AgentStop: Terminating Local AI Agents Early to Save Energy in Consumer Devices

Autonomous agents powered by large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used to automate complex, multi-step tasks such as coding or web-based question answering. While remote, cloud-based agents offer scalability and ease of deployment, they raise privacy concerns, depend on network connectivity, and incur recurring API costs. Deploying agents locally on user devices mitigates these issues by preserving data privacy and eliminating usage-based fees. However, agentic workflows are far more resource-intensive than typical LLM interactions. Iterative reasoning, tool use, and failure retries substantially increase token consumption, often expending significant compute without successfully completing tasks. In this work, we investigate the time, token, and energy overhead of locally deployed LLM-based agents on consumer hardware. Our measurements show that agentic execution increases GPU power draw, temperature, and battery drain compared to single-inference workloads. To address this inefficiency, we introduce AgentStop, a lightweight efficiency supervisor that predicts and preemptively terminates trajectories unlikely to succeed. Leveraging low-cost execution signals, such as token-level log probabilities, AgentStop can reduce wasted energy by 15-20% with minimal impact on task performance (<5% utility drop) for challenging web-based question answering and coding benchmarks. These findings position predictive early termination as a practical mechanism for enabling sustainable, privacy-preserving LLM agents on user devices. When Agents Handle Secrets: A Survey of Confidential Computing for Agentic AI

Agentic AI systems, specifically LLM-driven agents that plan, invoke tools, maintain persistent memory, and delegate tasks to peer agents via protocols such as MCP and A2A, introduce a threat surface that differs materially from standalone model inference. Agents accumulate sensitive context, hold credentials, and operate across pipelines no single party fully controls, enabling prompt injection, context exfiltration, credential theft, and inter-agent message poisoning. Current defenses operate entirely within the software stack and can be silently bypassed by a sufficiently privileged adversary such as a compromised cloud operator. Confidential computing (CC) offers a hardware-rooted alternative: Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) isolate agent code and data from privileged system software, while remote attestation enables verifiable trust across distributed deployments. This survey synthesizes the design space in four parts: (i) a unified taxonomy of six TEE platforms (Intel SGX, Intel TDX, AMD SEV-SNP, ARM TrustZone, ARM CCA, and NVIDIA H100 CC) covering deployment roles and performance tradeoffs; (ii) an agent-centric threat model spanning perception, planning, memory, action, and coordination layers mapped to nine security goals; (iii) a comparative survey of CC-based defenses distinguishing findings that transfer from single-call inference versus what requires new agentic designs; and (iv) six open challenges including compound attestation for multi-hop agent chains and GPU-TEE performance at LLM scale. While several hardware trust primitives appear mature enough for targeted deployments, no broadly established end-to-end framework yet binds them into a coherent security substrate for production agentic AI.

BatteryLab: A Collaborative Platform for Power Monitoring

Advances in cloud computing have simplified the way that both software development and testing are performed. This is not true for battery testing for which state of the art test-beds simply consist of one phone attached to a power meter. These test-beds have limited resources, access, and are overall hard to maintain; for these reasons, they often sit idle with no experiment to run. In this paper, we propose to share existing battery testbeds and transform them into vantage points of BatteryLab, a power monitoring platform offering heterogeneous devices and testing conditions. We have achieved this vision with a combination of hardware and software which allow to augment existing battery test-beds with remote capabilities. BatteryLab currently counts three vantage points, one in Europe and two in the US, hosting three Android devices and one iPhone 7. We benchmark BatteryLab with respect to the accuracy of its battery readings, system performance, and platform heterogeneity. Next, we demonstrate how measurements can be run atop of BatteryLab by developing the &#34;Web Power Monitor&#34; (WPM), a tool which can measure website power consumption at scale. We released WPM and used it to report on the energy consumption of Alexa&#39;s top 1,000 websites across 3 locations and 4 devices (both Android and iOS).

Multimodal Federated Learning on IoT Data

Federated learning is proposed as an alternative to centralized machine learning since its client-server structure provides better privacy protection and scalability in real-world applications. In many applications, such as smart homes with Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, local data on clients are generated from different modalities such as sensory, visual, and audio data. Existing federated learning systems only work on local data from a single modality, which limits the scalability of the systems. In this paper, we propose a multimodal and semi-supervised federated learning framework that trains autoencoders to extract shared or correlated representations from different local data modalities on clients. In addition, we propose a multimodal FedAvg algorithm to aggregate local autoencoders trained on different data modalities. We use the learned global autoencoder for a downstream classification task with the help of auxiliary labelled data on the server. We empirically evaluate our framework on different modalities including sensory data, depth camera videos, and RGB camera videos. Our experimental results demonstrate that introducing data from multiple modalities into federated learning can improve its classification performance. In addition, we can use labelled data from only one modality for supervised learning on the server and apply the learned model to testing data from other modalities to achieve decent F1 scores (e.g., with the best performance being higher than 60%), especially when combining contributions from both unimodal clients and multimodal clients.

Privacy-Aware Human Mobility Prediction via Adversarial Networks

As various mobile devices and location-based services are increasingly developed in different smart city scenarios and applications, many unexpected privacy leakages have arisen due to geolocated data collection and sharing. While these geolocated data could provide a rich understanding of human mobility patterns and address various societal research questions, privacy concerns for users&#39; sensitive information have limited their utilization. In this paper, we design and implement a novel LSTM-based adversarial mechanism with representation learning to attain a privacy-preserving feature representation of the original geolocated data (mobility data) for a sharing purpose. We quantify the utility-privacy trade-off of mobility datasets in terms of trajectory reconstruction risk, user re-identification risk, and mobility predictability. Our proposed architecture reports a Pareto Frontier analysis that enables the user to assess this trade-off as a function of Lagrangian loss weight parameters. The extensive comparison results on four representative mobility datasets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed architecture and the efficiency of the proposed privacy-preserving features extractor. Our results show that by exploring Pareto optimal setting, we can simultaneously increase both privacy (45%) and utility (32%).

Towards Battery-Free Machine Learning and Inference in Underwater Environments

This paper is motivated by a simple question: Can we design and build battery-free devices capable of machine learning and inference in underwater environments? An affirmative answer to this question would have significant implications for a new generation of underwater sensing and monitoring applications for environmental monitoring, scientific exploration, and climate/weather prediction. To answer this question, we explore the feasibility of bridging advances from the past decade in two fields: battery-free networking and low-power machine learning. Our exploration demonstrates that it is indeed possible to enable battery-free inference in underwater environments. We designed a device that can harvest energy from underwater sound, power up an ultra-low-power microcontroller and on-board sensor, perform local inference on sensed measurements using a lightweight Deep Neural Network, and communicate the inference result via backscatter to a receiver. We tested our prototype in an emulated marine bioacoustics application, demonstrating the potential to recognize underwater animal sounds without batteries. Through this exploration, we highlight the challenges and opportunities for making underwater battery-free inference and machine learning ubiquitous.
