KeV scale new fermion from a hidden sector

We studied a simple model of hidden sector consists of a Dirac fermion $χ$ and a spontaneously broken $U(1)_s$ symmetry. The dark sector is connected to the Standard Model(SM) via three righthanded SM singlet neutrinos, $N_R$'s, and the kinetic mixing between $U(1)_s$ and $U(1)_Y$. A mixing between the scalar $ϕ$ that breaks $U(1)_s$ and the SM Higgs boson, $H$, is implemented via the term $ϕ^\dagger ϕH^\dagger H$ and this provides a third connection to the SM. Integrating out the $N_R$ at a high scale not only gives the active neutrinos, $ν$, masses but generates effective Dirac type of couplings between $ν$ and $χ$. This changes the usual Type-I seesaw results for active neutrino masses and makes $χ$ behave like a sterile neutrino even though its origin is in the hidden sector. $χ$ is also split into a pair of Majorana fermions. The amount of splitting depends on the parameters. If the lighter of the pair has a mass around keV, its lifetime is longer than the age of the universe and it can be a warm dark matter candidate. Signatures of $χ$ in high precision Kurie plots of nuclei $β$ decays and low energy neutrino nuclei coherent scatterings are discussed. The model also induces new invisible $Z$ decay modes that can be searched for in future Z factories.

Renormalization Group Study of the Minimal Majoronic Dark Radiation and Dark Matter Model

We study the 1-loop renormalization group equation running in the simplest singlet Majoron model constructed by us earlier to accommodate the dark radiation and dark matter content in the universe. A comprehensive numerical study was performed to explore the whole model parameter space. A smaller effective number of neutrinos $\triangle N_{eff}\sim 0.05$, or a Majoron decoupling temperature higher than the charm quark mass, is preferred. We found that a heavy scalar dark matter, $ρ$, of mass $1.5-4$ TeV is required by the stability of the scalar potential and an operational type-I see-saw mechanism for neutrino masses. A neutral scalar, $S$, of mass in the $10-100$ GeV range and its mixing with the standard model Higgs as large as $0.1$ is also predicted. The dominant decay modes are $S$ into $b\bar{b}$ and/or $ωω$. A sensitive search will come from rare $Z$ decays via the chain $Z\rightarrow S+ f\bar{f}$, where $f$ is a Standard Model fermion, followed by $S$ into a pair of Majoron and/or b-quarks. The interesting consequences of dark matter bound state due to the sizable $Sρρ$-coupling are discussed as well. In particular, shower-like events with an apparent neutrino energy at $M_ρ$ could contribute to the observed effective neutrino flux in underground neutrino detectors such as IceCube.

Search for Heavy Right-Handed Neutrinos at the LHC and Beyond in the Same-Sign Same-Flavor Leptons Final State

In this study we explore the LHC's Run II potential to the discovery of heavy Majorana neutrinos, with luminosities between $30$ and $3000$ fb$^{-1}$ in the $l^{\pm}l^{\pm}j~j$ final state. Given that there exist many models for neutrino mass generation, even within the Type I seesaw framework, we use a simplified model approach and study two simple extensions to the Standard Model, one with a single heavy Majorana neutrino, singlet under the Standard Model gauge group, and a limiting case of the left-right symmetric model. We then extend the analysis to a future hadron collider running at $100$ TeV center of mass energies. This extrapolation in energy allows us to study the relative importance of the resonant production versus gauge boson fusion processes in the study of Majorana neutrinos at hadron colliders. We analyze and propose different search strategies designed to maximize the discovery potential in either the resonant production or the gauge boson fusion modes.

