Gapless Spin Liquid Behavior in A Kagome Heisenberg Antiferromagnet with Randomly Distributed Hexagons of Alternate Bonds

We demonstrate that the new single crystal of YCu$_3$[OH(D)]$_{6.5}$Br$_{2.5}$ (YCOB) is a kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHA) without evident orphan spins ($\ll$ 0.8\%). The site mixing between polar OH$^-$ and non-polar Br$^-$ causes local distortions of Cu-O-Cu exchange paths, and gives rise to 70(2)\% of randomly distributed hexagons of alternate bonds ($\sim$ $J_1-ΔJ$ and $J_1+ΔJ$) and the rest of almost uniform hexagons ($\sim$ $J_1$) on the kagome lattice. Simulations of the random exchange model with $ΔJ$/$J_1$ = 0.7(1) show good agreement with the experimental observations, including the weak upturn seen in susceptibility and the slight polarization in magnetization. Despite the average antiferromagnetic coupling of $J_1$ $\sim$ 60 K, no conventional freezing is observed down to $T$ $\sim$ 0.001$J_1$, and the raw specific heat exhibits a nearly quadratic temperature dependence below 1 K $\sim$ 0.02$J_1$, phenomenologically consistent with a gapless (spin gap $\leq$ 0.025$J_1$) Dirac quantum spin liquid (QSL). Our result sheds new light on the theoretical understanding of the randomness-relevant gapless QSL behavior in YCOB, as well as in other relevant materials.

Gapless quantum spin liquid ground state in the two-dimensional spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$

Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel state of matter which refuses the conventional spin freezing even at 0 K. Experimentally searching for the structurally perfect candidates is a big challenge in condensed matter physics. Here we report the successful synthesis of a new spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ with R$\bar{3}$m symmetry. The compound with an ideal two-dimensional and spatial isotropic magnetic triangular-lattice has no site-mixing magnetic defects and no antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. No spin freezing down to 60 mK (despite $Θ$$_w$ $\sim$ -4 K), the low-T power-law temperature dependence of heat capacity and nonzero susceptibility suggest that YbMgGaO$_4$ is a promising gapless ($\leq$ $|$$Θ$$_w$$|$/100) QSL candidate. The residual spin entropy, which is accurately determined with a non-magnetic reference LuMgGaO$_4$, approaches zero ($<$ 0.6 \%). This indicates that the possible QSL ground state (GS) of the frustrated spin system has been experimentally achieved at the lowest measurement temperatures.

The form and the origin of the orbital ordering in the electronic nematic phase of the Iron-based superconductors

We investigated the form of the orbital ordering in the electronic nematic phase of the Iron-based superconductors by applying a group theoretical analysis on a realistic five-band model. We find the orbital order can be either of the inter-orbital s-wave form or the intra-orbital d-wave form. From the comparison with existing ARPES measurements of band splitting, we find the orbital ordering in the 122 system is dominated by an intra-orbital d-wave component, while that in the 111 system is dominated by an inter-orbital s-wave component. We find both forms of orbital order are strongly entangled with the nematicity in the spin correlation of the system. The condensation energy of the magnetic ordered phase is found to be significantly improved(by more than 20 percents) when the degeneracy between the $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ ordering pattern is lifted by the orbital order. We argue there should be large difference in both the scattering rate and the size of the possible pseudogap on the electron pocket around the $\mathrm{X}=(π,0)$ and $\mathrm{Y}=(0,π)$ point in the electronic nematic phase. We propose this as a possible origin for the observed nematicity in resistivity measurements.

On the high energy spin excitations in the high temperature superconductors: an RVB theory

The high energy spin excitation in the high T$_{c}$ cuprates is studied in the single mode approximation for the $t-t'-J$ model. An exact form for the mode dispersion is derived. When the Gutzwiller projected BCS state is used as the variational ground state, a spin-wave-like dispersion of about 2.2$J$ is uncovered along the $Γ=(0,0)$ to $\mathrm{M}=(π,0)$ line. Both the mode energy and the integrated intensity of the spin fluctuation spectrum are found to be almost doping independent in large doping range, which agrees very well with the observations of recent RIXS measurements. Together with previous studies on the quasiparticle properties of the Gutzwiiler projected BCS state, our results indicate that such a Fermionic RVB theory can provide a consistent description of both the itinerant and the local aspect of electronic excitations in the high T$_{c}$ cuprates.
