Novel correlated 5f electronic states in cubic AnSn3 (An=U, Np, Pu) intermetallics

The intricate interplay between itinerant-localized 5f states and strongly correlated electronic states have been systematically investigated in isostructural actinide compounds AnSn3 (An=U, Np, Pu) by using a combination of the density functional theory and the embedded dynamical mean-field approach. The obvious narrow flat 5f electronic band with remarkable spectral weight emerges in the vicinity of Fermi level for three compounds. Subsequently the significant hybridization between 5f states and conduction bands opens evident gaps together with conspicuous valence state fluctuations jointly indicating the partially itinerant 5f electrons. Especially, prominent quasiparticle multiplets only appear in PuSn3 due to the sizable valence state fluctuations and multiple competing atomic eigenstates. Therefore itinerant 5f states tend to involve in active chemical bonding, restraining the formation of local magnetic moment of actinide atoms, which partly elucidates the underlying mechanism of paramagnetic USn3 and PuSn3, as well as itinerant-electron antiferromagnetic NpSn3. Correspondingly, the 5f electronic correlation strength expressed in band renormalization and electron effective masse intertwines with itinerant-localized 5f states. Consequently, detail electronic structure of 5f states dependence on actinide series shall gain deep insight into our understanding of AnSn3 (An=U, Np, Pu) intermetallics and promote ongoing research.

AFE-CNN: 3D Skeleton-based Action Recognition with Action Feature Enhancement

Existing 3D skeleton-based action recognition approaches reach impressive performance by encoding handcrafted action features to image format and decoding by CNNs. However, such methods are limited in two ways: a) the handcrafted action features are difficult to handle challenging actions, and b) they generally require complex CNN models to improve action recognition accuracy, which usually occur heavy computational burden. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a novel AFE-CNN, which devotes to enhance the features of 3D skeleton-based actions to adapt to challenging actions. We propose feature enhance modules from key joint, bone vector, key frame and temporal perspectives, thus the AFE-CNN is more robust to camera views and body sizes variation, and significantly improve the recognition accuracy on challenging actions. Moreover, our AFE-CNN adopts a light-weight CNN model to decode images with action feature enhanced, which ensures a much lower computational burden than the state-of-the-art methods. We evaluate the AFE-CNN on three benchmark skeleton-based action datasets: NTU RGB+D, NTU RGB+D 120, and UTKinect-Action3D, with extensive experimental results demonstrate our outstanding performance of AFE-CNN.

PoseGU: 3D Human Pose Estimation with Novel Human Pose Generator and Unbiased Learning

3D pose estimation has recently gained substantial interests in computer vision domain. Existing 3D pose estimation methods have a strong reliance on large size well-annotated 3D pose datasets, and they suffer poor model generalization on unseen poses due to limited diversity of 3D poses in training sets. In this work, we propose PoseGU, a novel human pose generator that generates diverse poses with access only to a small size of seed samples, while equipping the Counterfactual Risk Minimization to pursue an unbiased evaluation objective. Extensive experiments demonstrate PoseGU outforms almost all the state-of-the-art 3D human pose methods under consideration over three popular benchmark datasets. Empirical analysis also proves PoseGU generates 3D poses with improved data diversity and better generalization ability.

Emergence of quasiparticle multiplets in curium

A combination of the density functional theory and the single-site dynamical mean-field theory is employed to study the electronic structures of various allotropes of elemental curium (Cm-I, Cm-II, and Cm-III). We find that the 5$f$ valence electrons in the high-symmetry Cm-I and Cm-II phases remain localized, while they turn into itinerancy in the low-symmetry monoclinic Cm-III phase. In addition, conspicuous quasiparticle multiplets are identified in the 5$f$ electronic density of states of the Cm-III phase. We believe that it is the many-body transition between $5f^{7}$ and $5f^{8}$ configurations that gives rise to these quasiparticle multiplets. Therefore, the Cm-III phase is probably a new realization of the so-called Racah metal.

