Abnormal Signal Recognition with Time-Frequency Spectrogram: A Deep Learning Approach

With the increasingly complex and changeable electromagnetic environment, wireless communication systems are facing jamming and abnormal signal injection, which significantly affects the normal operation of a communication system. In particular, the abnormal signals may emulate the normal signals, which makes it very challenging for abnormal signal recognition. In this paper, we propose a new abnormal signal recognition scheme, which combines time-frequency analysis with deep learning to effectively identify synthetic abnormal communication signals. Firstly, we emulate synthetic abnormal communication signals including seven jamming patterns. Then, we model an abnormal communication signals recognition system based on the communication protocol between the transmitter and the receiver. To improve the performance, we convert the original signal into the time-frequency spectrogram to develop an image classification algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively recognize the abnormal signals under various parameter configurations, even under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low jamming-to-signal ratio (JSR) conditions.

AoI-based Temporal Attention Graph Neural Network for Popularity Prediction and Content Caching

Along with the fast development of network technology and the rapid growth of network equipment, the data throughput is sharply increasing. To handle the problem of backhaul bottleneck in cellular network and satisfy people's requirements about latency, the network architecture like information-centric network (ICN) intends to proactively keep limited popular content at the edge of network based on predicted results. Meanwhile, the interactions between the content (e.g., deep neural network models, Wikipedia-alike knowledge base) and users could be regarded as a dynamic bipartite graph. In this paper, to maximize the cache hit rate, we leverage an effective dynamic graph neural network (DGNN) to jointly learn the structural and temporal patterns embedded in the bipartite graph. Furthermore, in order to have deeper insights into the dynamics within the evolving graph, we propose an age of information (AoI) based attention mechanism to extract valuable historical information while avoiding the problem of message staleness. Combining this aforementioned prediction model, we also develop a cache selection algorithm to make caching decisions in accordance with the prediction results. Extensive results demonstrate that our model can obtain a higher prediction accuracy than other state-of-the-art schemes in two real-world datasets. The results of hit rate further verify the superiority of the caching policy based on our proposed model over other traditional ways.

Edge Semantic Cognitive Intelligence for 6G Networks: Novel Theoretical Models, Enabling Framework, and Typical Applications

Edge intelligence is anticipated to underlay the pathway to connected intelligence for 6G networks, but the organic confluence of edge computing and artificial intelligence still needs to be carefully treated. To this end, this article discusses the concepts of edge intelligence from the semantic cognitive perspective. Two instructive theoretical models for edge semantic cognitive intelligence (ESCI) are first established. Afterwards, the ESCI framework orchestrating deep learning with semantic communication is discussed. Two representative applications are present to shed light on the prospect of ESCI in 6G networks. Some open problems are finally listed to elicit the future research directions of ESCI.

3D Spectrum Mapping Based on ROI-Driven UAV Deployment

Given the explosive growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices ranging from the two-dimensional (2D) ground to the three-dimensional (3D) space, it is a necessity to establish a 3D spectrum map to comprehensively present and effectively manage the 3D spatial spectrum resources in smart city infrastructures. By leveraging the popularity and location flexibility of the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), we are able to execute spatial sampling with these emerging flying spectrum-monitoring devices (SMDs) at will. In this paper, we first present a brief survey to show the state-of-the-art studies on spectrum mapping. Then, we introduce the 3D spectrum mapping model. Next, we propose a 3D spectrum mapping framework which is composed of pre-sampling, spectrum situation estimation, UAV deployment and spectrum recovery. Therein we develop a Region of Interest (ROI)-driven UAV deployment scheme, which selects new sampling points of the highest estimated interest and the lowest energy cost iteratively. Meanwhile, we slice the entire 3D spectrum map into a series of "images" and "repair" those unsampled locations. Furthermore, we provide an exemplary case study on the 3D spectrum mapping, where, for example, an important event is being held and the entire spectrum situation needs to be monitored in real time to deal with malicious interference sources. Lastly, the challenges and open issues are discussed.

Byzantine Attack and Defense in Cognitive Radio Networks: A Survey

The Byzantine attack in cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS), also known as the spectrum sensing data falsification (SSDF) attack in the literature, is one of the key adversaries to the success of cognitive radio networks (CRNs). In the past couple of years, the research on the Byzantine attack and defense strategies has gained worldwide increasing attention. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey and tutorial on the recent advances in the Byzantine attack and defense for CSS in CRNs. Specifically, we first briefly present the preliminaries of CSS for general readers, including signal detection techniques, hypothesis testing, and data fusion. Second, we analyze the spear and shield relation between Byzantine attack and defense from three aspects: the vulnerability of CSS to attack, the obstacles in CSS to defense, and the games between attack and defense. Then, we propose a taxonomy of the existing Byzantine attack behaviors and elaborate on the corresponding attack parameters, which determine where, who, how, and when to launch attacks. Next, from the perspectives of homogeneous or heterogeneous scenarios, we classify the existing defense algorithms, and provide an in-depth tutorial on the state-of-the-art Byzantine defense schemes, commonly known as robust or secure CSS in the literature. Furthermore, we highlight the unsolved research challenges and depict the future research directions.

