Asymptotic Boundary Observability for the Schrödinger Equation on Simplices

We consider the Schrödinger equation $(i\partial_t+Δ)u=0$ on an $n$-dimensional simplex with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We use a commutator argument along with integration by parts to obtain an observability asymptotic for any one face of the simplex. Rather than the typical observability inequality, we are able to do better as we instead prove a large-time asymptotic.

Asymptotic Boundary Observability For The Wave Equation On Simplices

In this paper, we consider the wave equation on an n-dimensional simplex with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our main result is an asymptotic observability identity from any one face of the simplex. The novel aspects of the result are that it is a large-time asymptotic rather than an estimate, and it requires no dynamical assumptions on the billiard flow. The proof uses mainly integrations by parts.

Conformal Perturbations and Local Smoothing

The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of conformal perturbations on the local smoothing effect for the Schrödinger equation on surfaces of revolution. The paper \cite{ChWu-lsm} studied the Schrödinger equation on surfaces of revolution with one trapped orbit. The dynamics near this trapping were unstable, but degenerately so. Beginning from the metric $g$ from this paper, we consider the perturbed metric $g_s = e^{sf}g$, where $f$ is a smooth, compactly supported function. If $s$ is small enough and finitely many derivatives of $f$ satisfy appropriate symbolic estimates, then we show that a local smoothing estimate still holds.

Non-concentration and restriction bounds for Neumann eigenfunctions of piecewise $C^{\infty}$ bounded planar domains

Let $(Ω,g)$ be a piecewise-smooth, bounded convex domain in $\R^2$ and consider $L^2$-normalized Neumann eigenfunctions $ϕ_λ$ with eigenvalue $λ^2$ and $u_λ:= ϕ_λ |_{\partial Ω}$ the associated Dirichlet data (ie. boundary restriction of $ϕ_λ$). Our first main result (Theorem \ref{T:non-con}) is a small-scale {\em non-concentration} estimate: We prove that for {\em any} $x_0 \in \overlineΩ,$ (including boundary corner points) and any $δ\in [0,1),$ $$ \| ϕ_h \|_{B(x_0,λ^{-δ})\cap Ω} = O(λ^{-δ/2}).$$ Our subsequent results involve applications of the nonconcentration estimate to upper bounds for $L^2$ restrictions of boundary eigenfunctions that are valid up to boundary corners. In particular, in Theorem \ref{dirichlet} we prove that for any {\em flat} boundary edge $Γ$ (possibly including corner points), the boundary restrictions $u_h:= ϕ_h |_{\partial Ω}$ satisfy the bounds $$ \|u_λ \|_{L^2(Γ)} = O_ε(λ^{1/4 + ε}),$$ for any $ε>0.$ The exponent $1/4$ is sharp and the result improves on the $O(λ^{1/3})$ universal $L^2$-restriction bound for Neumann eigenfunctions due to Tataru \cite{Ta}. The $O(λ^{1/4})$ -bound is also an extension to the boundary (including corner points) of well-known interior $L^2$ restriction bounds of Burq-Gerard-Tzvetkov \cite{BGT} along totally-geodesic hypersurfaces.

A non-concentration estimate for partially rectangular billiards

We consider quasimodes on planar domains with a partially rectangular boundary. We prove that for any $ε_0>0$, an $Ø(λ^{-ε_0})$ quasimode must have $L^2$ mass in the "wings" bounded below by $λ^{-2-δ}$ for any $δ>0$. The proof uses the author's recent work on 0-Gevrey smooth domains to approximate quasimodes on $C^{1,1}$ domains. There is an improvement for $C^{2,α}$ domains.

Exterior mass estimates and $L^2$ restriction bounds for Neumann data along hypersurfaces

We study the problem of estimating the $L^2$ norm of Laplace eigenfunctions on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ when restricted to a hypersurface $H$. We prove mass estimates for the restrictions of eigenfunctions $ϕ_h$, $(h^2 Δ- 1)ϕ_h = 0$, to $H$ in the region exterior to the coball bundle of $H$, on $h^δ$-scales ($0\leq δ< 2/3$). We use this estimate to obtain an $O(1)$ $L^2$-restriction bound for the Neumann data along $H.$ The estimate also applies to eigenfunctions of semiclassical Schrödinger operators.

High-frequency resolvent estimates on asymptotically Euclidean warped products

We consider the resolvent on asymptotically Euclidean warped product manifolds in an appropriate 0-Gevrey class, with trapped sets consisting of only finitely many components. We prove that the high-frequency resolvent is either bounded by $C_ε|λ|^ε$ for any $ε>0$, or blows up faster than any polynomial (at least along a subsequence). A stronger result holds if the manifold is analytic. The method of proof is to exploit the warped product structure to separate variables, obtaining a one-dimensional semiclassical Schrödinger operator. We then classify the microlocal resolvent behaviour associated to every possible type of critical value of the potential, and translate this into the associated resolvent estimates. Weakly stable trapping admits highly concentrated quasimodes and fast growth of the resolvent. Conversely, using a delicate inhomogeneous blowup procedure loosely based on the classical positive commutator argument, we show that any weakly unstable trapping forces at least some spreading of quasimodes. As a first application, we conclude that either there is a resonance free region of size $| \Im λ| \leq C_ε| \Re λ|^{-1-ε}$ for any $ε>0$, or there is a sequence of resonances converging to the real axis faster than any polynomial. Again, a stronger result holds if the manifold is analytic. As a second application, we prove a spreading result for weak quasimodes in partially rectangular billiards.

