Global existence of dissipative solutions to the Camassa--Holm equation with transport noise

We consider a nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) that takes the form of the Camassa--Holm equation perturbed by a convective, position-dependent, noise term. We establish the first global-in-time existence result for dissipative weak martingale solutions to this SPDE, with general finite-energy initial data. The solution is obtained as the limit of classical solutions to parabolic SPDEs. The proof combines model-specific statistical estimates with stochastic propagation of compactness techniques, along with the systematic use of tightness and a.s. representations of random variables on specific quasi-Polish spaces. The spatial dependence of the noise function makes more difficult the analysis of a priori estimates and various renormalisations, giving rise to nonlinear terms induced by the martingale part of the equation and the second-order Stratonovich--Itô correction term.

Noise-driven bifurcations in a neural field system modelling networks of grid cells

The activity generated by an ensemble of neurons is affected by various noise sources. It is a well-recognised challenge to understand the effects of noise on the stability of such networks. We demonstrate that the patterns of activity generated by networks of grid cells emerge from the instability of homogeneous activity for small levels of noise. This is carried out by analysing the robustness of network activity patterns with respect to noise in an upscaled noisy grid cell model in the form of a system of partial differential equations. Inhomogeneous network patterns are numerically understood as branches bifurcating from unstable homogeneous states for small noise levels. We show that there is a phase transition occurring as the level of noise decreases. Our numerical study also indicates the presence of hysteresis phenomena close to the precise critical noise value.

On Factorizations of Analytic Operator-Valued Functions and Eigenvalue Multiplicity Questions

We study several natural multiplicity questions that arise in the context of the Birman-Schwinger principle applied to non-self-adjoint operators. In particular, we re-prove (and extend) a recent result by Latushkin and Sukhtyaev by employing a different technique based on factorizations of analytic operator-valued functions due to Howland. Factorizations of analytic operator-valued functions are of particular interest in themselves and again we re-derive Howland's results and subsequently extend them. Considering algebraic multiplicities of finitely meromorphic operator-valued functions, we recall the notion of the index of a finitely meromorphic operator-valued function and use that to prove an analog of the well-known Weinstein-Aronszajn formula relating algebraic multiplicities of the underlying unperturbed and perturbed operators. Finally, we consider pairs of projections for which the difference belongs to the trace class and relate their Fredholm index to the index of the naturally underlying Birman-Schwinger operator.

On The Microscopic Modeling of Vehicular Traffic on General Networks

We introduce a formalism to deal with the microscopic modeling of vehicular traffic on a road network. Traffic on each road is uni-directional, and the dynamics of each vehicle is described by a Follow-the-Leader model. From a mathematical point of view, this amounts to define a system of ordinary differential equations on an arbitrary network. A general existence and uniqueness result is provided, while priorities at junctions are shown to hinder the stability of solutions. We investigate the occurrence of the Braess paradox in a time-dependent setting within this model. The emergence of Nash equilibria in a non-stationary situation results in the appearance of Braess type paradoxes, and this is supported by numerical simulations.

Singular Diffusion with Neumann boundary conditions

In this paper we develop an existence theory for the nonlinear initial-boundary value problem with singular diffusion $\partial_t u = \text{div}(k(x)\nabla G(u))$, $u|_{t=0}=u_0$ with Neumann boundary conditions $k(x)\nabla G(u)\cdot ν= 0$. Here $x\in B\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, a bounded open set with locally Lipchitz boundary, and with $ν$ as the unit outer normal. The function $G$ is Lipschitz continuous and nondecreasing, while $k(x)$ is diagonal matrix. We show that any two weak entropy solutions $u$ and $v$ satisfy $\Vert{u(t)-v(t)}\Vert_{L^1(B)}\le \Vert{u|_{t=0}-v|_{t=0}}\Vert_{L^1(B)}e^{Ct}$, for almost every $t\ge 0$, and a constant $C=C(k,G,B)$. If we restrict to the case when the entries $k_i$ of $k$ depend only on the corresponding component, $k_i=k_i(x_i)$, we show that there exists an entropy solution, thus establishing in this case that the problem is well-posed in the sense of Hadamard.