Cellular-Base-Station Assisted Device-to-Device Communications in TV White Space

This paper presents a systematic approach to exploit TV white space (TVWS) for device-to-device (D2D) communications with the aid of the existing cellular infrastructure. The goal is to build a location-specific TVWS database, which provides a look-up table service for any D2D link to determine its maximum permitted emission power (MPEP) in an unlicensed digital TV (DTV) band. To achieve this goal, the idea of mobile crowd sensing is firstly introduced to collect active spectrum measurements from massive personal mobile devices. Considering the incompleteness of crowd measurements, we formulate the problem of unknown measurements recovery as a matrix completion problem and apply a powerful fixed point continuation algorithm to reconstruct the unknown elements from the known elements. By joint exploitation of the big spectrum data in its vicinity, each cellular base station further implements a nonlinear support vector machine algorithm to perform irregular coverage boundary detection of a licensed DTV transmitter. With the knowledge of the detected coverage boundary, an opportunistic spatial reuse algorithm is developed for each D2D link to determine its MPEP. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can successfully enable D2D communications in TVWS while satisfying the interference constraint from the licensed DTV services. In addition, to our best knowledge, this is the first try to explore and exploit TVWS inside the DTV protection region resulted from the shadowing effect. Potential application scenarios include communications between internet of vehicles in the underground parking, D2D communications in hotspots such as subway, game stadiums, and airports, etc.

On the Limits of Predictability in Real-World Radio Spectrum State Dynamics: From Entropy Theory to 5G Spectrum Sharing

A range of applications in cognitive radio networks, from adaptive spectrum sensing to predictive spectrum mobility and dynamic spectrum access, depend on our ability to foresee the state evolution of radio spectrum, raising a fundamental question: To what degree is radio spectrum state (RSS) predictable? In this paper, we explore the fundamental limits of predictability in RSS dynamics by studying the RSS evolution patterns in spectrum bands of several popular services, including TV bands, ISM bands, and Cellular bands, etc. From an information theory perspective, we introduce a methodology of using statistical entropy measures and Fano inequality to quantify the degree of predictability underlying real-world spectrum measurements. Despite the apparent randomness, we find a remarkable predictability, as large as 90%, in the real-world RSS dynamics over a number of spectrum bands for all popular services. Furthermore, we discuss the potential applications of prediction-based spectrum sharing in 5G wireless communications.

Big Spectrum Data: The New Resource for Cognitive Wireless Networking

The era of Big Data is here now, which has brought both unprecedented opportunities and critical challenges. In this article, from a perspective of cognitive wireless networking, we start with a definition of Big Spectrum Data by analyzing its characteristics in terms of six Vs, i.e., volume, variety, velocity, veracity, viability, and value. We then present a high-level tutorial on research frontiers in Big Spectrum Data analytics to guide the development of practical algorithms. We also highlight Big Spectrum Data as the new resource for cognitive wireless networking by presenting the emerging use cases.

Cognitive Internet of Things: A New Paradigm beyond Connection

Current research on Internet of Things (IoT) mainly focuses on how to enable general objects to see, hear, and smell the physical world for themselves, and make them connected to share the observations. In this paper, we argue that only connected is not enough, beyond that, general objects should have the capability to learn, think, and understand both physical and social worlds by themselves. This practical need impels us to develop a new paradigm, named Cognitive Internet of Things (CIoT), to empower the current IoT with a `brain' for high-level intelligence. Specifically, we first present a comprehensive definition for CIoT, primarily inspired by the effectiveness of human cognition. Then, we propose an operational framework of CIoT, which mainly characterizes the interactions among five fundamental cognitive tasks: perception-action cycle, massive data analytics, semantic derivation and knowledge discovery, intelligent decision-making, and on-demand service provisioning. Furthermore, we provide a systematic tutorial on key enabling techniques involved in the cognitive tasks. In addition, we also discuss the design of proper performance metrics on evaluating the enabling techniques. Last but not least, we present the research challenges and open issues ahead. Building on the present work and potentially fruitful future studies, CIoT has the capability to bridge the physical world (with objects, resources, etc.) and the social world (with human demand, social behavior, etc.), and enhance smart resource allocation, automatic network operation, and intelligent service provisioning.

Big Data Analytics in Future Internet of Things

Current research on Internet of Things (IoT) mainly focuses on how to enable general objects to see, hear, and smell the physical world for themselves, and make them connected to share the observations. In this paper, we argue that only connected is not enough, beyond that, general objects should have the capability to learn, think, and understand both the physical world by themselves. On the other hand, the future IoT will be highly populated by large numbers of heterogeneous networked embedded devices, which are generating massive or big data in an explosive fashion. Although there is a consensus among almost everyone on the great importance of big data analytics in IoT, to date, limited results, especially the mathematical foundations, are obtained. These practical needs impels us to propose a systematic tutorial on the development of effective algorithms for big data analytics in future IoT, which are grouped into four classes: 1) heterogeneous data processing, 2) nonlinear data processing, 3) high-dimensional data processing, and 4) distributed and parallel data processing. We envision that the presented research is offered as a mere baby step in a potentially fruitful research direction. We hope that this article, with interdisciplinary perspectives, will stimulate more interests in research and development of practical and effective algorithms for specific IoT applications, to enable smart resource allocation, automatic network operation, and intelligent service provisioning.