A Minimal Model of Majoronic Dark Radiation and Dark Matter

We extend the singlet Majoron model of dark radiation by adding another singlet scalar of unit lepton charge. The spontaneous breaking of global $U(1)_L$ connects dark radiation with neutrino mass generation via the type-I seesaw mechanism. The model naturally has a stable scalar dark matter field. It also predicts the existence of a light scalar of mass less than 1 GeV that mixes with the Standard Model Higgs boson. We perform a numerical analysis of the parameters of the model by imposing constraints from giving correct relic abundance and satisfying bounds from direct dark matter detection, rare decays of B-meson, and invisible width of the Higgs boson. The viability of the model in accommodating the gamma rays from the Galactic center is discussed as well. The model gives rise to new rare Higgs boson decays such as four-muon final states with displaced vertices. Another unique signal is two muons and missing energy recoil against the muon pair. Our result also shows that such a bridge between dark radiation and the seesaw mechanism will put the seesaw scale in the range of 1-100 TeV.

Probing Radiative Neutrino Mass Generation through Monotop Production

We present a generalization of a model where the right-handed up-type quarks serve as messengers for neutrino mass generation and as a portal for dark matter. Within this framework the Standard Model is extended with a single Majorana neutrino, a coloured electroweak-singlet scalar and a coloured electroweak-triplet scalar. We calculate the relic abundance of dark matter and show that we can match the latest experimental results. Furthermore, the implications from the scattering between nuclei and the dark matter candidate are studied and we implement the latest experimental constraints arising from flavour changing interactions, Higgs production and decay and LHC collider searches for a single jet and jets plus missing energy. In addition, we implement constraints arising from scalar top quark pair-production. We also study the production of a single top in association with missing energy and calculate the sensitivity of the LHC to the top quark semileptonic decay mode with the current $20$ fb$^{-1}$ data set at a centre of mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. Furthermore, we carry out the analysis to centre of mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV with $30$ and $300$ fb$^{-1}$ of data.

Some consequences of the Majoron being the dark radiation

We discuss some phenomenological consequences in a scenario where a singlet Majoron plays the role of dark radiation. We study the interrelations between neutrino mass generation and the scalar potential arising from this identification. We find the extra scalar has to be light with a mass at or below the GeV level. The mixing of this scalar with the Standard Model Higgs impacts low energy phenomena such as the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift and muon anomalous magnetic moment. Demanding that the light scalar solves the puzzle in the muon magnetic moment requires the scalar to be lighter still with mass at or below the 10 MeV level. The cross-sections for the production of heavy neutrinos at LHC14 are also given.

Top Quark as a Dark Portal and Neutrino Mass Generation

We present a new model for radiatively generating Majorana active neutrino masses while incorporating a viable dark matter candidate. This is possible by extending the Standard Model with a single Majorana neutrino endowed with a dark parity, a colour electroweak singlet scalar, as well as a colour electroweak triplet scalar. Within this framework, the $up$-type quarks play a special role, serving as a portal for dark matter, and a messenger for neutrino mass generation. We consider three benchmark scenarios where the abundance of dark matter can match the latest experimental results, while generating neutrino masses in the milli-electronvolt range. We show how constraints from lepton flavour violation, in particular the branching fraction of $μ\to eγ$, can place lower bounds on the coupling between our dark matter candidate and top quarks. Furthermore, we show that this coupling can also be constrained using collider data from the Tevatron and the LHC.

Tracking Down the Top Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry with Monotops

We revisit the possibility that the top quark forward-backward asymmetry arises from the on-shell production and decay of scalar top partners to top-antitop pairs with missing transverse energy. Although the asymmetry is produced by t-channel exchange of a light mediator, the model remains unconstrained by low energy atomic parity violation tests. An interesting connection to the active neutrino sector through a Type-I seesaw operator helps to evade stringent monojet constraints and opens up a richer collider phenomenology. After performing a global fit to top data from both the Tevatron and the LHC, we obtain a viable region of parameter space consistent with all phenomenological and collider constraints. We also discuss the discovery potential of a predicted monotop signal and related lepton charge asymmetry at the LHC.