Reexaming the ground state and magnetic properties of curium dioxide

The ground state electronic structure and magnetic behaviors of curium dioxide (CmO$_{2}$) are controversial. In general, the formal valence of Cm ions in CmO$_{2}$ should be tetravalent. It implies a $5f^{6.0}$ electronic configuration and a non-magnetic ground state. However, it is in sharp contrast with the large magnetic moment measured by painstaking experiments. In order to clarify this contradiction, we tried to study the ground state electronic structure of CmO$_{2}$ by means of a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory. We find that CmO$_{2}$ is a wide-gap charge transfer insulator with strong 5$f$ valence state fluctuation. It belongs to a mixed-valence compound indeed. The predominant electronic configurations for Cm ions are $5f^{6.0}$ and $5f^{7.0}$. The resulting magnetic moment agrees quite well with the experimental value. Therefore, the magnetic puzzle in CmO$_{2}$ can be appropriately explained by the mixed-valence scenario.

Signatures of Hundness in Kagome Metals

By means of the density functional theory in combination with the dynamical mean-field theory, we tried to examine the electronic structure of hexagonal FeGe, in which the Fe atoms form a quasi-2D layered Kagome lattice. We predict that it is a representative Kagome metal characterized by orbital selective Dirac fermions and extremely flat bands. Furthermore, Fe's 3$d$ electrons are strongly correlated. They exhibit quite apparent signatures of electronic correlation induced by Hund's rule coupling, such as sizable differentiation in band renormalization, non-Fermi-liquid behavior, spin-freezing state, and spin-orbital separation. Thus, FeGe can be regarded as an ideal platform to study the interplay of Kagome physics and Hundness. 5

Exploring the exotic f states of prototype compounds CeSb and USb

To unravel the interplay between the strong electronic correlation and itinerant-localized dual nature in atypical f electron systems, we employed the density functional theory in combination with the single-site dynamical mean-field theory to systematically investigate the electronic structures of CeSb and USb. We find that the 4f states in CeSb are mostly localized which show a weak quasi-particle resonance peak near the Fermi level. Conversely, the 5f electrons in USb display partially itinerant feature, accompanied by mixed-valence behavior and prominent valence state fluctuations. Particularly, the 4f electronic correlations in CeSb are distinctly orbital-selective with strikingly renormalized 4f5/2 states, according to the low-energy behaviors of 4f self-energy functions. It is believed that the strong electronic correlation and fantastic bonding of f states contribute to elucidate the fascinating magnetism.

Nature of the 5$f$ electronic structure of plutonium

Plutonium (Pu), in which the 5$f$ valence electrons always wander the boundary between localized and itinerant states, exhibits quite complex crystal structures and unprecedentedly anomalous properties with respect to temperature and alloying. Understanding its chemical and physical properties, especially its 5$f$ electronic structure is one of the central and unsolved topics in condensed matter theory. In the present work, the electronic structures of the six allotropes of Pu (including its $α$, $β$, $γ$, $δ$, $δ'$, and $ε$ phases) at ambient pressure are studied comprehensively by means of the density functional theory in combination with the single-site dynamical mean-field theory. The band structures, total and partial density of states, valence state histograms, 5$f$ orbital occupancies, X-ray branching ratios, and self-energy functions are carefully studied. It is suggested that the $α$, $β$, and $γ$ phases of Pu are typical Racah metals in which the atomic multiple effect dominates near the Fermi level. The calculated results reveal that not only the $δ$ phase, but also all the six allotropes are archetypal mixed-valence metals with remarkable atomic eigenstate fluctuation. In consequence of that, the 5$f$ occupancy $n_{5f}$ is around 5.1 $\sim$ 5.4, which varies with respect to the atomic volume and electronic correlation strength of Pu. The 5$f$ electronic correlation in Pu is moderately orbital-dependent. Moreover, the 5$f$ electrons in the $δ'$ phase are the most correlated and localized.

Unraveling the 4f electronic structures of cerium monopnictides

In order to unveil the 4f electronic structures in cerium monopnictides (CeX, where X = N, P, As, Sb, and Bi), we employed a state-of-the-art first-principles many-body approach, namely the density functional theory in combination with the single-site dynamical mean-field theory, to make detailed calculations. We find that the 4f electrons in CeN are highly itinerant and mixed-valence, showing a prominent quasi-particle peak near the Fermi level. On the contrary, they become well localized and display weak valence fluctuation in CeBi. It means that a 4f itinerant-localized crossover could emerge upon changing the X atom from N to Bi. Moreover, according to the low-energy behaviors of 4f self-energy functions, we could conclude that the 4f electrons in CeX also demonstrate interesting orbital-selective electronic correlations, which are similar to the other cerium-based heavy fermion compounds.

