Effective Out-of-Distribution Detection in Classifier Based on PEDCC-Loss

Deep neural networks suffer from the overconfidence issue in the open world, meaning that classifiers could yield confident, incorrect predictions for out-of-distribution (OOD) samples. Thus, it is an urgent and challenging task to detect these samples drawn far away from training distribution based on the security considerations of artificial intelligence. Many current methods based on neural networks mainly rely on complex processing strategies, such as temperature scaling and input preprocessing, to obtain satisfactory results. In this paper, we propose an effective algorithm for detecting out-of-distribution examples utilizing PEDCC-Loss. We mathematically analyze the nature of the confidence score output by the PEDCC (Predefined Evenly-Distribution Class Centroids) classifier, and then construct a more effective scoring function to distinguish in-distribution (ID) and out-of-distribution. In this method, there is no need to preprocess the input samples and the computational burden of the algorithm is reduced. Experiments demonstrate that our method can achieve better OOD detection performance.

2D clathrate graphene in minimum egg-tray-shape: An \textit{ab initio} study

The thriving area of synthetic carbon allotropes witnesses theoretic proposals and experimental syntheses of many new two-dimensional ultrathin structures, which are often achieved by careful arrangement of non-hexagon $\mathrm{sp^2}$ defects in graphene. Here, we introduce pyramid $\mathrm{sp^3}$ hybridization into $\mathrm{sp^2}$ network and propose a new carbon polymorph with clathrate pattern and with minimum egg-tray shape (termed as clathrate graphene). Eight symmetrically equivalent $\mathrm{sp^2}$ carbon atoms and two symmetrically equivalent $\mathrm{sp^2}$ carbon atoms in its tetragonal primitive unit cell form two perpendicularly oriented rectangles and four bridging hexagons. Though deformed bond lengths and bond angles, the planar geometry of both tetrarings and hexagons are retained. High percentage and small deformation of hexagons make this metastable $\mathrm{sp^2}$-$\mathrm{sp^3}$ allotrope comparable with pure $\mathrm{sp^2}$ $T$-graphene and penta-graphene in energetics. Exhaustive \textit{ab initio} calculations confirm its dynamical and elastic stabilities, reveal its semiconducting nature with an indirect band gap of 0.90 eV for unstressed sample, and suggest a giant strain tuning effect which endows versatile electronic properties ranging from metallic to semiconducting. Furthermore, we observe multiple von Hove singularities near the Fermi energy. These salient properties may imply potential nanoelectronic applications. These findings help understand structure-property relationship for two-dimensional carbon allotropes, and help search new carbon polymorphs.

Stabilized Interfacial Ferromagnetism and Enhanced Magnetoelectric Properties of Ultrathin FeRh Films Capped with Heavy Transition Metal Ta

Thin FeRh film was extensively studied recently, and an emergent substrate- and capping-dependent interfacial ferromagnetism (FM) was widely observed in experiments. However, the voltage modulation of this interfacial ferromagnetism is barely studied, which would have profound applications in antiferromagnetic (AFM) FeRh-based magnetoelectric-random access memory (MeRAM). Using ab initio techniques, we comparatively study the interfacial ferromagnetic properties and magnetoelectric responses of ultrathin FeRh films capped by heavy transition metal Ta. We find that Ta capping reverses the phase stability of ultrathin FeRh film below 1.5 nm and gigantically stabilizes the ferromagnetic phase and interfacial ferromagnetism. Besides, small magnetic moment of 2.2 $μ_B$ for neighboring Fe atoms, regardless of magnetic configurations and film thickness, is induced by Ta capping. Compared with FeRh/MgO bilayers, magnetic anisotropies (in-plane for AFM, perpendicular for FM and interfacial-FM reconstructed trilayers) and magnetoelectric responses of these trilayers are enhanced. Furthermore, the VCMA behavior in FM phase is changed from $\vee$-shaped to linear. These findings demonstrate the manipulation of magnetic ordering of FeRh films with heavy metal capping and electric field and can promote the application of FeRh alloy in magnetic memory and antiferromagnetic spintronics.