Constraints on New Scalars from the LHC 125 GeV Higgs Signal

We study the implications the recent results from the LHC Higgs searches have on scalar new physics. We study the impact on both the Higgs production and decay from scalars with and without colour, and in cases where decoupling do and do not happen. We investigate possible constraints on scalar parameters from the production rate in the diphoton channel, and also the two vector boson channels. Measurements from both channels can help disentangle new physics due to colour from that due to charge, and thus reveal the nature of the new scalar states.

Top Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry and Anomalous Right-Handed Charge Currents

Recent measurements of the top quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron could hint at new physics with an unexpected flavor structure. The significance of such an abnormal flavor structure in alleviating the tension between the various determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ via right-handed charge currents is studied. In particular, we elaborate on how the associated new flavor changing couplings naturally allow for the generation of anomalous loop-induced right-handed charge currents which can simultaneously remove the tension in the determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ and escape the tight indirect bounds from $B \ra X_s γ$.

An Unusual Two Higgs Doublet Model from Warped Space

We study a simple two Higgs doublet model (2HDM) in the Randall-Sundrum scenario, with an IR brane localized Higgs field and a second doublet arising from a $t\bar{t}$ condensate due to strong Kaluza-Klein gluon effects. The effective 2HDM predicts that the ratio of the brane to condensate vacuum expectation values $\tan β\sim 3$. It also predicts a standard model like Higgs boson of mass ${\mathcal{O}}(100)$ GeV and a heavier scalar at the scale of the lowest KK gluon mass, which we take to be $M_{KK} \gtrsim 1.5$ TeV. The pseudoscalar and the charged scalars are degenerate in mass at tree-level and are ${\mathcal{O}}(M_{KK})$. There are no tree-level flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) for the down-type quarks and the standard model results hold there. In contrast, FCNC decays of the t-quark larger than in the SM are expected.

Multi-State Dark Matter from Spherical Extra Dimensions

We demonstrate a new model which uses an ADD type braneworld scenario to produce a multi-state theory of dark matter. Compactification of the extra dimensions onto a sphere leads to the association of a single complex scalar in the bulk with multiple Kaluza-Klein towers in an effective four-dimensional theory. A mutually interacting multi-state theory of dark matter arises naturally within which the dark matter states are identified with the lightest Kaluza-Klein particles of fixed magnetic quantum number. These states are protected from decay by a combination of a global U(1) symmetry and the continuous rotational symmetry about the polar axis of the spherical geometry. We briefly discuss the relic abundance calculation and investigate the spin-independent elastic scattering off nucleons of the lightest and next-to-lightest dark matter states.

Neutron-Antineutron Oscillations in a Warped Extra Dimension

We investigate neutron-antineutron oscillations in the Randall-Sundrum warped extra dimensional scenario. The four dimensional effective strengths of the relevant operators that induce the oscillations are calculated up to an arbitrary coupling along with their corresponding enhancements due to QCD 1-loop running effects. We find that the $ΔB = 2$ operators can be geometrically suppressed without fine tuning to within current experimental limits with a warped down four dimensional mass scale which can be as low as a fraction of a TeV.

Discrete Dirac Neutrino in Warped Extra Dimensions

We implement Dirac neutrinos in the minimal custodial Randall-Sundrum setting via the Krauss-Wilczek mechanism. We demonstrate by giving explicit lepton mass matrices that with neutrinos in the normal hierarchy, lepton mass and mixing patterns can be naturally reproduced at the scale set by the constraints from electroweak precision measurements, and at the same time without violating bounds set by lepton flavour violations. Our scenario generically predicts a nonzero neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$, as well as the existence of sub-TeV right-handed Kaluza-Klein neutrinos, which partner the right-handed Standard Model charged leptons. These relatively light KK neutrinos may be searched for at the LHC.

