Nematic fluctuations in the non-superconducting iron pnictide BaFe$_{1.9-x}$Ni$_{0.1}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$

The main driven force of the electronic nematic phase in iron-based superconductors is still under debate. Here, we report a comprehensive study on the nematic fluctuations in a non-superconducting iron pnictide system BaFe$_{1.9-x}$Ni$_{0.1}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$ by electronic transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. Previous neutron diffraction and transport measurements suggested that the collinear antiferromagnetism persists to $x=0.8$, with similar Néel temperature $T_N$ and structural transition temperature $T_s$ around 32 K, but the charge carriers change from electron type to hole type around $x=$ 0.5. In this study, we have found that the in-plane resistivity anisotropy also highly depends on the Cr dopings and the type of charge carriers. While ARPES measurements suggest possibly weak orbital anisotropy onset near $T_s$ for both $x=0.05$ and $x=0.5$ compounds, INS experiments reveal clearly different onset temperatures of low-energy spin excitation anisotropy, which is likely related to the energy scale of spin nematicity. These results suggest that the interplay between the local spins on Fe atoms and the itinerant electrons on Fermi surfaces is crucial to the nematic fluctuations of iron pnictides, where the orbital degree of freedom may behave differently from the spin degree of freedom, and the transport properties are intimately related to the spin dynamics.

Spin Excitations and Spin Wave Gap in the Ferromagnetic Weyl Semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

We report a comprehensive neutron scattering study on the spin excitations in the magnetic Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ with quasi-two-dimensional structure. Both in-plane and out-of-plane dispersions of the spin waves are revealed in the ferromagnetic state, similarly dispersive but damped spin excitations persist into the paramagnetic state. The effective exchange interactions have been estimated by a semi-classical Heisenberg model to consistently reproduce the experimental $T_C$ and spin stiffness. However, a full spin wave gap below $E_g=2.3$ meV is observed at $T=4$ K, much larger than the estimated magnetic anisotropy energy ($\sim0.6$ meV), while its temperature dependence indicates a significant contribution from the Weyl fermions. These results suggest that Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ is a three-dimensional correlated system with large spin stiffness, and the low-energy spin dynamics could interplay with the topological electron states.

Multiplexing Capabilities of Cold-Neutron Triple-Axis Spectrometer SIKA

SIKA, a high-flux cold-neutron triple-axis spectrometer at the OPAL reactor at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization, is equipped with a 13-blade analyser and position-sensitive detector. This multiplexing design endows SIKA high flexibility to run in both traditional triple-axis and multiplexing analyser modes. In this study, two different multiplexing modes on SIKA are simulated using Monte-Carlo ray-tracing methods. The simulation results demonstrate SIKA capabilities to work in these operational modes, especially, the multi-Q const-Ef mode. This capability was demonstrated by measuring the phonon dispersion of a Pb single-crystal sample with the multi-Q const-Ef mode on SIKA. Compared to the traditional and multi-analyser triple-axis spectrometers, multiplexing modes on SIKA combine the advantages of the high data-acquisition efficiency and flexibility to focus on local areas of interest in the (Q, w) space.

Simultaneous Occurrence of Multiferroism and the Short-Range Magnetic Order in DyFeO3

We report a combined neutron scattering and magnetization study on the multiferroic DyFeO3 which shows a very strong magnetoelectric effect. Applying magnetic field along the c-axis, the weak ferromagnetic order of the Fe ions is quickly recovered from a spin reorientation transition, and the long-range antiferromagnetic order of Dy becomes a short-range one. We found that the short-range order concurs with the multiferroic phase and is responsible for its sizable hysteresis. Our H-T phase diagram suggests that the strong magnetoelectric effect in DyFeO3 has to be understood with not only the weak ferromagnetism of Fe but also the short-range antiferromagnetic order of Dy.

Soft Phonon Modes and Diffuse Scattering in Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 Relaxor Ferroelectrics

Single crystals of a ternary relaxor ferroelectric system, 0.29Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-0.45Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.26PbTiO3, have been studied using triple-axis based elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. Elastic diffuse scattering confirms the presence of polar nano-regions (PNRs) in this system. The PNRs emerge at the Burns temperature, TB = 630 K and then grow continuously in population and correlation size as the crystal cools down to 100 K. At 300 K, characteristic 'butterfly' and ellipsoid shaped diffuse scattering patterns are observed on the HK0 reciprocal space plane. Electrical poling along the [110] direction produces a marked asymmetry in the diffuse scattering patterns, with the parallel-to-the-field components enhanced while the perpendicular-to-the-field components suppressed. Several low energy phonon branches along the [001] and [111] directions were studied. Most significantly, the PNR-acoustic phonon coupling is confirmed for the [110] transverse acoustic (TA) phonons polarized along the [1-10] real space direction and the [100] TA phonons. This coupling appears to be anisotropic and correlated with the distribution of PNRs, and also affected by the relative length scales of the PNRs and phonon wave vectors. The well-known 'waterfall' phenomenon is observed on the [001] and [110] transverse optical (TO) branches, near the zone center. The optical phonon measurements also reveal a lowest-energy, zone center soft TO mode, whose squared phonon energy increase linearly with decreasing temperature below the TB.

