A central limit theorem for the Hellinger loss of Grenander type estimators

We consider Grenander type estimators for a monotone function $λ:[0,1]\to\mathbb{R}$, obtained as the slope of a concave (convex) estimate of the primitive of $λ$. Our main result is a central limit theorem for the Hellinger loss, which applies to statistical models that satisfy the setup in Durot (2007). This includes estimation of a monotone density, for which the limiting variance of the Hellinger loss turns out to be independent of $λ$.

Functional central limit theorems for single-stage samplings designs

For a joint model-based and design-based inference, we establish functional central limit theorems for the Horvitz-Thompson empirical process and the Hájek empirical process centered by their finite population mean as well as by their super-population mean in a survey sampling framework. The results apply to single-stage unequal probability sampling designs and essentially only require conditions on higher order correlations. We apply our main results to a Hadamard differentiable statistical functional and illustrate its limit behavior by means of a computer simulation.

A Kiefer-Wolfowitz type of result in a general setting, with an application to smooth monotone estimation

We consider Grenander type estimators for monotone functions $f$ in a very general setting, which includes estimation of monotone regression curves, monotone densities, and monotone failure rates. These estimators are defined as the left-hand slope of the least concave majorant $\hat{F}_n$ of a naive estimator $F_n$ of the integrated curve $F$ corresponding to $f$. We prove that the supremum distance between $\hat{F}_n$ and $F_n$ is of the order $O_p(n^{-1}\log n)^{2/(4-τ)}$, for some $τ\in[0,4)$ that characterizes the tail probabilities of an approximating process for $F_n$. In typical examples, the approximating process is Gaussian and $τ=1$, in which case the convergence rate is $n^{-2/3}(\log n)^{2/3}$ is in the same spirit as the one obtained by Kiefer and Wolfowitz (1976) for the special case of estimating a decreasing density. We also obtain a similar result for the primitive of $F_n$, in which case $τ=2$, leading to a faster rate $n^{-1}\log n$, also found by Wang and Woodfroofe (2007). As an application in our general setup, we show that a smoothed Grenander type estimator and its derivative are asymptotically equivalent to the ordinary kernel estimator and its derivative in first order.

Shape constrained nonparametric estimators of the baseline distribution in Cox proportional hazards model

We investigate nonparametric estimation of a monotone baseline hazard and a decreasing baseline density within the Cox model. Two estimators of a nondecreasing baseline hazard function are proposed. We derive the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator and consider a Grenander type estimator, defined as the left-hand slope of the greatest convex minorant of the Breslow estimator. We demonstrate that the two estimators are strong consistent and asymptotically equivalent and derive their common limit distribution at a fixed point. Both estimators of a nonincreasing baseline hazard and their asymptotic properties are acquired in a similar manner. Furthermore, we introduce a Grenander type estimator for a nonincreasing baseline density, defined as the left-hand slope of the least concave majorant of an estimator of the baseline cumulative distribution function, derived from the Breslow estimator. We show that this estimator is strong consistent and derive its asymptotic distribution at a fixed point.

Testing equality of functions under monotonicity constraints

We consider the problem of testing equality of functions $f_j:[0,1]\to \mathbb{R}$ for $j=1,2,...,J$ the basis of $J$ independent samples from possibly different distributions under the assumption that the functions are monotone. We provide a uniform approach that covers testing equality of monotone regression curves, equality of monotone densities and equality of monotone hazards in the random censorship model. Two test statistics are proposed based on $L_1$-distances. We show that both statistics are asymptotically normal and we provide bootstrap implementations, which are shown to have critical regions with asymptotic level $α$.

Approximation of rejective sampling inclusion probabilities and application to high order correlations

This paper is devoted to rejective sampling. We provide an expansion of joint inclusion probabilities of any order in terms of the inclusion probabilities of order one, extending previous results by Hájek (1964) and Hájek (1981) and making the remainder term more precise. Following Hájek (1981), the proof is based on Edgeworth expansions. The main result is applied to derive bounds on higher order correlations, which are needed for the consistency and asymptotic normality of several complex estimators.

Central limit theorem and influence function for the MCD estimators at general multivariate distributions

We define the minimum covariance determinant functionals for multivariate location and scatter through trimming functions and establish their existence at any multivariate distribution. We provide a precise characterization including a separating ellipsoid property and prove that the functionals are continuous. Moreover, we establish asymptotic normality for both the location and covariance estimator and derive the influence function. These results are obtained in a very general multivariate setting.

Asymptotic normality of the $L_k$-error of the Grenander estimator

We investigate the limit behavior of the $L_k$-distance between a decreasing density $f$ and its nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator $\hat{f}_n$ for $k\geq1$. Due to the inconsistency of $\hat{f}_n$ at zero, the case $k=2.5$ turns out to be a kind of transition point. We extend asymptotic normality of the $L_1$-distance to the $L_k$-distance for $1\leq k<2.5$, and obtain the analogous limiting result for a modification of the $L_k$-distance for $k\geq2.5$. Since the $L_1$-distance is the area between $f$ and $\hat{f}_n$, which is also the area between the inverse $g$ of $f$ and the more tractable inverse $U_n$ of $\hat{f}_n$, the problem can be reduced immediately to deriving asymptotic normality of the $L_1$-distance between $U_n$ and $g$. Although we lose this easy correspondence for $k>1$, we show that the $L_k$-distance between $f$ and $\hat{f}_n$ is asymptotically equivalent to the $L_k$-distance between $U_n$ and $g$.

The behavior of the NPMLE of a decreasing density near the boundaries of the support

We investigate the behavior of the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator $\hat{f}_n$ for a decreasing density $f$ near the boundaries of the support of $f$. We establish the limiting distribution of $\hat{f}_n(n^{-α})$, where we need to distinguish between different values of $0<α<1$. Similar results are obtained for the upper endpoint of the support, in the case it is finite. This yields consistent estimators for the values of $f$ at the boundaries of the support. The limit distribution of these estimators is established and their performance is compared with the penalized maximum likelihood estimator.