Imperfect geometric control and overdamping for the damped wave equation

We consider the damped wave equation on a manifold with imperfect geometric control. We show the sub-exponential energy decay estimate in \cite{Chr-NC-erratum} is optimal in the case of one hyperbolic periodic geodesic. We show if the equation is overdamped, then the energy decays exponentially. Finally we show if the equation is overdamped but geometric control fails for one hyperbolic periodic geodesic, then nevertheless the energy decays exponentially.

Quantum ergodic restriction for Cauchy data: Interior QUE and restricted QUE

We prove a quantum ergodic restriction theorem for the Cauchy data of a sequence of quantum ergodic eigenfunctions on a hypersurface $H$ of a Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$. The technique of proof is to use a Rellich type identity to relate quantum ergodicity of Cauchy data on $H$ to quantum ergodicity of eigenfunctions on the global manifold $M$. This has the interesting consequence that if the eigenfunctions are quantum unique ergodic on the global manifold $M$, then the Cauchy data is automatically quantum unique ergodic on $H$ with respect to operators whose symbols vanish to order one on the glancing set of unit tangential directions to $H$.

Sharp local smoothing for manifolds with smooth inflection transmission

We consider a family of spherically symmetric, asymptotically Euclidean manifolds with two trapped sets, one which is unstable and one which is semi-stable. The phase space structure is that of an inflection transmission set. We prove a sharp local smoothing estimate for the linear Schrödinger equation with a loss which depends on how flat the manifold is near each of the trapped sets. The result interpolates between the family of similar estimates in \cite{ChWu-lsm}. As a consequence of the techniques of proof, we also show a sharp high energy resolvent estimate with a polynomial loss depending on how flat the manifold is near each of the trapped sets.

Unique Continuation for Quasimodes on Surfaces of Revolution: Rotationally invariant Neighbourhoods

We prove a strong conditional unique continuation estimate for irreducible quasimodes in rotationally invariant neighbourhoods on compact surfaces of revolution. The estimate states that Laplace quasimodes which cannot be decomposed as a sum of other quasimodes have $L^2$ mass bounded below by $C_ελ^{-1 - ε}$ for any $ε>0$ on any open rotationally invariant neighbourhood which meets the semiclassical wavefront set of the quasimode. For an analytic manifold, we conclude the same estimate with a lower bound of $C_δλ^{-1 + δ}$ for some fixed $δ>0$.

From resolvent estimates to damped waves

In this paper we show how to obtain decay estimates for the damped wave equation on a compact manifold without geometric control via knowledge of the dynamics near the un-damped set. We show that if replacing the damping term with a higher-order \emph{complex absorbing potential} gives an operator enjoying polynomial resolvent bounds on the real axis, then the "resolvent" associated to our damped problem enjoys bounds of the same order. It is known that the necessary estimates with complex absorbing potential can also be obtained via gluing from estimates for corresponding non-compact models.

Local smoothing for the Schrödinger equation with a prescribed loss

We consider a family of surfaces of revolution, each with a single periodic geodesic which is degenerately unstable. We prove a local smoothing estimate for solutions to the linear Schrödinger equation with a loss that depends on the degeneracy, and we construct explicit examples to show our estimate is saturated on a weak semiclassical time scale. As a byproduct of our proof, we obtain a cutoff resolvent estimate with a sharp polynomial loss.

Near Sharp Strichartz estimates with loss in the presence of degenerate hyperbolic trapping

We consider an $n$-dimensional spherically symmetric, asymptotically Euclidean manifold with two ends and a codimension 1 trapped set which is degenerately hyperbolic. By separating variables and constructing a semiclassical parametrix for a time scale polynomially beyond Ehrenfest time, we show that solutions to the linear Schrödiner equation with initial conditions localized on a spherical harmonic satisfy Strichartz estimates with a loss depending only on the dimension $n$ and independent of the degeneracy. The Strichartz estimates are sharp up to an arbitrary $β>0$ loss. This is in contrast to \cite{ChWu-lsm}, where it is shown that solutions satisfy a sharp local smoothing estimate with loss depending only on the degeneracy of the trapped set, independent of the dimension.

Nonlinear bound states on weakly homogeneous spaces

We prove the existence of ground state solutions for a class of nonlinear elliptic equations, arising in the production of standing wave solutions to an associated family of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. We examine two constrained minimization problems, which give rise to such solutions. One yields what we call $F_λ$-minimizers, the other energy minimizers. We produce such ground state solutions on a class of Riemannian manifolds called weakly homogeneous spaces, and establish smoothness, positivity, and decay properties. We also identify classes of Riemannian manifolds with no such minimizers, and classes for which essential uniqueness of positive solutions to the associated elliptic PDE fails.

The Colin de Verdière Graph Parameter for Threshold Graphs

We consider Schrödinger operators on threshold graphs and prove a formula for the Colin de Verdière parameter in terms of the building sequence. We construct an optimal Colin de Verdière matrix for each connected threshold graph $G$ of $n$ vertices. For a large subclass of threshold graphs we construct an alternative Colin de Verdière matrix depending on a large parameter. As a corollary to this last construction, we give estimates on the size of the non-zero eigenvalues of this matrix.
