Electrical transport and magnetic properties of the triangular-lattice compound Zr$_2$NiP$_2$

We report the first investigation of the electrical and magnetic properties of the triangular-lattice compound Zr$_2$NiP$_2$ (space group $P$6$_3$/$mmc$). The temperature evolution of electrical resistivity follows the Bloch-Grüneisen-Mott law, and exhibits a typically metallic behavior. No transition is visible by both electrical and magnetic property measurements, and nearly no magnetization is detected ($M_0$ $<$ 0.002$μ_\mathrm{B}$/Ni) down to 1.8 K up to 7 T. The metallic and nonmagnetic characters are well understood by the first-principles calculations for Zr$_2$NiP$_2$.

Possible coexistence of short-range resonating-valence-bond and long-range stripe correlations in the spatially anisotropic triangular-lattice quantum magnet Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$NO$_3$

We show that short-range resonating-valence-bond correlations and long-range order can coexist in the ground state (GS) of a frustrated spin system. Our study comprises a comprehensive investigation of the quantum magnetism on the structurally disorder-free single crystal of Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$NO$_3$, which realizes the $s$ = 1/2 Heisenberg model on a spatially anisotropic triangular lattice. Competing exchange interactions determined by fitting the magnetization measured up to 55 T give rise to an exotic GS wavefunction with coexistence of the dominant short-range resonating-valence-bond correlations and weak long-range stripe order (ordered moment $M_0$ = $|\langle s_i^z\rangle|$ $\sim$ 0.02). At low temperatures, a first-order spin-flop transition is visible at $\sim$ 1-3 T. As the applied field further increases, another two magnetic-field-induced quantum phase transitions are observed at $\sim$ 14-19 and $\sim$ 46-52 T, respectively. Simulations of the Heisenberg exchange model show semi-quantitative agreement with the magnetic-field modulation of these unconventional phases, as well as the absence of visible magnetic reflections in neutron diffraction, thus supporting the GS of the spin system of Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$NO$_3$ may be approximate to a quantum spin liquid. Our study establishes structurally disorder-free magnetic materials with spatially anisotropic exchange interactions as a possible arena for spin liquids.

Gapless Spin Liquid Behavior in A Kagome Heisenberg Antiferromagnet with Randomly Distributed Hexagons of Alternate Bonds

We demonstrate that the new single crystal of YCu$_3$[OH(D)]$_{6.5}$Br$_{2.5}$ (YCOB) is a kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHA) without evident orphan spins ($\ll$ 0.8\%). The site mixing between polar OH$^-$ and non-polar Br$^-$ causes local distortions of Cu-O-Cu exchange paths, and gives rise to 70(2)\% of randomly distributed hexagons of alternate bonds ($\sim$ $J_1-ΔJ$ and $J_1+ΔJ$) and the rest of almost uniform hexagons ($\sim$ $J_1$) on the kagome lattice. Simulations of the random exchange model with $ΔJ$/$J_1$ = 0.7(1) show good agreement with the experimental observations, including the weak upturn seen in susceptibility and the slight polarization in magnetization. Despite the average antiferromagnetic coupling of $J_1$ $\sim$ 60 K, no conventional freezing is observed down to $T$ $\sim$ 0.001$J_1$, and the raw specific heat exhibits a nearly quadratic temperature dependence below 1 K $\sim$ 0.02$J_1$, phenomenologically consistent with a gapless (spin gap $\leq$ 0.025$J_1$) Dirac quantum spin liquid (QSL). Our result sheds new light on the theoretical understanding of the randomness-relevant gapless QSL behavior in YCOB, as well as in other relevant materials.

Organized Self-Emulsification toward Structural Color

The formation of water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double emulsions can be well-controlled through an organized self-emulsification mechanism in the presence of rigid bottlebrush amphiphilic block copolymers. Nanoscale water droplets with well-controlled diameters form ordered spatial arrangements within the micron-scale oil droplets. Upon solvent evaporation, solid microspheres with hexagonal close packed nanopore arrays are obtained resulting in bright structural colors. The reflected color is precisely tunable across the whole visible light range through tailoring contour length of the bottlebrush molecule. In-situ observation of the W/O interface using confocal laser scanning microscopy provides insights into the mechanism of the organized self-emulsification. This work provides a powerful strategy for the fabrication of structural colored materials in an easy and scalable manner.

Persistent spin dynamics in the pressurized spin-liquid candidate YbMgGaO$_4$

Single-crystal x-ray diffraction, density-functional band-structure calculations, and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) are used to probe pressure evolution of the triangular spin-liquid candidate YbMgGaO$_4$. The rhombohedral crystal structure is retained up to at least 10 GPa and shows a nearly uniform compression along both in-plane and out-of-plane directions, whereas local distortions caused by the random distribution of Mg$^{2+}$ and Ga$^{3+}$ remain mostly unchanged. The $μ$SR data confirm persistent spin dynamics up to 2.6 GPa and down to 250 mK with no change in the muon relaxation rate. Longitudinal-field $μ$SR reveals power-law behavior of the spin-spin autocorrelation function, both at ambient pressure and upon compression.

Spin liquids in geometrically perfect triangular antiferromagnets

The cradle of quantum spin liquids, triangular antiferromagnets show strong proclivity to magnetic order and require deliberate tuning to stabilize a spin-liquid state. In this brief review, we juxtapose recent theoretical developments that trace the parameter regime of the spin-liquid phase, with experimental results for Co-based and Yb-based triangular antiferromagnets. Unconventional spin dynamics arising from both ordered and disordered ground states is discussed, and the notion of a geometrically perfect triangular system is scrutinized to demonstrate non-trivial imperfections that may assist magnetic frustration in stabilizing dynamic spin states with peculiar excitations.

