Global stability of Minkowski space for the Einstein-Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system in generalized wave coordinates

We prove global existence for Einstein's equations with a charged scalar field for initial conditions sufficiently close to the Minkowski spacetime without matter. The proof relies on generalized wave coordinates adapted to the outgoing Schwarzschild light cones and the estimates for the massless Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system, on the background of metrics asymptotically approaching Schwarzschild at null infinity in such coordinates, by Kauffman. The generalized wave coordinates are obtained from a change of variables, introduced by Lindblad, to asymptotically Schwarzschild coordinates at null infinity. The main technical advances are that the change of coordinates makes critical components of the metric decay faster, making the quasilinear wave operator closer to the flat wave operator, and that commuting with modified Lie derivatives preserves the geometric null structure, improving the error terms. This improved decay of the metric is essential for proving our stability result, and will likely be useful in other contexts as well.

Masses at null infinity for Einstein's equations in harmonic coordinates

In this work we give a complete picture of how to in a direct simple way define the mass at null infinity in harmonic coordinates in three different ways that we show satisfy the Bondi mass loss law. The first and second way involve only the limit of metric (Trautman mass) respectively the null second fundamental forms along asymptotically characteristic surfaces (asymptotic Hawking mass) that only depend on the ADM mass. The last in an original way involves construction of special characteristic coordinates at null infinity (Bondi mass). The results here rely on asymptotics of the metric derived in [24].

On modified scattering for 1D quadratic Klein-Gordon equations with non-generic potentials

We consider the asymptotic behavior of small global-in-time solutions to a 1D Klein-Gordon equation with a spatially localized, variable coefficient quadratic nonlinearity and a non-generic linear potential. The purpose of this work is to continue the investigation of the occurrence of a novel modified scattering behavior of the solutions that involves a logarithmic slow-down of the decay rate along certain rays. This phenomenon is ultimately caused by the threshold resonance of the linear Klein-Gordon operator. It was previously uncovered for the special case of the zero potential in [51]. The Klein-Gordon model considered in this paper is motivated by the asymptotic stability problem for kink solutions arising in classical scalar field theories on the real line.

Scattering from infinity for semilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition or the weak null condition

We show global existence backwards from scattering data at infinity for semilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition or the weak null condition. Semilinear terms satisfying the weak null condition appear in many equations in physics. The scattering data is given in terms of the radiation field, although in the case of the weak null condition there is an additional logarithmic term in the asymptotic behaviour that has to be taken into account. Our results are sharp in the sense that the solution has the same spatial decay as the radiation field does along null infinity, which is assumed to decay at a rate that is consistent with the forward problem. The proof uses a higher order asymptotic expansion together with a new fractional Morawetz estimate with strong weights at infinity.

Decay and asymptotics for the 1D Klein-Gordon equation with variable coefficient cubic nonlinearities

We obtain sharp decay estimates and asymptotics for small solutions to the one-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation with constant coefficient cubic and spatially localized, variable coefficient cubic nonlinearities. Vector-field techniques to deal with the long-range nature of the cubic nonlinearity become problematic in the presence of variable coefficients. We introduce a novel approach based on pointwise-in-time local decay estimates for the Klein-Gordon propagator to overcome this impasse.

Local well-posedness for the motion of a compressible, self-gravitating liquid with free surface boundary

We establish the local well-posedness for the free boundary problem for the compressible Euler equations describing the motion of liquid under the influence of Newtonian self-gravity. We do this by solving a tangentially-smoothed version of Euler's equations in Lagrangian coordinates which satisfies uniform energy estimates as the smoothing parameter goes to zero. The main technical tools are delicate energy estimates and optimal elliptic estimates in terms of boundary regularity, for the Dirichlet problem and Green's function.

A sharp counterexample to local existence of low regularity solutions to Einstein's equations in wave coordinates

We are concerned with how regular initial data have to be to ensure local existence for Einstein's equations in wave coordinates. Klainerman-Rodnianski and Smith-Tataru showed that there in general is local existence for data in Sobolev spaces H^s with regularity s>2. We give an example of data in Sobolev spaces with regularity s=2 for which there is no local solution in this space.