On the equivalence of Eulerian and Lagrangian variables for the two-component Camassa-Holm system

The Camassa-Holm equation and its two-component Camassa-Holm system generalization both experience wave breaking in finite time. To analyze this, and to obtain solutions past wave breaking, it is common to reformulate the original equation given in Eulerian coordinates, into a system of ordinary differential equations in Lagrangian coordinates. It is of considerable interest to study the stability of solutions and how this is manifested in Eulerian and Lagrangian variables. We identify criteria of convergence, such that convergence in Eulerian coordinates is equivalent to convergence in Lagrangian coordinates. In addition, we show how one can approximate global conservative solutions of the scalar Camassa-Holm equation by smooth solutions of the two-component Camassa-Holm system that do not experience wave breaking.

A Lipschitz metric for the Hunter-Saxton equation

We analyze stability of conservative solutions of the Cauchy problem on the line for the (integrated) Hunter-Saxton (HS) equation. Generically, the solutions of the HS equation develop singularities with steep gradients while preserving continuity of the solution itself. In order to obtain uniqueness, one is required to augment the equation itself by a measure that represents the associated energy, and the breakdown of the solution is associated with a complicated interplay where the measure becomes singular. The main result in this paper is the construction of a Lipschitz metric that compares two solutions of the HS equation with the respective initial data. The Lipschitz metric is based on the use of the Wasserstein metric.

Convergence of finite difference schemes for the Benjamin-Ono equation

In this paper, we analyze finite difference schemes for Benjamin-Ono equation, u_t = uu_x + Hu_{xx}, where H denotes the Hilbert transform. Both the decaying case on the full line and the periodic case are considered. If the initial data are sufficiently regular, fully discrete finite difference schemes shown to converge to a classical solution. Finally, the convergence is illustrated by several examples.

Dirichlet-to-Neumann Maps, Abstract Weyl-Titchmarsh $M$-Functions, and a Generalized Index of Unbounded Meromorphic Operator-Valued Functions

We introduce a generalized index for certain meromorphic, unbounded, operator-valued functions. The class of functions is chosen such that energy parameter dependent Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps associated to uniformly elliptic partial differential operators, particularly, non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators, on bounded Lipschitz domains, and abstract operator-valued Weyl-Titchmarsh $M$-functions and Donoghue-type $M$-functions corresponding to closed extensions of symmetric operators belong to it. The principal purpose of this paper is to prove index formulas that relate the difference of the algebraic multiplicities of the discrete eigenvalues of Robin realizations of non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators, and more abstract pairs of closed operators in Hilbert spaces with the generalized index of the corresponding energy dependent Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps and abstract Weyl-Titchmarsh $M$-functions, respectively.

On the index of meromorphic operator-valued functions and some applications

We revisit and connect several notions of algebraic multiplicities of zeros of analytic operator-valued functions and discuss the concept of the index of meromorphic operator-valued functions in complex, separable Hilbert spaces. Applications to abstract perturbation theory and associated Birman-Schwinger-type operators and to the operator-valued Weyl-Titchmarsh functions associated to closed extensions of dual pairs of closed operators are provided.

Isentropic Fluid Dynamics in a Curved Pipe

In this paper we study isentropic flow in a curved pipe. We focus on the consequences of the geometry of the pipe on the dynamics of the flow. More precisely, we present the solution of the general Cauchy problem for isentropic fluid flow in an arbitrarily curved, piecewise smooth pipe. We consider initial data in the subsonic regime, with small total variation about a stationary solution. The proof relies on the front-tracking method and is based on [1].