Combined Semilocal Exchange Potential with Dynamical Mean-Field Theory

The modern semilocal exchange potential is an accurate and efficient approximation to the exact exchange potential of density functional theory. We tried to combine it with the dynamical mean-field theory to derive a new first-principles many-body approach for studying correlated electronic materials. As a paradigm, this approach was employed to investigate the electronic structures and optical properties of strongly correlated ionic insulator YbS. Compared to the standard density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory which surprisingly failed to give an insulating solution, the new approach correctly captured all of the important characteristics of YbS. Not only an energy gap between a fully occupied Yb-4$f$ state and an unoccupied conduction band, but also an absence of Drude peak in the optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ were successfully reproduced.

Density-functional study of plutonium monoxide monohydride

The structural, electronic, mechanical, optical, thermodynamic properties of plutonium monoxide monohydride (PuOH) are studied by density-functional calculations within the framework of LDA/GGA and LDA/GGA+U.From the total energy calculation, the lowest-energy crystal structure of PuOH is predicted to have space group F-43m (No. 216). Within the LDA+U framework, the calculated lattice parameter of F-43m-PuOH is in good agreement with the experimental value and the corresponding ground state is predicted to be an antiferromagnetic charge-transfer insulator. Furthermore, we investigate the bonding character of PuOH by analyzing the electron structure and find that there are a stronger Pu-O bond and a weaker Pu-H bond. The mechanical properties including the elastic constants, elastic moduli and Debye's temperature, and the optical properties including the reflectivity and absorption coefficient are also calculated. We then compute the phonon spectrum which verified the dynamical stability of F-43m-PuOH. Some thermodynamic quantities such as the specific heat are evaluated. Finally we calculate the formation energy of PuOH, and the reaction energies for the oxidation of PuOH and PuOH-coated Pu, which are in reasonable agreement with the experimental values.

Energetics of point defects in aluminum via orbital-free density functional theory

The formation and migration energies for various point defects, including vacancies and self-interstitials in aluminum are reinvestigated systematically using the supercell approximation in the framework of orbital-free density functional theory. In particular, the finite-size effects and the accuracy of various kinetic energy density functionals are examined. The calculated results suggest that the errors due to the finite-size effect decrease exponentially upon enlarging the supercell. It is noteworthy that the formation energies of self-interstitials converge much slower than that of vacancy. With carefully chosen kinetic energy density functionals, the calculated results agree quite well with the available experimental data and those obtained by Kohn-Sham density functional theory which has exact kinetic term.

Pressure-driven 4$f$ localized-itinerant crossover in heavy fermion compound CeIn$_{3}$: A first-principles many-body perspective

The localized-itinerant nature of Ce-4$f$ valence electrons in heavy fermion compound CeIn$_{3}$ under pressure is studied thoroughly by means of the combination of density functional theory and single-site dynamical mean-field theory. The detailed evolutions of electronic structures of CeIn$_{3}$, including total and partial density of states, momentum-resolved spectral functions, and valence state histograms etc., are calculated in a wide pressure range where the corresponding volume compression $V/V_0 \in [0.6,1.0]$ (here $V_0$ is the experimental crystal volume) at $T \cong 116$ K. Upon increasing pressure, two strong peaks associated with the Ce-$4f$ states emerge near the Fermi level, and the $c$-$f$ hybridization and valence state fluctuation are enhanced remarkably. Moreover, the kinetic and potential energies raise, while the occupancy, total angular momentum, and low-energy scattering rate of the Ce-$4f$ electrons decline with respect to pressure. All the physical observables considered here exhibit prominent kinks or fluctuations in $V/V_0 \in [0.80,0.90]$, which are probably the desired fingerprints for the Ce-4$f$ localized-itinerant crossover.

Three-dimensional bulk electronic structure of the Kondo lattice CeIn3 revealed by photoemission

We show the three-dimensional electronic structure of the Kondo lattice CeIn3 using soft x-ray angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy in the paramagnetic state. For the first time, we have directly observed the three-dimensional topology of the Fermi surface of CeIn3 by photoemission. The Fermi surface has a complicated hole pocket centred at the Γ-Z line and an elliptical electron pocket centred at the R point of the Brillouin zone. Polarization and photon-energy dependent photoemission results both indicate the nearly localized nature of the 4f electrons in CeIn3, consistent with the theoretical prediction by means of the combination of density functional theory and single-site dynamical meanfield theory. Those results illustrate that the f electrons of CeIn3, which is the parent material of CeMIn5 compounds, are closer to the localized description than the layered CeMIn5 compounds.
