New Horizons: Scalar and Vector Ultralight Dark Matter

The last decade has seen unprecedented effort in dark matter model building at all mass scales coupled with the design of numerous new detection strategies. Transformative advances in quantum technologies have led to a plethora of new high-precision quantum sensors and dark matter detection strategies for ultralight (<10 <10\,eV) bosonic dark matter that can be described by an oscillating classical, largely coherent field. This white paper focuses on searches for wavelike scalar and vector dark matter candidates.

A quantum-enhanced search for dark matter axions

In dark matter axion searches, quantum uncertainty manifests as a fundamental noise source, limiting the measurement of the quadrature observables used for detection. We use vacuum squeezing to circumvent the quantum limit in a search for a new particle. By preparing a microwave-frequency electromagnetic field in a squeezed state and near-noiselessly reading out only the squeezed quadrature, we double the search rate for axions over a mass range favored by recent theoretical projections. We observe no signature of dark matter axions in the combined 16.96−17.1216.96-17.12 and 17.14−17.28 μeV/c217.14-17.28\spaceμ\text{eV}/c^2 mass window for axion-photon couplings above gγ=1.38×gγKSVZg_γ = 1.38\times g_γ^\text{KSVZ}, reporting exclusion at the 90% level.

Separated Response Function Ratios in Exclusive, Forward pi^{+/-} Electroproduction

The study of exclusive π±π^{\pm} electroproduction on the nucleon, including separation of the various structure functions, is of interest for a number of reasons. The ratio RL=σLπ−/σLπ+R_L=σ_L^{π^-}/σ_L^{π^+} is sensitive to isoscalar contamination to the dominant isovector pion exchange amplitude, which is the basis for the determination of the charged pion form factor from electroproduction data. A change in the value of RT=σTπ−/σTπ+R_T=σ_T^{π^-}/σ_T^{π^+} from unity at small −t-t, to 1/4 at large −t-t, would suggest a transition from coupling to a (virtual) pion to coupling to individual quarks. Furthermore, the mentioned ratios may show an earlier approach to pQCD than the individual cross sections. We have performed the first complete separation of the four unpolarized electromagnetic structure functions above the dominant resonances in forward, exclusive π±π^{\pm} electroproduction on the deuteron at central Q2Q^2 values of 0.6, 1.0, 1.6 GeV2^2 at WW=1.95 GeV, and Q2=2.45Q^2=2.45 GeV2^2 at WW=2.22 GeV. Here, we present the LL and TT cross sections, with emphasis on RLR_L and RTR_T, and compare them with theoretical calculations. Results for the separated ratio RLR_L indicate dominance of the pion-pole diagram at low −t-t, while results for RTR_T are consistent with a transition between pion knockout and quark knockout mechanisms.

Separated Response Functions in Exclusive, Forward π±π^{\pm} Electroproduction on Deuterium

Background: Measurements of forward exclusive meson production at different squared four-momenta of the exchanged virtual photon, Q2Q^2, and at different four-momentum transfer, t, can be used to probe QCD's transition from meson-nucleon degrees of freedom at long distances to quark-gluon degrees of freedom at short scales. Ratios of separated response functions in π−π^- and π+π^+ electroproduction are particularly informative. The ratio for transverse photons may allow this transition to be more easily observed, while the ratio for longitudinal photons provides a crucial verification of the assumed pole dominance, needed for reliable extraction of the pion form factor from electroproduction data. Method: Data were acquired with 2.6-5.2 GeV electron beams and the HMS+SOS spectrometers in Jefferson Lab Hall C, at central Q2Q^2 values of 0.6, 1.0, 1.6 GeV2^2 at W=1.95 GeV, and Q2Q^2=2.45 GeV2^2 at W=2.22 GeV. There was significant coverage in ϕϕ and εε, which allowed separation of σL,T,LT,TTσ_{L,T,LT,TT}. Results: σLσ_L shows a clear signature of the pion pole, with a sharp rise at small -t. In contrast, σTσ_T is much flatter versus t. The longitudinal/transverse ratios evolve with Q2Q^2 and t, and at the highest Q2Q^2=2.45 GeV2^2 show a slight enhancement for π−π^- production compared to π+π^+. The π−/π+π^-/π^+ ratio for transverse photons exhibits only a small Q2Q^2-dependence, following a nearly universal curve with t, with a steep transition to a value of about 0.25, consistent with s-channel quark knockout. The σTT/σTσ_{TT}/σ_T ratio also drops rapidly with Q2Q^2, qualitatively consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. The π−/π+π^-/π^+ ratio for longitudinal photons indicates a small isoscalar contamination at W=1.95 GeV, consistent with what was observed in our earlier determination of the pion form factor at these kinematics.

Determination of the pion charge form factor for Q^2=0.60-1.60 GeV^2

The data analysis for the reaction H(e,e' pi^+)n, which was used to determine values for the charged pion form factor Fpi for values of Q^2=0.6-1.6 GeV^2, has been repeated with careful inspection of all steps and special attention to systematic uncertainties. Also the method used to extract Fpi from the measured longitudinal cross section was critically reconsidered. Final values for the separated longitudinal and transverse cross sections and the extracted values of Fpi are presented.
