest-neighbor) interaction given by a smooth function, and for perturbations that are small in the smooth category. We also exhibit sensitive dependence of Gibbs measures for an interaction on a classical lattice system with finite-state space. This interaction decreases exponentially as a function of the distance between sites; it is given by a Lipschitz continuous potential in the configuration space. The perturbations are small in the Lipschitz topology. As a by-product we solve some problems stated by Chazottes and Hochman.

The distribution of Galois orbits of points of small height in toric varieties

We address the distribution properties of points of small height on proper toric varieties and applications to the related Bogomolov property. We introduce the notion of monocritical toric metrized divisor and we prove that equidistribution occurs for every generic, small sequence with respect to a toric metrized divisor, for every place if and only if the divisor is monocritical. Furthermore, when this is the case, the limit measure is a translate of the natural measure on the compact torus sitting in the principal orbit of the ambient toric variety. We also study the $v$-adic modulus distribution of Galois orbits of small points. We characterize, in terms of the given toric semipositive metrized divisor, the cluster measures of $v$-adic valuations of Galois orbits of generic small sequences. The Bogomolov property now says that a subvariety of the principal orbit of a proper toric variety that has the same essential minimum than the toric variety with respect to a monocritical toric metrized divisor, must be a translate of a subtorus. We also give several examples, including a non-monocritical divisor for which the Bogomolov property does not hold.

Equilibrium states of weakly hyperbolic one-dimensional maps for Holder potentials

There is a wealth of results in the literature on the thermodynamic formalism for potentials that are, in some sense, "hyperbolic". We show that for a sufficiently regular one-dimensional map satisfying a weak hyperbolicity assumption, every Holder continuous potential is hyperbolic. A sample consequence is the absence of phase transitions: The pressure function is real analytic on the space of Holder continuous functions. Another consequence is that every Holder continuous potential has a unique equilibrium state, and that this measure has exponential decay of correlations.

Low-temperature phase transitions in the quadratic family

We give the first example of a quadratic map having a phase transition after the first zero of the geometric pressure function. This implies that several dimension spectra and large deviation rate functions associated to this map are not (expected to be) real analytic, in contrast to the uniformly hyperbolic case. The quadratic map we study has a non-recurrent critical point, so it is non-uniformly hyperbolic in a strong sense.

A Characterization of hyperbolic potentials of rational maps

Consider a rational map $f$ of degree at least 2 acting on its Julia set $J(f)$, a Hölder continuous potential $ϕ: J(f)\rightarrow \R$ and the pressure $P(f,ϕ). In the case where $\sup_{J(f)}ϕ<P(f,phi)$, the uniqueness and stochastic properties of the corresponding equilibrium states have been extensively studied. In this paper we characterize those potentials $ϕ$ for which this property is satisfied for some iterate of $f$, in terms of the expanding properties of the corresponding equilibrium states. A direct consequence of this result is that for a nonuniformly hyperbolic rational map every Hölder continuous potential has a unique equilibrium state and that this measure is exponentially mixing.

Large deviation principles for non-uniformly hyperbolic rational maps

We show some level-2 large deviation principles for rational maps satisfying a strong form of non-uniform hyperbolicity, called "Topological Collet-Eckmann". More precisely, we prove a large deviation principle for the distribution of iterated preimages, periodic points, and Birkhoff averages. For this purpose we show that each H{ö}lder continuous potential admits a unique equilibrium state, and that the pressure function can be characterized in terms of iterated preimages, periodic points, and Birkhoff averages. Then we use a variant of a general result of Kifer.

Lyapunov spectrum for exceptional rational maps

We study the dimension spectrum for Lyapunov exponents for rational maps acting on the Riemann sphere and characterize it by means of the Legendre-Fenchel transform of the hidden variational pressure. This pressure is defined by means of the variational principle with respect to non-atomic invariant probability measures and is associated to certain $σ$-finite conformal measures. This allows to extend previous results to exceptional rational maps.

Nice inducing schemes and the thermodynamics of rational maps

We consider the thermodynamic formalism of a complex rational map $f$ of degree at least two, viewed as a dynamical system acting on the Riemann sphere. More precisely, for a real parameter $t$ we study the (non-)existence of equilibrium states of $f$ for the potential $-t \ln |f'|$, and the analytic dependence on $t$ of the corresponding pressure function. We give a fairly complete description of the thermodynamic formalism of a rational map that is "expanding away from critical points" and that has arbitrarily small "nice sets" with some additional properties. Our results apply in particular to non-renormalizable polynomials without indifferent periodic points, infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomials with a priori bounds, real quadratic polynomials, topological Collet-Eckmann rational maps, and to backward contracting rational maps. As an application, for these maps we describe the dimension spectrum of Lyapunov exponents, and of pointwise dimensions of the measure of maximal entropy, and obtain some level-1 large deviations results.

The maximal entropy measure detects non-uniform hyperbolicity

We characterize two of the most studied non-uniform hyperbolicity conditions for rational maps, semi-hyperbolicity and the topological Collet-Eckmann condition, in terms of the maximal entropy measure. Using the same tools in the proof of these results we give an extension of a result of Carleson, Jones and Yoccoz, that semi-hyperbolicity characterizes those polynomial maps whose basin of attraction of infinity is a John domain, to rational maps having a completely invariant attracting basin.

Theorie ergodique des fractions rationnelles sur un corps ultrametrique

We make the first steps towards an understanding of the ergodic properties of a rational map defined over a complete algebraically closed non-archimedean field. For such a rational map R, we construct a natural invariant probability measure m_R which reprensents the asymptotic distribution of preimages of non-exceptional point. We show that this measure is exponentially mixing, and satisfies the central limit theorem. We prove some general bounds on the metric entropy of m_R, and on the topological entropy of R. We finally prove that rational maps with vanishing topological entropy have potential good reduction.
