Fermi Surface Variation of Ce 4f-electrons in Hybridization Controlled Heavy-Fermion Systems

Ce 3d-4f resonant angle-resolved photoemission measurements on CeCoGe1.2_{1.2}Si0.8_{0.8} and CeCoSi2_{2} have been performed to understand the Fermi surface topology as a function of hybridization strength between Ce 4ff- and conduction electrons in heavy-fermion systems. We directly observe that the hole-like Ce 4ff-Fermi surfaces of CeCoSi2_{2} is smaller than that of CeCoGe1.2_{1.2}Si0.8_{0.8}, indicating the evolution of the Ce 4ff-Fermi surface with the increase of the hybridization strength. In comparision with LDA calculation, the Fermi surface variation cannot be understood even though the overall electronic structure are roughly explained, indicating the importance of strong correlation effects. We also discuss the relation between the Ce 4ff-Fermi surface variation and the Kondo peaks.

Strong Correlation Effects of A-site Ordered Perovskite CaCu3Ti4O12 revealed by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

We report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results of A-site ordered perovskite CaCu3_3Ti4_4O12_{12}. We have observed the clear band dispersions, which are shifted to the higher energy by 1.7 eV and show the band narrowing around 2 eV in comparison with the local density approximation calculations. In addition, the high energy multiplet structures of Cu 3d8d^8 final-states have been found around 8 - 13 eV. These results reveal that CaCu3_3Ti4_4O12_{12} is a Mott-type insulator caused by the strong correlation effects of the Cu 3dd electrons well hybridized with O 2pp states. Unexpectedly, there exist a very small spectral weight at the Fermi level in the insulator phase, indicating the existence of isolated metallic states.

Strongly hybridized electronic structure of YbAl2: An angle-resolved photoemission study

We report the electronic structure of a prototypical valence fluctuation system, YbAl2, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The observed band dispersions and Fermi surfaces are well described in terms of band structure calculations based on local density approximation. Strong hybridization between the conduction and 4f bands is identified on the basis of the periodic Anderson model. The evaluated small mass enhancement factor and the high Kondo temperature qualitatively agree with those obtained from thermodynamic measurements. Such findings suggest that the strong hybridization suppresses band renormalization and is responsible for the valence fluctuations in YbAl2.

Electronic-Structure-Driven Magnetic Ordering in a Kondo Semiconductor CeOs2Al10

We report the anisotropic changes in the electronic structure of a Kondo semiconductor CeOs2_2Al10_{10} across an anomalous antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (T0T_0) of 29 K, using optical conductivity spectra. The spectra along the aa- and cc-axes indicate that a cc-ff hybridization gap emerges from a higher temperature continuously across T0T_0. Along the b-axis, on the other hand, a different energy gap with a peak at 20 meV appears below 39 K, which is higher temperature than T0T_0, because of structural distortion. The onset of the energy gap becomes visible below T0T_0. Our observation reveals that the electronic structure as well as the energy gap opening along the b-axis due to the structural distortion induces antiferromagnetic ordering below T0T_0.

Exotic radiation from a photonic crystal excited by an ultra-relativistic electron beam

We report the observation of an exotic radiation (unconventional Smith-Purcell radiation) from a one-dimensional photonic crystal. The physical origin of the exotic radiation is direct excitation of the photonic bands by an ultra-relativistic electron beam. The spectrum of the exotic radiation follows photonic bands of a certain parity, in striking contrast to the conventional Smith-Purcell radiation, which shows solely a linear dispersion. Key ingredients for the observation are the facts that the electron beam is in an ultra-relativistic region and that the photonic crystal is finite. The origin of the radiation was identified by comparison of experimental and theoretical results.
