Search for the ηc(2S)/hc→ppˉη_c(2S)/h_c\to p\bar{p} decays and measurements of the χcJ→ppˉχ_{cJ}\to p\bar{p} branching fractions

Using a sample of 1.06×108 ψ(3686)1.06\times10^{8}~ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, the decays ηc(2S)→ppˉη_{c}(2S)\to p\bar{p} and hc→ppˉh_{c}\to p\bar{p} are searched for, where ηc(2S)η_c(2S) and hch_c are reconstructed in the decay chains ψ(3686)→γηc(2S)ψ(3686)\toγη_{c}(2S), ηc(2S)→ppˉη_{c}(2S)\to p\bar{p} and ψ(3686)→π0hcψ(3686)\toπ^{0}h_{c}, hc→ppˉh_{c}\to p\bar{p}, respectively. No significant signals are observed. The upper limits of the product branching fractions are determined to be B(ψ(3686)→γηc(2S))×B(ηc(2S)→ppˉ)<1.4×10−6\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\toγη_c(2S))\times\mathcal{B}(η_{c}(2S)\to p\bar{p})<1.4\times10^{-6} and B(ψ(3686)→π0hc)×B(hc→ppˉ)<1.3×10−7\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\toπ^0h_c)\times\mathcal{B}(h_{c}\to p\bar{p})<1.3\times10^{-7} at the 90% C.L.. The branching fractions for χcJ→ppˉχ_{cJ}\to p\bar{p} (J=0, 1, 2)(J=0,~1,~2) are also measured to be (24.5±0.8±1.3, 8.6±0.5±0.5, 8.4±0.5±0.5)×10−5(24.5\pm0.8\pm1.3,~8.6\pm0.5\pm0.5,~8.4\pm0.5\pm0.5)\times10^{-5}, which are the world's most precise measurements.

Amplitude Analysis of the D+→KS0π+π0D^+ \to K^0_S π^+ π^0 Dalitz Plot

We perform an analysis of the D+→KS0π+π0D^+ \to K^0_S π^+ π^0 Dalitz plot using a data set of 2.92 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collisions at the ψ(3770)ψ(3770) mass accumulated by the BESIII Experiment, in which 166694 candidate events are selected with a background of 15.1%. The Dalitz plot is found to be well-represented by a combination of six quasi-two-body decay channels (KS0ρ+K^0_Sρ^+, KS0ρ(1450)+K^0_Sρ(1450)^+, K‾∗0π+\overline{K}^{*0}π^+, K‾0(1430)0π+\overline{K}_0(1430)^0π^+, K‾(1680)0π+\overline{K}(1680)^0π^+, κ‾0π+\overlineκ^0π^+) plus a small non-resonant component. Using the fit fractions from this analysis, partial branching ratios are updated with higher precision than previous measurements.

Measurement of χcJχ_{cJ} decaying into η′K+K−η^{\prime}K^+K^-

Using (106.41±0.86)×106(106.41\pm 0.86) \times 10^{6} ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we study for the first time the decay χcJ→η′K+K−χ_{cJ}\toη'K^+K^-, where η′→γρ0η'\toγρ^{0} and η′→ηπ+π−η'\toηπ^+π^-. A partial wave analysis in the covariant tensor amplitude formalism is performed for the decay χc1→η′K+K−χ_{c1}\toη'K^+K^-. Intermediate processes χc1→η′f0(980)χ_{c1}\toη' f_0(980), χc1→η′f0(1710)χ_{c1}\toη' f_0(1710), χc1→η′f2′(1525)χ_{c1}\toη' f_2'(1525) and χc1→K0∗(1430)±K∓χ_{c1}\to K^*_0(1430)^{\pm}K^{\mp} (K0∗(1430)±→η′K±K^*_0(1430)^{\pm}\toη' K^{\pm}) are observed with statistical significances larger than 5σσ, and their branching fractions are measured.

Measurement of the D→K−π+D\to K^-π^+ strong phase difference in ψ(3770)→D0D‾0ψ(3770)\to D^0\overline{D}{}^0

We study D0D‾0D^0\overline{D}{}^0 pairs produced in e+e−e^+e^- collisions at s=3.773\sqrt{s}=3.773 GeV using a data sample of 2.92 fb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector. We measure the asymmetry AKπCP\mathcal{A}^{CP}_{Kπ} of the branching fractions of D→K−π+D \to K^-π^+ in CPCP-odd and CPCP-even eigenstates to be (12.7±1.3±0.7)×10−2(12.7\pm1.3\pm0.7)\times10^{-2}. AKπCP\mathcal{A}^{CP}_{Kπ} can be used to extract the strong phase difference δKπδ_{Kπ} between the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed process D‾0→K−π+\overline{D}{}^{0}\to K^-π^+ and the Cabibbo-favored process D0→K−π+D^0\to K^- π^+. Using world-average values of external parameters, we obtain cos⁡δKπ=1.02±0.11±0.06±0.01\cosδ_{Kπ} = 1.02\pm0.11\pm0.06\pm0.01. Here, the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third uncertainty arises from the external parameters. This is the most precise measurement of δKπδ_{Kπ} to date.

