Electronic procrystalline state in moire structures

Solid state materials can display varieties of atomic structural orders ranging from crystalline to amorphous, underlying their properties and diverse functionalities. Procrystal has emerged as a new category of solids, featuring a long-range ordered lattice framework tiled with disordered atomic or molecular structures on the lattice sites, arousing great interest due to its novel structural and physical properties. However, the electronic analogue of a procrystal, dubbed as an electronic procrystalline (EPC) state, has never been experimentally observed. Here, we report the observation of an EPC state in a moire superstructure formed between a monolayer metallic NiTe2 and a superconductor NbSe2 with incommensurate lattice wavevectors. The observed EPC state exhibits a long-range periodic charge modulation at the moire scale inlaid with short-range irregular orders within each moire cell. Strikingly, the short-range charge orders inside the moire unit cells have proximately root3*root3 quasi-period, which is absent in pristine NiTe2. Intriguingly, the EPC order is also observed in the superconducting state of the moire superstructure. Furthermore, the emergent EPC state and short-range charge order, coexisting with the proximity induced superconductivity, can be precisely modulated with the thickness of NiTe2. Our findings uncover the potential of moire platform for understanding and tuning novel correlated quantum phases with this exotic procrystalline order.

Basic formulation and first-principles implementation of nonlinear magneto-optical effects

First-principles calculation of nonlinear magneto-optical effects has become an indispensable tool to reveal the geometric and topological nature of electronic states and to understand light-matter interactions. While intriguingly rich physics could emerge in magnetic materials, further methodological developments are required to deal with time-reversal symmetry breaking, due to the degeneracy and gauge problems caused by symmetry and the low-frequency divergence problem in the existing calculation formalism. Here we present a gauge-covariant and low-frequency convergent formalism for the first-principles computation. Remarkably, this formalism generally works for both non-magnetic and magnetic materials with or without band degeneracy. Reliability and capability of our method are demonstrated by studying example materials (i.e., bilayers of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and CrI$_3$) and comparing with published results. Moreover, an importance correction term that ensures gauge covariance of degenerate states is derived, whose influence on physical responses is systematically checked. Our method enables computation of nonlinear magneto-optical effects in magnetic materials and paves the way for exploring rich physics created by the interplay of light and magnetism.

Knowledge Distillation for Mobile Edge Computation Offloading

Edge computation offloading allows mobile end devices to put execution of compute-intensive task on the edge servers. End devices can decide whether offload the tasks to edge servers, cloud servers or execute locally according to current network condition and devices' profile in an online manner. In this article, we propose an edge computation offloading framework based on Deep Imitation Learning (DIL) and Knowledge Distillation (KD), which assists end devices to quickly make fine-grained decisions to optimize the delay of computation tasks online. We formalize computation offloading problem into a multi-label classification problem. Training samples for our DIL model are generated in an offline manner. After model is trained, we leverage knowledge distillation to obtain a lightweight DIL model, by which we further reduce the model's inference delay. Numerical experiment shows that the offloading decisions made by our model outperforms those made by other related policies in latency metric. Also, our model has the shortest inference delay among all policies.

Self-sweeping ytterbium-doped fiber laser based on a fiber saturable absorber

Generally speaking, the self-sweeping effect relies on the dynamical grating formed in a gain fiber. Here, the normal self-sweeping was generated in a pump-free ytterbium-doped fiber which serves as a fiber saturable absorber and is introduced to the laser cavity by a circulator in this experiment. The sweeping rate and the sweeping range alter as usual, both of which can be controlled by the pump power. Further, a new self-pulse signal is observed and discussed in this work, which shows the difference of the self-sweeping effects between active fiber and fiber saturable absorber.

Synthetic topological insulator with periodically modulated effective gauge fields

We study both theoretically and numerically the topological edge states in synthetic photonic lattice with finitely periodic gauge potentials. The effective gauge fields are implemented by tailoring the phase alternatively and periodically, which finally results in symmetric total reflection at two boundaries of the one-dimensional synthetic lattice. Further tuning the nearest-neighbor coupling anisotropically, topological edge states occur at the two boundaries. Our work provides a new way to study the topological physics of one-dimensional coupled waveguide arrays with synthetic photonic lattice.
