Riesz bases of port-Hamiltonian systems

The location of the spectrum and the Riesz basis property of well-posed homogeneous infinite-dimensional linear port-Hamiltonian systems on a 1D spatial domain are studied. It is shown that the Riesz basis property is equivalent to the fact that system operator generates a strongly continuous group. Moreover, in this situation the spectrum consists of eigenvalues only, located in a strip parallel to the imaginary axis and they can decomposed into finitely many sets having each a uniform gap.

A $0-2$ law for cosine families with $\limsup$ to $\infty$

For $\left(C(t)\right)_{t\in\mathbb R}$ being a cosine family on a unital normed algebra, we show that the estimate $\limsup_{t\to\infty^{+}}\|C(t) - I\| <2$ implies that $C(t)=I$ for all $t\in\mathbb R$. This generalizes the result that $\sup_{t\geq0}\|C(t)-I\|<2$ yields that $C(t)=I$ for all $t\geq0$. We also state the corresponding result for discrete cosine families and for semigroups.

Feedback theory extended for proving generation of contraction semigroups

Recently, the following novel method for proving the existence of solutions for certain linear time-invariant PDEs was introduced: The operator associated to a given PDE is represented by a (larger) operator with an internal loop. If the larger operator (without the internal loop) generates a contraction semigroup, the internal loop is accretive, and some non-restrictive technical assumptions are fulfilled, then the original operator generates a contraction semigroup as well. Beginning with the undamped wave equation, this general idea can be applied to show that the heat equation and wave equations with damping are well-posed. In the present paper we show how this approach can benefit from feedback techniques and recent developments in well-posed systems theory, at the same time generalising the previously known results. Among others, we show how well-posedness of degenerate parabolic equations can be proved.

$C_0$-semigroups for hyperbolic partial differential equations on a one-dimensional spatial domain

Hyperbolic partial differential equations on a one-dimensional spatial domain are studied. This class of systems includes models of beams and waves as well as the transport equation and networks of non-homogeneous transmission lines. The main result of this paper is a simple test for $C_0$-semigroup generation in terms of the boundary conditions. The result is illustrated with several examples.

De Branges-Rovnyak realizations of operator-valued Schur functions on the complex right half-plane

We give a controllable energy-preserving and an observable co-energy-preserving de Branges-Rovnyak functional model realization of an arbitrary given operator Schur function defined on the complex right-half plane. We work the theory out fully in the right-half plane, without using results for the disk case, in order to expose the technical details of continuous-time systems theory. At the end of the article, we make explicit the connection to the corresponding classical de Branges-Rovnyak realizations for Schur functions on the complex unit disk.

Linear wave systems on $n$-D spatial domains

In this paper we study the linear wave equation on an $n$-dimensional spatial domain. We show that there is a boundary triplet associated to the undamped wave equation. This enables us to characterise all boundary conditions for which the undamped wave equation possesses a unique solution non-increasing in the energy. Furthermore, we add boundary inputs and outputs to the system, thus turning it into an impedance conservative boundary control system.

Zero-two law for cosine families

For $\left(C(t)\right)_{t \geq 0}$ being a strongly continuous cosine family on a Banach space, we show that the estimate $\limsup_{t\to 0^{+}}\|C(t) - I\| <2$ implies that $C(t)$ converges to $I$ in the operator norm. This implication has become known as the zero-two law. We further prove that the stronger assumption of $\sup_{t\geq0}\|C(t)-I\|<2$ yields that $C(t)=I$ for all $t\geq0$. Additionally, we derive alternative proofs for similar results for $C_{0}$-semigroups.

Generators with a closure relation

Assume that a block operator of the form $\left(\begin{smallmatrix}A_{1}\\A_{2}\quad 0\end{smallmatrix}\right)$, acting on the Banach space $X_{1}\times X_{2}$, generates a contraction $C_{0}$-semigroup. We show that the operator $A_{S}$ defined by $A_{S}x=A_{1}\left(\begin{smallmatrix}x\\SA_{2}x\end{smallmatrix}\right)$ with the natural domain generates a contraction semigroup on $X_{1}$. Here, $S$ is a boundedly invertible operator for which $ε\ide-S^{-1}$ is dissipative for some $ε>0$. With this result the existence and uniqueness of solutions of the heat equation can be derived from the wave equation.

Weakly admissible $H^{\infty}(\C_{-})$-calculus on general Banach spaces

We show that, given a Banach space and a generator of an exponentially stable $C_{0}$-semigroup, a weakly admissible operator $g(A)$ can be defined for any $g$ bounded, analytic function on the left half-plane. This yields an (unbounded) functional calculus. The construction uses a Toeplitz operator and is motivated by system theory. In separable Hilbert spaces, we even get admissibility. Furthermore, it is investigated when a bounded calculus can be guaranteed. For this we introduce the new notion of exact observability by direction. Finally, it is shown that the calculus coincides with one for half-plane-operators.

Admissible operators and ${\mathcal H}_{\infty}$ calculus

Given a Hilbert space and the generator $A$ of a strongly continuous, exponentially stable, semigroup on this Hilbert space. For any $g(-s) \in {\mathcal H}_{\infty}$ we show that there exists an infinite-time admissible output operator $g(A)$. If $g$ is rational, then this operator is bounded, and equals the "normal" definition of $g(A)$. In particular, when $g(s)=1/(s + α)$, $ α\in {\mathbb C}_0^+$, then this admissible output operator equals $(αI - A)^{-1}$. Although in general $g(A)$ may be unbounded, we always have that $g(A)$ multiplied by the semigroup is a bounded operator for every (strictly) positive time instant. Furthermore, when there exists an admissible output operator $C$ such that $(C,A)$ is exactly observable, then $g(A)$ is bounded for all $g$'s with $g(-s) \in {\mathcal H}_{\infty}$, i.e., there exists a bounded ${\mathcal H}_{\infty}$-calculus. Moreover, we rediscover some well-known classes of generators also having a bounded ${\mathcal H}_{\infty}$-calculus.

The growth of a C_0-semigroup characterised by its cogenerator

We characterise contractivity, boundedness and polynomial boundedness for a C_0-semigroup on a Banach space in terms of its cogenerator V (or the Cayley transform of the generator) or its resolvent. In particular, we extend results of Gomilko and Brenner, Thomee and show that polynomial boundedness of a semigroup implies polynomial boundedness of its cogenerator. As is shown by an example, the result is optimal. For analytic semigroups we show that the converse holds, i.e., polynomial boundedness of the cogenerators implies polynomial boundedness of the semigroup. In addition, we show by simple examples in (C^2,\|\cdot\|_p), p \neq 2, that our results on the characterisation of contractivity are sharp. These examples also show that the famous Foias-Sz.-Nagy theorem on cogenerators of contraction semigroups on Hilbert spaces fails in (C^2,\|\cdot\|_p) for p\neq 2.