Measurement of the branching fraction for ψ(3686)→ωK+K−ψ(3686)\toωK^+ K^-

With 1.06×1081.06\times 10^8 ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, the branching fraction of ψ(3686)→ωK+K−ψ(3686) \to ωK^+ K^- is measured to be (1.54±0.04±0.11)×10−4(1.54 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.11) \times 10^{-4}. This is the most precise result to date, due to the largest ψ(3686)ψ(3686) sample, improved signal reconstruction efficiency, good simulation of the detector performance, and a more accurate knowledge of the continuum contribution. Using the branching fraction of J/ψ→ωK+K−J/ψ\to ωK^+ K^-, the ratio B(ψ(3868)→K+K−)/B(J/ψ→K+K−)\mathcal{B}(ψ(3868) \to K^+K^-) / \mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to K^+K^-) is determined to be (18.4±3.7) %(18.4 \pm 3.7)\,\%. This constitutes a significantly improved test of the 12 %12\,\% rule, with the uncertainty now dominated by the J/ψJ/ψ branching fraction.

Observation of e+e−→γX(3872)e^{+} e^{-} \to γX(3872) at BESIII

With data samples collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at center-of-mass energies from 4.009 to 4.420 GeV, the process e+e−→γX(3872)e^{+} e^{-} \to γX(3872) is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 6.3σ6.3σ. The measured mass of the X(3872)X(3872) is (3871.9±0.7stat.±0.2sys.3871.9\pm 0.7_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.2_{\rm sys.}) MeV/c2c^2, in agreement with previous measurements. Measurements of the product of the cross section σ[e+e−→γX(3872)]σ[e^{+} e^{-} \to γX(3872)] and the branching fraction B[X(3872)→π+π−J/ψ]\mathcal{B}[X(3872) \to π^{+} π^{-} J/ψ] at center-of-mass energies 4.009, 4.229, 4.260, and 4.360 GeV are reported. Our measurements are consistent with expectations for the radiative transition process Y(4260)→γX(3872)Y(4260) \to γX(3872).

Observation of J/ψ→ppˉa0(980)J/ψ\rightarrow p\bar{p}a_{0}(980) at BESIII

Using 2.25×1082.25\times10^{8} J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage rings, we observe for the first time the process J/ψ→ppˉa0(980)J/ψ\rightarrow p\bar{p}a_{0}(980), a0(980)→π0ηa_{0}(980)\rightarrow π^{0}η with a significance of 6.5σ6.5σ (3.2σ3.2σ including systematic uncertainties). The product branching fraction of J/ψ→ppˉa0(980)→ppˉπ0ηJ/ψ\rightarrow p\bar{p}a_{0}(980)\rightarrow p\bar{p}π^{0}η is measured to be (6.8±1.2±1.3)×10−5(6.8\pm1.2\pm1.3)\times 10^{-5}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. This measurement provides information on the a0a_{0} production near threshold coupling to ppˉp\bar{p} and improves the understanding of the dynamics of J/ψJ/ψ decays to four body processes.

Observation of Electromagnetic Dalitz decays J/ψ\to P e^+e^-

Based on a sample of (225.3\pm2.8)\times 10^{6} J/ψevents collected with the BESIII detector, the electromagnetic Dalitz decays of J/ψ\to P e^+e^-(P=η'/η/π^0) are studied. Precision Measurement of the Mass of the ττ Lepton

An energy scan near the ττ pair production threshold has been performed using the BESIII detector. About 2424 pb−1^{-1} of data, distributed over four scan points, was collected. This analysis is based on ττ pair decays to eeee, eμeμ, eheh, μμμμ, μhμh, hhhh, eρeρ, μρμρ and πρπρ final states, where hh denotes a charged ππ or KK. The mass of the ττ lepton is measured from a maximum likelihood fit to the ττ pair production cross section data to be mτ=(1776.91±0.12−0.13+0.10m_τ = (1776.91\pm0.12 ^{+0.10}_{-0.13}) MeV/c2c^2, which is currently the most precise value in a single measurement.