A Very Narrow Shadow Extra Z-boson at Colliders

We consider the phenomenological consequences of a hidden Higgs sector extending the Standard Model (SM), in which the ``shadow Higgs'' are uncharged under the SM gauge groups. We consider a simple U(1) model with one Higgs singlet. One mechanism which sheds light on the shadow sector is the mixing between the neutral gauge boson of the SM and the additional U(1) gauge group. The mixing happens through the usual mass-mixing and also kinetic-mixing, and is the only way the ``shadow $Z$'' couples to the SM. We study in detail modifications to the electroweak precision tests (EWPTs) that the presence of such a shadow sector would bring, which in turn provide constraints on the kinetic-mixing parameter, $s_ε$, left free in our model. The shadow $Z$ production rate at the LHC and ILC depends on $s_ε$. We find that observable event rate at both facilities is possible for a reasonable range of $s_ε$ allowed by EWPTs.

Lepton Flavor Violation in Extra Dimension Models

Models involving large extra spatial dimension(s) have interesting predictions on lepton flavor violating processes. We consider some 5D models which are related to neutrino mass generation or address the fermion masses hierarchy problem. We study the signatures in low energy experiments that can discriminate the different models. The focus is on muon-electron conversion in nuclei, $μ\ra e γ$ and $μ\ra 3e$ processes and their $τ$ counterparts. Their links with the active neutrino mass matrix are investigated. We show that in the models we discussed the branching ratio of $μ\ra e γ$ like rare process is much smaller than the ones of $μ\ra 3e$ like processes. This is in sharp contrast to most of the traditional wisdom based on four dimensional gauge models. Moreover, some rare tau decays are more promising than the rare muon decays.

Neutrino Mass Models in Extra Dimensions

Neutrinos play a crucial role in many areas of physics from very short distances to astrophysics and cosmology. It is a long held believe that they are good probes of physics at the GUT scale. Recent developments have made it clear that they can also be of fundamental importance for the physics of extra dimensions if these exist. Here we pedagogically review the construction of neutrino mass models in extra dimensions within the brane world scenarios. These models are usually nontrivial generalizations of their four dimensional counterparts. We describe the theoretical tools that have been forged and the new perpectives gained in this rapidly developing area. In particular we discuss the issues involve in building models without the use of right-handed singlets. It is very difficult to directly test the origin of neutrino masses in different models be it in four or more dimensions. We point out that different models give very different indirect signatures in the TeV region and in precision measurements.

Phenomenology of a 5D Orbifold $SU(3)_W$ Unification model

We study the phenomenology of a 5D $SU(3)_W$ model on a $S_1/(Z_2\times Z'_2)$ orbifold in which the minimal scalar sector plays an essential role of radiatively generating neutrino Majorana masses without the benefits of right-handed singlets. We carefully examine how do the exotic scalars affect the renormalization group (RG) equations for the gauge couplings and the 5D $SU(3)_W$ unification. We found that the compactification scale of extra dimension is in the range of $1/R\sim 1.5-5$ TeV. The possibility of the existence of relatively low mass Kaluza-Klein excitations makes the phenomenology of near term interest. Some possible bilepton signatures can be searched for in future colliders and in neutrino scattering experiments with intense neutrino beams. The low energy constraints from muon physics and lepton number violating decay process induced by bilepton are also discussed. These constraints can provide new information on the structure of Yukawa couplings which might be useful for future model building.

CP violation in 5D Split Fermions Scenario

We give a new configuration of split fermion positions in one extra dimension with two different Yukawa coupling strengths for up-type, $h_u$, and down-type, $h_d$, quarks at $\frac{h_u}{h_d}=36.0$. The new configurations can give enough CP violating (CPV) phase for accommodating all currently observed CPV processes. Therefore, a 5D standard model with split fermions is viable. In addition to the standard CKM phase, new CPV sources involving Kaluza-Klein(KK) gauge bosons coupling which arise from the fact that unitary rotation which transforms weak eigenstates into their mass eigenstates only holds for the zero modes which are the SM fields and not for the KK excitations. We have examined the physics of kaon, neutron, and $B/D$ mesons and found the most stringent bound on the size $R$ of the extra dimension comes from $|ε_K|$. Moreover, it depends sensitively on the width, $σ$, of the Gaussian wavefunction in the extra dimension used to describe of the fermions. When $σ/R \ll 1$, the constraint will be lifted due to GIM suppression on the flavor changing neutral current(FCNC) and CPV couplings.