Scattering for the Klein-Gordon equation with quadratic and variable coefficient cubic nonlinearities

We study the 1D Klein-Gordon equation with variable coefficient cubic nonlinearity. This problem exhibits a striking resonant interaction between the spatial frequencies of the nonlinear coefficients and the temporal oscillations of the solutions. In the case where the worst of this resonant behavior is absent, we prove L-Infinity scattering as well as a certain kind of strong smoothness for the solution at time-like infinity with the help of several new normal-forms transformations. Some explicit examples are also given which suggest qualitatively different behavior in the case where the strongest cubic resonances are present.

The Strauss conjecture on Kerr black hole backgrounds

We examine solutions to semilinear wave equations on black hole backgrounds and give a proof of an analog of the Strauss conjecture on the Schwarzschild and Kerr, with small angular momentum, black hole backgrounds. The key estimates are a class of weighted Strichartz estimates, which are used near infinity where the metrics can be viewed as small perturbations of the Minkowski metric, and a localized energy estimate on the black hole background, which handles the behavior in the remaining compact set.

Asymptotic decay for a one-dimensional nonlinear wave equation

We consider the asymptotic behaviour of finite energy solutions to the one-dimensional defocusing nonlinear wave equation $-u_{tt} + u_{xx} = |u|^{p-1} u$, where $p > 1$. Standard energy methods guarantee global existence, but do not directly say much about the behaviour of $u(t)$ as $t \to \infty$. Note that in contrast to higher-dimensional settings, solutions to the linear equation $-u_{tt} + u_{xx} = 0$ do not exhibit decay, thus apparently ruling out perturbative methods for understanding such solutions. Nevertheless, we will show that solutions for the nonlinear equation behave differently from the linear equation, and more specifically that we have the average $L^\infty$ decay $\lim_{T \to +\infty} \frac{1}{T} \int_0^T \|u(t)\|_{L^\infty_x(\R)}\ dt = 0$, in sharp contrast to the linear case. An unusual ingredient in our arguments is the classical Radamacher differentiation theorem that asserts that Lipschitz functions are almost everywhere differentiable.

The global stability of the Minkowski space-time in harmonic gauge

We give a new proof of the global stability of Minkowski space originally established in the vacuum case by Christodoulou and Klainerman. The new approach shows that the Einstein-vacuum and the Einstein-scalar field equations with general asymptotically flat initial data satisfying a global smallness condition produce global (causally geodesically complete) solutions asymptotically convergent to the Minkowski space-time. The proof utilizes the classical harmonic (also known as de Donder or wave coordinate) gauge.

A priori estimates for the free-boundary 3-D compressible Euler equations in physical vacuum

We prove a priori estimates for the three-dimensional compressible Euler equations with moving {\it physical} vacuum boundary, with an equation of state given by $p(ρ) = C_γρ^γ$ for $γ>1$. The vacuum condition necessitates the vanishing of the pressure, and hence density, on the dynamic boundary, which creates a degenerate and characteristic hyperbolic {\it free-boundary} system to which standard methods of symmetrizable hyperbolic equations cannot be applied.

Global existence for the Einstein vacuum equations in wave coordinates

We prove global stability of Minkowski space for the Einstein vacuum equations in harmonic (wave) coordinate gauge for the set of restricted data coinciding with Schwartzschild solution in the neighborhood of space-like infinity. The result contradicts previous beliefs that wave coordinates are "unstable in the large" and provides an alternative approach to the stability problem originally solved (for unrestricted data, in a different gauge and with a precise description of the asymptotic behavior at null infinity) by D. Christodoulou and S. Klainerman. Using the wave coordinate gauge we recast the Einstein equations as a system of quasilinear wave equations and, in absence of the classical null condition, establish a small data global existence result. In our previous work we introduced the notion of a eak nul condition and showed that the Einstein equations in wave coordinates satisfy this condition. The result of this paper relies on this observation and combines it with the vector field method based on the symmetries of the standard Minkowski space. In a forthcoming paper we will address the question of stability of Minkowski space for the Einstein vacuum equations in wave coordinates for all "small" asymptotically flat data and the case of the Einstein equations coupled to a scalar field.