Precision measurements of B(D+→μ+νμ)B(D^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν_μ), the pseudoscalar decay constant fD+f_{D^+}, and the quark mixing matrix element ∣Vcd∣|V_{\rm cd}|

We report a measurement of the branching fraction B(D+→μ+νμ)=[3.71±0.19(stat)±0.06(sys)]×10−4B(D^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν_μ) = [3.71 \pm 0.19 (\rm stat) \pm 0.06 (\rm sys)]\times 10^{-4} based on 2.92 fb−1{\rm fb^{-1}} of data accumulated at s=3.773\sqrt{s}=3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. This measurement, in conjunction with the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element ∣Vcd∣|V_{\rm cd}| determined from a global Standard Model fit, implies a value for the weak decay constant fD+=(203.2±5.3±1.8)f_{D^+}=(203.2 \pm 5.3 \pm 1.8) MeV. Additionally, using this branching fraction measurement together with a Lattice QCD prediction for fD+f_{D^+}, we find ∣Vcd∣=0.2210±0.0058±0.0047|V_{\rm cd}|=0.2210\pm 0.0058 \pm 0.0047. In either case, these are the most precise results for these quantities to date.

Search for the radiative transitions ψ(3770)→γηcψ(3770)\toγη_c and γηc(2S)γη_c(2S)

By using a 2.92 fb−1^{-1} data sample taken at s=3.773\sqrt{s} = 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, we search for the radiative transitions ψ(3770)→γηcψ(3770)\toγη_c and γηc(2S)γη_c(2S) through the hadronic decays ηc(ηc(2S))→KS0K±π∓η_c(η_c(2S))\to K^0_SK^\pmπ^\mp. No significant excess of signal events above background is observed. We set upper limits at a 90% confidence level for the product branching fractions to be B(ψ(3770)→γηc)×B(ηc→KS0K±π∓)<1.6×10−5\mathcal{B}(ψ(3770)\toγη_c)\times \mathcal{B}(η_c\to K^0_SK^\pmπ^\mp) < 1.6\times10^{-5} and B(ψ(3770)→γηc(2S))×B(ηc(2S)→KS0K±π∓)<5.6×10−6\mathcal{B}(ψ(3770)\toγη_c(2S))\times \mathcal{B}(η_c(2S)\to K^0_SK^\pmπ^\mp) < 5.6\times10^{-6}. Combining our result with world-average values of B(ηc(ηc(2S))→KS0K±π∓)\mathcal{B}(η_c(η_c(2S))\to K^0_SK^\pmπ^\mp), we find the branching fractions B(ψ(3770)→γηc)<6.8×10−4\mathcal{B}(ψ(3770)\toγη_c) < 6.8\times10^{-4} and B(ψ(3770)→γηc(2S))<2.0×10−3\mathcal{B}(ψ(3770)\toγη_c(2S)) < 2.0\times10^{-3} at a 90% confidence level.

Study of e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} in the vicinity of ψ(3770)ψ(3770)

Using 2917 pb−1\rm{pb}^{-1} of data accumulated at 3.773~GeV\rm{GeV}, 44.5~pb−1\rm{pb}^{-1} of data accumulated at 3.65~GeV\rm{GeV} and data accumulated during a ψ(3770)ψ(3770) line-shape scan with the BESIII detector, the reaction e+e−→ppˉe^+e^-\rightarrow p\bar{p} is studied considering a possible interference between resonant and continuum amplitudes. The cross section of e+e−→ψ(3770)→ppˉe^+e^-\rightarrowψ(3770)\rightarrow p\bar{p}, σ(e+e−→ψ(3770)→ppˉ)σ(e^+e^-\rightarrowψ(3770)\rightarrow p\bar{p}), is found to have two solutions, determined to be (0.059±0.032±0.0120.059\pm0.032\pm0.012) pb with the phase angle ϕ=(255.8±37.9±4.8)∘ϕ= (255.8\pm37.9\pm4.8)^\circ (<<0.11 pb at the 90% confidence level), or σ(e+e−→ψ(3770)→ppˉ)=(2.57±0.12±0.12σ(e^+e^-\rightarrowψ(3770)\rightarrow p\bar{p}) = (2.57\pm0.12\pm0.12) pb with ϕ=(266.9±6.1±0.9)∘ϕ= (266.9\pm6.1\pm0.9)^\circ both of which agree with a destructive interference. A comparative study of optical/ultraviolet variability of narrow-line Seyfert 1 and broad-line Seyfert 1 active galactic nuclei