Polarization Measurements and T-Violation in Exclusive Semileptonic B Decays

We provide a general analysis of time reversal invariance violation in the exclusive semileptonic B decays B to D l nu and B to D* l nu. Measurements of the lepton and D* polarizations can be used to search for and identify non-standard model sources of T violation. Upper limits are placed on the T-odd polarization observables in both the supersymmetric R-parity conserving and R-parity breaking theories, as well as in some non-supersymmetric extensions of the standard model, including multi-Higgs-doublet models, leptoquark models, and left-right symmetric models. It is noted that many of these models allow for large T-violating polarization effects which could be within the reach of the planned B factories.

Testing Time Reversal Invariance in Exclusive Semileptonic B Meson Decays

We demonstrate that polarization measurements in exclusive semileptonic B decays are powerful tools for unraveling non-standard model sources of T-violation. Measurements of the transverse polarization of the tau lepton in the B to D tau nu and B to D* tau nu decays probe separately effective scalar and pseudoscalar CP-violating four-Fermi interactions, whereas the D* polarization in the B to D* l nu (l=e,mu) decay is sensitive to an effective right-handed quark current interaction. Two T-odd polarization structures exist involving the D* polarization and they can be isolated and studied separately. An estimate of these T-odd effects is also given in the context of supersymmetric theories.

Supersymmetric Time Reversal Violation in Semileptonic Decays of Charged Mesons

We provide a general analysis of time reversal violation arising from misalignment between quark and squark mass eigenstates. In particular, we focus on the possibility of large enhancement effects due to the top quark mass. For semileptonic decays of the charged mesons, $K^+ \rightarrow π^0 μ^+ ν_μ$, $D^+ \rightarrow \overline{K}^0 μ^+ ν_μ$, and $B^+ \rightarrow \overline{D}^0 τ^+ ν_τ$, the transverse polarization of the lepton $P^{\bot}_l$ is a $T$-odd observable that is of great experimental interest. It is noted that under favorable choice of parameters, $P^{\bot}_μ$ in $K^+_{\mu3}$ decay can be detectable at the ongoing KEK experiment and it holds a promising prospect for discovery at the proposed BNL experiment. Furthermore, $P^{\bot}_τ$ in $B^{\pm}$ decay could well be within the reach of $B$ factories, but $P^{\bot}_μ$ in $D^{\pm}$ decay is not large enough for detection at the proposed $τ$-charm factory.

T-Violation in $K^+ \to μ^+ νγ$ Decay And Supersymmetry

Measurement of the transverse muon polarization $P^{\bot}_μ$ in the $K^+ \rightarrow μ^+νγ$ decay will be attempted for the first time at the ongoing KEK E246 experiment and also at a proposed BNL experiment. We provide a general analysis of how $P^{\bot}_μ$ is sensitive to the physical $CP$-violating phases in new physics induced four-Fermi interactions, and then we calculate the dominant contributions to $P^{\bot}_μ$ from squark family mixings in generic supersymmetric models. Estimates of the upper bounds on $P^{\bot}_μ$ are also given. It is found that a supersymmetry-induced right-handed quark current from $W$ boson exchange gives an upper limit on $P^{\bot}_μ$ as large as a few per cent, whereas with charged-Higgs-exchange induced pseudoscalar interaction, $P^{\bot}_μ$ is no larger than a few tenths of a per cent. Possible correlations between the muon polarization measurements in $K^+ \rightarrow μ^+νγ$ and $K^+ \rightarrow π^0μ^+ν$ decays are discussed, and distinctive patterns of this correlation from squark family-mixings and from the three-Higgs-doublet model are noted.