A continuous interpolation between conservative and dissipative solutions for the two-component Camassa-Holm system

We introduce a novel solution concept, denoted $α$-dissipative solutions, that provides a continuous interpolation between conservative and dissipative solutions of the Cauchy problem for the two-component Camassa-Holm system on the line with vanishing asymptotics. All the $α$-dissipative solutions are global weak solutions of the same equation in Eulerian coordinates, yet they exhibit rather distinct behavior at wave breaking. The solutions are constructed after a transformation into Lagrangian variables, where the solution is carefully modified at wave breaking.

Global dissipative solutions of the two-component Camassa-Holm system for initial data with nonvanishing asymptotics

We show existence of a global weak dissipative solution of the Cauchy problem for the two-component Camassa-Holm (2CH) system on the line with nonvanishing and distinct spatial asymptotics. The influence from the second component in the 2CH system on the regularity of the solution, and, in particular, the consequences for wave breaking, is discussed. Furthermore, the interplay between dissipative and conservative solutions is treated.

Periodic conservative solutions for the two-component Camassa-Holm system

We construct a global continuous semigroup of weak periodic conservative solutions to the two-component Camassa-Holm system, $u_t-u_{txx}+κu_x+3uu_x-2u_xu_{xx}-uu_{xxx}+ηρρ_x=0$ and $ρ_t+(uρ)_x=0$, for initial data $(u,ρ)|_{t=0}$ in $H^1_{\rm per}\times L^2_{\rm per}$. It is necessary to augment the system with an associated energy to identify the conservative solution. We study the stability of these periodic solutions by constructing a Lipschitz metric. Moreover, it is proved that if the density $ρ$ is bounded away from zero, the solution is smooth. Furthermore, it is shown that given a sequence $ρ_0^n$ of initial values for the densities that tend to zero, then the associated solutions $u^n$ will approach the global conservative weak solution of the Camassa-Holm equation. Finally it is established how the characteristics govern the smoothness of the solution.

Abstract Wave Equations and Associated Dirac-Type Operators

We discuss the unitary equivalence of generators $G_{A,R}$ associated with abstract damped wave equations of the type $\ddot{u} + R \dot{u} + A^*A u = 0$ in some Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_1$ and certain non-self-adjoint Dirac-type operators $Q_{A,R}$ (away from the nullspace of the latter) in $\mathcal{H}_1 \oplus \mathcal{H}_2$. The operator $Q_{A,R}$ represents a non-self-adjoint perturbation of a supersymmetric self-adjoint Dirac-type operator. Special emphasis is devoted to the case where 0 belongs to the continuous spectrum of $A^*A$. In addition to the unitary equivalence results concerning $G_{A,R}$ and $Q_{A,R}$, we provide a detailed study of the domain of the generator $G_{A,R}$, consider spectral properties of the underlying quadratic operator pencil $M(z) = |A|^2 - iz R - z^2 I_{\mathcal{H}_1}$, $z\in\mathbb{C}$, derive a family of conserved quantities for abstract wave equations in the absence of damping, and prove equipartition of energy for supersymmetric self-adjoint Dirac-type operators. The special example where $R$ represents an appropriate function of $|A|$ is treated in depth and the semigroup growth bound for this example is explicitly computed and shown to coincide with the corresponding spectral bound for the underlying generator and also with that of the corresponding Dirac-type operator. The cases of undamped (R=0) and damped ($R \neq 0$) abstract wave equations as well as the cases $A^* A \geq εI_{\mathcal{H}_1}$ for some $ε> 0$ and $0 \in σ(A^* A)$ (but 0 not an eigenvalue of $A^*A$) are separately studied in detail.

Convergence of a fully discrete finite difference scheme for the Korteweg-de Vries equation

We prove convergence of a fully discrete finite difference scheme for the Korteweg--de Vries equation. Both the decaying case on the full line and the periodic case are considered. If the initial data $u|_{t=0}=u_0$ is of high regularity, $u_0\in H^3(\R)$, the scheme is shown to converge to a classical solution, and if the regularity of the initial data is smaller, $u_0\in L^2(\R)$, then the scheme converges strongly in $L^2(0,T;L^2_{\mathrm{loc}}(\R))$ to a weak solution.

