Ultrastable Metallic Glass Nanoparticles with Size-Dependent Mechanical Properties

The atomistic structure of metallic glasses is closely related to properties such as strength and ductility. Here, Ni1-xBx metallic glass nanoparticles of two different sizes are compressed under quasi-hydrostatic high-pressure conditions in order to understand structural changes under stress. The structural changes in the nanoparticles were tracked using in situ high-pressure X-ray diffraction (XRD). The ambient pressure pair-distribution functions generated from XRD showed that the smaller sized nanoparticles had a more compact amorphous structure with lower coordination number. XRD showed that the amorphous structure was stable up to the maximum pressures achieved. The bulk modulus of the smaller and larger sized nanoparticles was found to be 208 GPa and 178 GPa, respectively. This size-dependent high-pressure behavior was related to compositional differences between the nanoparticles. These results show that Ni1-xBx metallic glass nanoparticles are highly stable under pressure, which could enable their use as inclusions in metal or ceramic matrix composites.

Coexistence of multiple metastable polytypes in rhombohedral bismuth

Derivative structural polytypes coexisting with the rhombohedral A7 structure of elemental bismuth (Bi) have been discovered at ambient condition, based on microstructure analyses of pure Bi samples treated under high pressure and high temperature conditions. Three structures with atomic positions close to those of the A7 structure have been identified through first-principles calculations, showing these polytypes energetically comparable to the A7 structure under ambient condition. Simulated diffraction data are in excellent agreement with the experimental observations. We argue that previously reported variations in physical properties (e.g., density, melting point, electrical conductivity, and magnetism) in bismuth could be due to the formation of these polytypes. The coexistence of metastable derivative structural polytypes may be a widely occurring phenomenon in other elemental materials

Pressure-induced isostructural phase transition and correlation of FeAs coordination with the superconducting properties of 111-type Na1-xFeAs

The effect of pressure on the crystalline structure and superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of the 111-type Na1-xFeAs system using in situ high pressure synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and diamond anvil cell techniques is studied. A pressure-induced tetragonal to tetragonal isostructural phase transition was found. The systematic evolution of the FeAs4 tetrahedron as a function of pressure based on Rietveld refinements on the powder x-ray diffraction patterns was obtained. The non-monotonic Tc(P) behavior of Na1-xFeAs is found to correlate with the anomalies of the distance between the anion (As) and the iron layer as well as the bond angle between As-Fe-As for the two tetragonal phases. This behavior provides the key structural information in understanding the origin of the pressure dependence of Tc for 111-type iron pnictide superconductors. A pressure-induced structural phase transition is also observed at 20 GPa.