Doping evolution of antiferromagnetism and transport properties in the non-superconducting BaFe2-2xNixCrxAs2

We report elastic neutron scattering and transport measurements on the Ni and Cr equivalently doped iron pnictide BaFe$_{2-2x}$Ni$_{x}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$. Compared with the electron-doped BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$, the long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) order in BaFe$_{2-2x}$Ni$_{x}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$ is gradually suppressed with vanishing ordered moment and Néel temperature near $x= 0.20$ without the appearance of superconductivity. A detailed analysis on the transport properties of BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As and BaFe$_{2-2x}$Ni$_{x}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$ suggests that the non-Fermi-liquid behavior associated with the linear resistivity as a function of temperature may not correspond to the disappearance of the static AF order. From the temperature dependence of the resistivity in overdoped compounds without static AF order, we find that the transport properties are actually affected by Cr impurity scattering, which may induce a metal-to-insulator crossover in highly doped BaFe$_{1.7-y}$Ni$_{0.3}$Cr$_{y}$As$_{2}$.

A spin ladder compound doubles its superconducting TC under a gentle uniaxial pressure

Discovery of new high TC superconductors, with TC > 23 K, continues to be challenging. We have doubled the existing TC of single crystal Sr3Ca11Cu24O41, a spin ladder cuprate, from 12K to 24K, using a gentle uniaxial pressure ~ 0.06 GPa. In contrast, earlier works used a nearly 100 times larger hydrostatic pressure 5 GPa, only to reach a maximum TC ~ 12K. Our work exposes large and nearly equal, but opposing contributions to changes in TC, arising from compressions along and perpendicular to ladder planes, in hydrostatic pressure experiments. In our resistivity measurements, uniaxial pressure applied along ladder planes increase TC, while that perpendicular to ladder planes decrease TC. Our findings i) offers a new hope for further increase in TC in spin ladder compounds and ii) calls for a large shift in phase boundaries of the currently accepted pressure-temperature phase diagram.

Electron doping evolution of the magnetic excitations in BaFe2-xNixAs2

We use inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopy to study the magnetic excitations spectra throughout the Brioullion zone in electron-doped iron pnictide superconductors BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_{x}$As$_{2}$ with $x=0.096,0.15,0.18$. While the $x=0.096$ sample is near optimal superconductivity with $T_c=20$ K and has coexisting static incommensurate magnetic order, the $x=0.15,0.18$ samples are electron-overdoped with reduced $T_c$ of 14 K and 8 K, respectively, and have no static antiferromagnetic (AF) order. In previous INS work on undoped ($x=0$) and electron optimally doped ($x=0.1$) samples, the effect of electron-doping was found to modify spin waves in the parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ below $\sim$100 meV and induce a neutron spin resonance at the commensurate AF ordering wave vector that couples with superconductivity. While the new data collected on the $x=0.096$ sample confirms the overall features of the earlier work, our careful temperature dependent study of the resonance reveals that the resonance suddenly changes its $Q$-width below $T_c$ similar to that of the optimally hole-doped iron pnictides Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. In addition, we establish the dispersion of the resonance and find it to change from commensurate to transversely incommensurate with increasing energy. Upon further electron-doping to overdoped iron pnictides with $x=0.15$ and 0.18, the resonance becomes weaker and transversely incommensurate at all energies, while spin excitations above $\sim$100 meV are still not much affected. Our absolute spin excitation intensity measurements throughout the Brillouin zone for $x=0.096,0.15,0.18$ confirm the notion that the low-energy spin excitation coupling with itinerant electron is important for superconductivity in these materials, even though the high-energy spin excitations are weakly doping dependent.

Spin gap evolution upon Ca doping in the spin ladder series $Sr_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41}$ by inelastic neutron scattering

The spin gap evolution upon Ca doping in Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 was systematically investigated using inelastic neutron scattering. We discover that the singlet-triplet spin gap excitation survives in this series with x up to 13, indicating the singlet dimer ground state in these compounds. This observation corrects the previous speculation that the spin gap collapses at x~13 by the NMR technique. The strong intensity modulation along QH in x=0 gradually evolves into a Q-independent feature in x>11. This could be attributed to the localized Cu moment magnetism developing into an itinerant magnetism with increasing x. It is a surprise that the spin gap persists in the normal state of this spin ladder system with metallic behaviour, which evidences the possibility of magnetically-mediated carrier pairing mechanism in a two-leg spin ladder lattice.

Structural Evolution of One-dimensional Spin Ladder Compounds Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 with Ca doping and Related Hole Redistribution Evidence

Incommensurate crystal structures of spin ladder series Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 (x=3, 7, 11, 12.2) were characterized by powder neutron scattering method and refined using the superspace group Xmmm(00γ)ss0 (equivalent to superspace group Fmmm(0,0,1+γ)ss0); X stands for non-standard centering (0,0,0,0), (0,1/2,1/2,1/2), (1/2,1/2,0,0), (1/2,0,1/2,1/2)) with a modulated structure model. The Ca doping effects on the lattice parameters, atomic displacement, Cu-O distances, Cu-O bond angles and Cu bond valence sum were characterized. The refined results show that the CuO4 planar units in both chain and ladder sublattices become closer to square shape with an increase of Ca doping. The Cu bond valence sum calculation provided new evidence for the charge transfer from the chains to ladders (approximately 0.16 holes per Cu from x=0 to 12.2). The charge transfer was attributed to two different mechanisms: (a) the Cu-O bond distance shrinkage on the ladder; (b) increase of the interaction between two sublattices, resulting in Cu-O bonding between the chains and ladders. The low temperature structural refinement resulted in the similar conclusion, with a slight charge backflow to the chains.