Operator splitting for well-posed active scalar equations

We analyze operator splitting methods applied to scalar equations with a nonlinear advection operator, and a linear (local or nonlocal) diffusion operator or a linear dispersion operator. The advection velocity is determined from the scalar unknown itself and hence the equations are so-called active scalar equations. Examples are provided by the surface quasi-geostrophic and aggregation equations. In addition, Burgers-type equations with fractional diffusion as well as the KdV and Kawahara equations are covered. Our main result is that the Godunov and Strang splitting methods converge with the expected rates provided the initial data is sufficiently regular.

Operator splitting for partial differential equations with Burgers nonlinearity

We provide a new analytical approach to operator splitting for equations of the type $u_t=Au+u u_x$ where $A$ is a linear differential operator such that the equation is well-posed. Particular examples include the viscous Burgers' equation, the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, the Benney-Lin equation, and the Kawahara equation. We show that the Strang splitting method converges with the expected rate if the initial data are sufficiently regular. In particular, for the KdV equation we obtain second-order convergence in $H^r$ for initial data in $H^{r+5}$ with arbitrary $r\ge 1$.

$L^\infty$ solutions for a model of polytropic gas flow with diffusive entropy

We establish the global existence of $L^\infty$ solutions for a model of polytropic gas flow with diffusive entropy. The result is obtained by showing the convergence of a class of finite difference schemes, which includes the Lax-Friedrichs and Godunov schemes. Such convergence is achieved by proving the estimates required for the application of the compensated compactness theory.

Lipschitz metric for the Camassa-Holm equation on the line

We study stability of solutions of the Cauchy problem on the line for the Camassa-Holm equation $u_t-u_{xxt}+3uu_x-2u_xu_{xx}-uu_{xxx}=0$ with initial data $u_0$. In particular, we derive a new Lipschitz metric $d_\D$ with the property that for two solutions $u$ and $v$ of the equation we have $d_\D(u(t),v(t))\le e^{Ct} d_\D(u_0,v_0)$. The relationship between this metric and the usual norms in $H^1$ and $L^\infty$ is clarified. The method extends to the generalized hyperelastic-rod equation $u_t-u_{xxt}+f(u)_x-f(u)_{xxx}+(g(u)+\frac12 f"(u)(u_x)^2)_x=0$ (for $f$ without inflection points).

Lipschitz metric for the periodic Camassa-Holm equation

We study stability of conservative solutions of the Cauchy problem for the periodic Camassa-Holm equation $u_t-u_{xxt}+κu_x+3uu_x-2u_xu_{xx}-uu_{xxx}=0$ with initial data $u_0$. In particular, we derive a new Lipschitz metric $d_\D$ with the property that for two solutions $u$ and $v$ of the equation we have $d_\D(u(t),v(t))\le e^{Ct} d_\D(u_0,v_0)$. The relationship between this metric and usual norms in $H^1_{\rm per}$ and $L^\infty_{\rm per}$ is clarified.

The Damped String Problem Revisited

We revisit the damped string equation on a compact interval with a variety of boundary conditions and derive an infinite sequence of trace formulas associated with it, employing methods familiar from supersymmetric quantum mechanics. We also derive completeness and Riesz basis results (with parentheses) for the associated root functions under less smoothness assumptions on the coefficients than usual, using operator theoretic methods (rather than detailed eigenvalue and root function asymptotics) only.

The Ablowitz-Ladik Hierarchy Revisited

We provide a detailed recursive construction of the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) hierarchy and its zero-curvature formalism. The two-coefficient AL hierarchy under investigation can be considered a complexified version of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation and its hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations. Specifically, we discuss in detail the stationary Ablowitz-Ladik formalism in connection with the underlying hyperelliptic curve and the stationary Baker-Akhiezer function and separately the corresponding time-dependent Ablowitz-Ladik formalism.