Absence of zero-point entropy in a triangular Ising antiferromagnet

Frustrated Ising magnets host exotic excitations, such as magnetic monopoles in spin ice. The ground state (GS) in this case is characterized by an extensive degeneracy and associated residual entropy going back to the pioneering work by G. Wannier who established large residual entropy of nearly 50%Rln2 per mole spins in a triangular Ising antiferromagnet (TIAF) already in 1950. Here, we endeavor to verify this result experimentally using TmMgGaO4, a novel rare-earth-based frustrated antiferromagnet with Ising spins arranged on a perfect triangular lattice. Contrary to theoretical expectations, we find almost no residual entropy and ascribe this result to the presence of a weak second-neighbor coupling J2zz ~ 0.09J1zz that lifts the GS degeneracy and gives rise to several ordered states, the stripe order, 1/3-plateau, and 1/2-plateau. TmMgGaO4 gives experimental access to these novel phases of Ising spins on the triangular lattice.

$μ$SR evidence for the U(1) quantum spin liquid ground state in the triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$

Muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) experiments on single crystals of the structurally perfect triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ indicate the absence of both static long-range magnetic order and spin freezing down to 0.048 K in zero field. Below 0.4 K, the $μ^{+}$ spin relaxation rates, which are proportional to the dynamic correlation function of the Yb$^{3+}$ spins, exhibit temperature-independent plateaus. Same behavior is revealed by temperature-independent local susceptibilities extracted from the Knight shifts of the $μ^{+}$ spin rotation frequencies under a transverse field of 20 Oe. All these $μ$SR results unequivocally support the formation of a gapless U(1) quantum spin liquid ground state in the triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$.

Gapless quantum spin liquid ground state in the two-dimensional spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$

Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel state of matter which refuses the conventional spin freezing even at 0 K. Experimentally searching for the structurally perfect candidates is a big challenge in condensed matter physics. Here we report the successful synthesis of a new spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet YbMgGaO$_4$ with R$\bar{3}$m symmetry. The compound with an ideal two-dimensional and spatial isotropic magnetic triangular-lattice has no site-mixing magnetic defects and no antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) interactions. No spin freezing down to 60 mK (despite $Θ$$_w$ $\sim$ -4 K), the low-T power-law temperature dependence of heat capacity and nonzero susceptibility suggest that YbMgGaO$_4$ is a promising gapless ($\leq$ $|$$Θ$$_w$$|$/100) QSL candidate. The residual spin entropy, which is accurately determined with a non-magnetic reference LuMgGaO$_4$, approaches zero ($<$ 0.6 \%). This indicates that the possible QSL ground state (GS) of the frustrated spin system has been experimentally achieved at the lowest measurement temperatures.

Rare-earth triangular lattice spin liquid: a single-crystal study of YbMgGaO$_{4}$

YbMgGaO$_{4}$, a structurally perfect two-dimensional triangular lattice with odd number of electrons per unit cell and spin-orbit entangled effective spin-1/2 local moments of Yb$^{3+}$ ions, is likely to experimentally realize the quantum spin liquid ground state. We report the first experimental characterization of single crystal YbMgGaO$_{4}$ samples. Due to the spin-orbit entanglement, the interaction between the neighboring Yb$^{3+}$ moments depends on the bond orientations and is highly anisotropic in the spin space. We carry out the thermodynamic and the electron spin resonance measurements to confirm the anisotropic nature of the spin interaction as well as to quantitatively determine the couplings. Our result is a first step towards the theoretical understanding of the possible quantum spin liquid ground state in this system and sheds new lights on the search of quantum spin liquids in strong spin-orbit coupled insulators.

Re-entrance of Gapless Quantum Spin Liquids Observed in a Newly Synthesized Spin-1/2 Kagome Antiferromagnet $ZnCu_{3}(OH)_{6}SO_{4}$

Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel state of matter with exotic excitations and was theoretically predicted to be realized most possibly in an S=1/2 kagome antiferromagnet. Experimentally searching for the candidate materials is a big challenge in condensed matter physics and only two such candidates were reported so far. Here we report the successful synthesis of a new spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet ZnCu3(OH)6SO4. No magnetic ordering is observed down to 50 mK, despite a moderately high Weiss temperature of θW ~ -79 K. It strongly suggests that the material is a new QSL candidate. Most interestingly, the magnetic specific heat clearly exhibits linear behaviors in two low-temperature regions. Both behaviors exactly correspond to two temperature-independent susceptibilities. These consistently reveal a novel re-entrance phenomenon of gapless QSL state at the lowest temperatures. The findings provide new insights into QSL ground and excited states and will inspire new theoretical and experimental studies.

Transition-metal distribution in kagome antiferromagnet CoCu3(OH)6Cl2 revealed by resonant x-ray diffraction

The distribution of chemically similar transition-metal ions is a fundamental issue in the study of herbertsmithite-type kagome antiferromagnets. Using synchrotron radiation, we have performed resonant powder x-ray diffractions on newly synthesized CoCu3(OH)6Cl2, which provide an exact distribution of transition-metal ions in the frustrated antiferromagnet. Both magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements are quantitatively consistent with the occupation fractions determined by resonant x-ray diffraction. The distribution of transition-metal ions and residual magnetic entropy suggest a novel low temperature (T < 4 K) magnetism, where the interlayer triangular spins undergo a spin-glass freezing while the kagome spins still keep highly frustrated.