The ensemble optical/ultraviolet variability of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) type active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is investigated, based on a sample selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe-82 region with multi-epoch photometric scanning data. As a comparison a control sample of broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) type AGNs is also incorporated. To quantify properly the intrinsic variation amplitudes and their uncertainties, a novel method of parametric maximum-likelihood is introduced, that has, as we argued, certain virtues over previously used methods. The majority of NLS1-type AGNs exhibit significant variability on timescales from about ten days to a few years with, however, on average smaller amplitudes compared to BLS1-type AGNs. About 20 NLS1- type AGNs showing relatively large variations are presented, that may deserve future monitoring observations, for instance, reverberation mapping. The averaged structure functions of variability, constructed using the same maximumlikelihood method, show remarkable similarity in shape for the two types of AGNs on timescales longer than about 10 days, which can be approximated by a power-law or an exponential function. This, along with other similar properties, such as the wavelength-dependent variability, are indicative of a common dominant mechanism responsible for the long-term optical/UV variability of both NLS1- and BLS1-type AGNs. Towards the short timescales, however, there is tentative evidence that the structure function of NLS1-type AGNs continues declining, whereas that of BLS1-type AGNs flattens with some residual variability on timescales of days. If this can be confirmed, it may suggest that an alternative mechanism, such as X-ray reprocessing, starts to become dominating in BLS1-type AGNs, but not in NLS1-, on such timescales.

On Cui-Kano's Characterization Problem on Graph Factors

An HnH_n-factor of a graph GG is defined to be a spanning subgraph FF of GG such that each vertex has degree belonging to the set {1,3,5,...,2n−1,2n}\{1,3,5,...,2n-1,2n\} in FF. In this paper, we investigate HnH_n-factors of graphs by using Lovász's structural descriptions to the degree prescribed subgraph problem. We find some sufficient conditions for the existence of an HnH_n-factor of a graph. In particular, we make progress on the characterization problem for a special family of graphs proposed by Cui and Kano in 1988.

A Dusty Mg~II absorber Associated with the Quasar SDSS J003545.13+011441.2

We report on a dusty Mg~II absorber associated with the quasar SDSSJ003545.13+011441.2 (hereafter J0035+0114) at zz=1.5501, which is the strongest one among the three Mg~II absorbers along the sight line of quasar. The two low redshift intervening absorbers are at zz=0.7436, 0.5436, respectively. Based on the photometric and spectroscopic data of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (hereafter SDSS), we infer the rest frame color excess E(\bv) due to the associated dust is more than 0.07 by assuming a Small Magellanic Cloud (hereafter SMC) type extinction curve. Our follow-up moderate resolution spectroscopic observation at the 10-m Keck telescope with the ESI spectrometer enable us to reliably identify most of the important metal elements, such as Zn, Fe, Mn, Mg, Al, Si, Cr, and Ni in the associated system. We measure the column density of each species and detect significant dust depletion. In addition, we develop a simulation technique to gauge the significance of 2175-Å dust absorption bump on the SDSS quasar spectra. By using it, we analyze the SDSS spectrum of J0035+0114 for the presence of a associated 2175-Å extinction feature and report a tentative detection at ∼\sim2σσ significant level.

Dependence of the optical/UV variability on the emission line properties and Eddington ratio in active galactic nuclei

The dependence of the long-term optical/UV variability on the spectral and the fundamental physical parameters for radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is investigated. The multi-epoch repeated photometric scanning data in the Stripe-82 region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) are exploited for two comparative AGN samples (mostly quasars) selected therein, a broad-line Seyfert\,1 (BLS1) type sample and a narrow-line Seyfert\,1 (NLS1) type AGN sample within redshifts 0.3--0.8. Their spectral parameters are derived from the SDSS spectroscopic data. It is found that on rest-frame timescales of several years the NLS1-type AGNs show systematically smaller variability compared to the BLS1-type. In fact, the variability amplitude is found to correlate, though only moderately, with the Eigenvector\,1 parameters, i.e., the smaller the \hb\ linewidth, the weaker the [O\,III] and the stronger the \feii\ emission, the smaller the variability amplitude is. Moreover, an interesting inverse correlation is found between the variability and the Eddington ratio, which is perhaps more fundamental. The previously known dependence of the variability on luminosity is not significant, and that on black hole mass---as claimed in recent papers and also present in our data---fades out when controlling for the Eddington ratio in the correlation analysis, though these may be partly due to the limited ranges of luminosity and black hole mass of our samples. Our result strongly supports that an accretion disk is likely to play a major role in producing the opitcal/UV variability.
