Possible Realization of Optical Quadratic and Dirac Points in Woodpile Photonic Crystals

The simulation of fermionic relativistic physics, e.g., Dirac and Weyl physics, has led to the discovery of many unprecedented phenomena in photonics, of which the optical-frequency realization is, however, still challenging. Here, surprisingly, we discover that the woodpile photonic crystals commonly used for optical frequency applications host exotic fermion-like relativistic degeneracies: a Dirac nodal line and a fourfold quadratic point, as protected by the nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry. Deforming the woodpile photonic crystal leads to the emergence of type-II Dirac points from the fourfold quadratic point. Such type-II Dirac points can be detected by its anomalous refraction property which is manifested as a giant birefringence in a slab setup. Our findings provide a promising route towards 3D optical Dirac physics in all-dielectric photonic crystals.

Anomalous Quadrupole Topological Insulators in 2D Nonsymmorphic Sonic Crystals

The discovery of quadrupole topology opens a new horizon in the study of topological phenomena. However, the existing experimental realizations of quadrupole topological insulators in symmorphic lattices with $π$-fluxes often break the protective mirror symmetry. Here, we present a theory for anomalous quadrupole topological insulators in nonsymmorphic crystals without flux, using 2D sonic crystals with $p4gm$ and $p2gg$ symmetry groups as concrete examples. We reveal that the anomalous quadrupole topology is protected by two orthogonal glide symmetries in square or rectangular lattices. The distinctive features of the anomalous quadrupole topological insulators include: (i) minimal four bands below the topological band gap, (ii) nondegenerate, gapped Wannier bands and special Wannier sectors with gapped composite Wannier bands, (iii) quantized Wannier band polarizations in these Wannier sectors. Remarkably, the protective glide symmetries are well-preserved in the sonic-crystal realizations where higher-order topological transitions can be triggered by symmetry or geometry engineering.

Photonic Chern insulators made of gyromagnetic hyperbolic metamaterials

Controlling light propagation using artificial photonic crystals and electromagnetic metamaterials is an important topic in the vibrant field of photonics. Notably, chiral edge states on the surface or at the interface of photonic Chern insulators can be used to make reflection-free waveguides. Here, by both theoretical analysis and electromagnetic simulations, we demonstrate that gyromagnetic hyperbolic metamaterials (GHM) are photonic Chern insulators with superior properties. As a novel mechanism, the simultaneous occurrence of the hyperbolic and gyromagnetic effects in these metamaterials is shown to open the large topological band gaps with gap Chern number of one. Importantly, unlike many other photonic Chern insulators, the GHM Chern insulators possess non-radiative chiral edge modes on their surfaces, and thus allow to fabricate unidirectional waveguides without cladding metals which generally incurr considerable Ohmic loss. Furthermore, the photonic edge states in the proposed Chern insulators are robust against disorder on a wide range of length scales, in strong contrast to crystalline topological insulators, and the light flow direction on the surface of the Chern insulators can be easily flipped by switching the direction of an applied magnetic field. Fascinatingly, we find that negative refraction of the topological surface wave occurs at the boundary between the GHMs with the opposite signs of gyromagnetic parameters. Finally, we show that compared with other photonic topological materials such as chiral hyperbolic materials, the present GHM Chern insulators can be much easier to fabricate.

Symmetry-protected hierarchy of anomalous multipole topological band gaps in nonsymmorphic metacrystals

Symmetry and topology are two fundamental aspects of many quantum states of matter. Recently, new topological materials, higher-order topological insulators, were discovered, featuring, e.g., bulk-edge-corner correspondence that goes beyond the conventional topological paradigms. Here, we discover experimentally that the nonsymmorphic $p4g$ acoustic metacrystals host a symmetry-protected hierarchy of topological multipoles: the lowest band gap has a quantized Wannier dipole and can mimic the quantum spin Hall effect, while the second band gap exhibits quadrupole topology with anomalous Wannier bands. Such a topological hierarchy allows us to observe experimentally distinct, multiplexing topological phenomena and to reveal a topological transition triggered by the geometry-transition from the $p4g$ group to the $C_{4v}$ group which demonstrates elegantly the fundamental interplay between symmetry and topology. Our study demonstrates an instance that classical systems with controllable geometry can serve as powerful simulators for the discovery of novel topological states of matter and their phase transitions.

3D $Z_2$ Topological Nodes in Nonsymmorphic Photonic Crystals: Ultrastrong Coupling and Anomalous Refraction

We propose to simulate 3D Dirac points and line-nodes with nontrivial $Z_2$ topology in nonsymmorphic all-dielectric photonic-crystals with space-time reversal symmetry, which can be realized at infrared and microwave frequencies. Double degeneracy of all Bloch states in high symmetry planes is achieved via nonsymmorphic screw symmetries despite the fundamental obstacle of no Kramers degeneracy in photonic crystals. Two orthogonal screw axes lead to 3D $Z_2$ Dirac points on high symmetry Brillouin zone boundary lines. On the other hand, $Z_2$ line-nodes emerge as protected twofold degeneracy of Bloch bands with opposite mirror parities on the $k_z=0$ plane. The lowest frequency line-node is deterministic because of a degenerate-partner switching mechanism guaranteed by the fundamental properties of Maxwell equations and the nonsymmorphic screw symmetry. A pair of Fermi arcs with opposite chirality due to $Z_2$ topological Dirac points emerge below the light-line on (100) and (010) photonic-crystal-air interfaces. These robust surface states offer an unique opportunity to realize an "open cavity" with strong interaction between quantum emitters and engineered vacuum with nontrivial Berry phases --- an important step toward topological states of strongly interacting bosons. Realistic calculation for resonant coupling between cavity-photons and phonons in boron nitride thin film yields ultrastrong coupling with vacuum Rabi splitting reaching to $23\%$ of photon frequency. We also show that type-II Dirac cones have anomalous valley selective refraction: birefringence with both positive and negative refractions for one valley, while no refraction for the other.
